Detrusor Underactivity (DU) is a poorly-understood condition. It impacts on patients’ quality of life as well as on the outcomes of therapeutic intervention, and therefore deserves better recognition.
To date, progress in the understanding of DU has been hampered by the lack of a precise definition and criteria for diagnosis. A wide range of terminology has been used to describe the condition. While it is diagnosed by urodynamic criteria, there is no standard urodynamic test to diagnose and quantify DU. Instead it is based on computer algorithms which have their own drawbacks.
All these problems suggest that treatment of the underlying pathophysiology is impossible, with intermittent catheterisation and drug therapy of poor efficacy being the only options until recently. However, in the last decade or so, with an increased awareness of DU and its implications new treatment modalities have become available.
In this ESU Webinar, Mr. Jay Khastgir seeks to clarify some of the key issues that urologists face when dealing with this condition, and will lead a discussion of the emerging treatment options.
