@Douglas Jones Flying hunter of the shadows death-distributor, not a death-trap like a Flanker. Su-35 doesn’t even do very well against the Gripen C or J-10C. Why? Lower RCS values, better missiles. Guess who has a far lower RCS value and better missile PK than Gripen C or J-10C? Chinese PLAAF already did tactical exploitation of their Su-35S and concluded it’s a lot of hype. They want AESAs in their Flankers, with their own IRST and PL-15 missiles, not any of the Russian stuff. The only missile they liked was the R-73, but their copy of the Israeli Python HOBS missile is superior when they tested them. If you allow a Flanker to get within visual range of a 4.5 Gen fighter, it will be at least on parity with you. F-35 has IR stealth systems that make the WVR an uphill battle, so don’t ever get near an F-35 is all you can say. They don’t let you anyway, so it doesn’t matter. Rules of the new road...
@Douglas Jones F-35s have their own Local Area Network with Line-of-sight data link, not omnidirectional Wide Area Network like 4th Gen fighters have. F-117A combat record: 1271 combat sorties in Desert Storm 850 combat sorties over Bosnia/Serbia 1 shot down 0 combat fatalities It has no radar, no EW, no radar warning, nothing but a good navigation system and FLIR + laser spot tracker hidden in the belly for guiding its Laser-Guided Bombs. They were ordered to fly the same corridor multiple nights in a row. The night in question, the EA-6Bs were down for maintenance, and Russian spotters in Italy relayed what aircraft were taking off. No EA-6Bs with HARM missiles meant SAM sites could search longer, be a bit more bold. Dani's SA-3 crew set their radars to lower frequency against orders, and got a brief glimmer of the F-117As when bomb bay doors were opened, then disappeared. They had to turn around and fly over the same area by orders of Clinton's SECDEF, while SAM batteries were scanning actively. Dani's crew saw them at 13km, manually tracked and fired a Salvo of 2 different SAMs from the site. One missed, while the other proximity-detonated near the F-117, causing a wing to shear off and go out of control. Pilot ejected and went into E&E mode, got picked up by AFSOF CSAR elements. Had that been an F-35, the F-35 pilots would have seen every tiny RF and thermal emission overlaid on high resolution AESA ground-mapping imagery from over the horizon, actively looking for SAM sites to smoke. Totally different ballgame.
Of course a modern 21st century lockheed jet is better than an old soviet late 80s fighter. Except maneuverability, Su-35 was designed to be supermaneuverable unlike the F-35.
That's probably true when you are always fighting militants, but when you are fighting a foe with modern weapons, that superiority is eroded. Radars, stingers and Patriots have kept Russia from Air Supremacy, but not Ukraine's jets.

There are no stealth fighters, its just a propaganda. The first stealth fighter F-117 was shot down by an old russian radar and rocket system in the 90's, just by modifying the wavelength of the radar (by officer Zoltan Dani). The precise explanation of "stealth fighters" is that they are invisible for most of the radar systems, but not all.

Something to note is that USAF has trained against allied MiG-29s in mock battles (thanks to the fall of the USSR). Of course there are going to be differences, but the general flight envelope of the MiG-29 & Su-27/35 are very similar. NATO has likely already understood the strengths and weaknesses of Russia's fighter jet design doctrine. This contrasts Russia, who hasn't had any experience with American jets except 80s F-14/16s. Also, the F-35A and F-22 handle have much superior AoA abilities compared to American 4th gen, so another mystery. *I pray to God that none of what I said will matter and WW3 doesn't break out, and I'm not even a fighter pilot so what do I know*

It seems that one thing is never made clear. In the early days of F-35 videos when they were still testing, I saw the F-35 get followed by a drone from behind and the F-35 was able to shoot it down without facing the target. The directed aperture system enables the aircraft to target in all directions while flying in any other, so the F-35 doesn't need to maneuver.
The su-35 can do the same with its look and shoot capability, basically all the pilot needs to do is look in the general direction of its target and bam you have a lock on to it
The winner is usually the one who sees his opponent first. With the superior stealth and ability to fire missiles in any direction the advantage is with the F-35

The F35 has 360 degree targeting and firing. That alone means the pilot doesn't need to be pulling high G maneuvers. It can fire and let the missile do the maneuvering. SU35 wouldn't stand a chance.

Avoiding sight contact with a defender by pre-elimination with further reaching ordinance is an ancient and well proven technique. Definitely favored in prolonging the lives of Pilots and aircraft.
This is of course assuming that the F-35 has no ordinance on its wings because as soon as it does, it's no longer stealthy and the Russians could pick-it off with their R-37M LAAMs while remaining safely outside of AIM-120 range. Even if an unladen-winged F-35 successfully takes down an Su-35, it will be doing so at the cost of its own existence. The second that bomb bay opens, the "invisible" F-35 has the RCS of a Strike Eagle which means that it would get an E-37M up its butt. The Russians also have IR-guided LAAMs which would easily spot the P&W F135's gigantic exhaust plume. There is no "clean win" scenario for the F-35 and, considering the huge difference in manufacturing cost, Russia would happily trade one Su-35 for every F-35 downed because that's a financial victory for them. I have no belief that it costs more to build ANY Sukhoi than it costs to build any variant of the F-35.
The doctrine differences are significant, Su-35 is clearly still based around the concept of close target engagement whereas western concepts are based around medium to long range engagement and network centric warfare. The average AMRAAM missile doesn't give much of a rip about the Su-35 having a bigger gun or thrust vectoring as it comes barrelling in at mach 4 from 80nm away. You can ask the Serbian air force how well supermaneuverability served their pilots during BVR engagements. At closer ranges those two enormously hot engines are an ideal target for the latest generation of sidewinder missiles which have significantly improved in their maneuverability compared to the older AIM-L/M variants. Basically it's touting your skill to fire an uzi when you are fighting an enemy that has carbines and sniper rifles.
Why not just strap these AMRAAMs to a much cheaper Cessna 152. We are talking about air superiority fighters and not the payload's capability. Besides TWO hot engines is not much more of a heat signature than a single hot engine...its how you program the missile to recognize the heat signature, heck they can even lock onto heat being reflected by the sun through the fuselage
serbs didnt have awacs support , nor they had the best equiped variants in terms of electronic warfare(jaming), nor they could afford to atack in packs of over 20 aircrafts group and fire multiple missiles at a single target. So your example is irelevant. Same applies in Iraq.

First shot is a huge advantage and that should always go to the F35 due to its stealth. The SU35 manoeuvrability only becomes critical in a close, visual encounter, which should not occur if the first-shot missile does its job in a 1 on 1 engagement. If it does become a fight the visual envelope then it will come down to pilot tactics. Therefore, missile quality on the F35 and the Defensive Aids of the SU35 are key to the fight.
The F-35 would never engage visually with the Sukhoi. They should be able to identify the type of aircraft they are targeting. They possibly might after gaining a significant numerical superiority.
And training. Russia has basically zero combat training available. If you look at what they get it's almost criminal. It actually probably is criminal as the generals are no doubt selling aviation fuel and pocketing the money.
@@damianketcham yeah, flight Time available on the F35 is very low compared to any other aircraft... So the USA should triple their F35 aircraft number. They might just do that ... Only the Russian F35 is worth keeping, i mean the US Marine VTOL F35 which VTOL system is originaly russian designed. It is worth keeping this version as it is far less complex than the Harrier. Pity that there is the US software part.
I would assume dogfighting depends on the quality of the pilot. Given recent events im not sure id place a large wager that russia is full of well trained active duty fighter aces.
I recently watched a video about Baron Manfred von Richthofen, the top scoring WWI fighter ace. Most of his kills were not in dogfights, nor was that his preferred method of killing. Most were attacking unsuspecting targets. This is the philosophy of the F35. And, by the way, the price of the SU35 and the F35A are not very different. Then there’s the question of numbers. There are a whole lot more F35’s than SU35’s and this will continue to be true; in fact, the balance is likely to tilt more. From what I know of Russian numbers, it will take Russia until 2027 to have enough SU35’s and Su57’s combined to roughly equal American F22 inventory., which is to say a little under 200 fighters. This completely ignores F35 inventory which is already over double that. If SU35’s face F35’s it will not be at a 1:1 ratio. Nor will it even have to be greater than 1:1 in stealth fighters because of American airborne data sharing as an F35’s data can provide firing coordinates for F15’s and F16’s beyond Russian radar range.
This is the philosophy of all modern jets. Close combat is quite obsolete with modern medium-long range missiles. It's more elecronic warfare than anything.
Current F35 production rate is one plane every two work days. There is not even a theoretical chance the russia can match this. See dear putin, PhotShop weapons don't win real wars; good for fans, but nothing else. For those unfamiliar with Ukraine: the ground is thawing and huge convoy is limited ONLY to paved roads. Blow first few vehicles and everything stands still. Sitting ducks for Ukrainians. I found that they have flooded the fields as well. Running out of fuel and even food. By far the worst part is exposing to the world just how hugely incompetent they are.
The two aircrafts have nothing in common but the number. They are totally diffrent fields. F35 A multirole fight/attack aircraft, SU35 a swing role air superiority
And Russia doesn’t have enough su35s to keep up. And it doesn’t have enough spare parts to keep them in the air in a war with the USA. They would have to rely on China to make parts at a relatively high rate. But we would bomb those plants We see it now with them in Ukraine.
@@davelowesky8054 Well .. Russia don´t have enough of anything. Specially not pilot. They having 1000 fighters sounds very impressive... Until you realize that they really just have 200-300 pilots with sufficient hours

Intel, communication and coordination are the great assets of the US military. Even the Western Europeans could trash this Russian air force. There are a lot of jokes about how few jets are actually airworthy, but therefore these numbers are correct and can be buckled up if needed. Actually, the press is often over exaggerating these numbers.

Well, these birds can still face each other without devastating WW3. Two other countries which bought the planes from US and Russia can clash in some local war... But the outcome would much depend on the well prepared pilots too...
I agree with you 100%. It all depends on the experience and expertise of the pilots. Obviously, both planes are extremely dangerous but the one with the best pilot, would end up being the best plane.
At close range, at long range its a complete embarrassment. The f35 will be a silent killer, while the next 6th gen Airforce/Navy planes will annihilate Russian aircrafts close or long range.
Read about PLAAF exercises against Royal Thai Air Force, Falcon Strike. A Chinese test pilot said that because of the RTAF Gripen low RCS and longer reach AIM-120, the Su-27SK got killed 44 to 2 in BVR, but was opposite in WVR against the under-powered Gripen, and had the helmet-cued R-73 or Chinese copy of the Python-3. Then they sent J-10s down to even out the odds, especially the later J-10C with DSI inlet and really low RCS, with much longer range PL-15 BVRAAM. PLAAF also did internal tactical exploitation of all its fighters against each other and even the Su-35S did not fair well against the J-10C. Why? Lower RCS and AESA in J-10C equals first-look. PL-15 equals first-shoot. F-35 has a lower RCS 3 decimal places lower than J-10C, a bigger, superior AESA, and IR stealth. So no matter the distance, the F-35 is superior to any Flanker variant, and there isn’t anything you can do to change that.
Limited supply of the actual Tiger tanks was problematic - fewer than 500 MKIIs and circa 1350 Tiger 'E' were made, a lot due to bombing raids destroying production and raw material shortage, however using much larger tanks in conditions not ideally suited and reduced range of the tank was a huge factor rather than just being outnumbered. A Tiger II could barely muster a 100 miles, A sherman could reach about 150 miles, the Cromwell was closer to 170miles on tarmac'd roads, the Cromwell was also much faster than both the Tiger's and the Sherman and had a similar engine output of 600hp to the Tiger, the Sherman was around 400hp.
Times have changed. The f35 and f22 can kill multiple f15s and 16s in no escape zone type positioning and launch energy without them knowing where they are.. the su35 has no chance. When 3 or 4 ..f15s and f16sat a time can consistently take down f35, then i can be comvinced that the su35 or rafale or whatever gen4+ has a chance.
Something else to consider in the same vein as the Shermans/T-34/Tiger experience in WWII, is that fact the F22 and F35 are maintenance queens. They require expensive repair work after every flight, especially to their stealth coatings. You can make the assumption that in a war with a peer power, like Russia, your ability to maintain these jets will be removed at the outset of hostilities, as well as the runways to land and take off. The jets may be "invisible" to radar, but the airbases are certainly not invisible. With their exact coordinates already dailed into short range weapons. Best if your plane is able to operate off a highway or a backroad when ballistic missiles destroy airbases on mass. It is believed the Russians have engineered this ruggedness into their Flanker and Mig warplanes.
The resin the us and NATO is always at war is to keep there militry alliance " Sharp and battle ready"... unlike China and Russia who practice with each other without any real danger of being attacked and killed... it's one thing marching in red square and the forbidden city and another going to war with a real enamy who's seriously going to kill you...the way Putin is going it won't be long before thay find out!!!.🤔

In a case of possible conflict rusia will have gotten lost the vast of its air force just within hours. The entire cohesion of rusian military units in large-scale combat operations is just bad, so for any intangible success they always pay with their own huge death toll.

@@BipolarAyatollah - The main objective of the F35 was to dismantle the F16's in the future. What is the main objective of the F16's? dog fighting. Yes, the F35 can perform other capabilities. Imagine being hit by weaponry from an unknown, unseen and unidentified aircraft from hundreds of miles away. Talk about being helpless! F-35 for the win!
The F-35 though has to make that stealth BVR (Beyond Visual Range) kill. If it gets into a "turning dogfight" with a competent pilot of a modern Russian or Chinese aircraf there are limitations in its flight envelope that could be exploited. The benefit that F-35 operators have is the training to mitigate those short comings and exploit shortcomings of their adversary. This isn't something that seems to be as well worked out in the Russian forces.
@@tommygun5038 this same argument was used in the late 50s and early 60s l, so the F-4 was built without an internal gun. Then Vietnam showed that even with missiles, there was a need for guns in a turning dogfight. The truth is that since Vietnam there hasn't been an true air war of equal combatants. As such to say the days of dogfighting is over are myopic at best. There is a reason the F-35 has an internal gun and it isn't just strafing in a CAS role. The truth is that if it is in a full stealth set up it only carries four missiles and could quickly wind up in a guns engagement for survival.
So basically f 35 vs Su 35 is like a sniper rifle vs an ak 47. A sniper stays hidden and kills the target from far away. An ak 47 sprays bullets all over the place in close to medium range to completely decimate the enemy. Which one wins depends on the scenario.

Avoiding sight contact with a defender by pre-elimination with further reaching ordinance is an ancient and well proven technique.
Definitely favored in prolonging the lives of Pilots and aircraft.
@Jesus is coming. Read the Gospel. you internet christ cucks are really off-putting

Excellent points all.
Su35- 4gen
f35- 5gen
this could have ended
comparison is incorrect

Su-35 had it's first flight in 1988.
At this point, the question is: which one would take off and not explode during cruise? And we all know the answer...
What's the answer?
First shot is a huge advantage and that should always go to the F35 due to its stealth. The SU35 manoeuvrability only becomes critical in a close, visual encounter, which should not occur if the first-shot missile does its job in a 1 on 1 engagement. If it does become a fight the visual envelope then it will come down to pilot tactics. Therefore, missile quality on the F35 and the Defensive Aids of the SU35 are key to the fight.
Yeah an F-35 equipped with a Python-5 fox-2 would be one hell of dog fight to for any opp

Because of the F-35's stealth it will get a first shot first kill.

But we would bomb those plants
We see it now with them in Ukraine.

We train to handle visual merges but only because it’s is always a dangerous contingency-that an enemy leaker gets too close to a friendly asset, generally by their own luck plus a massive OCA failure.
We won’t even accept that merge, and will instead separate, unless we can bring a 2:1 advantage, again, unless we get anchored and cannot first escape. Dog fights are not in the game plan. Ever. Not under ANY circumstance. If they do occur, and against a competent opponent they probably will, the pilot(s) involved are presumed guilty of a massive F-up until they prove their innocence.
Reminds me of the Tiger tanks against the Shermans. It was quality against quantity and in that case quantity won. Do not forget History.

@@Toronto-Brad yup f-35 and f22 canot win anything if they canot be in ready operational status ! thats a great point for the russians jets
Comparing the f35 to the su35 is unfair because the f35 is like one of 3 5th gen fighters in the world
Should not really be compared to SU-57 either because Russia will never have them in meaningful numbers.

SU-35 is an air to air fighter and the F-35 is an air to ground fighter, shouldn’t be pitting the two together. F-22 would be a more appropriate comparison, and the SU wouldn’t stand a chance.

Those Russian jets are just so damn pretty! Deadly also!! The F35 just screams business though!! All Russian and US hardware is well tested and deadly. It comes down to operator usually when using high tech systems. Just my opinion though.
F35 would dominate. It would kill the SU35 before it knew it was there. Before you say biased I am not American and actually really like the Russian jets.
You should consider F35 not as a war aircraft on its own but as an integral strike unit incorporated into the entire complex of military forces it belongs to. In a case of possible conflict rusia will have gotten lost the vast of its air force just within hours. The entire cohesion of rusian military units in large-scale combat operations is just bad, so for any intangible success they always pay with their own huge death toll.
MSM5500 I agree, it’s a flying supercomputer with the ability to share info between aircraft and have a perfectly coordinated strike without many issues. However I’m absolutely sure it could hold it’s own by itself
@@dt2419, Yes sure, without a doubd F35 is very capable on its own but unlike rusia the US as well as NATO command will never put any their aircraft into a situation where risk assesment hasn't been done yet. What makes the differences is all about pilot skills!
An air-to-air missile isn't going to be impressed by flips and twirls by the SU-35. Dog fighting is nearly dead. Though it may happen once in a great while, designing your entire aircraft around it is a mistake.
Thing is the SU-35 was not created for dog fighting, that is the Mig35. Su035 mainly objective is a bomber, unlike the F35 that is mainly objective is dog fight.
@@vrrc7686 Nope. The F35 is not a dog fighter. It kills before a dogfight has a chance to develop. It can perform air to air combat, but it has other capabilities as well.
The F35 is a multirole combat aircraft intended to perform both air superiority and strike missions it’s also used for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and electronic warfare. In a real air simulated battle they pitted six F22 Raptors against one F35 Lightning II, and yes the F35 took out all six Raptors before the F22 pilots even knew where the F35 was!
It's all a question of what you are up to. If you are expecting enemies other than american F35 then the russian approach might hold true. Right now they are fighting Ukraine and they have jets of russian origin as well.
@@BipolarAyatollah - The main objective of the F35 was to dismantle the F16's in the future. What is the main objective of the F16's? dog fighting. Yes, the F35 can perform other capabilities. I loved SU35 the more though they are all strong and adorable
This is the first time I've ever heard fighter jets described that way
But yes, *they are absolutely cute.*
if you put the missiles on an F 35 outside it diminishes its stealth performance
That's why the missiles are folded away inside its body
there are also non stealthy missions
Why is this a comparison between two jets from different generations? Want a fair match then talk about Su 57.
If and when goes into production and if they manage to make engines then we will talk. Besides the 57 has visible rivets, meaning zero stealth
the last words of the SU35 pilot... "what is that flash....?" Because Russia did so well in Ukraine of course.

@@ParkerUAS Yea...they are more bark than bite...just look at the primitive tech and laziness and cutting of corners of Chernobyl.
What is the range of the F-35 missiles?
@@ParkerUAS .....The dogfighting days have long been over. F35s don't need to be behind their opponent too fire missiles.
But. STH Korean Soldiers are taught to snipe up to 300 m with an ak47 in single shot. And can hit a cigarette at 250 m.
