For those that might not like what they are doing. These chickens will have 100 times more of a happy house than the McNuggets you all eat. Just sayin... and I am a animal lover!
The people that gripe about what the Crocker’s raise for food, don’t seem to have a problem enjoying their bacon, eggs, sausage and steaks etc!

These chickens will die as they are fast growing if not processed around 8 weeks. They don’t lay eggs. They are breed as meat chickens.

Important to feed them Starter/grower food and don't let the wind blow on them. Keep them dry. You'll enjoy watching them, chickens are fun to watch!
The meat birds need heat until they are feathered out, we are under a frost advisory in Oklahoma and the trees are tropical lime and orange, I think you mentioned and need to come in for the winter, They won’t withstand a freeze. Good luck 🍀 your doing a fantastic job at the ranch. This year is unseasonably cold. You probably have a pack rat they get huge! Always exciting in the country. Ha

They must have heat until they have all their feathers!! They do not have a Mom to keep them warm. Keep food and water in front of them all the time. They will grow fast!! So cute.
Some homesteaders wrap their chicken tractors twice with Chicken wire. Also, they move their chickens forward in a straight line where they want to plant garden in the future because they fertilize the soil as they go. Great farming technique, practiced by Justin Rhodes & many others in North Carolina. Good Luck. 😊
Jason those chicks need a heat lamp. Need to be at 90degrees first week of life reducing heat by 5 degrees every week after.
They'll still need a heat source for a while. Mom sits on them at night to keep them warm. It's awesome that you're raising your own food. Going to love watching them grow. Your place is turning into a farm quickly. Can't wait until you are able to get some large animals on the ranch. God Bless you and your family.

Nope once they come out from under her they are good to go she only needs to cover them once they hatch for about 24 hours then they are good
@@jeremylange8498You are absolutely wrong. When the sun goes down or in cool windy conditions, they do need a heat source. They would be under their mother during these instances, and until they're fully feather out, they would be kept warm by the Hen when needed.
You are most definitely on your way to self sufficiency! I think you have made phenomenal progress in 3.5 months.
Half way from the bottom up ( and all around ) it would be nice to see hardware cloth over the chicken wire the reason for this is to stop predators from reaching in and killing or injuring the meat birds
Home grown chickens are so tasty, so much better than store bought.
I'm doing the same thing guys. I have 37 chicks I have been raising now for 8 weeks. Mine are for eggs right now and are pretty much all feathered out. I am just so amazed at how you guys (Danielle you are included and such an important part of you guys) are so knowledgeable at everything you need to do. There is so much to keep up with and I love it. Keep up the great work and I really love you guys.

I’m raising my first meat birds right now. I’ve had them for a week. It’s too cold in Massachusetts for them to be outside yet but I’m definitely going to show this quick build to my husband. Pretty sure we have enough supplies around to make this.

I would like to suggest that you put something heavy on the lid that opens so that is doesn't get blown open by wind and predators get in although that won't stop snakes. Also if you do down the line use it for rabbits, you will have to put chicken wire on the bottom so they don't burrow their way out. Cornish Cross will outgrow the tractor but by that time, they can just free range the same as the other chickens because they grow huge. If all 20 survive you will need a freezer, that is enough chicken to last possibly a year between the 3 of you.
That was a great Build for you all! We always put a light on ours at night until they feathered out here in Ga.

You can use either a small mouth mason jar or a mayonnaise jar to put in the waterer to supply more water. You might want to think about a latch of some kind on the top, just to keep it secure if the wind blows or a predator does get in can't get into the cage. great build.

Raising your own meat chickens are the best. We did it twice. We are planning again. They took about 12 weeks at 10 pounds dressed. They got so big they had a hard time walking especially the roosters. The hens weights around 8 pounds the smallest was 5lbs 9oz. You all will love it when they are ready. Thank you for sharing. My only comment would be as we looked at chicken tractors I liked the ones with wheels. It would make it easier to move it. Nice job!! Living my life!

The chicken tracker is nice, i hope the all the chicks survive and that there be no freezing nights, but maybe consider a heat lamp and protection from the wind and rain ⛈ , but bottom line you guys do what ever you feel is best for your chicks , 😊👍💕💕💕

I have such great memories as a child on our farm and my grandma’s farm. It’s a great life and so great to see y’all grabbing hold with such gusto and gettin’ ‘er done!👍☺️ It looks like one of the chicks had gotten pecked on it’s back. They learn pretty young that it’s survival of the fittest.🥴
I was raised in the country{north Louisiana} as a kid and we raised chickens also. We called them chicks or "bitties". Don't know why. Loved hearing them "peep". Our cages were raised off the ground and snakes would crawl up and eat them. Hopefully you won't have that problem.
That's what happened to ours, a fox came digging and racoons got 4 or 5 of them at a few mths. old. Hard to protect them.

Greetings from Ohio. I fear they’re too young to be out in the cold at night, nor should they get wet. Dutch had some chickens, older than these chicks where the wind and rain blew in and the chicks got wet and they died. I also fear that you’ll need a latch for the lid. A raccoon can easily open that. You did a good job on the build. You worked in your dress up clothes. Lol. PS. Don’t name the chickens if you’re going to process them. C come on Jason. You have videos out there in the airways when you lived with Jared telling us how wonderful homesteading is and how to be a homesteader.

Just a hint....I have always put a floor in the enclosed area. Just makes it easier to herd the chicks in when you move so you can move it a little faster. Just a thought.

That is what we do for our meat birds. Chicken tractor and move daily. 7-8 weeks and ready to process. Last yr we lost 3 the last week as they get too heavy and their heart can’t take it. This year week 7 we will process. Ours were Cornish Cross. Best of luck, it is an easy source of food.

They will need a heat lamp - they are usually under a hen at that age - please do not leave them to keep themselves warm. Maybe bring them in at night until they get their grown feathers.
That's exactly what I was thinking! Poor birds will freeze to death.
I know y'all said that you don't have a predator problem, but for those of you that do, you should use hardware mesh that have smaller openings (and often cheaper) and protect from more predators. You can also stribp 2x2s from 2x4 with a saw to save money.

Knowing where your meat comes from and how much work it takes to produce it will make you really appreciate that smoked chicken. I bet it will also taste really good because they'll be eating fresh grass and bugs.

You might bring them in tonight because there is a freeze warning...and they do not have their momma to sit on them and keep them warm. That’s why people who buy baby chicks have heat lamps
Main natural thing that will kill them is if it rains and they get wet. Wet and chilled will kill them in minutes sometimes. Seen some farmers get them dried off with hair dryer but most did not survive. Good luck
Love you guys to death... not sure what you have against homesteaders but by definition you are one.... only a ranch or farm if you raise product to sell for a profit. Keep up what you are doing.... we love it.... no matter what you want to call it!
I don't think they have anything against them, it just gets tiresome when they see the same comments over and over to watch so and so homestead,(not naming a Homestead, just using that as a reference), it has been a constant 0ccurance even though I know Jared has said it many times that he isn't interested in watching a lot of homesteading channels.

Very concerned about those chicks not having a heat source. Unfeathered chicks require temps of 80 - 95 degrees consistently & I don't think current temps in Oklahoma are that high.

I don't know your weather, but you still get chilly nights, I've raised chickens for 25 years now, needless to say I learned by mistake, least put them in a box covered with a blanket

You could leave the rabbits when they get a little older on one spot for a few days and the afterwards plant in it, like tomatoes or other things you might have on a burger 😊

And of course, Jared helping too. Love you all! Sorry I'm gonna miss the Shootang Fest, but I'm having my Total (Reverse) Shoulder Replacement surgery on this Thursday (21st). I'm recovering (still) from major abdominal surgery on 3/14 for ovarian cancer. Dr. removed a 6+ lb. tumor that was, thankfully, benign (lots of prayers before surgery. Hope to see you all again sometime. Come on over to northeast Alabama and I'll show you around!

Looks like a good chicken tractor. When I was younger we had a chicken coop where the chickens stayed at night then they were out and about during the day. But that was years ago. Good luck with your chicks. Take care and stay safe out there.
Awesome. We raised 100 purple chicks, my grandma called them bitties, every year and put them up 50 at a time, into the freezer. We were a family of 7 + grandma. Stinky work but I’ve never had a better bird to eat. After you pluck them, swinge the hairs off over an open flame. We had a small twig fire for this purpose. Then to the kitchen for gutting and cleaning gizzards. Watch out for the random rock or button in their gizzards. They love to eat weird little things. I’m very happy for you all. Ps, they like to snuggle together at night in a small space for warmth and comfort.
Good on you all, and that’s the best $25 you ever spent that’s what $2.50 per bird and you get a full freezer. It really is so different from the past years of the Crockers . For the better, good woman by your side, great choice in life partner.💖💖🇦🇺

On the little baby chicks - I know you have a lot of good optimism about raising them up without a heat lamp, however weather is supposed to again get crazy windy and chilly. Maybe have one as a backup for around the 22 - 23rd up there in OK. Wanna make sure you've got a crowded freezer!

I like the way you use things that you already have, recycle, upcycle ETC. That’s the way I like to do things too. I just get excited inside saving money.
I’m sure you probably have already realized this but they still need a heat lamp until they have more feathers. On a barn yard momma keeps them warm. And a raccoon can reach Thru chicken wire and pull your babies thru. Ask me how I know.😫😫

I believe I would either make or buy some hook locks or make a way to lock down the lid . You'd be surprised how easy something can get in there. A lot of the subscribers left a lot of good information about them and what needs to be done for them. Especially if it's still getting cold at night there. They will definitely need a much bigger feeder and water container. All these birds do is eat all the time. They'll be plenty big by 8-10 wks. Some can't even walk and get to the feeder by then.

Great chicken tractor, yep you need something to pull it with but great way to use up your scrap wood from other projects is cool no waste is what I like to see. Good to see your expanding on the animals even for consumption at least you know what they are fed on. X
Might consider a latch on the top to keep the OK. Winds from blowing the top off. Also keeps predators out.

I live this show, but My ADHD and OCD goes haywire with all the unfinished projects, and unorthodox methods. Lol Id have preferred to finish the gutters before moving to another project , but thats just me. Keep on rockin it! Looking good so far.

I hope you have better luck than I did when I didn't use a heat lamp and my chicks we feathered out. But when temps were about 65 degrees at night they passed. I wish yall the best of luck much love and hugs.
Might want to consider in the boxed end to put a inside wall with a small 6 x6 inch opening at bottom to give the chicks a bit of a shelter during a storm. Also think about how to anchor down the tractor when high winds come. It's spring so you will have to deal with these two factors. But y'all probably already thought about this contingency. 😉

Not trying to be an ahole or even a smartass, just say'in as someone who lives not too far from you for most of my 59 years. I won't bet you but I'll make you this promise that when it blows away, I won't say I told you so.

Usually you don't put out chicks till they are fully feathered,. Make sure to cover the coop at night or windy days with a tarp or blanket to keep the warmth up in the coop....good luck
Once you have fresh chicken all other will taste very different. Great build for them.
