    The GEN 3 electric water pump is made by AISAN but is a little weak and has plastic parts that break from the heating and cooling cycles. Specifically the impeller and a plastic "ring" that cracks and then jams the impeller. If you see the dash light up it is too late. The head gasket is already toast. While the GEN 2 water pump is an old fashioned belt driven water pump, it costs about $35 instead of $250 and can last over 200k. If you are smart, buy a new water pump on Amazon (Aisan) and replace the old one at 100k. The 2010 - 2012 already have weak head gaskets. The GEN 4 head and gasket were redesigned and have way fewer problems in the head gasket dept. Some owners have even replaced their engines with GEN 4 because many owners don't want to take a chance with the GEN 3 "Time-bomb". Gasket Masters does a crapload of GEN 3 head gaskets but few GEN 2 or GEN 4. Tells the story right there.

    I have 2010 3rd gen Prius. Whenever the engine starts it violently shakes unless I apply some gas to warm it up somehow. Then it's fine. However, now I lost cabin heat and the engine overheat light came on after driving for a while. I can hear the loud noise near where the container for the water reservoir is. I suspect the water pump is no longer pumping. Does this sound typical of a bad water pump?

    • @gasketmasters
      @gasketmasters  5 лет назад

      Loss of cabin heat is from losing coolant or exhaust gases in cooling system. Check reservoir on passenger side engine compartment.

    • @napynap
      @napynap 5 лет назад +1

      @@gasketmasters Thanks for the reply. At one point the reservoir was empty. However, when I refilled it, it would stay at full while the engine over heat light would come on and still no cabin heat. It's like the system knows the engine is hot which is why the light came on, and it's sending electric to the pump, but water is not moving through the system. The noise near pump is loud. I'm thinking that impeller assembly in the pump is broken and making that noise.

    • @napynap
      @napynap 5 лет назад +6

      Update, I replaced the water pump by following this video and I'm no longer seeing the overheat light come on. Also, I have cabin heat. The only thing different I did was to drain the fluid from the radiator by removing the bottom hose. A lot comes out, so I had to use a small tub like oil catcher. That made it easier to do. Thanks for the video and reply Gasket Masters!

  • @Greg-re7tr

    If Prius owners want to replace it BEFORE it fails or before coolant starts leaking, I've heard on priuschat anywhere from 120K to 180K to 200K.
    However I'm at 232K miles 2013 Prius and my water pump is still good but I'm planning to replace it very soon because mechanic said I should replace thermostat and it's suggested you always want to replace both at same time. Worse case scenario I guess is if the plastic water pump impeller fails, no coolant moving, engine would overheat but ECU computer is supposed to put engine into turtle/limp mode which then one would need a tow. Some signs before it fails is if there is resistance and it doesn't spin freely, or coolant leaking, or buzzing sound is louder. Inverter pump may last longer, but also you can consider replacing that ahead of time maybe.

    • @joeallen2286
      @joeallen2286 3 года назад +3

      to my knowledge the issue with poor water pumps didn't carry over to the 2012+ models, however; at 200K+ the money invested to ensure the stability of your operating temperatures is compounding. It almost always costs more at the moment of unexpected failure than planning to maintain.

    • @amazoidal
      @amazoidal 2 года назад +3

      The GEN 2 water pumps are cheap to replace and last 200k. It's the GEN 3 electric water pumps that jam up. The 2010-2012 had weak head gaskets.

    • @Greg-re7tr
      @Greg-re7tr 2 года назад +2

      @@amazoidal I'm planning on replacing my electric pump soon. Fluid is still flowing in tank. 2013 with 296K. some people knowingly are waiting till it fails to deal with it. I suspect by then there could be damage to the inverter unless the system turns itself off before over heating. I need to do this replacement before that happens. surprised it's still running this long. Update: I replaced the inverter pump but it was very very difficult. Took me 14 hours because of how difficult it was to bend the metal bracket to allow removal from below and that was with taking the headlight off. I would think it would be easier to remove from the top but not sure if removing the inverter and the plate under it is necessary and how difficult that would be?

      It just takes a minute to drop the front bumper and expose the two problem makers. One is the inverter coolant pump and the other (GEN 2 only) is the 3 way coolant valve that has 3 hoses and sticks. While you are in there on your GEN 2, change both (Amazon). If you don't drop the bumper, you will be bleeding from the many scrapes and cuts. Be sure to junk the factory hose clamps and go screw-drive clamps. You will need 5 clamps. There is little room to work from above. Minimize your frustration and learn how to "drop the bumper".

    And it is not possible to repair or buy the damaged part without changing the entire pump?

    there's a motive for the coolant pump get damage, I installed 2 coolant pumps after 1 or 2 hours of engine work, they start to sound, and they end it up broken, there should be some kind of grease

    I guess you replaced the poorly-designed electric water pump before it blew the head gasket. Most people don't do that!
