Crazy as this sounds, I made a how to because this was learning experience for us. Only had the knob/dial style before. There are many steps for changing to/from h2 to h4. Hope this helps.

Nice Video, I guess it wont hurt saying this for anyone watching in the future. Anytime you go in or out of 4L the transmission selector should always be in Neutral, if not you'll hear the gears in the transfer case grind. Additionally, 4L should be cycled every so often maybe every 1-2 months, this is so that the linkage does not get seized. Do not drive in 4L on pavement or normal road traffic as the speed range is too low and the drivetrain gets bound up due to the center differential locking 50/50 front to rear, causing wheels to chatter and possible breakage of the front CV Axles. It's also smart to cycle the RR Diff Lock when cycling the 4L as the actuator in the rear diff can get seized. This truck very much follows the philosophy of 'use it or lose it".
For sure very good info to pass along to everyone!!!! Lol that grinding is what made my wife call me in panic “what the hell do I do!!” Again to the 2021 owners the instructions just look up, are right on the driver visor
How do you cycle the 4L?
Use it or lose it in a 2021 Toyota 4 x 4? I don’t think so.
What I did not see what was the tires. I have just standard driving tires. Do I need to replace them with an all terrian tire?
nah tires are independent of the off roading goodies like crawl control and 4l/4h, I mean don't get me wrong. The correct set of tires plus those features are amazing but you don't necessarily need a "good tire" to activate those features.@@user-qi2ik6wf9v
Really appreciate the old school manual shift transfer case. Its definitely becoming a thing of the past.
Off topic, your neighborhood during Christmas season must look amazing.
Secondly, thank you. I needed this video.
Awesome glad it helped!! Snow was pretty but since moving to FL I kinda like the sand more !
Thank you, as a 4Runner rookie your video made clear to me on the How-To's. Much appreciated!!
Its important to tell people the 4 wheel shifter needs to be agressively moved. Its not a toy but a piece of equipment.
Nice video
Very true. Don’t be afraid. Grip it and rip it!!
Thank you for this, bought this same vehicle recently and had with no clue how to use my 4WD at the beach , this saved me !
Same here. I put it into 4L in error and couldn't get it out and yes panic set in. Thank you! I'm glad I don't have to stop to change between H2 and H4 though!
Probably should add, although it's not recommended to run 4Hi on dry pavement full time at full speed, it's ok to do it for a short time at low speed to make sure nothing seizes as part of maintenance. Usually an easy drive around the block will suffice to make the 4Hi system happy, then you can shift back to 2Hi.
From the comments, they make it sound like you must drive to a dirt road to do your monthly or so of cycling the drivetrain so it can slip, but that's not the case. Because that wouldn't be convenient for sunny city folks.
Same goes for 4Lo. Just go through the proper shift to 4Lo and literally crawl at 3mph for a few yards to get the 4Lo system happy, then go through the process to shift back to 2Hi and drive like normal.
thank you. it did help me to see someone actually change the gears vs. just talk about it. i have the 2020 and I've been afraid to change the gear because I wasn't sure. so, thanks again.
Awesome glad it helped! Great vehicles they make em tough, grab the shifter and go for it!!! Keep pressure to the left side you be just fine.
Thanks for this! I just rented a 4Runner, and thought "oh shit" when I saw the unfamiliar transmission system. This was helpful.
Hello!! Your video just saved us getting back out of Low 4!!! I was grinding gears and was all confused. Thanks so much
Awesome!!!! Glad it helped….been there!!!!
Thanks for the tutorial. I rented this car in Vernon today and driving in the snow I didn’t know how to use the detector knob…. Now I know!
Me too!!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I had no idea about the instructions over the visor. Very instructional for a single 60 yr old.
Awesome glad to help. Enjoy the vehicle they are fun to drive!!
Thank you! I just got a 4Runner TRD and was not sure since auto dealership did not explain!
Glad to help. I’ve heard that often the dealers are providing very little information on their own products.
Thanks for your short video. It definitely help explain in simple terms, on how to use 4WD on my Toyota 4Runner. 👍
Awesome good to hear it helped !!
To clarify for anyone .. For 4L you have to be stationary yes... AND transmission in neutral then shift from 4H thru "N" on transfer and right into 4L , then back to drive to move. And in neutral to come out of 4L as well. Basically, for everyday snow driving don't bother with it at all, and just pull straight back into H4 at 50mph and below as you have already stated :- ) This transfer lever is more reliable than the knob type as one less electrical thing to go wrong and after trying it once or twice it becomes second-nature and it's learned. Nice vid though as yeah not many vids out there on this.
And at least for the 2021s… if not sure what to do the instructions are on the driver visor. Just look up 🍻
@@Channelofdk Yes indeed. I think this pretty much true going way-back, for at least with the part-time 4wd systems. They have been putting them there for many years. My first Toyota 4wd truck back in '88 had it there.
Thank you so much. I found this to be a very helpful. I have a Toyota rental and now it’s snowing!! Normally I drive a Subaru outback, but I like this 4Runner. This seems like a very nice and solid vehicle.
BTW…. I just used the 4wheel drive and the sport mode in a mini blizzard in Reno, Nevada! Thank goodness I watched your video earlier today!! 👍🏻👍🏻‼️
Awesome glad it helped. See lots of Subarus in Buffalo and they perform very well in some of our heavy snow. Fun to drive too!
I love my Subaru!!! 👍🏻
I actually wanted a new Subaru but was worried about the CVT transmission they all have now.😬
I’m just seeing your reply 🤦🏻♀️‼️ Your video helped a lot!! BTW I’m originally from Watkins Glen NY!! My dad went to Buffalo dental school way back in 1940s!👍🏻
Thanks for a good quick video. I had to figure it out at a Honda dealership parking lot 😂
Awesome glad it helped. I got that screaming call from my wife “how do you do this thing”.
Thank you. I’m a first time owner of a 4x4 4.runner would love if you explained all the other controls.
Awesome our first too. Not bad idea. Gonna do oil change soon and maybe film that as saw mine is different from few other oil change vids I watched.
I agree @markrock9682, I NEED A VIDEO of the knobs/controls specifically on 4 x 4, terrain changing on the 4runner. I'm so surprised there aren't more videos out there on this. I'm having a hard time finding them. Everyone is showing simple stuff like heat control, volume control, come on... don't need that stuff, show me the unusual knobs people DONT have in most cars. I don't want to destroy my truck changing settings in it I shouldn't, but would like to know when and how to by SEEING it done, not reading it in the manual. Thanks @dkfishinglifecrap9836 if you could do that video, not another one on oil changes, they're plenty of those out there. 😀
Thank you for this video! This was EXACTLY what happened to me today.
Happy to help!!!!!
Thanks for the video! It helped me! Just got my 4Runner TRD Offroad today, and was curious about the 4H 4L shifting.
Glad it helped! 4runners are awesome suv's! Our first toyota and happy with it.
Congrats on the 4Runner!
Very helpful than you!
Thank you for quick and to the point explanation
Ty!! Especially the info re the visor having instructions. Last year I accidentally went into 4L and had to call my husband. Needed a refresher for this years snow. It's a great video and very helpful!
Thanks
Thanks for the video. We just brought home the same one. Perfect!
Awesome!! They are fun to drive !!!
Thank you for the help!
Amazing video!
Bro you should take it to the dealer ship and make sure she didn’t damage anything putting into l4
Luckily it was very low speed maybe under 5 mph at the time. If she was doing 60 mph I’d have a mess to deal w. I don’t hear anything concerning at the moment.
THANK YOU for this video! It saved me! I was told I needed to engage the 4 wheel drive every now and then, so I was doing it for the first time, and made the same mistake your wife did, except I was in park. I then couldn’t get it out of 4 wheel drive. Gah! So I had to go to RUclips! 😅
Yeah not ton info on this so glad the vid helped !!
Very helpful, thank you.
thank you! It helped me 🙂
It boggles my mind how many people don't even glance at their owner's manual when they buy a new vehicle.
For sure, that can do so much more than just occupy space in a glove box lol.
Thanks, my salesman didn’t know shiz..told me I’d probably not use it, lolz.
Lol yeah more more these days all they know is how to cash those deposit checks.
Thanks a lot 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you!!!
I have a 2019 trd premium and every time I shift from 4h to 4L makes a grinding noise. I’m doing this stationary engaging the break on neutral and still grinds. Same when I go from 4L to 4h, it grinds. Any advice?
Hmm interesting. My level of auto experience is about oil changes and breaks. I would suspect a bearing of some sort. Maybe check some 4Runner forums of if someone knows and sees this comment hope they can chime in !
Common issue if you do the shift too slow. Gotta do it very fast.
Hi can you use H4 on tarmac/asphalt steep twisting road / like in the highest point in georgia, i am asking this because i went there and i just use 2H, i hesitated in using H4 because its tarmac/ asphalt not offroad/dirt and i am afraid i will ruin 4wd system/ trnsmission/ transfer case, thank you, hope you give insight it will be helpful in future adventures, thank you again.
People will argue you can and can’t. Always best to use according to what the manufacturer says. I wouldn’t jam it into 4h doing 70mph up a hill on asphalt but if you follow the manufacturer instructions kick it up to 4h going 30mph, for short duration I wouldn’t say it would “break” anything. If you don’t need the grip for conditions leaving the 4h off I’d argue is best.
Thank you for sharing! Just got a 2022 trd orp when I put my hand on shift knob and I feel some vibration. Just wondering is it normal?
I would say yes, there is some natural vibration for sure due to the "old school" shifting/engage system they use. These things are a tank, if its hitting all gears and no funny transmission slips should be good to go!
Question: So I have a Limited which is full time 4WD…so if I suddenly run into 5 to 10 inches of snow do I have to put it on 4L or just keep driving using 4WD?
Also, what is the point of 2WD? In what scenario would I need to switch from 4WD to 2WD???
Driving here in Buffalo NY I’ve never had to use 4 low. There would be a cases for where ur stuck in deep mud or snow and need to “crawl out” need that low end power. Normal snow driving 4 high engaged is mostly what you need. I’d say if your stuck in a snow bank and cannot move at all. That is a good candidate to use 4 low. If your moving and going more than 10 mph 4high should get the job done. The manual gives good overview when and instances to use 4 low.
@@Channelofdk thanks for the thorough response!! 😀 will check out the manual.
Just seeing this video very informative. Question. Where did you get those seat covers.
My wife found them on Amazon, searched TRD dog seat covers. Pretty inexpensive think under $40 if I recall.
Mine seems to be stuck in 4h. I move it to the N and the green light stays on. Not sure how to get it to turn off?
If you haven’t switched to reverse and back up few feet then switch back to drive I’ve noticed it sometimes takes a min to disengage the light. If the light won’t come off at all may be a sensor thinking it’s still in 4h.
I’m possibly getting a 4 runner I think I’m going to wait for the redesign see how that one is before I get one. But I am looking at a Trd off road premium. It’s also been a pain trying to buy a 4Runner without them being overpriced and sleazy salesman trying to do markups
Before we got ours I had no idea how little they change model designs compared to other auto makers. For me Toyota is one only brand I’d trust buying a new model year, the quality really is there. Took us about 4 months about a year ago now to get this w covid. Pain in ass for sure !
@@Channelofdk I definitely understand I think I’m gonna wait for the Redesign models to come out the 2024 And see if it’s better performance on gas I do love the forerunner they’re pretty nice but gas on those things are brutal
@@HotSizzleTV_ Yep, pretty sad mileage. Love the car anyway!
Good luck trying to get one. They're in such high demand right now that they sell before they even hit the dealerships and if they do, they're gone in less than 24 hours.
Gas isn't too bad and it's pretty normal for an SUV that size, I get about 21-22 MPG in mine, but I'm also not going over 70 MPH in mine. I add a little octane boost, and I use gumout complete system cleaner on a monthly basis. You'll see a big improvement in MPG if you clean the throttle body butterfly valve and airflow controller between each oil change.
It also helps if you don't pile on a bunch of crap you don't need lol. Remember, it's going to be driving in the city 99% of the time hahahaha.
I have a 2021 TRD Off Road myself, love it. But when I said these things are in high demand, I'm not joking. I waited close to 8 months for one, and then I lucked out when someone used one for trade with 24K miles on it.
That is true. Ours was height of covid and it was about 6 months and we were the lucky ones. Some had wait much longer. Our first Toyota and love it so far.
👍
Let’s say it’s snowing bad and I plan on driving, Do I need to have my foot on the breaks when switching from 2WD to 4WD when backing out a parking space?
Check your manual to be certain based on model you have. For ours no, you can do 2wd to 4wd high on the fly. Believe it should under 50mph but if your backing out you won’t be going that fast. 4 low is another story.
Thanks Just got mine same color and trim, didn’t have time yet to read manual and had ice storm, had to use 4H. First time with manual 4x4 previously all had all wheel drive nothing to shift. My understanding is 4x4 you shouldn’t drive in dry conditions as it may damage it. Do you know if that also mean in rain and icy conditions? Also it looks like you have seat covers, good fit? Can you provide link for covers.
Awesome! Great its our first Toyota we love it. I would agree driving in normal conditions with 4x4 engaged will make steering rough and could cause extra wear and tear which could lead to damage. From my experience this winter I have used the 4x4 in both rain/snow mix and icy conditions for trips 20 miles plus and don't have any concern of damage, think the way 4runners and those 4 wheel drives with the "manual" shifting are made for heavy use. If you do get a chance to read the manual they break it down. The seat covers were from Amazon link below:
www.amazon.com/VIEWPETS-Bench-Seat-Cover-Protector/dp/B07BTPSWC6/ref=sr_1_2?crid=2CBKYXMG1M77K&keywords=toyota+4runner+viewpets+seat+liner&qid=1645930600&sprefix=toyota+4runner+viewpets+seat+liner%2Caps%2C145&sr=8-2
Never engage 4x4 on dry pavement. It’s ok on dry gravel and some more rocky fire roads. The key is that the wheels must be able to slip. With that said, I would be weary about wet pavement unless if it’s a major storm. Again, if it’s not wet enough for the tires to slip…you may have issues
thanks for reply, I just got the 4Runner so don't want to cause any damage, not use to part-time 4x4
@@ryanm4013 Thanks, I know not to on dry pavement, but the other day had ice storm, so wasn't sure that was ok but it was quite ice on the highway and with new 4runner didn't want to crash. apparently you are suppose to engage the 4x4 once a month to keep things working, so I guess will have to do straight driving for few minutes on dry pavement from time to time.
The vehicle should be in neutral going both in and out of 4L.
Yes, good point. For those that didn't know the 2021 has instructions right on the driver visor if needed
So I can use 4wd when doing normal driving to work? Also can it be used while driving in the freeway? I’m new to this and I just got a 2017 4Runner 🥴
You can, however most gearheads, myself included would not recommend driving with 4 wheel engaged under normal driving conditions. 1. Drives clunky meaning you lose smoothness of steering - you will feel the diff trust me. 2. It’s putting lot unnecessary stress on parts when in 4wd under normal conditions which can lead to damage and costly repairs. These vehicles 4wd systems much different from a grocery getting type suv with awd.
@@Channelofdk Wow 😲 Thanks for the info!! 👌🏻
Are 4r TRD pro fulltime rear wheel drive and you engage 4ws as needed with shifter?
To my knowledge yes. Only 4 wheel drive when engaged not a true “all time 4 wheel drive” like some smaller suv’s.
Quick and easy?
Wow, I don’t know that you can switching gears when the truck is moving
Just make sure if 4low the vehicle is stopped but 4 high good to go.
@@Channelofdk Thank you for helping people with these videos
What you use to black out the interior?
Some inexpensive “dog seat cover” my wife found on Amazon. Nothing fancy.
@@Channelofdk I mean around the radio and what not. Is the black plastics stock?
Yes it is. Look can change with the grade
what seat covers are those?
Link for covers: www.amazon.com/VIEWPETS-Bench-Seat-Cover-Protector/dp/B07BTPSWC6/ref=sr_1_2?crid=2CBKYXMG1M77K&keywords=toyota+4runner+viewpets+seat+liner&qid=1645930600&sprefix=toyota+4runner+viewpets+seat+liner%2Caps%2C145&sr=8-2
What tires are you using?
The stock one, Dunlop Grand Trex. Handled pretty well in some heavy snow I felt.
Is H2 rear wheel drive?
I believe high 2 engages all 4 wheels but more power comes from the rears…. But I’m not 100% sure honestly.
You got squeaky brakes 🤔
Oddly yes. Brand new, 0 miles and from day 1 had light squeak especially when cold. Brought to dealer they replaced the wear clips and it stopped.
Thank you!
Thank you!!!
