F-16 vs MiG 29 - Which would win?
F-16 and MiG-29 were designed in order to achieve different goals. F-16 was designed to be a cost effective, light multirole jet that could be a support to more superior F-15 Eagle. Whereas, the MiG-29 is a typical air-superiority fighter jet. For MiG-29 designers range and avionics were not as crucial as powerful engines, high altitude flights, rate of climb, speed and the ability to take off from really shabby runways. We thought it would be interesting to compare these two legendary fighter jets, and determine which would most likely win in a hypothetical dogfight in this video.
1. Specifications
Let’s have a look at some specs first.
F-16 was first introduced in 1978. 4,600 F-16's have been built so far with per unit cost of $ 35 m. Operated by crew of 1 the Aircraft’s empty weight is 18,900 lb, and maximum take-off weight is 42,300 pounds. The jet is powered by a single engine producing 28,600 pounds of thrust. With maximum range of 2,620 miles, the aircraft can gain top speed of 1,320 mph. The fighter jet comes with 9 Hardpoints in addition to a 20 mm rotary cannon. The combat radius of the aircraft is 340 miles.
On the other hand, MIG 29 was first rolled out in 1982. Around 1600 MIG 29s are being operated by Air Force and other countries. At present per-unit cost of the latest variant is around $23.7M. Operated by a crew of 1, the aircraft comes in at weight of 24,250 lb with maximum take-off weight around 44,100 pounds. The Jet is powered by 2 turbofan engines generating 36,684 pounds of thrust combined. With maximum range of 888 miles, the jet can reach at top speed of 1,490 mph. The fighter jet is fitted with 7 Hardpoints in addition to a 30 mm cannon. The combat radius of the aircraft is 441 miles.
2. Maneuverability
The most important factor in deciding a dogfight is maneuverability; the maximum rate and radius of turn. To maximize its maneuverability F-16 was intentionally designed to be aerodynamically unstable…
In contrast, MiG-29 has superior turning rates and super maneuverability. This was achieved with advanced aerodynamics. The tail of MiG-29 is positioned to take advantage of the four vortices by the wing and fuselage….
3. Power & Speed
F16 is powered by single General Electric F110-GE-129 turbofans engine, which produces 28,600 pounds of thrust. The aircraft can fly at top speed of Mach 2…
On the other hand, a major driver of the MiG 29 performance is its 2 afterburning turbofan engines generating around 36,684 pounds of thrust….
4. Radar & Avionics
F-16 is equipped with latest APG-68 radar which enables all-weather targeting with high resolution detection and imaging. The latest variant is fitted with glass cockpit, upgraded mission computer…
Whereas, MIG 29 is equipped with latest radar which is equivalent of F 16s APG-68 with similar range and air-to-ground modes. All variants of MiG-29 included an optical locator system mounted on top of the nose…
5. Firepower
The F-16 has 9 hard points and can be armed with a range of air-to-air missiles, including Aim-9 Side winder, Magic II, aim-7, Sky Flash and aim-120. The high off bore sight, infrared Air to air missiles such as aim-9X, Python IV, aim-132 and IRIS-T can also be fitted. The aircraft also supports the integration a range of AGM anti-ship missiles and AGM-65 Maverick air-to-ground tactical missile…
On the other hand, The MiG-29 fighter is equipped with seven external weapon hardpoints. The aircraft can carry up to 2 R-27 air-to-air medium-range missiles, 6 R-73 and R-60 air-to-air short range missiles, 4 pods of S-5, S-8, S-24..

Both jets are beautiful. I flew the F-16 for 8 years. It comes down to the pilot skill to whichever one wins
I flew f22
I guess the surrounding too: The US has mastered the warfare in a network with other branches, while we witness on the other hand how the Russian branches fail miserably to coordinate their efforts. Also communication and intel is crucial for the success of a mission. A one to one situation, more so a dogfight, has become a rarity in modern aerial warfare.
Lastly things like logistics and maintenance.

Pilot skill plays the most important role in a confrontation.
not really, they will both turn and pull up hard, that's all.
That's beside the point. We're comparing aircraft here, so that assumes pilots of equal skill.
When Germany was unified, the West German pilots with their Tornados and the East German pilots with their Mig-29s performed joined exercises and mock dogfights. The East German pilots were claiming that they had scored more kills. The West German wouldn't accept these claims. As it turned out to be, the Mig-29 was armed with the short range R-73 Archer short range missile which could kill at a 40 degree angle. This missile had thrust vectoring capabilities. The Germans dissected this missile and later came up with the IRIS-T missile. The point of the story is, that the strength of the platform depends on the strength of the weapons.
Strength and range.
Yes, radar and missile platforms are very important. But the Tornado is a cold war era long range interceptor designed to catch and kill incoming bombers. It makes a terrible air superiority fighter since that isn't what it is. The Tornado is more like a slower MiG-25 Foxbat. Even if it had the best state of the art radar and missile systems it would still get waxed in a close fight if the pilots are remotely similar in skill which is what you are describing. The Tornado obviously has a chance if it has superior radar and better BVR missile systems since it then wouldn't likely come to a close engagement.
great answer!
@@flipadavis the problem is that it wasn't just west Germans that experienced this. The Americans trained in Germany regularly due to Germany having MiG-29s. And the east German MiG-29 pilots regularly won against F-16 and F-18s

The only way to know who is better is a paintball fight, so no one gets hurt.
I personally think these two planes are the most equal west vs east matchup possible. It will depend on the pilot skills, situation and tactical usage of the plane that will decide the outcome. The Polish airforce has had the posibillity to test them against each other and they stated that when the pilots where equally good in a dogfight the Mig29 wins. But at long distance engagements they had the better options available on the F-16. But that's a no-brainer since Poland has left the Poland/Russia weapons deal and no longer receives the best and latest options.
Best radar and rockets
But the F-16 and Mig-29 is multi-role, so in hitting grounds targets I would they the F-16 is better.
@@alastair9446 I hate to be wrong. But I guess I am wrong here. And you are right. So yeah indeed the F16 would be better at attacking ground targets indeed. So all-round the F16 would win as you say. 🙂
Larry David also said the "wheel" as an invention.. . sucked. He also said Coffee would fail, as a drink.. . and, also said electric cars (or radios?) would fail! Dogfights are not that common in real life I would gather. It would probably be other factors that are much more important.
I grew up with these fighter jets. In simulators, if you can squeeze out some AMRAAMs early, F-16 can win. But once you're close, MIG-29 has better turning radius so F-16 has to rely on the Sidewinder's off-bore targeting. That said, the MIG-29's Archer is deadly because of the IRST.
When dogfighting, it's all about pilot skills.
While I don't want to actually say one of them is the better jet....
I like the look of the Mig 29 more, it just screams "I'm dangerous".
But f16 looks sleek n sexier 😁

Both machines are technological marvels and each is more than capable. I think the presenter did a great job of reaching his conclusions and I agree.

Unbiased review well done but i like the beautifully designed F16 it looks awesome 👍
The pilot that has more experience and training, and with a ground crew that has given the best maintenance to the aircraft he is piloting, will win.

@@mantastic4292 Lmao
Half Armenian and half Jewish . Mikoyan and Gurevich.
In BVR (long range) the F16 would have a huge advantage due to their superior missiles. They have AIM-120Cs, which have a 2 way data-link and onboard radar. As a result it can guide a missile to the target without giving away that it launched a missile, and the missile will continue to track to the target's last known location and kill them even if the F16 has to turn cold (away).
Whereas an R-27ER depends on the MiG's radar to find its target. The F-16 will know exactly when the ER is launched, and the missile will go stupid if the Mig-29 is forced to retreat. The R-77-1 has capabilities much closer to that of the AIM-120c, but sacrifices range/energy to do so.
In a guns only dogfight it's very close. Germany still operates MiG-29s from the pre-cold war era and has done a number of training exercises with American F16s. Those cooperative dogfight training exercises show a close range battle between the two can go either way. It almost always comes down to user skill, but 90% of the time battles end long before gun range.
That depends on terrain features. )))))))
This is the answer. Additionally, closer range Fox 2 engagements win with 9Xs and off-boresight. I'm aware that the Archer exists, but I think the 9X performs better in real world testing
If you compare a Mig29 A to An F16 block 52 then yes. but compare it to a Mig 29 m then they are equal

@@slimantarraf1576 If I was choosing the new generation of fighter it would be a close tie between the F22 and the SU-57. And only because I like the larger width of the Su-57
@God Love That is true to a degree. If you buy a Russian export plane, they intentionally downgrade the avionics and systems so it won't be as good as the ones they keep for themselves. So the only good Russian fighter is an actual Russian fighter.
Russia only has a tiny handful of prototype SU-57s and obviously they aren’t even in front line service. It’s stealth characteristics are poor compared to the F-22. Russia is for more concerned with building low rate prototype aircraft that look aggressive but never had any intention of going into full scale production.

An interesting thing I've read is that the MiG-29 has a godly turn radius for the first turn. After that it seems to fall off, whereas the F-16 can sustain a 9G turn for a much longer time. Also I think the test pilots said that the F-16 was able to perform vertical maneuvers better, though I could have misread that.
Another thing that goes beyond simply fighter to fighter is command and control. I think the US/NATO AWACS far outclasses the Russian system (this is unfounded and based on anecdote however, so please search for yourself), and would thus allow U.S./NATO forces to engage more easily.
I'm no analyst, but these fighters seem so evenly matched it would solely come down to fighter pilot skill in a dogfight.

NIKKO If you have a trained pilot versus another trained pilot, you could be the Red Baron and it still wouldn’t make a lick of difference if he is in a biplane. Similar, if you have a multi role fighter against an air superiority fighter. That isn’t the point though. The point is F 16 versus MiG 29, as I posted the statistics of the gulf war above.... since none were shot down, versus MiG 23s/21s and 29s which suffered multiple casualties we can already determine what plane is likely better. If they are completely equal, either the USA has such legendary training that automatically turn Joe Shmoe into an air God....or the other pilots are smoking weed and sipping a .40 before they get in their planes....that trained pilots versus trained pilots on an even platform would at least have somewhat of a balance but there is zero.

@@MyWorld-rl7lm F 16 down by mig 21 ... tch tch tch.moreover 300 out of the world. Imagine if our mig 21 shoots your (i mean USA's , you guys cant afford it) F16. Then what would rafale do
F16 win easy vs mig29 ! F16 block 70 fuck mig35 !!
As a North American, Ive ALWAYS respected the Reds’ aerospace engineering. They make some beautiful planes too - especially the su27
They're always a couple steps behind us. And in the case of the F-15, many steps behind.
As a aerospace engineer I believe US always has the edge over the Red. Always.
Of course the pilot skills are the most important. But if need to say which one is better I think it is the Mig 29.
F-16 : 76 wins and 1 loss.
MIG-29 : 6 wins and 20 losses.
The last air to air combat involving MIG-29 and a US jet fighter was in 1999 ,when one F-15 shot down two MIG-29's with AMRAAM missiles
That 1999 when f 117 shot down whit S 125?
@@cira90g That wasn't air to air combat and it was pure luck and underestimating by NATO.
@@chichopepelopez then why did a b2 also get deatroyed? Its not luck again
Victories against weak opponents and under trained pilots.
That was a fair and unbiased comparison I have heard and seen. The conclusion was that F16 has a very slight edge because of slightly better radar. Now I am not being biased here,, just revealing a truth. In the last 10 months (after this video was made), Mig29 has gone through an unexpected upgraded. Has anyone heard of Mig29 UPG upgrade? Well because of that the slight edge of F16's radar is lost. Now it really and only depends on the Pilots skill.
Let the Americans integrate a mig 29 with their hardware and software and it would be superior. America just has a bigger budget and better technology. But the Russians designed the better barebones plane.
@@forfun6273 MiG-29 has a 6-18 combat record (3 MiG-29's get shot down for every kill they get). F-16 has a 76-1 combat record (nearly flawless). Quit overhyping Russian weapon platforms, they're severely overrated.
@@Horible4 yeah who’s been flying each?
@@forfun6273 This excuse has been used for 5 generations of Soviet fighters. The MiG-21 also has a losing record at 240 kills to 501 shot down. Are you really going to try to convince me the Russians have been putting poorly trained pilots in their supposedly most formidable fighters for over 60 years? On paper these aircraft are told to be dangerous but when they actually get into combat, they get clobbered. The F-16, F-4, F-15, F-14, all have enjoyed the best combat records of any fighter in history. Not a single Russian aircraft comes close to their level of success. You can't convince me these thing's aren't flying propaganda.
Let's face it, no movie fighter jet confrontation was ever settled BVR.
The smoke trail coming out of the MiG-29’s will make it lose.
Fun Fact: The Air Force of Poland has both aircrafts
Right but only the 70% mig Version ;-)
Opłaca się ten deal z 28-mioma mig-29 w zamian za 28 f-16?
it operator dependent
One big disadvantage is its smoking engines that can be see from a distance. The same problem the F4-Phantom had until its engines were upgraded. It boils down to pilot skill but my money is on the f16
Up to the pilots both great machines
In the end it all comes down to weapons systems.
The best piolet survive that's it
@@kapasayskonichwa6646 Crap. Some of the best pilots in WW2 and other conflicts were shot out of the sky by inexperienced pilots simply because they were flying superior aircraft with superior weaponry.
Put two pilots in the same aircraft then the best pilot will prevail.
@Юрий Тойкичев my only comment is, you best stay out of the airforce if that is what you believe.
It is not the machine wins, The man behind the machine wins.
yes, very wise words.
It depend on the pilot skills. You dominate the plane, you dominate the sky...pilot skills and the good intergration of avionics
super maneuverability of the Mig 29 seems like a circus. If anybody remembers in Top Gun movie Maveric br
My country (Romania) had Mig29's a while ago, but the Russians refused to sell us spare parts anymore, so we had to buy used F16's from other countries. My dad flew on the modernized Mig29 Sniper, and now, at the end of his career, is flying on F16 bought from Portugal. He's saying that his Mig was better, even though he wasn't a comunist...
Russkie would sell you spare parts, but you have to pay in real currency and not oranges.
We have new F16s that are made to go toe-to-toe with modern Russian aircraft. It's the F-16 Block 70
@@florianthomas7852 My country is not in Southern Europe, Africa, Asia or South America, therefore the climate doesn't allow growing orage trees or any other tropical or subtropical plants. Reading a book at least from time to time might help you on long term, you know...
@@AGC2021 Did I hurt your proud romanian feelings? I actually read this book here "Britain's 'Political Romance' with Romania in the 1970s" where you can read about Ceausescus generals interest in the british jets, they tried to sign a Memorandum of understanding
on the purchase of brandnew Hawker Siddeley Harrier
jets.
However instead of paying the brits in hard currency like british pound or USD, the romanian government wanted to make an exchange in the delivery of fruits, amongst them were oranges.
Pahahahaha.
@@florianthomas7852 I doubt this happened, nobody's stupid enough to buy oranges (since we can't produce them) in order to trade them for something else - why spending money on them instead of spending on the object of interest? If that book exists, it must be full of bullshit. Anyway, after Ceausescu's visit in UK in the 70's, we started to make british BAC 1-11 passanger jets at Brasov, this is the historical fact.
Another historical fact: the russians refused to sell us spare parts for Mig29 as a revenge, because we modernized the communication, navigation and armament systems of the old 110 Mig21 fighters we had, in partnership with Elbit (a company from Israel), and not with them.
And how do you think we bought the F-16s we have today, with papaya and avocado? :))
"Shoot 'em, Pookie! Shoot 'em!"
I was actually thinking of the time Pink Guy first encountered the Tap Brothers.
These titles of who would win, this fighter or that fighter reminds me of videos about who would win a warrior with a katana or a warrior with a long sword. The answer is always the same. The better swordsman or in this case, the better fighter pilot.
A study found F-16 has a 92:13 kill/loss ratio, with MiG 29 having a 16:28 kill/loss ratio.
Aright, let’s settle this. Someone get Growling Sidewinder to prove who’s the winner
True that
2 very different airframes and it would depend on the pilot not the airframe.
Wont be long now... Presently Syrian Air Force is attacking targets in Idlib and Turkey is trying to protect the Idlib targets. So first we shall see Turkish F16 vs Syrian MIG29. If the aircraft are equal then it is up to the pilots.
Then it depends upon the Syrian Air Force if they want to take on the Israeli AF which is attacking Iranian targets in Syria using F-16s and F-15s..
So the real life answer to this question will be coming soon.
Possible but I think it will be more around Turkish f16 against some sams Syria is in war long time and pilots are not well trained in general plus new migs are deployed no more infos about its trainings equipment etc and for Israels f15 f16 they doing some serious tactics i think it will take some more time to be hold down
@@jaccb.861 yes Israeli pilots are better trained with excellent skills and a kill motto
As a syrian let me drop some truth bombs:
1_ Israeli AF are attacking all military targets (syrian iranian) except Russian.
Russia wont let syrian AF or AA defences retaliate fearing political problems with the US (mostly because the US are waiting for a reason to tighten the noose on syria in any way they can) and israel are staying away from Russian targets for the same reason so syrain MIGs taking on Israeli F16s is not happening.
3_turkey actually crossed the syrian border and are occupying syrian grounds but Russia wont let syria do anything for the same reasons as above and syrian AF is not going near idlib russian AF are bombing a few terrorist targets far from the Turkey occupied zones.
4_even if things escalate to all out war levels(extremely unlikely) Syria has a shit air force but enough AA missiles with so many types that they would give even the US air force pause(not enough to beat it back but enough to incur seriouse losses) so 90% of engagements would be AA missiles vs planes not dog fights.
In conclusion Russia the USA turkey and israel are having themselves a cold war rematch while us Syrians are slaughtered robbed and economically starved for absolutely no fault of our own

F-16 Newar blocks like Block 52+, block 60, block 70/72 easily MAKE first radar lock on Mig-29 UPG or Mig-35 with its Better Radar and Better BVR. Missile
On the Mig 29 UPG yes. But not on the Mig 35. The Mig 35 outclasses the F16 Block 52. Maybe the block 70 would fare better.
Combination of fighters in battle is more important...... that's why airforce of many countries uses combination of different fighters in battle
The F-16 looks pregnant with the conforming fuel tanks..
Sound like mig 29, also depend on pilot skills
I must admit, the MIG is damn sexy. You can't compare the 2 planes. An F15 would be the proper opponent against an MIG 29. The F16 doesn't stand a chance
Wrong comrad.
They’re both very good planes, so in this case it would all boil down to the skill of the pilot.
As a BF3 player that was once ranked top 3 in fighter jet kills on the ps3 platform, I'd also come to the conclusion that it all boils down to the pilot.
😂👍
