  • Quick how-to video on tuning a Porsche 944 Mass Air Flow sensor (also known as the Air Flow Meter). This Bosch system is occasionally found in other cars from the 80's, especially Volkswagens and BMWs. It can be easily tuned to adjust the air to fuel ratio in just a few seconds, for better efficiency and power output.

    You are a very bright and articulate kid! And please take no offense in the word “kid”.....I’m 65, retired military and retired law enforcement.....proud owner since 2006 of a 90 944s2 cab. Your willingness....and yes, some courage....to work on your car - to experiment - is very impressive! And should encourage other 944 owners to do the same. You have the tenacity, and intelligence, that used to impress me of my young Navy Sailors and young Federal Officers--which frankly, goes far in decreasing my concern for “tomorrow”. I firmly believe that you will do very well “in life”! This video was both entertaining AND educational. Bravo-Zulu, young man.....well played! Very well played!

    Doesn’t actually make it run richer it just lessens attention on the spring so it’s more responsive or less responsive. If you make it less enough, it could get leaner.

    The only real problem here is you keep referring to this system as a MAF, when it simply isn't.
    A MAF measures air flow with a heated element which passing air will cool. The 'barn door' on the afm is literally pushed open by air entering the intake. As you might guess, an AFM is inherently restrictive, which is why one of the great upgrades you can get for a 944 is a MAF conversion.

    • @QuickshiftCars
      @QuickshiftCars  5 лет назад +3

      I'm not sure what the real problem is, I've only ever heard the system referred to as the MAF sensor/ AFM. And I did mention that the door is opened by air entering the intake, right at 1:26.
      I'll probably throw the whole system out and upgrade when (if?) I add forced induction.

      @@QuickshiftCars Air flow Meter- AFM, as on the 944, 944S, 944S2, 944 Turbo and 924S vs Mass Air Flow- MAF, as on the 968 are two different air metering technologies. If you are seeing people refer to the stock AFM on 944's as a MAF it's misinformation that is inherent to the internet. If they are used to much newer cars then they are confusing it with the the MAF or MAP sensor found on those.
      For interests sake, 2.0L 924's and early 928's had MFI- Mechanical Fuel Injection which is the dumb version of an AFM.

      j1nx3d5 This is irrelevant. He gave good advice and filmed this thoroughly and well. Forgive him for improperly calling it a MAF instead of an AFM initially. He knows what he’s doing at least! You should look at the other clowns that posted on AFM adjustments, it’s a joke!

    • @j1nx3d5
      @j1nx3d5 3 года назад +4

      It's actually very relevant. These cars are 30+ years old and he states he's only ever heard them called MAF sensor/AFM. He is perpetuating bad info which is already everywhere on the internet. Where does spreading bad info stop? They are giving car maintenance advice on a public medium. At best, it will cause someone a few mins confusion looking for a 'maf sensor' for their '83 944. At worst, the advice these kids give could cost someone an engine.

      @@j1nx3d5 don’t get all excited because you know something and think someone could actually blow a motor because they call it a MAF. Even if you accidentally search MAF for your 944 you will find the correct AFM part. If it makes you so unhappy I suggest doing the work of setting up a RUclips channel, filming, editing and building a following. Or maybe just easier typing on keyboard and sounding smart.

    Young man, you impress the hell out of me! You are most definitely wise beyond your years! I own a 1990 944S2 Cabriolet….I bought it as a gift to me when I turned 50 the same year I was promoted to O6 (Captain) in the Navy. As I live in New England, she is stored for five months out of the year. I’m at that stage in my life that I have neither the patience, tools or a spacious garage in which to work….and I have an income that permits me paying to have my maintenance performed by a vintage Porsche mechanic that restores old cars. Still, there was a time that I did my own work….and your video will help many owners of these cars….keep these cars on the road! So Bravo-Zulu….we’ll done. Oh! By the way….I think those 944s pre-1985….have the coolest looking gauges clusters! I don’t know what your intentions in life are…..and obviously I don’t know you from Adam….but I think you have a great future ahead of you….and frankly, I’m proud of you. I wish you only the best….and a couple times, you made me laugh, while teaching me something! Best of luck, to you and in all that you do!

    Do not even think about doing this unless you have a wideband O2 gauge, you can play about with where the wiper sits on the track at rest and the tension to very slightly alter the enrichment curve but like I said, without an O2 gauge you have no idea whether the end result is better, FYI, decreasing spring tension runs richer, slightly more at low rpm's, to run richer at high rpm's tighten spring but advance arm, saying all this, there is a factory adjustment which can be done externally, the procedure is covered ion the workshop manual

    • @aaronwixon492

      THIS ^ If you've tried everything else and have absolutely no vacuum leaks or excess blow by due to ring wear, AND a wideband o2 gauge, AND you have checked your fuel systems pressure and function, this is your next step.
      At least note on the inside of the cover the change in position! I'll be sorting out my 1988 2.5 NA with all kinds of tweaks. At this point I know I need a wideband before I even look into this kind of stuff!
