- After our night sailing passage across the English Channel from England to France arriving in the French city of Brest we explore the area while waiting for the weather to cross the mighty Bay of Biscay.
We take a walk in the city and take a peak at the naval base but then are totally blown away by some of the hidden history and forbidden fortresses from Napoleonic times and WW2 on the Roscanvel Peninsula. We hike to a spectacular rocky island fortress at the foot of a cliff called the Îlot des Capucins built initially in 1848 and then use our drone to find a path through dense undergrowth to find a forbidden WW2 fortress!

Thank Cousin 😊 It was indeed a bit creepy, especially being the only people there! I’ve done quite a bit of Googling and, sadly, can’t find out whether it was bomb damage or not but I’m increasingly convinced that it was. Will let you know if I ever find the answer 😊👍🏻
@@FollowIntrepidBear Keep up the blogging... Only other comment I'd make is that you don't mention dates on your videos... That would be nice to see...as I know this video must have been shot many months ago and understand that you've done quite a bit since then.
I do put the date on all of them but, as you’re not the first to mention it, I’m obviously not making it clear enough. It’s on screen in this video at the 48 second mark “Dateline: Early August 2021” I’ll try and make the dates a bit more prominent but they are there. Cheers 👍🏻😊
Fascinating visit. Imagination stirred. That hole in the barracks roof definitely looks like a bomb entry and the room underneath like outward explosion damage. Terrific wander, even if it was actually verboten. Keep up the videos. Did you discover just what Kate was on? Fair winds and following tides, mates.

I've enjoyed your videos up to now as you've come across as 'ordinary yotties' that cruisers like me can easily identify with. Between the extreme sailing of Erik Aanderaa's 'No Bullshit Just Sailing' and the (too) highly polished and professional 'Sailing Fair Isle' that now just seems like another TV travel show there's a niche for folks like yourselves. I'm afraid this episode, in my opinion at least, let you down. The clowning around at the start was annoying, something best kept to vids meant for friends and family only. The tour around the fort was interesting at first but went on way too long and quickly became boring. Overall it was a ramble on par with the friend who insists on showing you his holiday snaps after dinner - you guys can do much better.
Your videos of the trips to the Scillies had a purpose and a structure and were interesting even to those very familiar with the area; you were relating the place you visited to your boat and yourselves. Perhaps include more content showing how you're sailing. Its always interesting to see the techniques of others from anchoring to reefing and to how you manage domestic routines, all things that the average or maybe 'wanabee' cruiser can relate to as that was what made you a tad different from the plethora of other RUclipsrs. Of course its interesting to see an exploration of the areas you visit but these need to be better edited and should support whatever theme you choose for your vids with quality over quantity preferred. Your sailing so far and your future intentions deserves respect - but I do feel that you must decide what type of vids you want to produce and then develop that niche; travel shows are 10 a penny, I'm afraid.
Even if unwelcome, I hope the above generates 'food for thought' and I wish you all the very best for your future cruising!
Hi Iain, don't apologise at all. We do indeed invite all feedback, positive or negative, that is delivered in a considered and reasonable manner such as yours is. Obviously its great to get the positive comments but also very interested, and indeed learn more, hearing about what people think we are not doing as well as we could. I guess we are still finding our niche and feedback such as yours helps guide that. We started the channel primarily as a record for ourselves and family but would like it to be self financing at some point as the camera and computer gear does not come cheap. I won't try to over justify the exploration of places that we go only to note that some, like Uma, have a balance between sailing and exploring. We will probably continue to do some of that both for our own records and for some of our followers who aren't sailors and like to see such exploration but I appreciate your opinion that we perhaps got it wrong on this occasion. I hear what you say about clowning around and take it on board but equally wish to balance that against a human face from time to time. I appreciate your view that we may have got that balance wrong this time.
Our next episode is very much back at sea as we cross Biscay so hopefully we can redeem ourselves a little.
I really do appreciate your feedback. I can't promise to address everything that you raise as different people like different things and one thing I've learnt in life is ya can't please all the people all the time! but I very much take it all on board and balance it with my own views to try and strike the best course that I can. I definitely take on board your comment about deciding who or what we want to be as we are still evolving. There are lots of changes we want to make for future videos, both technically and content wise but we are working a few months behind so can't start to implement those things or make the technical improvements that we want to until the beginning of next season. One thing that people have repeatedly commented on is that they do enjoy the bits when I explain the what and why of how we're are sailing. I probably haven't filmed enough of that for the remainder of this season but it is very much something that I will attempt to highlight more in the 2022 season. Anyway I am going on a bit now. Thank you for taking the time to provide such a detailed write up of your thoughts. It really is appreciated. Cheers for now, Iain... (and congrats on having your Iain spelt properly!)
@@FollowIntrepidBear Thanks for taking my comments as they were intended; of course you'll 'chart your own way' as time goes on.
One further thought, if I may.....: Possibly like you guys, I was the experienced sailor with my wife being new to it all. We've both had to learn to adapt; she to life onboard and me in letting her actually DO things, especially foredeck and work aloft in conditions where you really need to take special care. She told me (in no uncertain terms!) that she was lighter, more agile and just as capable. Although she's ace in the galley and has taken over all the domestic management she still insists on doing her share of the sailing as well. I'd be very surprised if this situation wasn't instantly recognisable to many cruisers and to hear how you both manage the plethora of challenges you face as as a couple and as a crew would be interesting and certainly different. Perhaps a good scene might be you both walking and talking about the issues - while showing the backdrop of some of the lovely places you visit...! We started doing a small blog ourselves but 'life' and/or sheer laziness got in the way so I do appreciate the thought and hard work that you're having to put in to this; I hope you do keep pluggin' away.
BTW - there's only one proper way to spell our shared name; I can only feel sorrow for those who have been short-changed by one letter.

I enjoy making the videos ( not to mention already invested quite heavily in camera's and computer!) and it will be a fabulous record to look back on one day. There will certainly be a lot more Kate next season and your suggestion of how we divvy up the various tasks might be an interesting angle. Cheers
