My honest guess was between $60k-$80k
They will only buy up to 60% resale value. It’s not to the benefit of the customer to trade in or sell your vehicle to a dealership. Thinking you would get a retail offer is ridiculous. They are in the business of reselling cars, you know you’re not going to get what they would sell it for…. So I’m not understanding the shock here.

    • @zonehawk

I just did a search and found that vehicles lose about 20% annually of the amount they're purchased for. Considering the fact that Carmax is a place that doesn't work like a dealership or 'buy here pay here' type of place - yet kinda similar, the amount they say they'll pay you is going to be a 'little' less than what they would sell it for. It's more like consignment. I'd say $76k is kinda ok, but having to own the vehicle for at least one year prior to selling to Carmax is ridiculous.

  • @JeRKII

The $20k "Founder's Edition" is more like "Sucker of the year edition", paying more to Beta test a preproduction vehicle. The locking differential does not even work yet.

I mean it was supposed to be a 40k truck starting price when they first announced it, so it was never going to be a collectible

That is higher than I expected. CarMax has become one of the biggest ripoffs for customers. I bought multiple plug-in hybrids from CarMax 10 years ago, but their business has changed.

I initially thought it was going to be 80K, but then you went on about Dubai and i adjusted it up to 150K, but then you mentioned the 150K and looked so optimistic, i scaled it way up to 250K.
I should've stuck with my first guess, hah.
I am not too surprised, i think a wrapped one will always sell for less than a plain steel version, and at the moment they also have not yet proven their worth in reliability or safety etc., for a company like Carmax it's too early to officially offer great deals on them.

Interesting video. Welp, they can offer whatever they like. That said no one is going to sell it to them at this point for that price. If you bought it outright you would likely not be so desperate to sell this soon. And if you financed you would be upside down if you sold at such a huge lost. The only people selling this early are those motivated by a large profit, so the lowball offer will leave you waiting without a truck. It simple supply and demand.

I'm not surprised. I tried to sell them a car once and their offer was way below the Kelley Blue Book value. I then took it to another dealership and got way more! I will never buy or sell a car from Carmax! You are much better off selling it privately. I listed one of my EV cars on Saturday using Craigslist and got a buyer within 10 minutes of listing it! I had a bidding wars over it and got more than what I wanted. Always sell privately if you can. You don't have to go on rides with strangers. Just hold on to their drivers license while they go for a test drive on their own. You can also meet them in a crowded public place if you're worried about safety.

CarMax isn't going to resell it for anywhere close to what you think. They'll send it to a wholesale auction, not sell it on their lot for $150k+. Their offer def means they don't even feel like dealing with it.

This will be the standard for these junky trucks. I'm not hating but this should not ba a shock to the Tesla fan boys!! This was the reason King Elon forbids sale before the 1st year! Hilarious!!!!

It's probably a legit offer. I wouldn't pay the mark ups for a Cyber Truck right now. They are going to likely drop like a rock in a year. If you had to look at it that way then 76k is probably decent and close to MSRP or for lack of a better word what MSRP will be.
Tesla's goal is to ramp production and drop the price and still profit. You're actually over paying getting one now but I'll bet CarMax could sell it for a decent amount quick now. It just won't stay that way and if they are honest they won't charge a ton lol. CarMax has generally been pretty fair. Or at least most locations.

76k seems about right, not too good but business is business. Within a few years that should be this car value.
