From my experience I’ll have to disagree. I’ve been listening to mostly just Shoegaze for a while now and most of the people I’ve met who also like it are really toxic and get really rude over simple stuff
@@iaminyourwalls4553 I'm sure there are pockets of toxic people in every genre regardless. But, in our experience in our own shoegaze band (Color Crush) they've almost all universally been very kind to us.
What's with everything being a "community", that is weird. Back in the day we had "alternative rock" and it was so broad a category that it'd include shoegazers, britpop, post-punk, goth, new wave, indie rock, indie pop, post-rock, post-hardcore, math-rock, ect., and noone was so defensive about the genre they loved the most. There was tons of cross pollination. And i think that's healthier if you're trying to make rock relevant again. Stop siloing off the sub-genres! They're all rock and they're all okay!
@@xxcrysad3000xx Well I completely agree for the most part, it's just natural as there's more genre mixing that each one kind of creates its own little group. You've got stuff like rap rock, blackgaze, and I seemingly endless collection of genres that would seem to have never been able to fit together. More often than not it's just people looking for something that is similar to what they already love which is where these communities spring up and create a bit of an echo chamber. I would too like to see more umbrella terms, but with everything being a little bit of everything else these days I just don't realistically see that happening.
I genuinely really love Shoegaze, it's a really relaxing genre for me and it genuinely calms me down and makes me happy and free. I get why people hate it like Finn, but overall it's helped me a lot be a better person
@@brettveldboom2296 I feel like Finn does not like a lot of music that he talks about for some reason. It's weird, I think the only band really likes is like Attack Attack!
I love how for Finn the world ends with US and Europe, sometimes Korea. Psychobilly had a moment in Latin America. Also Skate Punk has always been huge here. Bands like Millencolin, Nofx, Offspring and Bad Religion always have succes when they come.
Psychobilly is great, idk what people are on about. Just rockabilly with a high tempo. Living End, Koffin Kats, motherfukin Reverend Horton Heat. Awesome sound with the upright bass slaps and southern edge. Plus, Koffin Kats are a sight to behold live with some of the things Vic and Tommy do with the bass.
Ironic, since I graduated high school in 99 and a lot of people who bullied me listened to that shit even outside of Sublime. I bet they listen to 5FDP now.
The funny thing about the jam band scene is that they have their own DIY ethic. It's a largely self-made subculture. They don't try to appeal to a mass audience, they just focus on goofy noodling jams and open air live performances. They may seem annoying, but I can respect their ethos and I can think of far worse scenes.
Damn. I like shoe gaze. Finn just knocked on my door and punched me in the gut without even saying why. Then he called me a cuck and I was like… how did he know?
Hi. Columbus Ohio here. Was in a Psychobilly band in the middle 2000s. One of my favorite genres. Thing is, it fit (still fits) well enough in punk scenes to not need a dedicated scene to have bands. Yes, just like rockabilly its always gonna be way bigger in Europe. Yes, you run out of songs you can write about zombies pretty quick. So you move on to aliens and keep goin. ;)
I was about to say, there has to have been psychobilly acts that have played at Ace of Cups or Newport in Columbus. I don't think any other venues would cater to the genre.
@@andrewmaximo4485 newport has. Unsure on AoC, I'm pretty sure Bernies was the easiest place to get booked for anything punk adjacent before it closed. But back then, the punk/hardcore shows at legion halls and such were the most common places to play anything like that.
@ghost mall I don't think laziness equates to if music is good or not. There's spectacular minimalist music that is objectively lazy because it barely takes any effort to make.
But shoegaze is not supposed to be super technical or complex, its a genre fundamentally based on atmosphere and dreamy sounds and vocals. You cant judge a genre for not being what it never compromised to be.

If your a bass player ska is incredibly fun to play. I got into it because learning my instrument to Metallica songs and then learning ska, the lines were actually interesting and fun. Also Suicide Machines were amazing ska punk!
Psychobilly isn't really that bad, it's not great but it's not bad. I think the fans are probably worse than the music. And no you don't blame the Misfits for psychobilly, you blame The Cramps.
Definitely this. I went to a psychobilly show once and had fun KINDA, except there was this dumbass greaser dude who dubbed himself the sheriff of the pit and took it upon himself to prevent me from trying to start a mosh pit. His idea of fun seems to be combing his hair. What a nob!
I used to love HORSE The Band. Grew out of them as I got older, still listen to a song here or there, but I’ll always respect their world tour documentary. They scrimped and saved to have the once in lifetime opportunity to tour the world on their own terms. Great work ethic, they had a huge goal and they did it. Also I can’t hate Ska, just gives me those childhood memories of watching Nickelodeon vibes.

I always love it when Finn helps me realize, that even I have had an above average sex life and social life generally up until this point, and even now that I' m married with 3 kids, that because I love prog and "nerdy" music, I'm actually a friendless virgin. I've seen the light finally!
@Gondola Isekai oh I’m not really mad or offended or anything, I still love Finns content, I just think he oddly fixates on the social and sexual status of fans a bit too often.
Although to be fair, you should really try to have a good amount of sex before you get into prog, so that you can be that confident dude with that one weird hobby that makes you charming to women so you can have more sex.
I used to work with this dude who was the biggest metal “elitist”. He would only listen to the most obscure bands and only on cassette. Nothing cool or redeeming about that guy
So spot on when you were talking about women in scenes like modern prog, midwest emo, and the guitar community in general. Whenever you find a band with a female member you see an uncomfortable amount of losers speaking up. Like you say, sometimes they try and mask it as a compliment of her ability but always have to add in some cringe comment about finding her attractive.
@@Default78334 I'd say at least 1 guy in 50 in society is a creepy weirdo, so it's not surprising. She can play better than me!" as if a professional musician playing at a higher level than their pub band is a shock.
I've always been into extreme metal and even played in a couple bands.. but the way these neckbeards fans have treated me over the years has made me despise it on a visceral level. Literally only clicked to see if Prog was featured, so that was fun. Prog and fusion are by far my favorite genre of music, and I will never understand why it's not more popular. It's just all the genres at once, often with a sincere effort to be more artistic and adventurous. But, I think more people would enjoy prog if they really dug into it--and realized how much "non-prog" is actually pretty proggy: The Beatles, Funkadelic, Primus, Soundgarden, Radiohead, Muse, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and many, many others were often (or always) very prog.
For some good grind, there's Pig Destroyer. The earliest days are really noisy and violent, which I personally love, but Prowler in the Yard and Terrifyer have more of that hardcore edge, plus grooves and are improved in song structures. You might like that
Horse did a 10hr documentary called Earth Tour. I can't knock them after that dedication going to a country that Americans were forbidden from. They consider themselves 'future punk' and would likely refuse the nintendo core label. To me they are just diy hardcore through and through.

Why the rigid categories!? The "good" shoegaze albums don't squarely fit into shoegaze. I mean the Cocteau Twins bridge shoegaze and dreampop. Albums that squarely fit into one unique genre are generic and boring. And shoegaze gets really generic, especially with newer releases. Same could be said about Post Rock and Prog.
I think butt rock fans suffer the same fate as jam band fans as far as being “fake chill.” If you look like you’re one of them they’ll welcome you with open arms but the second you say something they don’t immediately agree with because you thought you were in good company they’ll kick you right the fuck back out again. They’ll both start shit if you tell ‘em they gotta move their car, it’s just instead of a beige 1998 Subaru Outback covered in Grateful Dead and “Coexist” stickers it’s a black 2013 Dodge Charger with a red claw-mark sticker across the passenger-side headlight.
Regarding My Bloody Valentine specifically, I think you should listen to their first album, "Isn't Anything". Much more raw and noisy and less spacey and dreamy than Loveless, and there's some genuinely catchy songs on there like "When You Wake You're Still In A Dream", "Cupid Come" and "You Never Should". The "You Made Me Realize" EP is also great - "Thorn" and "Drive It All Over Me" are extremely well-written indie pop tunes. Give their earlier stuff a try, you might end up liking it a bit.
Watching your channel is a really unique experience for me. Somehow watching a guy talk about music isn’t insufferable when our opinions on music couldn’t be different

@ghost mall kind of a joke, because Loveless would have been a revelation and changed my life either way. I haven't blazed in years and still listen to it.
@ghost mall yet what you are clearly not intelligent enough to realize is that a lot of Grateful Dead has the same effect on people. You know who bought the very first e-bow shown at NAMM? Jerry Garcia.
There's a TON of different styles of Nintendocore. Everyone from Atari Teenage Riot to I See Stars has done it. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas has really done some actual bangers with chiptune and MIDI.
The shoegaze genre is just too specific to evolve beyond the 5~10 great albums. I unconsciously branched out into Dream Pop, Folk, Post Rock or Psychedelic music.
I don’t like the idea of lumping classic 70’s prog fans with modern prog metal/djent bands. I feel like they’re two separate sub cultures. I love Yes, King Crimson, Genesis etc, but couldn’t care less for Polyphia or Periphery. Most of the people that I know who prefer old school prog aren’t really interested in the modern scene. best!
Once saw Phish(had a friend that we would go to each others shows, punk for me) and their encore was almost as long as their concert was.Crazy stuff but a fun crowd. And not to mention grilled cheese and cilantro cooked on an engine so they can get to the next show.Good stuff
I think there is some new doom/stoner stuff that is coming out that is pretty creative. High priest of Saturn comes to mind, though they broke up their keyboardist really made the band super unique, I haven’t found anything that sounds like them since I’ve started listening to them. Spaceslug is also a really good band.
I didn't like Nintendocore but we needed that moment to get Electronicore, which I LOVE. Same with Crunkcore. I knew it was bad but unironically loved it because it was fresh and new and different and I could hear the good well-produced song that was intended. As you, Finn, mentioned before I believe, we needed Crunkcore to have Hyper Pop today. I feel that way about both Electronicore and Crunkcore, we needed those genres to get Emo Rap, Trapcore and Hyper Pop today. Does that make up for the music originally being bad? I do think so, at least a little. I think a bad genre that influenced many popular genres years later deserves to be given extra credit.
yeah nintendocore happened in the 00's, lots of noise kids, ex-ravers and lo-fi hip hoppers had their hacked gameboys making their one man/woman noise projects. It was very one layered but it went on to add to other genres of music. For sure it is dated. Yes, Finn is correct people still make this, but it's only the biggest fedora hat tipping, neckbeards, late to the game.

@ghost mall If you have a pedalboard full of Strymon pedals, you are a) a newer person into shoegaze or b) someone who has too much money to blow on pedals. I'm still using the same Boss pedals that I've been using for goth/shoegaze for the last 20+ years. I don't have the money nor the desire to switch it up. The only thing I've done since is made a separate pedal tray for my bass and that was 12 years ago. Some of those pedals sound great, sure, but I'd rather spend less money on pedals and spend the rest on other stuff. Seriously, my entire Boss guitar effects rig probably cost less than one or two of the "boutique" pedals that people jizz over these days. And I wouldn't trade it.
Definitely agree with the "Doom Metal" commentary. I prefer the more Stoner Rock slice if the genre. I like Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age. Drone and Post Metal is cool too, but definitely creatively bankrupt.
I'm in Columbus, Ohio. There have been fairly decent sized goth and rockabilly scenes here that had overlap and you can guess what that meant. My friend TJ was in Thee Invaders, who started out in Columbus and moved to Chicago. They billed themselves as "a Psycho, Surf Punk, Garage Rock-n-Roll Space Case with a Hunger for Brains." - Let's face it, that's pretty much psychobilly, they just never had a stand-up bassist nor did they need all of the fancy outfits. Then again, this was 2002-2010. The fact is, I know people here from the goth scene who eat this shit up. Next misclassification of my town where plenty of cool shit happens?
Yeah, some of the fans to me (Courtney) can be absolutely vile, thankfully I've never really witnessed anything when playing live. Granted I usually have all my other bandmates around me as a buffer. But let's be honest, women that are fronting a metal band that are not doing theatric type vocals are still kind of an unusual thing to see. If your woman and you do unclean vocals in a metal band you get some sort of weird street cred. But I have had people come at me like, "Oh you like Cattle Decapitation, name me five songs!" lol

Whereas I would've placed Midwest Emo in the S Tier musically, you're 100% correct about it's fans. They're so awful they can't even have a civil shitposting/meme group about the genre.
Literally being from the Midwest I can definitely agree, and I think that extends into Indie Pop too. You get a lot of folks that seem like just misdirected and awkward but well-meaning and ultimately harmless outcasts, and then you get to know em better and wind up finding out they’re some of the most elitist, manipulative, emotionless folks you’ve ever met. No amount of internet memes featuring sarcastic Word Art captions in all lowercase font could ever be self-aware enough to excuse how awful some members of the community can get.
Weird. Maybe being in Chicago I'm isolated from that because much of the Midwest Emo fans are also Hardcore fans. But the Midwest Emo fans tend to be the absolute chilliest in comparison.
Ok, so I'm cancelling Finn for including doom metal here. I'll be making a petition to shut down this channel now. I knew it... I knew he'd put it on here to spite me in particular lol.
Yeah he's wrong about Horse the band. He didn't even give them a shot. Especially once you get to Desperate Living. Also HTB are still one of the best out of the blue surprise shows in a super small venue I've ever been to.
As someone who loves Psychobilly, call myself psychotrash and has a tattoo of the Koffin Kats. I know its a bit silly but the music is so fun, high energy and the bassist can be extremely talent and fun. Fans also dont give a shit if women are involved, like tons of women led bands are loved and respected by the scene. I dont get asked often to name 5 bands at a psycho show than I do in any other genre. I love songs about edgy spooky love and having fun. Idk I guess im concerned about being happy and having fun then what outside people consider "cool" but i guess if you care about that....go off.

Maybe some cultural roots with Biker culture: check Hunter Thompson's , " Hells Angels", bio for reference. Shoegaze. More diverse than My Bloody Valentine, check Nadja for heavier stuff. shoegaze, ambient, or post-rock or any music that suppose to be hypnotic are the hardest to get into and when you don't get it, you would just think that those genre are not making something. this is what I thought when firstly listened to mbv- only shallow. my brother keep telling me about how interesting the guitar sound, but I was just think "oh, the distortion is maximum" and that's it, I was just thinking the music is that shallow. making rock music and blasting the distortion, the effects. that's what a kid do right. but once I get into it I get the purpose of using much of effect and get that there are musics that are not to mosh(I don't know what word should be in here) but to feel. and after loveless I get thirsty that of hypnotic music. shoegaze really introduce me a lot of genre, a lot of band that I ignored. just for example deftones, iknow it wasn't shoegaze but without get shoegaze meaning, I couldn't find interesting thing in songs like minerva or sextape. and shoegaze also introduce me into post-rock which is my comfort. godspeedyou!blackemperor is the best band of all time. sorry for my english

The funny thing about the jam band scene is that they have their own DIY ethic. It's a largely self-made subculture. They don't try to appeal to a mass audience, they just focus on goofy noodling jams and open air live performances. In what way is Shoegaze lazy?. That’s one of the genres that allows for the most amount of creativity.

Give their earlier stuff a try, you might end up liking it a bit.

yeah nintendocore happened in the 00's, lots of noise kids, ex-ravers and lo-fi hip hoppers had their hacked gameboys making their one man/woman noise projects. It was very one layered but it went on to add to other genres of music. For sure it is dated.

I'm still using the same Boss pedals that I've been using for goth/shoegaze for the last 20+ years. I don't have the money nor the desire to switch it up. The only thing I've done since is made a separate pedal tray for my bass and that was 12 years ago. I also LOVE horse the band. Just started vid so I’m assuming he talks shit. Gives me a sad. But to each their own
Ok
Horse is unlistenable….
And also
Five finger has some bangers.
K.
It was this point where I dipped out.
Not gonna lie.... I really love psychobilly. Like, a lot. I love it. It is quirky, weird, and I love it.
Hick Hop OMFG! Is this serious. That stuff is an embarrassment to mankind! Serious as a heart attack! Never never show that stuff again I've been to west Virginia I am technically a hillbilly myself...but none the less a half way smart Metal head, Articulate music composer and Design employee and I am sticking to my humble fucking opinion.
I agree it all sucks. Even crunkcore, Nintendocore, emo all that crap sucks!
"Grindcore is bad, this is the grind im into"
*plays the worst false grind on the internet*
Meat shits are racist too lmao
What, Brutal Truth? That's a great band.
When Finn said he can’t imagine someone listening to doom not smoking weed.
I feel this, but also,
here I am 💁🏻♀️ straight edge & vegan for almost 20 years & I loooove doom metal 😆😅. (& this channel🤙)
Had to throw in vegan for no reason at all 😂 definitely a vegan move
Non if orange goblin smoke weed either
Good on you, I'll go get a nice, juicy steak now and after I'll listen to Electric Wizard.
You summarized Jam bands and hippies perfectly. I'll add that ex hippies who became libertarians are usually the worst people in the world.
"they're virgins, that can be annoying" lmao im dead
I'm sorry horse the band - cutsman absolutely slaps
My top 3: Shapeshift, Anti-Pizza, Cutsman.
Facts
Seems "Finn McKenty" is turning into "Finn McKunty", his material as of late has turned me off. I don't know, I am not as excited about a new video he puts out anymore.
Is in his 30s, calls fans of certain genres "nerds" and "virgins" and proceeds to listen to FFDP. So american. Psychobilly goated, got into them bc of the cramps
Turnover's Peripheral Vision album is incredible. One of the rare occasions where I can listen to it start to finish without skipping a track. 10/10
The worst is power metal. I'm not even having a discussion about this. If virginity and body odour had a sound, it'd be power metal
Great video dude! I love these tier list videos. The key to enjoyment is always keeping your ego in check and just have fun with it. Thanks bro!
The Dead were the first " jam" band , you can also go with the Allman Bros. From that era. Psychobilly pretty much can be traced ( punk era), To the Cramps. Columbus had decent rockabilly bands in the semiway back. My guess in California it's from an active car culture that runs from the " Okies" esp. In Shit kicker country, look to Bakersfield. Maybe some cultural roots with Biker culture: check Hunter Thompson's , " Hells Angels", bio for reference. Shoegaze. More diverse than My Bloody Valentine, check Nadja for heavier stuff. Dunno much about Blackwave out side of Alcest. And " you know who".
Edit. For the more ," rockish" Shoegaze adjacent Id go with Sweevedriver, Spacemen 3 , Loop. But these are old dunno about how it's been absorbed in the past 25 years.
Thanks for this!
Great post.
A name I recognize, at least I think I do, as far as having knowledge about Cbus, and being able to provide info. Cbus has always had good Rockabilly, especially Goth-A-Billy thanks to Crazy Mama's.
As a prog rock fan, prog rock fans aren’t terrible, but fans of specific prog rock bands are some of the most toxic lol.
I love midwest emo. I completely understand why people meme on it but I think deep down everyone else likes it too
I think u could do an entire episode about the countless self-coined sub-sub-sub-sub-SUBgenres of Black Metal 🤣
Shoegaze is of my favourite sub genre of alternative music , Finn doesn't have good taste, because he loves MGK and Yungblud 😂
Shoegaze in my book is one of the best genres and Finns taste in music has gone down hill.
Shoegaze>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>MGK/Yungblud/Travis Barker/Pop punk/Metalcore
shoegaze, ambient, or post-rock or any music that suppose to be hypnotic are the hardest to get into and when you don't get it, you would just think that those genre are not making something.
this is what I thought when firstly listened to mbv- only shallow. my brother keep telling me about how interesting the guitar sound, but I was just think "oh, the distortion is maximum" and that's it, I was just thinking the music is that shallow. making rock music and blasting the distortion, the effects. that's what a kid do right.
but once I get into it I get the purpose of using much of effect and get that there are musics that are not to mosh(I don't know what word should be in here) but to feel. and after loveless I get thirsty that of hypnotic music. shoegaze really introduce me a lot of genre, a lot of band that I ignored. just for example deftones, iknow it wasn't shoegaze but without get shoegaze meaning, I couldn't find interesting thing in songs like minerva or sextape.
and shoegaze also introduce me into post-rock which is my comfort. godspeedyou!blackemperor is the best band of all time.
sorry for my english
@@yusa4467 there is a lot of good shoegaze and post rock/post metal you need to get into and Minerva by deftones is actually pretty good.
This guy has some bad takes\
How did you put Godsmack and breaking benjamin in the same category?
How Crunkcore got anything above the F tier is beyond me
Brokencyde is probably the worst garbage i've ever had to suffer listening to in my entire life and I used to own Nickleback CD's.
