Directed by: Edward Hall
Starring: Dan Stevens, Isla Fisher, Judi Dench & Leslie Mann
Best-selling crime novelist Charles (Dan Stevens) suffers from terrible writer’s block and is struggling to finish his first screenplay. His picture-perfect new wife Ruth (Isla Fisher) is doing her best to keep him focused so they can fulfill her dream of leaving London for Hollywood. Charles’ quest for inspiration leads him to invite the eccentric mystic Madame Acarti (Judi Dench) to perform a séance in his home. He gets more than he bargained for when Madame Acarti inadvertently summons the spirit of his first wife: the brilliant and fiery Elvira (Leslie Mann). Ready to pick up her life right where she left off, Elvira is shocked to discover the prim and proper Ruth is now married to her husband and running her household. Charles finds himself stuck between his two wives and their increasingly over-the-top attempts to outdo one another in this lethally hilarious comedy.

While the movie is getting generally poor reviews, I will watch Dan Stevens in anything, he is just so good.
I enjoyed it ..Judy dench and leslie mann were great
The main problem with remakes is that people will hate it no matter what, they will never get a fair shot even if they are entertaining
@@xuxon24 Agree completely.
I listened to his Frankenstein audible narration and he was excellent.
@@carlosolavarria6251 Dan Stevens is the BEST narrator of books today. There isn't anything he can't do.
Never mind the poor critics review ..this was a real british comedy , the acting the music the locations the directing ..A really 30s enjoyment treat !
1945
We did this play when I was in high school and I got to play Madame Arcati 🖤
Amazing movie! surprised this even got made... no super hero in sight.. I applaud the risk.
Always another trash boring batman or spiderman movie just about every year.. or some other super hero movie... getting films like this are a rare treat now these days.. its sad...
So glad I watched this... I thought dune would be the only movie I gave a shit about this year I was wrong.
Dan Steven is an incredible actor, it doesn't matter the character he makes, you'll love it!
How is this Blithe Spirit, Madam Arcarti was never purported to be any kind of fraud previously. I do hate when people do this, if you want to change things, write something original, don't twist things to make it 'fresh', you just ruin things. The 1945 version is perfection, I doubt I'll bother to watch this, it looks like a gaudy, tawdry mess, with horrendous accents & poor casting, Coward will likely be turning in his grave!
Totally agree
why comment then? Just move on with your day and don’t produce extra negative online lol
@@potroastpig I could ask you the same deary ;-).
@@Chillmax touché lol
I loved the Rex Harrison film. I’d be interested to see a remake.
The best that Dan did was leave Downtown Abbey, His Career between indies and blockbusters móvies has been based in quality over all. Great actor.
As I watch this Blithe Spirit trailer, I already find the movie funny. Dan Stevens and company are comic. They can really entertain their audience. It is really hilarious. Wish I have disc of this movie.
I have seen the play with Angela Lansbury and it was fantastic, cannot wait for the movie
My wife and I are seeing this tonight and I will comment later, Ivan H
Can we EVER have a film set in England WITHOUT an American put in for the sake of it?
wait for a couple of years when they make a film about the covid 19 virus it will be an American hero who develops the vaccine and saves the world.
@@philphil6630 ... the character played by Kaley Cuoco. It is known for a long time that the best UN specialist, WHO, must be a 25-year-old, attractive blonde girl.
America had a running business plan set up since the 1850's in engineering once the Industrial revolution took full swing, there will be rich united states citizens transitioning over into England for a summer getaway in their Ruxton, Packard, and Marmon sedans.
We ask the same thing
I was really looking forward to this. Great cast but the writing is terrible and completely different from the play. What a letdown
Oh this does look delightful!! Good to see Dan Stevens getting work after the Epic: Legion series.
Delightful? Watch the original, that matches your description, this does not.
Oh wait to be disappointed
Dear IFC FILMS: Thank you for the subtitles. So few studios bother to sub their trailers for hearing impaired access. We notice, and it matters!
I checked out a few of the reviewers who were unkind to this film. They seemed to love AVENGERS and Blumhouse gore.
Love everyone in the cast and Dan is gorgeous in this role. Looking forward to this.
I need subtitles for British films....just saying lol
@@Scharpy2565 - I just lost my hearing in December. I always switched on subtitles before then. Often it clarified things I might have missed. There are so many British and Australian dialects, it can be really challenging.
Just watched it tonight, it was great!!! Loved Elvira!! AKA Leslie Mann AKA my favorite!!
Wow this was bad gosh just awful really really awful I'm a fan of Noel Coward this was such a travesty goodness me
It does NOT do to take an established play and blindly assume you can write it better than Noel Coward.
I loved the 1940s version I just recently saw and was thrilled to discover there was a remake but this doesn’t look nearly as good
This isn't a remake.
Stick to the play. This lacks the genius that the comedy has. Didn't laugh once during the movie but the play had me rolling out of my seat.
This looks OUTSTANDING! I love the original play and really love the Claudette Colbert/Lauren Bacall version but this looks like an excellent adaptation with a stellar cast! Can’t wait to see it :)
Wow, didn't know about a Colbert/Bacall version, I'll have to look for it!!!! I've only seen the original 1945 movie or on the stage in Chicago. :)
@@judepolude1887 It's outstanding! Noel Coward plays Charles too. It was live on TV, but it was so flawless it seemed pre-taped. Colbert was Ruth and Bacall was Elvira. Mildred Natwick is a funny Arcati!
Fell asleep watching it something about it was just abit bland.
Bruh I loved it but I mean u get what you mean for some parts
Seems needlessly self indulgent.
Oh what a disappointment this is! Just watched the whole thing. Judi Dench (WONDERFUL ACTRESS THOUGH SHE NORMALLY IS!) just speaks in her normal JD voice, meaning she is not a goddamn patch on Margaret Rutherford! She made it boring. Did she think "Oh people will like me, whatever I'm in"? Not so, Dame Judi, I'm afraid. Also disappointing was Dan Stevens (wearing far too may clothes).
Angela Lansbury should have portrayed it like she did on Broadway - Now that was A PERFORMANCE
No one can play Madame Arcati since Angela Lansbury !!! irreplaceable
David Watson -- "Dan Stevens (wearing far too many clothes") -- cracked me up. BUT -- so true!! It was slapstick comedy and Dan does it so well, but even though the writing was just terrible, Dan tried his best to put it over. Can't blame him, that's for sure.
The story and period looks like my cup of tea. I will be renting this video.
This looks brilliant! Bearing in mind I only went to the cinema 6 times in 2020 (due to Covid closing the cinemas down for almost the entire yr) I didn’t see a single trailer for this…. 😳😳
I love Dame Judy in anything!
Please, please, if you have any respect at all for the work of Noel Coward, don't watch this travesty of an over-egged shadow of his play. Coward will be spinning in his grave! I don't doubt the actors were paid extremely well or they wouldn't have even considered it. I did try. I lasted half an hour, before wanting my own spirit guide to find Noel and apologise profusely.
Watched it cople of weeks ago. The guy is alright on his own the movie is dog's sh@$%. Very modern, very up to this era piece of 6$÷#@. I am in my 30s, and I am frankly tired if this "morden wave". This emasculation of modern men ( heroes) was old news 15 years ago.

The 1945 version is so classic.
I remember going to this play in high school
Looks good, when is it set? 30s?
yup the 1930's
@@LyllianaofMirrah Cool
Imma give it a try looks good
something i was looking for Spirit sessions + roaring twenties
Looks very interesting
Just watched this first day release on Amazon. What a huge disappointment. The trailer looked funny...the movie was not. The 1945 movie is far better, and was privileged to see Angela Lansbury on Broadway play this as a ‘comedy’ which sadly this movie is not. 👎🏻
This gives major "death becomes her 2020" vibes. Love it!
That movie would have been better with the deleted scenes.
Thanks people for writing reviews.
What the heck have they done to a wonderful story? What is wrong with Dench’s teeth? Why is Fox there? Please the Rex Harrison version. Made in the 1930s I think and the fashion and sfx are great. Why can’t they keep things simple.
This is getting too little recognition.
Holy shit, this movie is awful.
The acting (save for Leslie Mann) is just bad all around, and I love most of these actors, but god damn, they have no chemistry with each other at all, so that throws the romance on either end out the window. The direction is even worse, and I don’t know how much of this was adapted from the original play, but the dialogue is so unbearably corny and is about as subtle as a head-on airplane collision. All of this renders what I assume is a wonderful comedy classic and turns it into something vapid and disposable.
I haven't seen this, but I enjoyed the original '45 version.
@@HorrorMovies13 I caught a little of the original on the Criterion Channel, and the difference between them is night and day. The new version plays like that live action Tom and Jerry movie but they forgot to add the cartoon cat and mouse.
Pretty much sunk without a trace unsurprisingly.
i love this but i feel like the setting seems off. the home looks too modern
And at that you'd be completely wrong and you would be at fault for being naive.
This is very good.
I really like Dan Stevens!
Sad though that he, as well as everybody that goes Hollywood, has lost so much weight that he looks worryingly thin!
In Hollywood, it seems it's either that or roid muscles!
Seems like a fun movie though!
I watched 20 seconds of the trailer and my ultimate verdict is 'Yep, shit'. I love Judi but what the fuck is that interpretation of Madame Arcati?
Watching this to prepare for a theatre exam tomorrow in which I have to play Madame Arcarti! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Awww no! I love JD but not in this. Love the 1945 version too much.
Ok ill bite. But i dont think it will be good
Watch this in black & white.
Lovely film
Where can I watch it?
If you click on the film title (in Bold) it gives that info.
@@jenniferwilkerson2163 Thank you! It says "in theaters and VOD," so I guess I'll have to wait. Thanks again!
@@corydefenders5103 your welcome
British humour!
Look's good and fun😍
This looks TERRIFIC.
There's a new film.😂
Really?,is it?
I don't know!!! It looks to silly......
I guess they needed the money to play this obvious tragic "comedy".
Awesome movie. The critics didn't like it but they don't like anything that isn't over the top woke with every color in the rainbow in it.
Скучно, нудно, предсказуемо.
Just awful...very disappointed
