My mom got her phone stolen quite literally at the exact same spot (Leicester Square) by the exact same tactic (putting a piece of paper over, pretending to ask for food). She was very upset, but after a bit of a hassle, she looked at the bright side and treated it as her chance to get a new phone.
We got different brains. He let them get away although he could have caught them. Messed up world, people say well done for letting criminals get away. In the good old days you'd get called a scum and everyone in the neighbourhood would know. Guess we have to settle for this soft world

Used to work at a local coffee shop. People would steal the tip jar a lot, so I decided to tie it to a string and attach the string to the counter. It worked. Watching people pull on it and realize it wasn’t coming with them was hilarious.
I once warned a woman whose wallet was visible in a bag. She was annoyed at me and said it never has been stolen. This was in a crowded department store and she had her hands full of shopping.

I left my wallet at a park one time and didn't realize until i checked my mailbox and my wallet was there with a note saying you left this in the park. I was so baffled someone went out of their way to drive to my house and drop my wallet off. Love Canada

Coming back to comment on this video to say, thank you so much for making this. I wasn't aware of this particular pickpocket technique until this video, but because of it I was able to save my friends phone from being stolen from inside a restaurant with that exact method. My mind immediately thought back to this video when I saw someone putting that paper on our table! You've truely saved my friend a LOT of distress Zac!

Fun fact about the bongo players. In Madrid we had a group of ethnic drummers that would play close to our huge park and were lots of fun. They were energetic and people loved to dance and give them money. They must have been there for over 5 years when out of no where they were gone, I missed them and asked around. Come to find out they were the lookouts for the drug sellers that worked that corner of the park. With their music they communicated when police were around and potential customers or danger😅😅😅

More people would pay attention to the sign and avoid the thieves if your sign called them a "pickpocket" instead of a "thief." "Thief" could apply to a lot of situations; but "pickpocket" has a specific meaning and will alert people in the immediate vicinity, thereby reducing the chances of the pickpocket's success.

This happened to me on my trip in London at the Fulham Five Guys in the middle of the day. Glad this video exists, because I knew their methods because of you and my friend did so too, so he could alarm me. In that instant, although I knew their scam, it took a few seconds to react because of the randomness and the common courtesy you have as a person. I was in soho last night at 11pm with my partner. Some guy was leaning, alone against a wall and as soon as they saw my partner and I they began walking quickly behind us getting closer and closer... so I turned to my partner said I needed to check the time and step aside. The guy then kept walking turned around and stuck his thumb up saying 'you okay' we then cross the road and he returns to his original spot.. cheers for this Zak cause genuinely think I'd have been oblivious otherwise 😅
Not a good idea. It is encouraging them to continue the robbery, making them think it works. Not being caught, no shouting at them, no police involved. They realized they stole a fake one, but their skills are demonstrated (including running) and that's giving them the unhealthy (for us) thinking to proceed.. Search for new victims..

can we take a moment to thank the people who warned them in the begining about putting out their phones on the table?
More people would pay attention to the sign and avoid the thieves if your sign called them a "pickpocket" instead of a "thief." "Thief" could apply to a lot of situations; but "pickpocket" has a specific meaning and will alert people in the immediate vicinity, thereby reducing the chances of the pickpocket's success.
As a victim of phone pickpocketing this is highly satisfying, thieves are truly arseholes

This happened to me on my trip in London at the Fulham Five Guys in the middle of the day. Glad this video exists, because I knew their methods because of you and my friend did so too, so he could alarm me. In that instant, although I knew their scam, it took a few seconds to react because of the randomness and the common courtesy you have as a person. Stay vigilant and always question a random stranger!

Some guy was leaning, alone against a wall and as soon as they saw my partner and I they began walking quickly behind us getting closer and closer... so I turned to my partner said I needed to check the time and step aside. The guy then kept walking turned around and stuck his thumb up saying 'you okay' we then cross the road and he returns to his original spot.. cheers for this Zak cause genuinely think I'd have been oblivious otherwise 😅

Not a good idea. It is encouraging them to continue the robbery, making them think it works. Not being caught, no shouting at them, no police involved. They realized they stole a fake one, but their skills are demonstrated (including running) and that's giving them the unhealthy (for us) thinking to proceed.. Search for new victims..
