- In this video we finally begin sailing our own boat across The Bay of Biscay! With its fearsome reputation for rough weather we had spent months wondering when was the best time to cross the Bay of Biscay and watching the weather waiting for a weather window to cross Biscay to Spain.
Join us here in early August as we finally sail across the Bay of Biscay on a 48 hour passage where we see shooting stars in a meteor shower, bioluminescence, as well as a lot of Spanish fishing vessels along the edge of the continental shelf. We have to motor some of the way but enjoy some good sailing and are even able to shower and eat at the table.
We have some emotional moments during our sail across Biscay when we realise how small we feel in the vastness of the open sea and consider how near yet far we feel from loved ones under the shared expanse of the night sky.

Omgoodness, this episode bought back so many memories. Someone asked us "was Biscay a lion or lamb for you?", for us it was lamb. We motored all the way but saw everything you did. The dolphins darting around in the bioluminesance was so magical for us.
I remember laying back and staring at the night stars and was so amazed I left long messages on WhatsApp for 2 of our grandkiddies, knowing they wouldn't get them until we had signal again, but I just needed to share the awesomeness of it.

That’s fantastic….great to hear your experience was like ours. So hard to explain to anyone who hasn’t done it….very special when its favourable conditions and we were very lucky to be going through the meteor shower 😊😊

Any commercial boat, you have to expect them not to see you. I used to investigate such things, and it is woefully regular with collisions you never, ever hear about. The watch are often on their phones or nodding when they should not be ! A brittany ferry aimed for me the other week when I was sailing, just for fun. Sods. I see you were olympics 2012, so was I - with a PSU to play with......I have shared your adventures with my what app sailing group, so hopefully you will get some more subscribers from that . Keep it coming folks !
Hi, thank you and yes I’m with you on the assume not seen. I used to be marine unit so investigated similar from time to time. Gotta say this particular fishing boat almost felt as if he turned towards us. I did wonder if it was anti Brit sentiment as I daresay he was receiving AIS so would have known. Anyway can’t be sure but indeed you’re right. Yes I was at Portland for Olympics 2012. I was one of two marine unit Sgts which was a lot of fun! I’d left the marine unit by then but was drafted back for 2012 which was awesome. Thanks for sharing our channel. Getting closer to the 1000 subscribers to get a few pennies. Don’t need to make a living but be nice to get a few pennies for camera gear upgrades and replacements. Only a matter of time til a drone goes in the drink! Cheers for now 😊⛵️
Looks like the stuff of dreams!, what I day dream of at work as retirement is on the horizon :) I’m sure you have already thought of it but a backstay mounted go pro would leave you free to berth but capture the arrival. Fair winds Cheers DB
Thank you and yes I know that feeling of looking forward and dreaming. That was us up until a year or so ago. It’ll come round before you know it! The GoPro on the back stay, or clipped to the solar panels is definitely the way forward. I guess I didn’t do it before more through a bit of laziness and not wanting to leave it running for a long time before docking but it’s only one more thing to do as we enter so we’ll be on it this coming season for sure. There are several thing I have to correct for future filming and it’s a little frustrating that I have to wait maybe 4-5 more episodes on the footage we already have before we can start addressing them. Will also try not to run quite so far behind this season. Always need a bit of a buffer for times we can’t edit but not 3 months! Cheers for your comment 😊⛵️
God, you make me jealous. Sailing/motoring along with the universe to keep you company. Oh, how I wish! I crossed Biscay in a dirty great car ferry to Santander and it was rough. Storm conditions as soon as we turned the corner. The memsahib brought her breakfast up, faster than it went down, so I had extra bacon. Having rescinded my original plan in favour of a natural conclusion around maybe June or possibly earlier, I’ll be following you and Kate (looking gorgeous, btw) for a while yet. Fair winds and a following sea!

We got them from Marinesuperstore online in the U.K. Trem recliner cushion. Ours are not as thick as some we’ve seen others with but are fine on our cockpit cushions. The original american brand are called “Sportaseat” but we couldn’t find those in the U.K. Hope that helps? Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching 😊⛵️
