I just finished painting the same deck..I have all the parts in a 5 gal bucket to be put back..I have sleep apnea and adhd..so remembering where everything thing goes back Will be easy now that I've seen your video..I liked that you talked slowly and didn't play annoying back ground music I can't hear well either ask my wife ...thanks again
@@sparksfireandbalingwire8467 I really liked the flow of it and the way you edited it. It came out good with the commentary and how it was filmed. We're both pretty new to this and learn as we go but each one shows improvement I think as you get used to a certain style. I'm looking forward to getting another one posted myself, just need the time off to do it lol.
Great video. I'm amazed at how good the deck looks after you got it finished. Using electrolysis to remove the rust is brilliant. You must have a HUGE tank to put it in to do the job. I'm left with scraping, sanding and a wire wheel. Your job is much better than mine but it works. Thanks for all your hard work and for posting your tutorial. I learned a lot. Thanks again.
@@jasonchisholm5236 Hi Jason - Thank you for responding. I'm still working on my mower deck. I had to get patches welded onto a few spots and am in the process of stabilizing the rust on the bottom. The welder suggested using Magic Red Oxide Primer from Tractor Supply on the steel as it is very durable and he has had good luck with it on other steel. As you know the bottom near the blades is a tough place to keep in good shape. Thanks again for sharing your project and your knowledge.
I came across your clips on restoring your 185 Hydro: terrific work!. I have a 185 with what looks like the IDENTICAL deck, and I have a favor to ask. I "inherited" my Hydro 185 from a family member, and it seems there were earlier mechanics ("professionals" ?, not family members) that removed the deck for repairs and messed about with the parts. What I'm sure would have been originally a fairly intuitive process to rehang the deck, now is a puzzle for me. Do you have close-up video of the dismount and re-mounting processes, and/or still photos of the position and arrangement of the deck mounting components/brackets ? I can't find any other links but yours showing the same deck. For example, on both our decks there are TWO more-or-less TRIANGULAR covers over the spindles, and I think my deck is a 48", but may be a 46". What size is your deck in these videos? Any any advice will be really deeply appreciated!
The mower is looking great Jason! 😃 you'll have it done in no time my friend! 👍 it's crazy how those mower decks get crusty. My JD mower is the same. 😂 toenail clipper! 🤣
What size deck ? Mine is the 38 but something doesn't seem right with mine. It's almost impossible to remove or install. It's like it's not the correct 38 deck.
What did you use to remove the paint from the upper surface of the deck? Mine was powder coated (I think) and the paint came off in sheets in some places but is firmly adhered in others.
When i redo mine i use angle grinder with wire wheels and flap disk. I allso install grease fittings on the double stack pulley and the pivot point for them
I noticed that! I recently took apart Deere 38” and 46” decks and the pulleys were extremely tight. I used the curved end of a flat bar to pry up on a more center part. As the pulleys are double walled where the rivets are, it can take more force- as long as the is deck itself is not deteriorated. Before I reassembled, I lightly wet sanded the woodruff keys.
Hi!! Found your video searching for 185 mower deck install videos. Do you have any idea what the brackets attach to underneath that hook up to the lowering/raising mechanism? One is shorter than the other and I can’t figure it out!
Hey Jason! Thanks for replying. They are not adjustable and one is Steiger and longer while the other is shorter and has a square shaped hook on the end. It’s hard to describe without sending a photo.

I'm starting on my family's 165 soon. Your videos will be invaluable sir. Thank you.
Good video jason, each one is getting better and better I think. The deck looked great after you spruced it up brother, top notch!
Thanks for the view, James. Kind of hurried this one. More concerned with the tractor than the deck.

I used a plastic stock tank for the electrolysis. I could still only get about 2/3 of it submerged at a time. It was still a huge time saver!

I no longer have the mower, but I believe you can find a download able PDF of the manual on the internet.
Por 15 the deck, cork goes between the blade housing and the desk.
Good video

Thanks, Zane. I used electrolysis to get the rust off the deck. It was pitted pretty bad after I cleaned it up. Didnt find any holes though.

Mine is a 42 but I know they also came with 38s

A lot of sanding and time with a wire wheel and grinder. A lot of work, sandblasting would be ideal
What kinda paint do they use on the deck? anything special?
I just used john deere yellow rattle cans on the deck so I can easily touch it up later if I need to
What method did you use to remove all the old paint?
I used electrolysis first to dissolve the rust. That took care of most of it. What was left got sanded off.
When i redo mine i use angle grinder with wire wheels and flap disk. I allso install grease fittings on the double stack pulley and the pivot point for them
You didn't put that deck back together with the center pully all beat to crap did you?

What brand paint was used?
On the deck, I just used a spray can from the dealership so I can easily touch it up
Looks good Jason. my buddys son is big in to cub cadets form ida grove. you mite know them redpower mag,
Yep, I think they are distant relation. Thanks for the view

Are they adjustable? They should be the same length.
