Two of these issues in particular may appear to be self-inflicted, but consider the following:
    1. A huge percentage of 6.4 owners who delete their DPFs never do an EGR delete, leaving the coolers in place as I had initially done. The rupturing of the horizontal cooler that I experienced was a result of the delete, however it is a legitimate issue that many owners have/will experience with the truck configured that way without the EGR deleted. As most people who are even slightly familiar with these trucks know, doing these deletes are IMPERATIVE to obtain any length of life out of these trucks.
    2. The broken pin in the clutch fan harness which had affected the A/C system is just a pain to deal with in general. The connector is extremely difficult to disconnect as the metal prongs become virtually welded together over the years. Anybody that has done a serpentine belt change on one of these trucks knows exactly what I am talking about. I am certainly not the first, and definitely not the last person to separate a pin from this harness by accident. Yes, this was a mistake, but who knows if I could have ever gotten it apart without that pin slipping loose. This is a tough little problem to find and I wanted to include it in this video as it is a simple problem that will be overlooked 9/10 times.
This video was intended to be an honest and detailed account of my ownership thus far. Nothing more and nothing less. If this truck gives me bigger troubles down the road, they will be documented here on the channel. I have nothing negative to report at this time because nothing from the laundry list of issues that these trucks can experience have actually happened to me personally. Everyone has a 6.4 horror story. I'll wait to tell mine until it actually happens to me. We will see how long this truck lives for! Thank you for watching.

Taylor, thanks for the video... really great and informative. I have an 08 F350 with the 6.4L, have not yet done the DPF, but will be doing it soon. I too planned to leave the EGR in place until it became an issue. My question is, how many miles did you go before it went on you, and what was the mileage when it did? Thanks.

Taylor Smith, I also have a 6.4 but my biggest problem is that mine ran away after a turbo failure but I still have and is currently rebuilding it, luckily the engine is still in good shape and it is also completely stock with about 233,000 miles but now I’m getting it all deleted. I have been working on it for the past 6 months and just finally got it to start but only for about 15 seconds then it just shuts off and goes in to a crank no start and there a no codes popping up so I’m assuming it might be a fuel system issue

I think I got lucky, the truck had 109,000 miles on it, the previous owner took great care of it inside and out. After watching your videos I ordered the replacement exhaust and the EGR delete kit plus the minimax tuner. Looking forward to seeing the oil stay clean for longer then 100 miles after I change it. Nice truck. I have 2 of the 6.4's. One is a 2008 F250 which I bought with about 150,000 miles on it, but it had already been deleted, and had been well taken care of. I've put well over 60,000 miles on it with no issues. Also have a 2008 F350 that wasn't in great shape when I bought it, and I had a local diesel mechanic do the delete on it. However, it was too late. On a trip to Wyoming hauling some stuff, I lost the engine. Cracked pistons, the whole nine yards. Moral of the story is religious maintenance and servicing. I love my 6.4.

Beautiful truck! I have a 2008 F250 and deleted everything at 32k miles. I love my truck. I have the H&S mini max and 99% of the time set it on "no power" and when towing I set it on "mild" as to not overload/hurt the trany/turbo due to the fact the original factory components were not designed for the added HP and torque. Oil, oil filter, fuel filters and coolant cap changes every 3k miles. Coolant flush/replacement every 2-3 years is key to protecting the "wet sleved" engine.

At 142000 miles my 09 6.4 grenaded. The #8 piston cracked. I spent the money for a re-manufactured engine. It runs great. I have a warranty on the engine and I still love the truck. It was a lot of money and it hurt, but to sell it and buy a new one would have been even more money.

@@tjlift22 I havent had it very long, it was one of my best friends trucks so I've been around it for years. The motor blew up on him because of the emission controls so he rebuilt the whole thing and deleted it with aftermarket parts. I did have the capped egr pipe blow out so I deleted the whole pipe. Last weekend i had the transfer case blow up on me due to the front drive shaft going out. If you lose power, it's most likely one of the up pipes for the turbos. If you feel the truck start vibrating when your driving pull over immediately and unbolt your front drive shaft, I made the mistake of letting it go and now the trucks down until I can dish out 1500 on a new transfer case. I love the truck and it's worth every problem I've had though.

I have the same tuck mentioned in this video. Over 250K. BONE STOCK! I pull big horse trailers and very big Teton Homes 5th wheel with it. The truck has amazing power. I still own a N/A 6.9 that I bought in high school, a N/A 7.3 and a Powerstroke 7.3 as well. I've owned two 6.0's. One of those went bang at 37,000 miles. The other one had just over 200 trouble free when I sold it. The 6.4 has had a few problems. Mostly cooling system related and not major. I personally think you can avoid most problems with these trucks by using them as they were designed. In other words, keep them warm/hot. These are not designed to be grocery-go-getters or commute cars. They are designed to haul. You can let an old 6.9 or 7.3 idle with the a/c on for a week and not hurt it. You idle any modern diesel for more than a few minutes and you'll have problems. Those twin turbo chargers provide an excellent balance of power at the low end and high end. Is it possible that the motor will become a boat anchor somewhere down the road? Sure. But my truck has been paid off for a long time and I use it for what it's designed to be used for. I suspect it will give me another 100K to 150K before I think about a rebuild.

I was able to replace that, delete the DPF and EGR and tune it for less than $500. This was all with the cab on, as I have skinny arms and tiny hands, and an excellent sawz-all. The biggest problem i see is from neglect. Frequent oil changes with synthetic oil and coolant replacement with the Motorcraft coolant additive is key. Heavy tunes and abuse are also tough on a 6.4.
Remove the valve covers and check the rocker arm tips for wear every 50.000 miles and replace as necessary.
I have seen these engines last 300.000 and more with proper care.

Ya, no surprise. On that turbo. Think of all that goop on those turbo fins going through that egr. Your turbo is a finely machined part that spins at incredible speed keeping balanced is critical to longevity. Getting all that goop all over the inlet fins is devastating and repeats performance as well it then increases carbon buildup in the cylinders and pistons and then out to the exhaust side of your turbos. A sure catastrophic event is imminent. Everything possible should be done to prevent this from happening. All this boils down to the economy and air quality. Beating any thing that the DPF can do. As reburn and regen is a toxic systems and should be banned. This is a failed solution. You know it they know it

I have an 08 6.4 F250. Bought it with 135K miles and the first thing I did was the DPF/EGR delete and added S&B cold air intake and SCT tuner. The tuner woke this beast up and it was fun driving. Way more torque than anything I owned before. later on, had the plastic radiator spring a leak and replace it with factory FOMOCO part. Next thing to go was the front brake caliper, replace both fronts calipers and rotors, next was the alternator burned up. I lifted the truck at 180K miles with a 6" BDS lift with leafs in the rear anf Fox shocks all around. Love the look of the truck lifted and I eventually added the BDS track bar to help with play and recently replaced the steering box with a Redhead box and it removed all the play from a truck with 220K miles and 37" tires. I did have a head gasket leak at 195K miles and did a cab off and replaced the head studs with ARP studs, redecked the heads and had the rocker arm assemblies replaced while the cab was off along with the normal things you'd do with a cab off such as replaced the up-pipe that had a leak. The rocker arm assemblies were actually in good shape and no cylinders where scorched. it's been running fine for the last 25-30K miles with no issues. I am religious about maintenance on the truck and do oil and fuel filter changes regularly and use Schaffer fuel all-season carbon treatment in the fuel. I'd say most of the repairs I've done are regular maintenance wear and tear stuff other than the cab off repair. I've been happy with the truck and knew what I had to do when I bought it. Key thing is regular maintenance and don't abuse it with heavy tunes if you haven't built up the other parts to handle the added power and boost.

Very nice looking truck. Love the dully in the 6.4 best
My brother has two 6.4 trucks they work great after deleting as long as they were not washed out already when they were deleted.
The problem with the dpf on them was the exhaust stroke being used to fuel the dpf witch washes the oil off the cylinder walls causing them to wear fast then lose compression. But the gm lmm engine had the same problem. Then some make it a long time with he dpf still on if they run nice and clean and if they are run dirty they are likely to blow up sooner.

Great video bro! Stay strong 6.4!
I also installed a coolant filter kit. I had read somewhere that our radiator also has some cast aluminum parts that breakdown some allowing the contaminates to flow through 🤷‍♂️. I believed it and installed a filter to help that out. Another collant problem I had was the driver side main line from the block only has 1 oring inside each end. Mine began to leak pretty bad over the course of a couple weeks. Luckily Motorcraft redesigned this line to have 2 orings on each end. So after a nice shower of coolant that has been replaced and never been an issue since! 126000 miles and still going strong!

I have a 08 350 Lariat and only had minor issues(knock on wood). The biggest problem is RUST!!!! The rocker panels are going to need to be replaced and I’m currently getting estimates on a new bed. The bed rails are rusted away(under the bed that attaches to the frame).

I drive an 08 550 as a company hotshot truck, stupid stuff breaks down all the time. They want to get rid of it. Ive told them theres nothing really wrong with it, just needs driven more than twice a year for less than 2000 miles. I love running that truck. The 6.4 with the 6 manual and 4x4 and crew cab. For a 550 it rides pretty nice, better than our 250. Way nicer than the volvo tractor i drive most all the time.
Ive found over many years of turning wrenches and driving, diesels will breakdown for stupid reasons when their not run

Such a clear and bright video! I don't know much about these trucks except for the problems that everyone talks about but can they all be bad? I'm looking at a 2010 F250 6.4 with 115K miles it has had 4 owners!! according to Carfax..for sale at a dealer now..What should I look for? I have yet to go see in person.. It does have some kind of a digital screen mounted on the left a-pillar (??) where they mount the extra gauges at...again, I am not an expert on these truck..I want to buy a truck bed camper and will need a large enough truck is why I'm even looking into this size truck..anyway, it is a small digital screen that shows coolant temp, boost and some pyro temp?? also turbo boost too but the truck has a factory turbo boost gauge already..Any advice??? Sorry If I sound like an idiot..I just don't know enough about these newer Ford diesels..I know the 7.3 is a good truck of course but have heard many issues with the others..or at least the 6.0 engines..

I was expecting to see some real problems and you've had none. I put 197,000 on mine till I had my first problem. Hpfp. Still have original alternator but on my third stater. Original ac. 2nd fan clutch. Original short block 260,000 on it now. I rebuilt the whole top end and fuel system when I did the hpfp. Original turbos and rad which has finally started to leak.

Fix the rad asap it will leed to huge problems. Bite the bullet and get an aftermarket aluminum rad with mounting brackets. Don't wait. Do it now or drain the system and stop driving it until you can have it fixed. Again rad leaks are serious.

That is what happens in the DPF. Some EU shops have installed a quick disconnect for the DPF can than doing a chemical soak seems to work. Also, there have been some results with removing the DPF can, and as long as the honeycomb isn't too badly plugged. Burning it out with a propane tiger torch and blowing high-pressure air through it has had variable results. Remember PPE is a must and only qualified persons familiar with these tools should attempt any of these procedures.

2008 F250 King Ranch, everything stock w/ HS minimaxx tune since it was bought used in 2008. Spring 2019 broke down couldn't get it to fire back up. When it was all said and done we are told the fuel system needs to be replaced. The entire fuel system. $8,0000! My conclusion is this. With the tune and the increase of air/fuel being delivered and not upgrading the injectors and what not shortened the life of the fuel system (i.e. the injectors primarily.) And at 10 1/2 years, the fuel system had just died earlier than it would have without the tune on the stock injectors. Lemme know if you think that is essentially right.

It’s easy. First tip is do the filter on the frame rail first so there’s not as much fuel in the rest of the upper system and not so much a mess when you have to remove the fuel filter & water separator covers located side by side, on top of the engine right up front . Primary tool is a “1 5/16 socket and 1/2” extension works best, I believe. Also, second tip is to use the drain lever on the lower filter housing to drain all fuel from that point forward out of the system first & that helps keep it neat too. To bleed it, just cycle key and crank for 30 seconds, repeat until it fires, then stumbles to life and smoothes out. Some models utilize a bleeder screw on filter housings to “bleed” air from the system to help facilitate starting as these fuel systems are notorious for failing to start with air still in system. Check your work for leaks or problems. Pretty simple. One thing about Fords, their tough and can stand a lot of abuse. As long as you maintain them routinely. But I better shut up or put myself out of a job!

LOL @ the folks talking about their problem-free 6.4s. That's the exception, not the rule. Besides, it'd be interesting to know what problems are actually lurking inside these "problem-free" 6.4 engines, ready to cost the owner thousands in repairs. The 6.4 trucks are good for one thing - Cummins swaps. The interiors were awesome and they make great swap platforms. It's just the 6.4 and its poor built quality and insanely complicated problem-prone design that is the turd.

Looking for some input from 6.4 owners. I’m asking here because I don’t feel like joining a forum, and I’ve searched endlessly for a like minded person to myself but can find no one, since the entire diesel truck community seems to be hellbent on bulletproofing, and trying to make as much power as possible, which I am not. I’m looking to get a 6.4, because I want a nice diesel truck and that’s about what I can afford. I’m looking at a 2008 6.4 f250. I’m not interested in making power. Aside from pushing the pedal just to hear the turbos spool up, I’m not a guy who would be anywhere remotely close to abusing my trucks. I don’t race around, I don’t do burnouts. So my question is this, because it seems to be what I’ve learned from hours and hours of research. If I fully delete a 6.4, I mean everything, run it on a stock tune, drive like a normal person (like I usually would) and do routine maintenance in about half the recommended intervals (what I usually do anyway, I change the oil on my other 2 cars every 3000 miles) will a 6.4 behave for me? Any input is appreciated. I’m well aware of all of their issues, and I’m not interested in short, no explanation comments. If you have anything helpful to add as to why I should or shouldn’t buy this 6.4 knowing the kind of owner I’d be, please let me know. Thanks homies
I want to add, the 6.4 I am looking at is a single owner, 50,000 mile truck that is bone stock and appears to be very well visually cared for. I know that’s not necessarily a reflection of mechanical care, but it is completely unmodified cosmetically and mechanically.

He is a ford certified mechanic as he’s gone through ford schooling. His reveal to me was those engines prior to ? Mine is a 2009. Were all outsourced from a third company for three years. Yup there’s a bunch of them out there. This motor was only in RnD for about 90 days before being released into production as he explained to me. So my advice is stay away from the 6.4 from 2007-2011
