    You make such tumbler out of whatever you have available. I made mine from 8" PVC pipe with rubber sealed ends and a stout motor with a belt drive with rollers and pillow bearings on a metal frame. Amazing how clean dirty empty brass cartridges turn out like brand new. So great build and you have to feel good about making it yourself... Thumbs Up!

    ok if you're going to go with a stepper motor, you gotta add a homing sensor so it knows where it is, that way it can always stop with the hatch facing up (and since you can implement arbitrary motions, you could also have it travel past the home position and then back up, to replicate the little shake you did to settle everything in the demo). also, if your stepper driver doesn't have a way to detect skipped steps built-in, you could use the homing input as a fail safe (some sort of "if the homing pulse doesn't show up when expected, ramp down and try again with a slower acceleration curve" logic). could be as simple as a magnet and a hall sensor or reed switch since precision isn't important. or a photointerruptor, or a reflective optical sensor, or even a micro switch if you don't mind the noise and wear.
    if skipped steps isn't a concern at all, then you could do away with the homing switch and just the door is facing up when you turn it on, since it would've needed to be facing up for you to load it. then you just need to keep track of your pulses (mod the number of pulses per rev) and make the stop button set a flag to stop next time the counter rolls over rather than stopping immediately.

    10:03 if drive torque is being transmitted into the drum with a threaded bolt wouldnt it just unscrew when the motor is reversed?

    • @olavl8827
      @olavl8827 10 месяцев назад +1

      Looks like it has some kind of loctite on it. In any case the torque isn't going to be much, the drum is free spinning.

    • @travismays457
      @travismays457 10 месяцев назад

      @@olavl8827 The torque seen in the shaft will be a funtion of the acceleration (and deceleration) of the motor and the inertia of the driven load (i.e. the drum, abrasive media and material being tumbled). The twisting forces (torque) fundamentally depend on the agressiveness of the speed ramps that have been programmed into the motor controller. Threadlocking compound would probably work, although I didn't see it being used on the threads.

  • @olavl8827
    @olavl8827 10 месяцев назад

    Good job, nice little machine! Why use a stepper motor though? Unless you had one lying around.

  • @richardmahan4197

    I did not see you install any baffles inside the cylinder to get a tumbling action. How did you achieve the tumbling?

    • @andyboys5669
      @andyboys5669 10 месяцев назад

      Tumbling can be set with speed, doesn't really need baffles. Set the speed correct and the material will climb the wall and then drop, to slow and it won't climb, to fast and it won't drop.

    • @ZeroaxeSA
      @ZeroaxeSA 9 месяцев назад

      I agree with you. I think by now he realized that it was an oversight. I don't believe that speed will sort out the 'drop' motion. The inside is way too smoothe

      @@capatainnemoAttaching the shaft for the bearing to the tumbler body could be a little tricky without a welder, but you could probably still whip something up with a few pipe nipples and adapters. So i don't really get the complaint from op, everything cutting/grinding related can be done with an angle grinder. So with some thinking it should feasible to build this without any power tools besides an angle grinder and a drill
