Don't know how you managed to explain all that in 6 minutes and made it all make sound straight forward and understandable. Very impressed and great video :)
Or just game streaming from some profile would be the easiest. But this would be better to have all your own configs & stuff. We're getting very close to that reality.
Side note, your production quality, editing style, sound design, camera work, staging, etc. is top tier. It's incredibly smart to start your channel out this way. I truly expect your channel to climb the ranks incredible fast. Excellent strategy!!
Fun little experiment! Now that Oculink is here, I can't wait for that to be the standard. With a much more affordable card your setup makes sense, but all that power being left on the table because of the connection hurts. Seeing the screen on through the closed case is nice to look at though!
@@BeyondtheBox1an open sourced format of thunderbolt 4. Many of the mini pc are adopting to that video port format to run docks for egpu. I’m also interested and curious to see how it will develop.
The dream for me would be an e-gpu to connect a handheld or laptop that gives it desktop-like performance. That way you still have the mobility of a portable device for trips and the power of a desktop when you're home. Really hoping that e-gpu tech can reach that point in the next handful of years.
When I use my Ally X with Razer Core X, I simply set my display to be “second screen only”. Doesn’t route back to the main display. Using a 3070 and it’s great.
@@EricVicente-ez2xlI probably don’t play most games that others do. That said every game I’ve played I’ve been able to max out settings and get 70-140fps. Minecraft, Planet Crafter, Star Trek Online, Aion, etc.

Seems like we're so close to a first party solution like this that is somewhat reasonably priced. I think as the handheld market gets more competitive we'll see more products in the eGPU space.
Yeah, especially once TB5 gets released. For the next Ally I would either like: 1) Oculink 2) TB port with the XG mobile support back. Those who bought it I feel got a bit screwed over honestly. 3) Keep the ports as they are now and just add an Oculink port.
Seems like the Lenovo Legion Go would remedy your power issue. Plug one of the Go's USB4 ports into a 100W PD dock, and the other USB4 port to the eGPU. That should keep the charge up while you play docked.
would be cool to use this in a more realistic setup with a 3d printed housing/stand that holds the GPU and Usb Hub to make it function like a supercharge switch.
They have an egpu all in one dock. Onexgpu, plus several others. The gpu is just a lot lower spec than the 4090. They are running 7600m xt and the 7800m xt. The latter is in the onexgpu 2.
Great video, this is the fastest USB4 connection I've seen! A whopping 50% faster than ETA-Prime's video on the same set-up using an Ally X + 4090, much love for his content but it's refreshing when content creators like you do their homework.
Stream through steam using your pc, and it's portable. You can use the lowest watts and it maximizes your batt to like 7hrs+ on a steamdeck, so probably more on a rog ally x.
I used a 7900XTX and it worked well, but I had to reinstall drivers for the iGPU whenever I wasn’t using the 7900XTX. A little bit of a pain. But I was playing Cyberpunk in 4k pretty well.
So my kids got me into gaming. originally with a costco laptop that had a 3060. But I need more portability, as I transition into vanlife/rv life to travel and see stuff now that I got the time. So they got me an rog ally x? i need something that can do it all. watch 4k movies, and browse the web, download photos from my s24, or videos, and edit them (I need to find a simple easy to learn method hahaha), I want to run music off it as I converted my massive cd collection into mp3s. But they also got me 2 go pros, a drone, from costco to learn. But theyve gotten me into many games, metal gear solid collection, resident evil, all very fun and engrossing stories, like interactive movies!!!! I thought video games were pointless! Until I experienced them myself during pandem lock downs haha.
Can snag a used 6800XT for $400 or less and that would be perfect for this application imo. Has sufficient vram and is quite powerful to play everything at 1440-4k.
So if I used a 4060 instead of a 4090 is everything he did in the video still be the same besides the rtx 4060 that I plan on using because I want to do the same build
This kind of reminds me of the laptops where you could connect it to a GPU for a athome station. If this can be improved further with scripts that allow you to use it kind of like a switch. Just like you said, it would honestly be insane
Been thinking of a similar concept! Maybe like a 7800xt (Or just any amd) on linux because amd is superior on linux. I know Nvidia still has issues even in gamescope. AMD EGPU on Bazzite would make for an awesome video
I have similar setup ie using Ally X with UT3G but paired with 4070 Super. Can play Forza horizon 5 4K max settings (ultra/extreme and RT) with DLSS set to quality and get avg 100fps. The graphics fidelity is mind blowing viewed on my 27 inch 4K 165Hz miniled tv with 1156 local dimming zones
Unfortunately TB5 will be the same bandwidth as oculink, possibly even less due to controller overhead. Those 120gbit modes are single direction, meaning only writing or reading, not both, will get those speeds. Still, the plug and play nature of it will make it a fantastic value add to the ecosystem.
5:48 Nvidia is a big headache on linux. Gamescope, the video compositor that SteamOS and mimics of it like Bazzite or ChimeraOS use, does not work on Nvidia. You might have better luck using an AMD card for that
This was great, the case and everything. Obviously it would need to be cleaned up to be realistic in the since of a desk or living room set up BUT great start. You have a sub from me, would like to see how clean you can make this, give it that switch dock treatment of just drop it in and play, pull it out and be on the go.
4:08 i don’t think that will take any bandwidth your ultimately bottlenecked by the thunderbolt 4 spec I don’t think it will net any performance gain nor does disabling the igpu also net any gain
As I understood it: Thunderbolt 4 is the bottleneck? So a Thunderbolt 5 version, that we saw on the new MacBook Pros for example, cold fix this? If I am not mistaken that is 120GB/s instead of 40.
Would love to see a followup to this directly comparing the results with say a 4070, 3080, etc. because I'm wondering if the framerates will be almost identical Like how big is the bottleneck here, really?
One day the APU will replace the GPU and CPU and will be just as powerful and the system RAM will be on the APU ... one chip to power it all super efficiently and with low power consumption. We're just in the first few generations of the APU. Just wait, give it about 15 more years.. this was really cool to watch. Really good idea.
I wonder would this setup work better if you used the m.2 slot instead of running it Pcie through the usb c thunderbolts connection. Like would it be possible to use one of those m.2 setuls then just use a portable usb drive for the storage??
Well its going to be better than the integrated GPU since you will have all the RAM available and the VRAM from the external GPU is going to make it a bit better
Thanks for amazing content. Please help: Is it good idea to get 4070 and razer x chroma for ally x? I mean will setup worth that money? Thank you and cheers :D
I’m a little curious why did you pick a handheld without Oculink (the much faster cable to reduce bottlenecks)? And why choose a dock that might only have thunderbolt 4 instead of usb 4? In case you don’t understand, real world gaming tests have proven usb 4 to be superior for eGPU use. Maybe a little more research was needed?
Bro the blue screen with egpu was purely bitlocker locking down the system cause it sensed something different with the system you just had to remove bitlocker Since then Asus updated it to not have that issue

Depends on the resolution you're playing at. At 4k you probably wouldn't be bottlenecking with the apu honestly
Broooooo😂
Doesn’t it go up to 80w? Lol
To be fair when plugged in can go up to something like 45w sustained, which isn’t a far cry from some modern ryzen desktop cpus that run at 65w
😂😂😂😂
Your video quality and production are incredible - keep it up bro. I can see this channel hitting 1M within a few years for sure.
I love this. if someone only has the ally X and then if you're at home. this is a great idea. knowing that it'll actually work
