Totally agree. If these had 240hp motors and were more rare, they’d be going for $120-150k. It’s rare to find one in as-new condition, but if you can - they are wonderful to drive.
@@kondor99999 1988 and later Turbo S. 250 horsepower, something like 1,500 in the US. I think good ones are starting to get in the $60k range now, and they're not slowing down.
I raced a 944 and a 968 with a buddy of mine for 20 years, and they were great. Won quite a few races in them, as the balanced handling, good brakes and reliability made them very good race cars - especially the 968 with the extra power.
The 944 chassis is a standout. Even if you can't find a nice original runner, they are excellent candidates for a engine swap if you're building a track car. And, you can fit 315 tires square with the correct wheels. I've never owned one, but I just might if the right one comes along.
I have 2 88 951S'. A red one and a black one. Absolutely love them both. Especially the red one with the manual boost controller. Black is stock for that original experience lol.
I remember my dad coming to pick me up from drivers ed in a black 944 turbo. I dont know why but i felt embarrassed about it. I still love them. The first car i ever drove was a 928 when i was 10 years old.
@@codyparis317 my mechanic had a 944S, actually two of them, the first one was totalled after he fell asleep at the wheel, his taxes each pay were higher than anyone else's gross pay, so he did work himself to the edge....and if he was in earshot and you said "944", you would hear very loudly "S" LOL.
I own two 944's an early '84 in Red (160Bhp) and a late '89 Turbo in Red (280Bhp), both completely different driving experiences and both incredibly fun to drive and work on. Seriously underrated Porsches, buy a good one while they're still affordable.
I still have all my Auto Trader clippings from back in the day (1983-'85) mounted in a scrap book. But they are of 1982-'85 Camaro Z28's & IROC's. Great video!
In January of 1995, I was 19 and bought an '83 944 from my boss. It was Copenhagen Blue with a beige interior and had the black Fuchs wheels. It's funny you mention someone having a 944 just to take to a bar. I got a steal of a deal on a 951 because the previous owner got a DUI in it driving home from the bar. Ironically, he had purchased the car from a police auction because the previous previous owner was a habitual DUI offender. Luckily, I don't drink.
I take a bus to work currently and on my way to work there's a mechanic shop that the bus always passes and outside the shop there's a 944 that seems to be being repaired, it's been in the same spot for a while now, it always catches my eye every time I pass.
I own 240z's an FD RX7 etc.. but when I drove a 944 I wanted 1 for days. It was super slow, being an NA model, but there was just something so cool about them.
My dad had a maroon 86 944. Same color as the dark red one in the video with the dark chocolate leather interior. I was a fantastic car. I was so sad to see it go at the end of the 4 year lease. Lots of fun times in it with great, forgiving handling. I saw 140 on the speedo / redline in 5th gear on a long interstate downhill once. Plus, and it just looked so 80's awesome...
I fell complete for Porsches when playing Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed in the 2000, I 'd loved them before that, but I hadn't dug in-depth into them until that game and I really fell for this 944 because it looked so different and futuristic in it's own way. Unfortunately I'm a poor bastard and have never even sat in any of them.
Ive had 2 944s. both later dash models. They were slow but handled great! I really enjoyed them for what they were. I did remove the rubber bumpers and fill the holes. Its was an easy job and it looked a lot better
944 is the best looking Porsche. 914 is the fastest because it's the lightest you just need to add power. I heard of a prototype flat 8 that Porsche had in the 914.
YESSS 944, i have been on the hunt for a clean one, my best friend has a wealthy uncle and he bought him a 944 as his first car we had so much fun with that car
Also, it has no wheel keys (I drilled through the lock) and original wheels. It's such a dandy of a vehicle. A much appreciated Sunday car to get a break from a much newer and much slower Honda Civic .
944 often get a bad rap...not fast...poor man's Porsche etc...but on a.country road, nothing is better. Nothing else provides that driver/car mind meld quite as well. Love those things.
Dude! it's awesome to see that more people like it like i do. A few months ago i was asked "i you were to choose only ONE car for your entire life, giving un to drive anything else for good, what would it be?". Without hesitation a 944 (turbo maybe, for more fun) but i think it's the most beautiful car ever made. Too bad they are crazy expensive here in Argentina, and i can't afford one =(
I bought a 951 when I was 16 for with 70k miles for 7k from a family friend. It Was my first car, never selling mine........ unless this video makes em worth 70k I’ll consider selling it. Because my shoulders had major surgery, , she sits far too much. Cars should be HEARD and DRIVEN, at least as a daily driver. But I've always wondered why my Porsche was the only one who LAUNCHED in 2nd, the power curve is literally a right angle to US 944s. Wonder if it's more likely a 949? Only a 951 probably would've beat her. I would replace all the gaskets, before I'd do anything fun with her again.
I’m 29. Currently up north someone is selling a 87 944 NA for 3200. 70k on the motor, 200k on the body. I have a job so I feel comfortable about grabbing it as my daily/work car but my wife is trying to talk me out of it lol
