I have had a 2014 4Runner for 6 years and have used the 4 wheel drive in snow but have never used those extra crawl gears. Thanks, now I think I understand how to use them....
Hey guys remember to activate your 4wheel drive once a month. It’s important. Otherwise it can malfunction the computer system is old school. Also change the oil every 5k miles.
I dont currently have a 4runner but will be getting one once toyota isn't 9.69% interest. Thank you for this as i did not know that. (The 4wd once a month).
I got my 4runner in Dec 2022. My local dealership didnt have any in stock, so i put a deposit on one that was "in transit" to the dealership. I was so excited, when I told my co workers about it, one of them said his wife had a 4runner and they both think its an absolute tank. He said " I love her 4runner, the only bad thing about owning one is.. once your boss finds out you drive a 4runner, you cant call into work because the bad weather ( we live in upstate NY ) 😂😂😂
I have a 2005 Chevy Tahoe that has a full time 4WD system (BorgWarner 4482 transfer case) (4 Hi unlocked 60:40 torque split) with a 4 Lo locked (50:50) option too. It is AMAZING in the snow. It’s nice being able to just drive it. No worrying with switching 4wd on and off. GM offered it for a couple of years.
I loved your tips on the T4R regarding lights, gages, rear seat tricks etc. so I subscribed. In this video, I want to point out a few things that may cause confusion. The Crawl Control and Multi-terrain cannot be activated simultaneously. Toyota isn’t very clear anywhere but check it out. When it’s on, either CC or MTC, there is an amber light in the dial. The CC is a speed control in 5 steps, the fastest speed is ~5-6 kmph. The MTC is like ATRAC with finer control depending on amount of wheel slip allowed before the brakes control it. Rock is least and Sand is maximum slip. CC works in forward and reverse, and is good for extricating the truck or controlling speed in very steep slopes, like DAC. Also, I heard you can use MTC in 4-hi, but only in sand/ snow. One thing to note is that engaging 4-hi (or 4-lo) is like a permanent 4wd (like the limited) with the center diff locked, since there is no center diff in the t-case. This provides excellent traction at both front and rear wheels, but can cause drivetrain windup damage on hard dry surfaces.
First I want to thank you for watching and most importantly for Subscribing. 👏🏻 Thank you on your explanation of the amazing 4wd this trucks have. I’m not going to lie there are some things that even I learn on it everyday. I 100% appreciate your explanation. Will most certainly test it out.
@@claudiacanales2662 The Limited is “full time” 4WD, i.e., it has the ability to NOT cause windup of the drivetrain on hard surfaces or city driving because it has a center differential somewhat similar to a limited slip, called a Torsen differential. If you put it in 4 hi or 4 low, it just locks up the center differential. While you get up to 40-60 front rear torque transfer in full time 4WD, you no are FIXED 50-50 torque transfer. This provides more stability (control and safety) on slippery surfaces like snow and ice in the city. At speeds above 50 mph or on the highway, full time 4WD is better especially if you have hard surface and snow/ ice intermittently. BTW, a differential allows rotation at different speeds on either side of the differential. This is important in NOT causing harm to the drivetrain by causing windup damage because wheels travelling at different speeds can't slip on the surface it's on, like a hard surface or road. Wheels on either side of an axle, for example, need to travel at different speeds when turning or going around a curve.

I think there is some truth to that. I debated for weeks on limited vs. trd offroad. All wheel drive on the limited is going to be way better for just cruising in snow, black ice, standing water, etc. I had always had all-wheel drive cars before. Decided on the trd offroad however and very glad I did because it is much more capable offroad. We just take my wife’s Rav4 when we going skiing and take the 4Runner on summer trips.
I’ve explained in a comment before, I do that as a mental note to self that it has to be done at a complete stop. Regular foot on the brake and stop is enough. I hope this clarifies that. Either way. I appreciate you watching the video. Cheers!
Need more of you to come forth and set people strait. Are the stock tires superb? No, they won't win any 1 terrain competition. However, most people do not give them enough credit. I have run the stock tires in and on every terrain in every season and with the exception of sloppy mud, they have exceeded my expectations hands down.
I don’t like confrontation, but with all due respect sir. I’ve been using 4wd in snow for the past 20 years with great results. This after getting partially stuck in 2wd , engage 4wd and off I go. Without issues 🤷🏼♂️. To each his own I spouse.

Nah, we are human so we can adjust and learn. I never drive part-time 4 wheel drive before but I will learn after a couple attempts
Dumbest thing I've ever heard..
Why the parking brake and not just the regular brake??? Thats to busy
I’ve explained in a comment before, I do that as a mental note to self that it has to be done at a complete stop. Regular foot on the brake and stop is enough. I hope this clarifies that. Either way. I appreciate you watching the video. Cheers!
No need to put the parking brake on for changing to 4H or 4L
Yes , I’m aware 😉. (It’s a mental note I do hope remind me to be at a full stop)
Thank you for watching, I appreciate that!!
I already snapped my CV in desert sand I'm utterly shocked only at 40k miles with 2in lift
That’s wild, you Sir are a savage lol. Thank you for watching, stay tuned for more 4Runner and FJ content.
@@VikingsGarage did you buy aftermarket heavy duty CV’s and use a drop kit so they are not at too high a degree?
My 4Runner it is still 100% stock for now.
When a Norwegian say’s Y’all you know he’s legit!
Lol 👍🏻
Or get a Limited and use the AWD mode exclusively.
As long as its a 4runner 😉
Don’t need parking break
Im aware
I'm shocked with the stock tires the whole 5th gen lineup even though its not aggressive the HTs handled better than my ironman ATs in snow
Pretty impressive.
Need more of you to come forth and set people strait. Are the stock tires superb? No, they won't win any 1 terrain competition. However, most people do not give them enough credit. I have run the stock tires in and on every terrain in every season and with the exception of sloppy mud, they have exceeded my expectations hands down.
Right on my friend. You won’t know unless you experience it for yourself. Thank you for watching, I appreciate you.
What set of tires your running.
Good question, a very good set. Bfgoodrich advantage t/a sport lt 265/70r17 115t
55,000 miles on them and counting
Highly recommended for this vehicle
Parking brake NOT needed
Yes , I KNOW!
Lol I am one of those people that haven't tried 4wheel drive and I got 4runner one month ago
You got to do it! Let me know how it goes. 👍🏻
Toyota & others recommend you drive in 4WD for 10 miles every month to lubricate the front drive components.
👏🏻👏🏻
@@tomc8115 thanks. I haven't had much success because I always forget to use 4WD and the worse part is I rarely drive 4runner.
That sucks, hopefully you start driving it more.
🤙
😃⛄️
Your radio is blinking
I noticed the go pro/camera was having a glitch. My radio doesn’t actually blink, good catch nonetheless.
No big deal, test it on ice slop
I have 😉
@@VikingsGarage 🤬🤬🤬🤬👊👊👊👊👊👊
LOL. Using 4low in snow is laughable.
Why’s that?
I don’t like confrontation, but with all due respect sir. I’ve been using 4wd in snow for the past 20 years with great results. This after getting partially stuck in 2wd , engage 4wd and off I go. Without issues 🤷🏼♂️.
To each his own I spouse.
Answering Ted 😉, either way I appreciate you guys watching.
@@VikingsGarage According to the manual 4Hi can be used on icy or snow covered roads, 4Lo is for deep snow, and high and low literally mean high speed and low speed positions.
when not in 4wd, is the default drive on the rear or front axle...thanx...
Rear wheel drive.
