Change the oil around 3-5K religiously. Within the last year I added TRD wheels, Prinsu roof rack with 42:" light bar, Baja Design ditch lights, RIGd Ultraswing, CBI rock sliders, Rago molle panels front and rear. Waterport Weekender, HiLift jack, Plano single and double cases, Victory front Blitz bumper, bottom skids. Tomorrow adding Smittybuilt winch and front bumper light bar! There are so many aftermarket mods. Hope you have deep pockets! LOL 😂

Only 40k original miles in literally mint condition and dead stock, no mods. I took it out on a pretty rutted and challenging trail in Southern California (South Palomar Divide in Temecula) the weekend after I bought it. Ihad an OLD bronco years ago with locking hubs and when you had the hubs locked for 4WD it also didn't take sharp U turns or hairpin turns very well. Just wondering if there's an issue on the front end somewhere somehow? VSC TRAC is on all the time below that is light it says VSC OFF. As is the Electronic Stability Control stay on too. But I don't like the way it feels or sounds when making a sharp turn. The car actually won't necessarily allow me to turn too sharp. Strange...

    Great video. All your videos are great. I have the same vehicle bought at about 6 months ago. 4 low has never worked. And the differential lock does not work either. The former owner said he never tried 4 low so I'm pretty sure it seized. I don't really think I need the 4 low but it would be nice to have. When I engage either the the differential lock or the 4 low they just blink and that is when I do it in neutral. I'm afraid if I take it to the dealer I'll be in for a $3,000 repair bill so I think I'll just leave it.

    I have just bought a 2008 Limited 4runner V6 177000 miles for three months. I' m a bit confused about the different speed on the transmission. What are D, L, 2, 3, 4 meant? Can you help out on that? These are knowledge that seem common enough that either people already know it from their parents, so they don' t bother explaining it or people put in on D and don' t want to feel stupid asking or looking at other features.
    I have guesses but never got the sure of its accuracy from. Can you change the gear from D to 3 or vice versa while driving? Why is 3 located infront of 2? I just drive 4wd with Gear 3 on a highway, and it speed up my accelaration and rpm. Gotta say I like it, but is it going to tear my 15 year old used car apart if I do it too often? What is the best gear for more urban streets? It had 5 trip to the gas stations in the time that my camery only need one.
    Also, I know you have a V8, so these questions may not have answers. When I pop it back to 2WD after parking, the 4wd lights keep beeping, until I drive for a few minutes. Is it trying to tell me something? Is it good idea to use 4WD in rain like in snow? What about street or potholes?
    By the way, your vids are the best guides I' ve found so far on this car, thank you very much.

      D is for Drive - it uses all gears available and will figure everything out on its own. It's best to leave it there. The other options will manually override it to stay in lower gears - mainly for descending down steep hills so you don't need to touch your brakes or towing a trailer.
      Driving on the highway in 3rd gear will do nothing but burn more gas and put more wear on the engine. You can shift on the fly as long as you aren't going too fast for the lower gears, but it's best to just leave it alone.
      As far as the shift into 2WD goes, flashing/beeping lights mean that it hasn't made the shift yet. It might require a bit of a rock back and forth or in your case, a bit of driving but as long as they eventually stop, everything is fine!

      @@CanadianGearhead Thank you so much. So if I get this right, D is for normal driving, the rest is like a manual transmission depend on the load and road condition. So lower gears is for downhill, higher gears is for uphill? The higher it is, the faster it is? When I try Gear 3 instead of D, mainly because the acceleration at D is much slower than my 2013 Camery, and I get honked at a few times when trying to slot in the freeway. I much comfortable with Gear3 speed tbh but hard to stay comfortable not knowing what it really does. Thanks again.

    • @CanadianGearhead
      @CanadianGearhead  2 года назад +1

      In D it will use all the gears to accelerate properly. Trying to outsmart the transmission by selecting gears manually isn't going to benefit you much, even if you think it feels faster. If you put your foot to the floor in D, it'll downshift to 3 on its own when it needs to - if not, something is wrong

I was driving 2008 v6 4runner in very sloped iced place and i didnt know about how to engage 4WD and i switched to L4 and i was in Drive and beeping sound came /now i realise my L4 was failed to engage/ i didnt understand what happend i hoped it work and i accelerated to climb to mountain then some load horrible grinding sound came so load in fact. After that sound im kinda worried i got reversed back off the mountain in drived in normal H2 and back home.
    my question is im kinda worried about car got internally damaged? or its ok or not what should i do?

    • @CanadianGearhead
      @CanadianGearhead  Год назад +1

      Is it still making grinding sounds when you're driving normally? If not, that might have just been the ATRAC system kicking in when it was trying to find traction. Try engaging the different 4WD settings in a gravel parking lot and see if it still makes loud noises - if it doesn't, you're probably fine

    • @CanadianGearhead
      @CanadianGearhead  2 года назад

      Hmmm, it shouldn't change the sound at all. Maybe you have an exhaust leak or a bad motor mount or something that changes with a different load on the engine? 4lo is just for crawling so it isn't really useful over 10 kmh or so in my opinion

EDITL Yeah, I shoulda watched more of the vid before posting. Mine's exactly the same as the one used in the vid. Had it 15 years and only driven her in 4Lo a dozen times at most. I do still try to remember to shift over to 4Lo periodically, once a year or so, and drive a few feet before putting it back just to make sure the transfer case hasn't forgotten about it. lol

    I would not recommend shifting from ANY 4x4 setting when traveling especially 55mph. I know factory says ",you can", but why not risk any damage. And stop to ensure proper engagement!after all you ARE changing gearing,they need to mesh properly.Have you ever pulled/repaired a transfercase ,front diff or axles?? It is expensive and. SUX. So on a 5th generation forerunner you don't want to be driving around on dry ground in 4 high there's no there's no locking center diff when you put it in 4 high The front and the rear are locked up automatically there's no there's no differential in the center now on off road versions and proversions they have real lockers and that's a whole different thing You don't want to drive with your rear locker on in 4 high or 2 wheel drive either You'll hurt your system and your differential and you'll wear your tires out as well

So, I just put it into 4lo and without accelerating, I let it go back and forth in my gravel driveway. I also got my first 4runner the end of January. It's a 22 TRD Pro. I have yet to put it the other gears. So, I need to see what all I'm supposed to do. Both 4runners are similar but yet, so different. I love the pick up the V8 has. It's really quick! Thank you!!

    I have a 2008 V6 Limited 4WD
    I read online that keeping a 4th gen (03-09) V6 4runner in 4Hi it causes excessive wear & tear compared to RWD.
    Is this true?
    If it's true, which components are taking excessive wear & tear?
    I prefer to stay in 4Hi all the time as there's a lot of potholes where I live.
    If someone knows this for sure I would appreciate a response.

      Service manual say to drive in 4wd at least 10 miles a month to keep components lubricated. Though it doesn’t clarify if some of those miles should be used in 4 low but I’d assume just use 4H a few rainy days a month and just throw it in and out of 4L once a month

    When an 07 Limited with the V8 was available in my town I jumped on it!!!
    Only thing wrong with it was the AC not working. I've had it in the shop and was told it is the "sun load sensor" causing the problems.

    I also didn't know until after I bought it that they are prone to rust underneath. Turns out mine is unfortunately... Up top is absolutely immaculate Shadow Mica!
