As always, thanks for watching! x
I really admire your seamanship, Hazel. Crossing Biscay single-handed is no mean feat. Congratualations! And I think the best pep-talks are the ones that we give ourselves. Best wishes to you and your family. - Chris
Thank you Chris! Wishing you all the best for the holidays too!
Hi. Great video and well done. I am sure your video will offer great encouragement to those who have been thinking of sailing a far but have not yet done so
Some advice would be to wear some gloves to keep your lady hands soft. The ropes tend to dry you skin out if your pulling on the ropes as much as you have been
Nice sailing..As a solo sailor, never be afraid to add too many reefs in the sails... Be careful with the loose lines in the cockpit, specially sailing solo, you might look into making dedicated storage bags for the cockpit..
Merry Christmas and for sure a prosperous 2024 with a lot of adventurous sailing..
I completely agree, reefs can also be put in in favour of comfort instead of speed! At least I do :)
In terms of the VHF, in our experience general broadcasts are done in local language and English. Emergency calls are almost always in English. International radio language for both ships and aeroplanes is English. 🎉
That is good, I was kind of thinking it would be so but all I’d been hearing for the past few days was French 😄
English is standard, except when in France, the French somehow assume everyone in the world should speak their language...
I was kind of thinking everything should be in English since it's the international language of the sea, but haven't spent much time outside of places where English isn't the primary language to begin with.
Just found your channel, great job! Interesting boat, great to see something a bit different. I look forward to following your journey
You're seriously such a rockstar, I think Ive said it before but I will say it again! Doing all of this by yourself! Absolute legend.
Aww thank you 🥹🥹🥰
Well done. But please get yourself a better autopilot. The wheel mounted drive you have now is fine for occasional trips but is not up to intensive use. Since an autopilot is really essential for solo sailing you need an AP with an under deck drive, one you can rely on in any circumstances. The current AP is a nice backup, which you need anyway.
Hoi Hazel
Goede wind zeilboot_Ingeling
I just discovered your channel with this video. I'll have to watch more. I'm intrigued by your vessel with its junk rig, yes? I dunno, thats what it looks like with those battens. I guess I'll find out when I go watch your earlier vids. Good luck!
Yes that’s right 😎
Well done.
Well done Hazel! Great bit of sailing. The camera work and the mix were pretty good too.
Love your sailing, love your enthusiasm, love your episodes 👍
Thank you ☺️
Love those Freedom ketch rigged boats with the twin carbon fibre masts, unstayed as they're so strong. What made you put a pair of Junk sails on? Can you sail close to the wind? I know the original sails were a very good set up, quite fast. Good luck and fair winds on your travels.
The previous owners actually converted her to a junk rigged boat.
I can sail quite close to the wind, probably not as close as a Bermuda rig, but closer than a junk rig with only one sail :)
Great vlog 👍. Always look forward to your next episode. I find the technical details very interesting. Thank you for sharing your adventure.
Thank you :)
I don't know! You and your pops buddy boating across and then buddy boating throughout the Caribbean! Sounds like something to plan!
Brave you Hazel . Enjoyed your video. prep talk and all .
Haha thank you 😄
Always great news when you upload another video dear Hazel! Another marvellous video, this time braving that dreaded troll's moat blocking the UK's access to the Med and the southern wonders. I have nightmares about trying to get past that place to reach the sunshine, and hoping you can help to dispel them in these videos. The single-handed bit is especially amazing because at some point you need to sleep. Am also fascinated by the VHF bit as I doubt that unless you're fluent in a lingo you could fathom out what they're saying through a radio speaker and a dodgy signal. Will be watching and learning for when I retire to sea (and learn to sail!) next year. Anyway, as always thoroughly enjoying your wonderful videos. Stay safe dear Hazel!
Thanks :) and yes the whole sleeping situation was quite daunting for me, especially if it’s a bit rough and you’re alone I guess you just have to power through. That’s not something I look forward to experiencing 😄
Fair play to you girl.! Always good to give yourself pep talks 👍👍⛵️⛵️

Haha 💪😎
"Donde esta le wind" I love you 😄❤
Love you too ❤️😄
great, well done! Interesting sail config you have there. how did you get to have these unusual sails set on your boat?
Just came across your channel and hats off to you, thoroughly enjoyed it! In answer to your VHF question, the international maritime authority language is English so if you need to communicate, they are duty bound to reply to you in English. So if in doubt just speak slow but firm and they will adjust to you. I only really encounter foreign conversations exactly where you are in French waters. Keep up the great work, you’ve earned a subscriber.
Thank you 😊 ok that’s good!!! 😅
Go get'm tiger! Goodonyas!
What a nice way to spend my birthday evening. Thank you Hazel for tonight's video. Well done crossing the Bay. Do you have plans made yet for projects after the start of the new year? Best wishes to you and the family for a very prosperous and adventurous year ahead.
Thank you and happy birthday!
I have a couple of projects I want to get to in the new year, a complete re-wiring of the boat electrics is high on the list!
I frequently see your name come up in the closing titles of sailing videos Matt. You're a great proponent of the pastime, and such a welcome help to so many sailors.
Hazel,
Single handed...please consider tying off to some point ON the boat.
Sail on...
Small boats like yours go round the world?😊
I’m hoping so 😊
Was you boat originally the cat ketch? Nice rig and easy to handle. Good crossing
Yes it was, well spotted 😄 the previous owners converted her to a junk rig
Do you think you and your pops will Cruise the Caribbean together on separate boats? Seems like a grand adventure!
One day maybe, that would be a grand adventure! But I won’t set my sights too high just yet 😄
Very brave Hazel, well done. A matter of interest what is your sailing background? How long have you been sailing?
Thank you :)
I started Opti sailing when I was young, and I did some RYA courses up to the Coastal Skipper in recent years.
So I’ve probably been sailing since I was 9 or so, though not continuously :)
@@SailingAlanouwoly Thank you. I really admire your courage and attitude. :)
That’s very kind, thank you!
Hi Hazel. What marina did you leave from? Where abouts?
Hi, I left from the marina on Isle D’Yeu which is roughly between Nantes an La Rochelle
You need a friend at sea.
Way more fun.
Keep all transmissions in English. Its an international comms language.
