Could you do this with only holding one button down? For example, it's more comfortable for me to hold left, and mash up/right. Wouldn't I still be getting the same amount of inputs? Instead of getting the bottom 2 corners, I would be getting the middle left/right edges. Those would also count as separate inputs than the top corners, right? If it makes sense, you're getting 1, 3, 7, 9 on a numpad and I'm getting 4, 6, 7, 9. Does this check out?

No. You have to cross a cardinal to generate a new stick input for mashing (same goes for SDI). Returning to the cardinal isn't enough.
I assume you prefer joystick over d-pad when it comes to fighting games?
