    In this episode we sail across the notorious Bay of Biscay, our first offshore passage and our biggest crossing so far. Feared by many the Bay of Biscay is known for its rough seas and violent storms as one of the stormiest seas in the world. Regardless of the bad reputation, with modern weather forecasting it is easy to time it right and find a good weather window.
    We sailed a total of 350 nautical miles and it took us 53 hours altogether from Camaret in France to A Coruna in Spain. The weather for our crossing started off a lot lighter than forecasted with an average of 5 knots and towards the end it turned out to be a lot stronger than forecasted with an average of 30 knots. Overall we couldn't have been happier with our crossing, despite the lack of sleep towards the end in the strong winds.
    We also get to properly test out our new solar and wind power setup to see if it was sufficient to keep the batteries topped up and also run the fridge, autopilot and all the other navigation eqipment. All the necessities we need on a longer ocean passage, specially with the Atlantic crossing coming up.
    A couple from Australia and Norway who set sails from Norway on a Beneteau Oceanis 40 in late 2018 to explore the world by sailboat. (Yup, another sailing couple doing the standard route and documenting it on film.)

    Great channel! We have just bought an Oceanis 46 that has a removable inner stay but no running backs. As we will be two up we will be using the staysail a lot rather than half furling the big genoa. I am in two minds about installing running backstays as the rig on these cruising boats is quite solid anyway. What made you decide to install them on yours?

    • @SailingBeaver
      @SailingBeaver  3 года назад +3

      Cheers Peter,
      The 46 is a great boat I really like them. The staysail definitely calms the boat down a lot without having to reduce the Genoa size. I decided to install running backs as we rigged the inner forestay permanent and parallel instead of close to the main forestay attachment. Also these rigs are known to pump. We used dyneema removable runners and if we need we can remove, but we are really happy with the added security.

    I didn't see it....but did you all put a reef in? Always a good strategy in weather.

    • @SailingBeaver

      We were on 2nd reefed mainsail the whole way mate. It fits under our running backs and we have plenty of options with the two headsails for easy reefing.

    SAFETY Thought:
    Life Jacket/PFD Harness ON and CLIPPED IN while:
    1. Sailing at night, one crew member asleep or below
    2. Sailing during the day, alone in cockpit or going forward.
    Stay safe.

    • @SailingBeaver
      @SailingBeaver  4 года назад +2

      Thank you Romeo for your kind concern. At night we do wear life jackets and behind the wheels always clipped in. If the weather is questionable or there is need to leave the cockpit we also don the PFD’s.
      Cheers

      Hey Andres,
      I’m very happy with the silentwind pro, was easy to install even quieter then expected and really helps to provide power when at anchor at night. I definitely have not been disappointed and good to monitor on my phone on Bluetooth in the app. It really goes well with the scanstrut mount pole too!

    Great show. Out of interests why are you often helming form the leeward side of the boat and not the windward?

    • @SailingBeaver
      @SailingBeaver  3 года назад +1

      Cheers mate. We switch around a lot but in flat water it’s nice up on the windward side with good view ahead but when it’s abit bumpy and we switch to the Jib I have a better view of the sail and the winch is at hands reach. After any length of time up on the windward side with a lot of heel it’s hard work to hold your footing.

      @@SailingBeaver Thanks for the reply, I really envy the weather you had. I crossed the other way about the same time in weather I wasn't completely happy with but my Schengen time was running out. I initially set out from A Coruna but weather turned sour and I ran before it to Gijon instead. A few days later I set out again and all was fine until around Brest when I had 8 metre seas and 35+ knots to deal with - suffered 2 broken in portlights entering night time (Brest, a port I've not entered and with strong westerlies and swell, was not a good prospect) so I continued on but diverted to Guernsey (been there before) instead of Plymouth. Such is the life of the solo sailor.
      If I read things correctly - you are now at Martinique? Very interested in what's going on around there and Panama because I'm looking at sailing home to Australia that way instead of having to deal with the South Africa route - single-handed, most likely.

    • @SailingBeaver
      @SailingBeaver  4 года назад

      No worries. Yeah I think the weather is much easier doing downhill in Biscay. That sounds like quite the different ethnicities experience you had. Very very rough. Those Schengen days am have caught me a few times. Yes Martinique and Antilles until November then moving on. Hopefully catch up with ya along the way. 🤙
