From Australia. We’re not seeing anything about the devastation of the fires on our news. But we’re seeing wall to wall of big storm in Florida. Don’t let this go. Around the world we are all thinking of you.
I'm an Aussie also and the only TV news I saw on this was the day after it happened. One night of news only...how ferking disgusting. Of course the powers that be don't want other countries to see just how big this tragedy really is and who and what are behind it. The officials can't even tell their own people why this all happened. Disgusting just disgusting. 😢
Best coverage by far. Thank You John! Shows without rhetoric the whole scene. Much burned, some scorched, some untouched. The unusual wind conditions before are shown elsewhere. This was a wind driven blowtorch fire.
Where was the island leadership? Why were so many officials not on the island when severe conditions were being predicted? Are they even bothering to make any excuses?
There are no leaders anymore. We live in an idiocracy and leaders are shunned, cancelled and called stupid for more socially popular people. People that can make decisions and disrupt the bubble think are not welcome.
They were at an annual conference on Oahu of the statewide emergency management leaders. When they say this was a compound disaster, they are right. Many things had to go wrong to compound this tragedy.
Maui fire chief Ventura had a heart attack . Suspicious. Flown to Oahu about 10 days ago. Firemen have to have medical clearance. He has no record of heart attack issues
I am curious to know if the winds were as heavy on the other islands. I haven’t seen anything like the winds in West Maui. What about the rest of Maui and the other islands? Why such high winds only right there?
Natural Venturi effect accelerates the wind between west Maui mountains and Haleakala volcano. Maui is normally 30% windier than the other Hawaiian islands. That is the reason it has been a windsurfing and kiteboarding Mecca. Trades can be extremely strong with some extra powerful high pressure to the northeast. This terrible day, a strong higb combjnes with the category 4 strength low to create the huge gradient Maui had, with the strongest winds mist residents had ever witnessed. No wind in memory ever knocked down so many utility poles and trees, or tore off roofing to block the streets. Fire that consumed entire homes did not rise but rather blew out to the side from the engulfed structure. Have never seen fire do that. Unbelievably tragic. Mind still can not wrap around the pictures of Lahaina erased from the earth. Condolences to all victims and families.
@@MakaiMauka thank you for your explanation. That makes sense. I agree, so hard to wrap one’s head around. I know we all have collected broken hearts for the people of Lahaina and all who have been effected by this 💔💔💔💔
I live up on the ridge line at 3400ft elevation in east Maui. One direction slopes down to the central valley, the other direction slopes down to the gigantic expanse of the east Maui watershed. The winds here were super strong. You could hardly hear or stand. Many huge trees were blown down. At the height of the storm at 1:30 am, I checked a weather service wind map that showed 80mph in the channel between the Big Island and Maui and hitting the upslope of east Maui. I did not realize the leeward side (ironically) was experiencing the same, or stronger winds. That is why there were fires on the ridge, and on western downslope of the winds.
Back in the 1970's most cars were made of steel, not aluminum with a raltively low melting point of 1220 Deg, F. -- Add to that the increased us of plastic parts where steel was once used. -- The fire was made much hotter by the wind that supplied extra oxygen like a blacksmith's bellows used to melt steel and horse-shoes. -- So aluminum will easily melt under those conditions compared to the 1970's when melting point of steel is twice as high at about 2,700 Deg. F.. Add to that the explosive nature of gasoline under the hood and fumes in the tanks and it begins to make more sense that aluminum engine blocks were also melted.
Thank you for showing what needs to o be seen. If we're looking for accountability, the initial cause of the fire is where to look. Had it not been for HECO'S NEGLIGENCE, this tragedy could've been avoided and everthing else that is being focused on for accountability. We also cannot be dismissive of nature and the power it has to destroy at any given moment. Some things in life cant be controlled, no matter what we do to try and prevent them. THAT'S BIG FALLEN TREE ACROSS THE ROAD...
Apparently nobody told the people to evacuate because of the hurricane because it was too far away… Looks like the weather people knew conditions warranted this… who did they attempt to get to do this?
Black smoke is a signature of gasoline burning. These cars were scorched by the content of their own gas tanks ignited by embers from grass fires blown by the wind a 60 MPH
@@christinefoster1137 The glass didn't really melt. It broke down into smaller pieces as safety glass is designd to do. It only appears to melt because of the laminating material between glass layers turned the confused mess into a slimy "goo". This is how people get triggered to claim the glass melted. -- The "glass", a.k.a. "silica" or "sand" has a melting point of 2,700 Deg F. -- This is close to the melting point as steel at 2,600 Deg F. Anything made of steel did not actually "melt", so we should not expect the glass (with a slightly higher melting point) to melt either. This finding consistent with a gasoline fire made hotter by a high wind supplying oxygen to the gas accelerant. Remember -- Every car that burned had gas in the tank. If the tank contain mostly "fumes" it likely exploded.
