Thank you, Russ, for being about the only one remarking on the issue with the ergonomics. I have been struggling since day one with this device and ended up returning it due to major pain it caused in my pinky/ring fingers and wrists. I think the device isn’t balanced well and is way too heavy at the bottom on the unit which is why it caused me pain. I tried many different grips to no avail. It’s a real bummer too because this device does everything I want it to. I have zero issues with my Steam Deck OLED, however. Some devices just fit differently I guess. Glad you found some grips that work well. Keep up all the great work!
The one thing I wish they could do with these handhelds and I'm assuming there's a good reason nobody has is having a detachable battery so you could just switch to another when it dies, just have like a tiny internal one that can keep the system on long enough to switch.

I think these handheld PCs are amazing. I just can't justify one right now. And it will feel like a big upgrade since u are use to a switch like I was. Pull the trigger 😂
Great video Russ! I know you used the original ROG ally as a desktop computer with their proprietary eGPU. Are you doing the same with this? My end game pc is a handheld that I can dual boot Bazzite and Windows that I can dock at my desk if I want a more powerful gaming experience but also completely replace my need for a desktop that can do some light web browsing, home lab tinkering and other light weight tasks. I’d love a video showing a ROG Ally X being a full desktop replacement with a thunderbolt 4 eGPU.
Of all the consoles I've bought, the Ally X has had by far the most impact. Does everything I wanted with respect to emulation and PC games, but does so much more too.
Personally I find the feel and fit of the Ally X without a grip just perfect. Love the weight as well. Feels much better than the Ally non-X and Deck OLED I had before. I now have the Dbrand Killswitch on my Ally X and also love the feel of it as well as the added protection from it. I'm glad DBrand didn't make it more bulbous as the current grip already feels great, for me. Only thing I notice a bit more now is the added weight but it has not been enough to deter me from playing hours on end with the Ally and still not feeling hand fatigue.
Mechanism has created an adapter for the Ally X Killswitch case, but it's not as straightforward as the Steam Deck adapter. You need to remove the pin holding the kickstand on and replace it with one that has the Mechanism interface. It's also only available as a 3D printed piece.
One thing that's not really mentioned regarding the Killswitch vs the Modcase is that the Killswitch + cover is noticeably lighter than the Modcase. I wouldn't even consider these 2 to be at the same level qualitywise. The Killswitch is better than the Modcase in every way and I don't consider the modular attachment of the Modcase to be an advantage considering the weight of the Ally X. Believe me, you don't want to hang heavy powerbanks under the Ally X cuz the combined weight and bulk guarantees really short gaming sessions. If I even run out of battery on the Ally X I have a nice soft and supple Anker USB-C cable that's long enough to go from the Ally X to a powerbank in my back pocket.
The negative thing about dbrand Killswitches on the Steam Deck Killswitch V2 and the ROG Ally X KIllswitch is that since they have a huge lump at the back they aren't carrying case friendly. I'd rather have the Killswitch + Carrying Case than a Travel Case from dbrand.
You definitely make the Ally X look enticing. Ive been holding off since i havent really played anything that's maxed out my Oled Deck. But i do plan to get the X eventually. Sidenote, i bought that Mechanism pillow after your prior review video of it and i love it! Holding the Deck feels more like holding a comfortable lighter weight handheld with that pillow arm supporting from underneath.
One thing to note, the ROG ALLY has been seen discounted down to $375 at Sam's Club a couple times already so look out for that if looking to save money, the differences with the new X model are there but are not really worth the extra $325.
This convinced me to get a future Rog Ally if it ever comes out in Oled. In the meantime I’m ok with my Steam Deck but so far dualboot setup dor Rog Ally looks pretty cool.
Man, I would be very greatful if you could make a video of controller options for the Ally x that would allow me to use the command center buttons. I have tried a series X controller now I have a 8bitdo ultimate with the same issue. I know a lot of people are trying to figure this out as well since it really kills to docked mode when you have to get up to change settings or to force close a game etc. Thanks for reading, I hope this is something you would be willing to follow up and and help the community out with!
I might have to consider the grip for the Ally. I purchased one used that included the killswitch, but it doesn’t improve the depth of the grip like I thought it would. That leather case looks slick as well, although a bit out of my current budget
Thanks for the video, Russ! I bought the same 4TB SSD and dual partitioned it following your guide. I just left 1TB for Windows (barely use it as its really awkward on a handheld device) and assigned 3TB to Bazzite. Also threw my old 1TB micro sd card in for emulation. Worked out very well. I got JSAUX case and although the alignment is a bit off on the top ports it works well and looks good for its price. I will look into installing Windows button in SteamOS. That seems very convenient. Do you get Bazzite text popups when you boot the machine?
Hey Russ, would you consider doing a review on the GameSir tarantula controller? It looks really neat, just would love to see someone i trust do a real in depth review.
Hey Russ! Just wondering when you're going to do a review on the Ayn Odin 2 portal? I was going to pick up the Odin 2 for Christmas and now I'm unsure as the OLED screen is peaking my interest. I really just want to know if there are any major differences that would sway me to one or the other and there's no youtuber out there that reviews like you do.
I'd consider Bazite if there was a Windows 10 variant. I cannot stand Windows 11, also did the 4TB upgrade, but upgraded the OS to Windows 10. Got a 1.5TB Micro SD card.
I purchased the comfort grips on Etsy for my original ROG Ally. After a few months the locking clip broke off of one of the grips, rendering it non-functional. Hopefully they've updated the materials to make that locking clip more durable.
Algun día tambien deberias de hacer una demostracion de escritorio, recomendando estaciones de acoplamientos o bases. Lo que me interesa mas de la asus es que puedes conectarle una EGPU que puede reducir mucho el valor de la EGPU de la misma empresa.
Why don't you partition the 4TB SSD so that you have a small amount of native file system for both of the OSs and then the remainder - i.e. most of the 4TB - formatted in a format that both Linix and Windows can read/write? Then you put your Steam library on there and let both OSs run their games from that point. You'll cut down duplication and make more room available for more games.
I love your channel been watching you for years. You should review the viture XR pro glasses they are perfect for a handheld gaming device I think you might like it
As an Australian, now that the steam deck is officially released, i’m having a hard time justifying the $600 extra cost of the Ally X compared to the deck…
@@Zedisdeadbaby666 Time consolidation. Not every game (I'd argue most games) needs your full attention, so it's a good way to get the game in and catch up on a show or movie or youtube or what have you. Great video and very informative, thank you for sharing it as it helped me to choose the right grips for my new Ally X. I also have a question as I mainly use it with Windows,is it recommended to use the battery care mode in the Asus options if I keep it plugged in the outlet?
I love the Rog Ally X (as an Rog Ally owner) but problem that I have is the release date of it. The Z2 extreme chips are set to be released next year and I'll be selling my ROG Ally for the actual new chips in a few months. Ally 2 I suppose. Hopefully they carry over battery capacity
IMMEDIATELY bought the grips. I'll dual boot eventually since I have 2 TBs left over and I also have a 1.5tb micro SD, but I went straight to Etsy and ordered the comfort size with tactile feedback in black.
It's funny because I am the complete opposite haha. I also have medium sized hands but I just find my steam deck to be uncomfortable but love the feel of my original ally. Even that fluster in the stomach is opposite for me 😂
I got the LCD deck and my mane gripe is the grips too. Its too damn heavy and the grips are too small for me to let me use it comfortably. My hands arent even that large, I just dislike using the thing due to the weight distribution. And given the device's lack of 3d horse power I ended mostly streaming to it from my beefy PC anyway, so I quickly realized I may aswell get a lighter device to stream my PC games too. The RG556 has scratched that itch so far, although the controls feel faaaarrr less premium. Trade offs everywhere!!!
with my first rog i cut off the grips on killswitch and add 3dprint grips. so i got good grips with a stand. it works perfect. thinking about doing the same on my X
Curious which emulators you use on ROG Ally X. Do you use emudeck through bazzite, or install emulators on Windows. I recall you mentioned Linux so likely retroarch for Linux and a few other standalone
@@fresco_dinero5155 This was about cases where at best ASUS were not honoring device warranties and at worst holding customers' devices until they paid some shipment or repair fee. The company claims to have revised their RMA process, and since then there hasn't been any damning reports. Otherwise the Ally X is probably the best engineered Windows handheld to date.
@@fresco_dinero5155Almost every company has screwed up customers at one point or another, some more than others. The best is to wait 6 months to see any problem a specific product has.

So are your shared SD cards formatted differently than the usual? SteamOS expects ext4 formatted cards which won't work with Windows out of the box, correct? Did you use exFAT? Commenting early in the vid so please ignore if you already address this
I formatted to exFAT and set it up on the Windows side first, and was surprised to find that Bazzite recognized it when I logged in the next time. There are other ways to go about it, like BTRFS, but the exFAT method worked for me. I think the trick was setting it up in Windows first!
I can't buy this handheld, if i was buying it with my money. If it was given to me then yes i would talk about this handheld with happiness. I have the first ROG Ally. These handhelds are expensive. I love them putting out these handhelds this fast, but they have to understand you wont get your loyal buyers to buy them everytime they bring one out. Anbernic do this alot, some i will buy and some i won't. Thank you, for the video, Russ!
I wonder if you have a BTRfs driver installed, because that should allow you to mount your linux volume directly within windows automatically, so you can play the games on the linux side from windows, and vice versa, so you're only storing the games on linux side, and the windows partiton can be something like 240-500GB, just enough to store windows itself.
It's $100 off right now for Black Friday. I know it's still expensive but for those highly interested, it's the best time to get one.

Algun día tambien deberias de hacer una demostracion de escritorio, recomendando estaciones de acoplamientos o bases. Lo que me interesa mas de la asus es que puedes conectarle una EGPU que puede reducir mucho el valor de la EGPU de la misma empresa.
whole ass doohickey over here , all it needs is a worm light and a screen magnifier and we're in peak game boy era again
Haha yeah Gameboy was immediately my first thought.
Happy Gaming to everyone🎉
Why don't you partition the 4TB SSD so that you have a small amount of native file system for both of the OSs and then the remainder - i.e. most of the 4TB - formatted in a format that both Linix and Windows can read/write? Then you put your Steam library on there and let both OSs run their games from that point. You'll cut down duplication and make more room available for more games.
Watching a movie while playing a game thats the life
Russ is a saint and a scholar.
And an army man
I love your channel been watching you for years. You should review the viture XR pro glasses they are perfect for a handheld gaming device I think you might like it
As an Australian, now that the steam deck is officially released, i’m having a hard time justifying the $600 extra cost of the Ally X compared to the deck…
[A→B] Life is an incredible album.
"Watch movies on your phone while you game"...
I'll never understand that.
@@Zedisdeadbaby666 Time consolidation. Not every game (I'd argue most games) needs your full attention, so it's a good way to get the game in and catch up on a show or movie or youtube or what have you. If I'm doing a dungeon in a JRPG, I don't need to be locked in while I'm solving rudimentary puzzles and fighting mobs.
Stick a phone stand and place your phone in that. You can watch movies , play games
Great video and very informative, thank you for sharing it as it helped me to choose the right grips for my new Ally X.
I also have a question as I mainly use it with Windows,is it recommended to use the battery care mode in the Asus options if I keep it plugged in the outlet?
16:57 this could be awesome for 3DS emulation if there was a way to use the phone as another screen
A $23 piece of plastic was what pushed me over the edge more times than I can remember, had an incline Russ was a dirty boy
So temped by the Ally X.... Just want to wait till the next generation of CPUs for a major performance boost...
It's funny because I am the complete opposite haha. I also have medium sized hands but I just find my steam deck to be uncomfortable but love the feel of my original ally. Even that fluster in the stomach is opposite for me 😂
What I really want to know is if the Ally X with comfort grips will fit inside the Ally X Premium Hard Case
Question, will you be having a look at the Zotac Zone handheld? It looks really interesting.
I think I will get the Ally X2 if/when that becomes a thing.
You know Asus nailed it this time when the biggest complaint is that the back grips are too small.
£15.32 delivery here in the UK, I would love to buy but man that is dealbreaker
I got the LCD deck and my mane gripe is the grips too. Its too damn heavy and the grips are too small for me to let me use it comfortably. My hands arent even that large, I just dislike using the thing due to the weight distribution. And given the device's lack of 3d horse power I ended mostly streaming to it from my beefy PC anyway, so I quickly realized I may aswell get a lighter device to stream my PC games too. The RG556 has scratched that itch so far, although the controls feel faaaarrr less premium. Trade offs everywhere!!!
I'm just miffed they made the mod case for the original ally without that attachment at the back. Not gonna double dip for the X.
with my first rog i cut off the grips on killswitch and add 3dprint grips. so i got good grips with a stand. it works perfect. thinking about doing the same on my X
Curious which emulators you use on ROG Ally X. Do you use emudeck through bazzite, or install emulators on Windows. I recall you mentioned Linux so likely retroarch for Linux and a few other standalone
6:58 JSAUX have stated on their official Twitter account that their brand name is pronounced *"JAY-socks"* and not "JAY-saw" (or "JAY-so")
I'll wait about 15 years before I get the pillow, you look like me after my 3rd stroke
Great video 🙂
A truly perfect Ally X would be one not made by ASUS, but I guess this works too.
Why does the company matter. Sounds like ur just following the crowd
@@fresco_dinero5155why does the company that creates and is supposed to warrant and support the product you buy matter? What a stupid question. It may not matter for a shitty $50 Chinese handheld but $800 is a ton of money. But I’m guessing you’re just someone who buys anything if it looks shiny.
Hi, your videos helps a lot! I wanted to know which pc handhelds have th best d-pad and buttons and which one I should avoid in your opinion.
nice watch!
They make them so fast, as soon as you learn the first one then the next one is here.
Skull & Co case not bad too
Oh boy, I'm here for it. I absolutely love the ALLY X .
