I was impressed how close to a bullet hole I got with my Bear Revival compound shooting fingers. I followed the steps from video 1 and had a nasty tear. My rest was too close to the riser and spine way too weak. After several tweaks to the rest and arrows, I got a bare shaft through paper within an 1/8th of an inch from bullet hole. That's by far the cleanest I've ever had. Thanks for the advice!
Might I add, regarding facial pressure and string manipulation, there is even more peep movement/string movement when at full draw as there is less pressure on the string. Or it's not as tight if that makes sense. Good stuff as always!
In the summer I started shooting again and I have a THICK beard, which I didn't have years ago when I stopped, and I was shooting WAY left. Sadly it took me weeks to figure out what was going on. I was so pumped when I figured it out and now I have to adjust my anchor point and I was back in the game shooting 1 inch groups.
You make use of an excellent method of problem solving - "chiseling away". Taking the potential issues of bow setup in bite-sized portions is a good way to avoid becoming overwhelmed. Additionally, you offer a unique suggestion when proposing that a person put an aiming point on their paper-tuning target. Often, aiming at a specific spot causes the shooter to muscle the bow to that spot, which imparts torque to the bow similar to what occurs during normal shooting. No aiming point, no aiming torque and an artificially clean tear. You are the first person I know to suggest an aiming point. Smart.
Note, the first tips only work for dual cam bow. A single cam is different and not always perfect level. The d-loop is usually a 1/4” high of center. There are a few people that still have the older stuff. I still have my old single cam bow.
We need to get you on to talk about the next step beyond “how to nock suck”!! I want to help get people to a dead animal at 40. After that you can help us all get to a dead golf tee at 50!

Just bought the new nexus 2. I shot a z7extreme up till this year. Not a latest and greatest guy. I hunted all season with a torn rotator cuff. Was not my draw arm so I got through it. Shot V3 and a VXR, but the nexus was the most forgiving to me. Shot both at 60 and 70 lbs and the nexus just felt right. I was looking for more let off to help me be stable at full draw more. I get this shoulder fixed at the end of the month, by then the nexus will be in and when I heal I can to shoot her in to hunt . Brandon have you ever done tie in nocking points in addition to D-loop? Saw this in a John Dudley video, and I did incorporate them into my bow the last two years. Just made me feel I was always nocking in the same point more efficiently.
Mate I shoot a 2013/14 'Prime one' and whether anyone likes it or not the more variables there are the harder the equation is and if I was a smarter man I would do the math and do my best to make the equations idiot proof. I used a cherry picker with a 2” strap around the legs and over the bow grip, and then a big S hook on the D loop and the picker arm, makes for a really solid draw mechanism to check timing.
I shoot prime and it is one of the easiest bows to tune, once it’s set it’s bullet proof. Not sure what you are talking about with it being complicated, pretty easy if you know what you are doing. If you don’t it’s not the bows fault, take it to a professional. As far as dloop use bcy#23 thousands of shots before you need replace. Small material and more forgiving. The average joe will only need to replace when string n cables are replaced.
How do you adjust the cams? Shims. How many strings does it have compared to the rest of the bows? More. I agree with you about the loop material. Nothing wrong with A bow requiring specialty tools to work on it, just not as easy to mess with at home as the bowtech or elite if you don’t have the press.

Been loving your content for a while now. Just a newbie in archery. Looking to buy my first and you had some great info on 2020 bows... but lagavulin tastes like formaldehyde... at least the 8 year..
One thing I noticed about myself and influencing my shot... was my release. I love my thumb release but getting a consistent anchor point was my issue...I only hunt with my index release and practice with both releases.
@@brandonmcdonald6121 got myself sorted again. Here’s my issue: Shooting PSE Drive 3B; if I set the arrow to go straight through the B-Hole, (putting bow in press leveling string, snapping on arrow, let it hang freely) it calls for a nocking point a full 1” higher than the dead center of string. Also confirmed with Bow Square.... (Checked timing on draw board- Perfect). So I went with it (the high nock point). Tied in a new nock set and D-loop. Checked my 11/16” center shot. Checked to see if rest was raising appropriately (it wasn’t), fixed all that. Everything looks good. Then I shot through paper. 3/4” high tear. Perfectly straight though. So, that’s where I am! Where’s chapter 3? 😀😀. Thanks for this series.
Love the humor in this one! Think at the end of these you should do some kind of how not to suck at archery fun shoot? Don’t know how much help this newbie can offer but I’m in if you want to try and put something together.
Hi Brandon! We’ve just introduced my dad to RUclips, and he loves your show! We’ve gotten to where we have to limit his time, because his infatuation with you irks my mom :) Anyway, he was wondering which is “better”-the Mathews V3 27” 65 lbs at 85% let off, or 60 lbs at 80% let off? Thank you for your videos they keep my dad entertained for hours lol!
Interesting question. For hunting and target both the 80% is better because the arrow is getting off the string quicker. 85 feels better on long holds though so if he has strength issues that might be the way to go. Accuracy struggled a bit more I’d say. My traverse is 85 let off
Thought the last part of this video was interesting. When I was having my new bow setup. The bow tech shot throw paper and shooting bullet holes, then they had me shoot through paper I was a slight tail right tear. So now I will have to figure that out. Just shows how different people hold and shoot.
never shot through paper never will , sorry as long as they go generaly where im pointing im a happy camper, cheers from oz oh i shoot mostly Trad these days and i dont hunt lol
Ok so last year I figured out (by just about pulling all my hair out 😂) that by adding just a little bit of index finger pressure it cleaned up my bare shaft tune incredibly but every says that is wrong way to do it. But if it works why not
Here's a list of 34" bows. I suspect one of these might be the 34" that Brandon says is his 2021 bow. PSE EVO EVL, Elite Remedy, Hoyt RX-5 Ultra, Prime Nexus 4, Matthew TRX 34 My guess: Remedy. Anyone else have a guess?
I’m going to say he picks Mathews, but am hoping he shoots a Prime or PSE. Pretty sure it it won’t be Prime, I have a prime black 5 and would love to see time tune one, they’re pretty finicky, as he mentioned. I had a PSE before that, easiest tune I’ve ever done.
Brandon love the channel, but you're insane for 1) recommending people check their timing on anything not a draw board, and 2) asking their wife to help! I can see that now...Is it touching? "Is what touching?", how far is the stop? "How far is what? "What the hell am I looking at anyway?", "why is your damn bow tied to my deck?". 😆... Anyway I'll take 10% of divorce lawyer fees for anyone that listens... Don't talk smack about Prime. My Black 5 will kick your Traverse's ass! Sorry had to do it too funny. But seriously you sure play with the Traverse more than the VXR. Its still a better bow, and better than any of the new offerings this year. Keep up the great vids man.
I hope you don't tell people to not use a peep sight! I had someone call me just now and tell me the ranch queery is telling people to not use a peep. Thought I would check on this since I heard you ordered some kind of ranch queery test kit. I don't want you coming out of the closet since you've been leaning that way, heavy arrows, fixed blade broadheads and all!
Watch all your videos. Thank you for putting out some great info. Question about checking arrow level. Don't you have to push the quad rest so it's all the way up? Doesn't it raise up farther when you draw?
It does a little bit but not enough to mess up your center shot ,However the lines shall be aligned or the QAD rest fork be in complete 90 degree's in order to shot properly otherwise it will shot like complete garbage.
@@brandonmcdonald6121 my bow is shooting the best it's shot currently I'm to scurred too tinker to much lol Well see how it shoots my broadheads once the weather clears up for more then 5 minutes. Might end up tinkering anyway!
Embrace the tinkering until you get to a point where you would be confident enough to make changes the week before hunting starts. Then if something happens during the season, you'll have the knowledge and confidence to fix it and fix it fast.
Are you able to do a video on the silver back or tension style releases. I feel like I get a lot more weird arrow flight from my silverback and It must be a combination of facial pressure/the way I’m pulling through my shot. I am new to the silver bag and I’m still trying to learn it this year
I will get to releases and tension will be on there. One issue I’ve noticed is dloop length. If your loop is super short it can create issues with lots more variation between releases. Keep shooting it and just shoot a paper plate at 20 yards. Worry about the action and not the results for a few weeks. Pull that back elbow to the wall behind you. Put your brain in your release arm, bot on the target
Good content, but for Pete’s sake do not use anything other than a draw board on a short axle to axle bow. Speaking from experience any variance and that string is coming off!
I haven’t shot through paper yet. Still need to make the stand from the cardboard box my sticks came in. Like the technique with the door way to see the arrow are leveled. Is that a way to see if sight is roughly leveled?
So 44 years old here...I bought an old matthews bow from my boss (who’s an avid hunter) I’m wanting to get into archery I live in Lebanon, TN (east of nashville) where can I go to get this bow setup and started into archery and bow hunting?
@@brandonmcdonald6121 That method of checking cam timing is just plain too risky for what you gain from it. More severe cam timing issues can be pretty easily detected by the feel of the cam hitting the back wall of the draw cycle, or just having someone watch while your draw while shooting. Smaller timing issues will either show up via persistent vertical tears while tuning, or by putting the bow on a proper draw board where you can get a good look at what happens during the last bit of draw. The feeling of walking into the archery shop to have your cam timing checked out is a heck of a lot better than walking in with a tangle of strings, cables, and broken parts.
so I asked this stupid question on another video but speaking of arrow travel... if you go from a QAD rest to a hamskea , how much will that effect your sight??
alright well it's off so I've got to figure out what the problem is. first time using a ham and first time setting a rest. would be great if I had a vise but don't so ill try an rig something up. thanks for the response 👍

When I do my part my bow definitely can shoot better than I can
100% true
Lmao brother you are awesome keep it coming and if you get any messages with pictures of bows through a wall window or door you have to share with us
For sure I’ll post them!
Love the humor in this one! Think at the end of these you should do some kind of how not to suck at archery fun shoot? Don’t know how much help this newbie can offer but I’m in if you want to try and put something together.
I’d love to do a 3d shoot locally. Think it would be super fun
Good stuff
Thanks for watching
Honey put the dog outside I'm going to practice with my bow
What are your favorite string
I’m a fan of these gas strings I put on a while ago
@@brandonmcdonald6121 perfect those are the one I've had in mind
Frantically looks for part one.
My traverse is 85 let off
@@brandonmcdonald6121 Thank you for your response, your advice was appreciated!
Loving the videos, definitely need to buy a draw board or build your own. Can be made for cheap and will be easier to check cam timing
Woodford Reserve highly recommended
Love it. Just don’t have any right now
Thought the last part of this video was interesting. When I was having my new bow setup. The bow tech shot throw paper and shooting bullet holes, then they had me shoot through paper I was a slight tail right tear. So now I will have to figure that out. Just shows how different people hold and shoot.
We all influence that shot for sure
Just awesome! Wife asks me “what’s the shit eating grin for?” , looks at the phone “oh Brandon again” LOL
What jacket are you wearing in this? Looking for a hybrid puffy/soft shell. Sitka?
Didn't cheat, love these videos.
You forgot to mention during the banister cam timing segment that this video is for entertainment purposes only and not an instructional video
I think I said something close to that like 10 times!
All I heard in my head after the cam timing intro was "time to some sketchy sh#t, do, da.."
Hahaha. Yes, that part is built for TikTok
I know I am late to the game here… Average Jack Archery has a video on a good DIY draw board…. Made one for like $35.
Brandon
As we go through this process will you tune the bow to broad heads as you go?
Yep
Would you ever go into trad archery? I just picked it up a couple weeks ago, have already shot it more then my vxr, it’s addicting
I imagine I’ll try it at some point but the truth is I’m so into compound right now.
never shot through paper never will , sorry as long as they go generaly where im pointing im a happy camper, cheers from oz oh i shoot mostly Trad these days and i dont hunt lol
Try it just once and see how your flight is. Just for fun
Lagavulin for the win! I see it is the 8. Have you had the 16 or the Ron Swanson 11? Both are amazing! Great video too.
8s my least favorite but I can’t find either of the others
Awesome video, farting in bed and pulling covers over is the new 2021 covid test.... 👊😜🤣 Anywho great video.
Haha
I've been waiting..... Let us have it!
Ok so last year I figured out (by just about pulling all my hair out 😂) that by adding just a little bit of index finger pressure it cleaned up my bare shaft tune incredibly but every says that is wrong way to do it. But if it works why not
I tend to torque to the left so by adding the index pressure I’m actually relieving the pressure
Hey Brandon, what arrows are you holding in the video cover photo?
Those are arwd from Australia. Testing now with a giveaway to come shortly
Here's a list of 34" bows. I suspect one of these might be the 34" that Brandon says is his 2021 bow.
PSE EVO EVL, Elite Remedy, Hoyt RX-5 Ultra, Prime Nexus 4, Matthew TRX 34
My guess: Remedy.
Give me them all!!!!
I tried to check my timing with my foot on the riser, it was terrifying.
Done that too... none of these are a great idea! Haha
Not me , I didn’t cheat,,, still can’t draw my bow lol 😂 😂😂 🤦♂️🥲😢🤬😤
Heal up (assuming) I shattered my collar bone a few years ago. Took a while but I’m 100% again
@@brandonmcdonald6121 thanks
Working on it 😁👍
Oh you made me laugh, good thing you didn't punch that trigger when your tongue was stuck out there
Thumb way behind the trigger to make sure!
Tell me the tongue thing was after a couple of whiskies
Only after 1!
Is it bad that I’m watching your videos regardless of the title just to get bourbon and scotch recommendations?!?
I am also wanting a bourbon, scotch video 👍
I’ve also been adding to my collection based on the vids lol
Haha! Guess I need to keep trying New stuff!
U can have your wife snap a pic of your cams that way u eliminate any arguments lol
Lagavulin ftw, if you live in the Chicago area I will time your bow for you free of charge please don’t rocket your bow into a fence 😂
Hopefully I’m sending you some business!
I’m just a dude with a bow press willing to help
Watch all your videos. Thank you for putting out some great info. Question about checking arrow level. Don't you have to push the quad rest so it's all the way up? Doesn't it raise up farther when you draw?
It does a little bit but not enough to mess up your center shot ,However the lines shall be aligned or the QAD rest fork be in complete 90 degree's in order to shot properly otherwise it will shot like complete garbage.
Damn, I'm watching like a frickin soap opera here! Only no sex-yet!
Probably no sex... I think RUclips might ban me
Probably is not definitely 👀
One more little thing, I have a reasonably big beard. I set the top of the vane 15/8 inch from the bottom of the nock, that clears the beard. Maybe.
I had already been paper tuning before your last video. Does that make me a cheater? Waiting for the next step before I move on though!
Keep tinkering. You can always put it back!
@@brandonmcdonald6121 my bow is shooting the best it's shot currently I'm to scurred too tinker to much lol
Well see how it shoots my broadheads once the weather clears up for more then 5 minutes.
Like i said, I dont recommend it but it’s possible!
I haven’t shot through paper yet. Still need to make the stand from the cardboard box my sticks came in. Like the technique with the door way to see the arrow are leveled. Is that a way to see if sight is roughly leveled?
Same exact thing as long as your jam is level
So 44 years old here...I bought an old matthews bow from my boss (who’s an avid hunter) I’m wanting to get into archery I live in Lebanon, TN (east of nashville) where can I go to get this bow setup and started into archery and bow hunting?
Archery den in Franklin is your best bet. They’re a Mathews dealer and Matt is a great tech
@@brandonmcdonald6121 thanks Brandon...enjoy your videos!
Just wondering how gas pressure affects nock travel, their must be a correlation?
I’m sure the release could effect the release
@@brandonmcdonald6121 The timing of the gas pressure may also have an affect on cam timing.
I don’t think those are your hunting clothes, they’re your everyday clothes so smoking is ok
I always wash a few times before the season anyway
I cheated. I'm buying a crossbow.
Yeah..... .... this ain't a good'urn. Dont even know where to start.
Just start. Gimme what you got.
Bareshaft
Soon
so I asked this stupid question on another video but speaking of arrow travel... if you go from a QAD rest to a hamskea , how much will that effect your sight??
If you set them up the same probably not at all.
If your qad was 100% and the ham is 100% it should be the same.
Not a stupid question.
alright well it's off so I've got to figure out what the problem is. first time using a ham and first time setting a rest. would be great if I had a vise but don't so ill try an rig something up. thanks for the response 👍
@Tagge Viter thanks and it's not going well haha might have to take it to my local shop when I get the time
