    I was at this show, about 60' from the stage just left of center. It was awesome. But they don't show enough of Larry Campbell, who is among my favorite guitarist/multi-instrumentalists in this video. The non-GD covers were great to see too.

    Line Up: Phil Lesh: Bass, Trey Anastasio: Guitar, John Medeski: Keys, Larry Campbell: Guitar/Violin/Pedal Steel, John Molo: Drums - 2006 was an amazing year for Trey and Phil with GRAB and Phil and Friends touring during the summer and then playing this festival a couple months later.

      I never knew this was the show that got trey busted 🤣😂😂 i think it was at the orleans...tricky to cross the strip to the fly side, I'm sure that's where they got him. Sheeit we swerved across to the Motel 6, high as fuck on acid, and chonged fatties and pounded mixers. Medeski stole the show btw

      Trey was in NY I believe when he got pulled over. I don't ever remember it being after a show or him being on tour when it happened. It was right around this time though because I remember seeing TAB NYE that year at 930 and it was his last show before his court date.

    Good Grief. Is my memory so cooked that I can't even remember the venue for this place? I was at this festival but this show looks like it was outside at the main venues when I remember it being in the Orleans arena , late night, where I was staying, and saw string cheese either the night before or night after. I thought it was late night indoors late night. This poor video quality doesn't help. Great festival. Great performances. I thought this one was fine but I was so wiped out by the time I even got into this one. Mars Volta, Widespread Panic, String Cheese, this one, the Rythim Devils, Tom Petty. Some good shit.

      He was at his worst in his personal life but not his professional life. Phish has been on a steady decline the last 13-14 years with their shows becoming more & more formulaic with obligatory jams. Pre breakup Trey was at his worst in 2004 when his cocaine habit was out of control. It’s a fine line because 2003 is the best year they ever had.

  • @PaulTheSkeptic
    @PaulTheSkeptic 9 лет назад +1

    I love Phil to death man, he's the best but man he can't sing. I know he's a highly trained and quite schooled musician. I read his biography. You'd think he'd better be able to stay in key. He's close but that's not quite good enough for vocals. I guess he's having a good time though and giving the crowd a few last shows to remember before the entire scene passes on the way all good things do. Sorry to be such a bummer but all good things come to an end. :'(

    • @lapulapui
      @lapulapui 7 лет назад

      Paul TheSkeptic, I do hear you about the vocals... gotta go half-full though.
      And we have a long way to go. The whole diaspora and JB genre has really bloomed. Here in NorCal at least it's thick with the spawn of the Dead. So much so that I have to get a grip on myself to not feel greedy!
      Happy birthday to one of the greatest bass players in the world too!!!!

    There is something very "off" about this performance, but I can't put my finger on what is wrong. Somehow it is less than the sum of its parts. Trey's in his own little world? Phil singing so much? Drumming and keys too heavy handed? No rehearsals? Mysterious.

      quartzimaging I'm with you man, I think its the other guitar player, not that he's bad or anything but there more too this music than hard rock and blues licks, the light exploratory feel isn't there, and the chemistry is not there, if you compare it to the Phil & Friends with Trey and Kimock, which is in an absolute high shelf league of its own, this stuff doesn't even come close. Buts that being said this still smokes what most bands are capable of, but I think with raised standards of knowing what some of these guys are capable of this show is disappointing

    • @gigrant74
      @gigrant74 9 лет назад +1

      Charlie Buzzell i stopped listening 5 minutes in for some of the same reasons. its like they just met 1 minute before the gig started. trey flubbed the first attempt at the first verse (he missed it altogether) and the other guitar player is doing horrible things. and then there's Phil's voice. God i love his bass playing. and God i hate his vocals. he really should just stop singing altogether before somebody gets hurt. zero chemistry in this group on this occasion, but i've heard them kill it on others so don't call me a hater. just pointing out that this one can be skipped.

    i must have some genetic disorder, I don't feel Trey..O yea thats right I need something with more "soul" in it..like I said "it's not you, it's me....

    • @samferguson9171
      @samferguson9171 5 лет назад +5

      No genetic disorder on your part; this was just a rough performance and a rough period for Trey. And the musical setting isn't the best for his talents. He has always been greatest with his own band - his unique skills don't always translate to other bands or musical situations. This comment might feel like a whinging apology, but I love the man and it pains me when other music fans don't hear what makes him special.

    • @Phishcactus
      @Phishcactus 6 лет назад +3

      I know it's two years late and 2 others have corrected you, but this was the lowest point in Trey's life. Phish fans had watched everything they loved, the force behind their passion for Phish, eroding quickly before their eyes in front of thousands on stage. This happened from around 2001 and culminated in 2006, but specifically in 2004 with the "final" break up of phish. The opiates, cocaine, and god knows what else, had an interesting effect on Trey's playing and did not make it unenjoyable, though it was less restrained and more self-serving for the most part - this is often referred to as the "oxy hose" or "oxy shred" playing style period.
      As we saw at the concerts you expressed concern about, the dead reunion, trey fully committed himself to learning the material - he is an amazing student, and was able to devote himself fully to honoring jerry's memory. Of course, this could have gone differently, and even though trey is clean, the phish 3.0 era (and trey's playing since the 3.0 began) has had its ups and downs, but it's clear that when trey puts in the work he performs well.
      Not trying to stroke trey too hard, nor criticize you, as it's 2 years later and other people already shared similar opinions. Just thinking out loud is all. Hope you did in fact find trey's performance at the gd50 shows to be acceptable - and hope you have done well as a person in the 2 years that elapsed since you posted your comment.
      Regards and best wishes
      BJ

      @@Phishcactushe was off cocaine during this concert. He became addicted to pain pills bc he used them to get off cocaine. His personal life was hell at this point but not his professional life outside of Phish. Besides phish in 2004 when he was using several thousand dollars worth of cocaine a day all his other playing in this era post cocaine was spectacular. Also the reason phish was so bad in 04 wasn’t just because of him they were all burned out & not getting along personally or financially/business. There’s a lot of myth/fake news out there about this time period.
