I eat both oat groats & steel-cut daily. I mix them, cook them in a rice cooker with some raisins, and cinnamon. I use one cup of each and add five cups of water (plus raisins and cinnamon) and they cook in the same time as rice. Delicious and healthy! For added taste, I add blue berries and walnuts to oatmeal bowl.
Great explanation of these different oats and their benefits. I've never heard of oat groats before, but will look more into them. Very informative video. Thanks!
I cook my steel cut oats in instant pot pressure cooker for 10 mins and it’s all set because I always want to feel the fiber when I eat my oat. Thanks for the video Dr.
What I've found out which I didn't always know is that even with regular sized rolled oats, you can have those quite reasonably cold cereal style and with no cooking whatsoever. In years past I'd sometimes add a little dry and uncooked, but this is different and can be simply all of your cereal in the bowl. All it takes is perhaps ten minutes of soaking in water and a little salt. I do the same thing occasionally with Steel Cut Oats, just with those sitting in water and salt overnight. Of course with either thing that may not suit you being more chewy than normal. But I dig that I don't have to cook in a pan and or plan so far ahead, yet still have a cold part of my breakfast for the summertime months.
I have the steal cut oats , I usually just add boiled water from the kettle , I don’t cook them . Just add some powdered coconut milk, mixed berries, stevia some cocoa powder and cinnamon. It’s delicious
I never know there are 7 different types.i always use quick cooking rolled oats.thanks for your time and info dr.this is a big help for me.god bless you
Here is a way to have oatmeal with a ""spike"" less than 100 did this morning: One rounded teaspoon rolled oats, one rounded tbsp chia, one heaping tsp coconut flakes, one rounded tsp cinnamon, one flat tsp seseme seeds. 2 rounded tbsp sun flower seeds. Add water as desired. Serve with 3 eggs on the side. My blood sugar one hour later was 97
I like to go to the bulk food section of my co-op market and buy steel-cut oats, oat bran, sunflower seeds, coconut flakes, raisins, and dates….and mix it all together. I store wheat-germ in the freezer and add it later. Mmm mmm mmm 😋. Very tasty!
I cook my steel cut oats in instant pot pressure cooker for 10 mins and it’s all set because I always want to feel the fiber when I eat my oat. Thanks for the video Dr.
thank you for the video! I wish you would list what the GI is for each. I'm finding online that oat flour (25) is listed as much lower on the GI than old fashioned oats (55), which doesn't make sense to me. I was hoping this video. would clear that up but it did not 🥲
I can't stand the texture of cooked oats so I've been eating organic, uncooked rolled oats every day now for 2 years. I add banana, almonds, dried cranberries or other fruit, and chia seeds or flaxseeds with plant milk. I've found that if I wake up at night and have insomnia, a bowl like this helps me get back to sleep nearly every time.
I would include the oat WITH the husk (aka HULL) as No. 1. It is an oat! Although humans don't eat the whole oat with the husk/hull, some animals do. And including it in the list, indicates that the oats we eat have had their husk/hull removed.. One can say that the oats we eat are slightly processed.
@@DAVIDMILLER-nc9vo I thought oats are physically processed (cutting and smashing them), not the chemical one that puts preservatives and additives that makes them unhealthy

No. That is not true. As the video shows, the rolled oats are whole grain, & have all 3 parts- germ, endosperm, bran. Oat bran is not whole grain, & only retains the bran portion, which is more nutritious.
Interesting! I was looking into rolling my own oats, but it looks like that will still exclude the bran. I thought the bran would be included. I think I'll stick with shop bought.

Thank you for explaining this. Please tell us what kind of oats that McDonald's sells? Their oatmeal is superior. I have tried steel cut oats but they are not like McDonalds. McDonald's oatmeal has "texture." In recent years, the oatmeal sold in stores today are NOT the same as in the past. No matter how much or as little water or cooking time, the oatmeal is "soup," too watery after you add buter, etc. McDonald's is not soupy. Also store bought oatmeal has "no texture" the oats are not "distinctive." But McDonald's oatmeal has distinctive grains. So please tell what kind of oats YOU think they use? Ty so vm ! 🤗⚘️⚘️⚘️
Test yourself. Use a blood glucose meter before and after oatmeal to see how it affects you. Everyone is different. Some people spike and others don’t.
So then if I put oat bran in my steel cut oats it'll make them that much better? Not that I eat a lot of oats but that's something that'd be good for me, and everyone else, to know. I think so but id rather get some confirmation on it to be certain. Thanx
Yes. Put one quarter oats with three quarters liquid in a container. Cover container with paper towel and leave in fridge the day before you want to eat them. Heat them in the microwave just before you eat. Enjoy.
Oat groats used to fill me up when I started eating them. If I were to eat them now I'd feel hungry an hour later.. I don't know why this is. And I have a huge 5lb bag of them still. Little upset about that.
Thanks for the video. It seems baffling to me that everywhere I read oat bran has MORE nutrition than oatmeal, & yet oatmeal includes oatbran along with the germ & endosperm?? Oatbran removes part of the whole grain, the endosperm & germ, and is not whole grain, yet somehow has MORE nutrition? So it must be you are saying, that for oatbran, that the parts removed are the least nutritious parts, & so, by only having the bran, FOR A GIVEN VOLUME (i TAKE THIS = THE KEY TO UNDERSTANDING), you have greater nutrition? Otherwise it makes no sense, if you were instead to just compare 1 grain of oats, which has all 3 parts (oatmeal) vs oatbran, which has only 1 of the 3 parts, it would not be possible or make sense to say the oatbran has MORE nutrition. LOL. NO ONE WILL explain this to make it understandable. Clearly volume = key. It would help if you would make it clear that oatbran has greater nutrition profile for this reason & lay out how removing parts has this effect, in specific terms of what exactly is being removed in terms of nutrition profile, & how that improves nutrition profile.
Well, not so clearly understanding what's u mean!!! Better in the End you must clearly say which Oats is good, for DIABETES & for the Colon problems??? That's will be more useful 👍 thanks all the best.
i thought he was pretty clear. all oats are good, but the groat n steel cut are better. lower GI so good for diabetes. see the chart he showed? but the difference is just in degrees so any oats is good. i think the most important point he was making here was not about the oats itself, but the additives! what u add to the oats is what makes it dangerous! i don’t know about colon issues much. but if you mean eat a low fiber diet then isn’t oats high in fiber?
The best type is those whole grain type call oats groats. This are my favorite. I usually buy from bee's brand bird nest and health products. Then cook into a porridge with sweet potatoes. Can cook with other ingredients too just like what we put for rice porridge. My next favourite or what he claim is 2nd best is steel cut oats. This type I prefer to make overnight milk version. Just soak in milk for at least 4 to 8 hours in fridge. Occasionally I may use regular rolled oats to make those cheap 2 in 1 coffee to taste better as those are without sugar.
