    X1 Carbon for me...Why? Matte Screen, Keyboard, snappy performance and overall build (soft touch) and light weight. It's just a joy to use. You just have to wait for a good sale for the X1 Carbon.

    One of the most important things for me, because I spend a lot of time watching videos whilst laying in bed, is how warm does a laptop get under video load, and where does the fan exhaust to? (if the exhaust is on the bottom the laptop overheats because it is normally resting on the bed covers). But hardly any reviewers talk about how warm these things get in this scenario, even though 90% of us use them in real life that way frequently....

    I got a thinkpad x1 carbon from my employer, less than a Year ago and first, the keyboard failed, that was covered by the warranty, then the right click button got stuck, finally the screen failed which was not covered by the warranty, I was told the have had problems with thinkpads in other locations. Now, I've had a couple of thinkpads before, and x200 which was amazing, and a T470s which I think hast the last great thinkpad keyboard, the x1 carbon is very light and powerful but for some reason I was never able to write comfortable. I used it mostly for connecting to meetings while I was away from the office or to fix problems remotely. Now I got a mac and my keyboard experience increased greatly.

      If you do web development with Windows tools, I think any of those Lenovo or Dell would be a good choice. If you do web development with Mac tools, then the Macbook is the only option. As you said, the M1 processor is new and some software will be run in compatibility mode which could be a constraint.

    I’m used to using Apple where they just work and have a trouble free long life. The only issue that I found is most business software is for a windows machine so I want to go back to windows. When making my choice the keyboard is important so the X1 Thinkpad is my choice. I like the Microsoft Surface’s screen. What I was hoping to learn in this review was the requirement for security software. I liked Apple because I didn’t have to worry about this annual fee and the annoyance of it running in the background. The Microsoft Surface seems to be copying some of Apple’s features and I read that you don’t need the security software. Is this true? That would be a selling feature for me.

    • @svefre85
      @svefre85 Год назад

      If you update your Windows (10 or 11) regularly you'll see that new Security Updates are available nearly daily. There is no need for an 3rd party software if you update often. Both laptops are suitable for this...

  • @69memnon69
    @69memnon69 3 года назад +3

    You can run the surface at native scaling, just change the resolution to 1504 x 1002. I previously used thinkpads and they’re great, aside from frequent issues with bitlocker (but I’m guessing there have been tpm improvements since then). Last 3 laptops have been surface products and they’re great too, glossy screen is infuriating though. I wouldn’t be able to put up with a 1080p display nowadays though.

    Part of the reason for the $500 price difference is you will be keeping the carbon a lot longer than the surface 4. My company still uses Lenovo 490's and T61's! Bother well over ten years old. They may upgrade when the pandemic is over.

  • @run80s
    @run80s 3 года назад

    So I bought the x1 gen 9 and decided to return it on couple of issues:
    1. the trackpoint is useless and it makes the touchpad cramped
    2. coming from a macbook pro the speaker quality was a bit of a negative shock, but i'd live through it.
    3. When using Zoom and doing some programmer stuff (chrome debugging) i'd hit a hard throttle to 0.4 ghz
    4. bluetooth mouse was laggy, read up on it, seems like an intel issue
    5. keyboard layout is non standard compared to macbook/surface/lenovo consumer stuff, i just dont understand why everyone uses their own keyboard layout? why do they give me conference buttons but not multimedia? Arrow keys are a bit lower, but then they sneak in page up and down. So when i mistype i lose my place completely. F-keys are small and cramped to the left to make place for home keys. Add up all this and kiss goodbye your muscle memory of how small keyboards should behave.
    6. the fans would be on a lot when using 2 external displays. I guess the cooling could be better.
    Overall, when i would think about my daily use of this kind of machine, i found that it tries to do too much for too many people but it kinda doesnt excel at anything:
    too many ways of inputing stuff yet EVERY SINGLE input method has its quirks. I cant rely on it to power through my work because of throttling and i'm not sure when they're going to fix that. It's not very good for leisure because you can get better audio for less money. I just didnt feel like I could rely on it somehow.
    If it was cheaper i guess i would be able to justify all this, but it's not.
    Anyway i was considerin getting a surface, but THAT glare, omg. I think i'll wait a bit for slim 7 pro.

    I would recommend getting the basics rights: put the specs out there, there is nowhere stated the exact model of the Ryzen CPU... very chaotic review, mark down in my view

    Lenovo's keyboards are not so so good.
    surface, dell xps, hp spectre have far better keyboards.
    Also, the size of the X1 is terrible, it's huge laptop with big bezels.

  • @eddieoconnor4466
    @eddieoconnor4466 3 года назад

    Sorry, but I've seen some folks with that Alcantara covering..and it gets GROSS and DISGUSTING!......as for the Lenovo?...yeah, it may attract fingerprints?...but keeping it clean is easy...get yourself one of those "microfiber" cloths?and you'll be good to go....just give it a rub down after each use? and you're not gonna be noticing prints very often.
    Also,
    Which person came up with the notion that being able to open a laptop with one hand is a "feature"?. Listen, I dunno about the rest of the laptop using universe? But we I.T. people prefer laptop that you have to open with TWO HANDS, because it signifies a strong hinge design! You ever see an exec or VIP with a laptop that easily opens with one hand?...within a few months time its in the shop for REPAIRS to its HINGE. Please, we need to stop even mentioning this aspect of laptop as if its some great design feature that only high-end and select laptops have! I have a Dell Latitude E-4300 from years back that ALSO has a lid that opens with one hand...IT MEANS NOTHING!!!
