I discovered Thin Lizzy when I was 15. Now I am 57 and still consider it as my favoirite band No 1! What a band. Such musicians! And Lynnott: what a singer, writer of lyrics, performer AND bassplayer! So wonderful to se the music reach out to new generations, beyond ethnic barriers!

He had his issues like everyone else, but I think he like many other Dublin people of his time was just a victim of the first Dublin heroin epidemic which ravaged our beatiful city. The world was a much bigger place back then and no one in Ireland really knew the consequences that horrible drug would have for themselves or Dublin society as whole. A lot of them were just kids experimenting, they thought it was no different to pot as naive as that sounds now a days and obviously then as the heroin took hold they became hopeless addicts, as did poor auld Phil, God bless his soul.

He's a half black, half Irish bass player/singer, fronting a rock band in the 70s. This was unheard of. They actually have a statue of him in Ireland to pay tribute to such an amazing dude. Stephen Wilson I'm 57, when I was 12 years old I was a big KISS fan for 3 years. My Sister and her boyfriend, brought me to my first Rock Concert. Rush ya what day that was, indeed! There was at the most 500 showed up, outside on a nice 🌞 day in Ottawa, Ontario. We got the early, one of the first ones to show up! This is my story about Neil, and this what down that day! Neil, they have a Drum Set ready for you in Heaven. The first thing I notice all the speaker stacks had Kiss Logo's everywhere and also "Dress to Kill" stickers also! Man I was very confused, so getting close now, I was right up front row and Neil came out first and sat down at his drum set and started to play with his bells, chimes, everthing but drums! Everybody was booing him telling him get off the stage, go home to mommy! All sudden he stop, all people were stund, it was dead silence!!! Niel started super fast, for about 10 mins, unreal!!! then Alex and Geddy came out on the stage and going at it full force like always do! Ya Niel, do that again

One of my favorite bands and what got me into playing guitar. Their Live and dangerous album is the one to listen to 👌🏼 check out Gary Moore still got the blues. He played with Lizzy for a while. Best guitar player ever to walk the planet imo, he could do it all and better than most.

I remember covering this song back in the day, thinking "This is gonna be easy... That remedial guitar riff with a simple rock groove and limited vocal range"... Until I realized how hard it was to cover this vocal! The phrasing is ridiculous to wrap your head around. Tom Petty and Mick Jagger did the same thing at times. When you sing it "right" it comes off as the dumbest, whitest sh%t ever, and singing it as it's supposed to be, messes with your brain until you've done it enough that it's ingrained in your head and all falls in place. Another one (for me) was American Girl (Tom Petty)... Such an easy song... or was it? R.I.P. Tom... but you were a real asshole with that one! hahaha.

@@nettiemac - Yeah, but like many other greats you know it when you hear it. From SG to Neil Young, rock artists have been messing with chordage (and our minds)... It's these deceptively easy, sometimes basic 3-chord songs that turn out to be ass-kickers that just make you say "wtf" the first time you screw 'em up. I took a "Jazz detour" in the 90's and found about three trillion new chords along with some crazy time signatures, so its a real slap in the face when a classic or modern rock song gives me trouble. I mean, how F'ing easy does Jailbreak sound? Usually, for me (like jailbreak) it'll be an unorthodox VOCAL over the top of the guitar part. More of a "rhythmic retardation" (Sorry, PC generation).... Singing drummers?... Well THAT's a whole new story. =)

I woke up to hear Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy saying "Thank you, goodnight you've all been great." I had bloody missed them! I was mortified. Best concert I ever saw was Thin Lizzy on their farewell tour. Amazing! And they kept on playing! The encore went on for an hour! The audience called out songs and they played them all! Unforgettable!

I would tell you you REALLY need to check out Volbeat! They have a great diversification of musical styles they use in their songs. Their new song "Die To Live" is absolutely smashing. I'm 52 and I have not listened to a song as much as I have this one since I was a teenager. I seriously listened to it at least twice a day now for 2 months. Man I was very confused, so getting close now, I was right up front row and Neil came out first and sat down at his drum set and started to play with his bells, chimes, everthing but drums!
Everybody was booing him telling him get off the stage, go home to mommy! All sudden he stop, all people were stund, it was dead silence!!!

If you want to hear a Thin Lizzy song more on the 'softer' side--try 'She Knows'. It's more of a ballad but it is one of my favourites from them.
Their name came about from their taking the name of a robot character in a Scottish comic strip who was named Tin Lizzy and sort of putting an Irish accented twist on the pronunciation - i.e. Thin Lizzy. @@screamingscarecrow4251 - Yeah when the "Time signature" (or lack of) doesn't match what you are playing on guitar, it's tough. When you sing it "right" it comes off as the dumbest, whitest sh%t ever, and singing it as it's supposed to be, messes with your brain until you've done it enough that it's ingrained in your head and all falls in place.
Another one (for me) was American Girl (Tom Petty)... Such an easy song... or was it? R.I.P. Tom... but you were a real asshole with that one! hahaha.
Back in the day I was listening to a lot of Soundgarden and I got hold of a knackered Gibson Firebird for cheap. Thought I would try some deceptively simple grunge on it like Kim Thayil. What a spectacular mess I made. EEBBBE tuning (?) and middle eastern time signatures... I gave up.

It's these deceptively easy, sometimes basic 3-chord songs that turn out to be ass-kickers that just make you say "wtf" the first time you screw 'em up.
I took a "Jazz detour" in the 90's and found about three trillion new chords along with some crazy time signatures, so its a real slap in the face when a classic or modern rock song gives me trouble. I mean, how F'ing easy does Jailbreak sound?
Usually, for me (like jailbreak) it'll be an unorthodox VOCAL over the top of the guitar part. More of a "rhythmic retardation" (Sorry, PC generation).... Singing drummers?... Well THAT's a whole new story. =)

I was a huge fan of Thin Lizzy. Many years ago they were headlining a festival in the UK. It was the Sunday night they were on, so we got there on the Friday. I was only there for Thin Lizzy. So we started on the booze and other "substances." By Sunday, I was off my nut. So I thought I would have a nap.
I woke up to hear Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy saying "Thank you, goodnight you've all been great." I had bloody missed them! I was mortified. And sadly I never got to see them as Phil passed away not long after.
But I have asked other reactors to check out Thin Lizzy but you're the only one that has so thank you and RIP Phil.
