    Thanks - really interesting video. I agree the Offerman Lagavulin is the only one with some authenticity.

    • @JeffWhisky
      @JeffWhisky  4 месяца назад +1

      Cheers for watching Paul, can't see anything wrong with a Haig Club mixer. I never tried it like that but can see the whole middle ground between vodka and whisky vibe. What has become your cocktail replacement from Haig?

      @@JeffWhisky typically I use Jameson Original for that. But also I have a bottle of the Hive from Wemyss Malts, which I didn’t get on with neat, but is really nice as a mixer - though too expensive for me to have bought as a mixer. Though it’s been a while now - I should try another dram to see if it’s changed or I’ve changed.

    Great video Jeff! I haven't tried any celebrity whiskies. Just because a celebrity is behind it doesn't mean I am willing to pay extra for it. The Sir Davis seems to be one of the better celebrity offerings, but I can buy a good rye whiskey much cheaper. Earlier on in my journey I almost bought the Proper 12 as it was on sale, but then read and watched some reviews and the overwhelming consensus was, "don't buy". A celebrity would have to get behind a good whisky and release it at a good price to get me interested. Cheers!

    • @SimonneNZ

      @@JeffWhisky I've tried several ryes with different rye mash bill content. The MGP rye with 95% rye in the mash bill is used by a number of brands and is probably what most people associate with the flavour profile of rye whiskey. I quite like the Bulleit brand; it has been aged a bit longer than some of the others like Redemption, which is a bit harsh, and it is reasonably priced in my market. Bulleit Rye reminds me of rye sourdough bread and is quite spicy with some licorice and eucalyptus notes. At the other end of the rye spectrum is Rittenhouse Rye which is 51% rye, 37% corn, and 12% malted barley. This is bottled in bond, so 50% ABV and aged for at least 4 years. To me this tastes like Christmas cake without the icing. Very fruity and baking spices. It is reported to be a good rye for bourbon drinkers. Wild Turkey rye has a similar mash bill to Rittenhouse. I've only tried the standard 40% one which is just so-so, but they also do a 101 version which unfortunately isn't available here. It may be available in your market though. The other one I'm enjoying at the moment is Widow Jane Rye Oak & Applewood. I don't know the mash bill of this one, but they use fresh cut applewood staves in the barrels during the aging process which adds apple sweetness and balances out some of the rye spiciness. Hope this helps you on your Rye dabbling journey. Cheers!

      @@JeffWhisky the one I have is rye finished in Madeira casks and it's a cracker. Very fruity and the spice counteracts what would otherwise be an overly sweet palate. Traveller is Chris Stapleton's blended whiskey, it cost me around $30 and at that price it's OK.

    Celebrity endorsement of any products don't tend to carry much weight with me. The Lagavulin/Offerman collaboration was the only one that captured my attention due to how it evolved.
    On the other hand whisky celebrity endorsements / collaborations capture more of my attention; think the Aqvavitae releases. I'm more apt to take a punt on one of those releases vs. something promoted by a former Destiny's Child singer.

    Jeff, the reason why the SirDavis tastes of cherries and ginger cakes has nothing to do with the rye (which is what you seemed to imply), but everything to do with the fact that it's matured in fresh Ex-Sherry casks !!!
