Great overview. As much as I appreciate the current ThinkPads, I've changed my living will to have my 2005 American built IBM ThinkPad T60 buried with me when I pass away. That's how amazing older ThinkPads were and the loyal following they still have. Blown away by the increase in battery times with the FHD+ model. Ravi Peiris M.D.
I love my x1 carbon. I bought it with a 25% student discount so the price wasn't that bad. For any other Linux users out there, it works perfectly except for the lack of fwupd. Even the fingerprint reader works!
I ordered a 5G model, core i5, 256GB of storage, 16GB of RAM, IR webcam and Touch Screen FHD+ for $1,581. I tried some I7 11th laptop from Asus but they are easy throttled at 100C. It make a high performance processor look useless in every thin laptop. Thank for the review. I hope I can get mine soon
Thank you for the wonderful and thorough comparison, the hard work you put into your content is always appreciated. But I do have some questions - 1. At the 4:16 mark or so, when you discuss thermals, I'm unsure from which laptop you've drawn these temps? I'd assume the i5 would run cooler than the i7 and I'd be curious to see if in fact that's true, and if so, by how much. 2. At 9:45 or so when you discuss battery life, I'm curious if the nearly double life of the i5/FHD+ model is due to the screen or processor? Or are we to assume it's a combination? Anyways I really enjoyed this comparison, thank you for working so hard on this!!!
Hi! Good review but I noticed on your videos that it gets repetitive especially in the pros and cons and final thoughts. Maybe make it one part? It will save your time and effort in making the vid and our time in watching your vids also.
Hi just want to share that I faced the same problem of my old thinkpad (company laptop) dropping to 0.4 ghz. Processor was i5 8250u. Was pretty frustrating to use as it happens randomly. Didn't really get to the bottom of the issue since i left the company early this year
Hello Andrew! Thank you for your review. You compared the Core i5, FHD+ configuration battery life (14h, 2') vs. the Core i7, UHD+ configuration battery life (about the half, 7h 48'), but what about the weight "starting at 1.13 kg"? Thank you in advance!
What is it with the power issues. I just bought one. States battery only has one hour 52m with 75 percent. Also when I shut it down it blinks. The red light and the white power button. I do have the lte version. So what is it with all these people saying 8 to 9 hours of battery. I also don’t understand why Lenovo hasn’t fixed the bios issues with these power standby issues. Never do I have issues with my Dell. Can anyone help
Have you tried screen sharing by video conferencing with Google Meet, Teams or Skype? Connected to the power with the battery selector at maximum performance the laptop is unusable. In my tests I have seen that the system does not have the ability to properly dissipate the heat generated and the performance is very low. Ahh... and I have the latest version of the BIOS. What can you tell us about this?
Great review Marc. Can you suggest a X1 model for me right now looking to buy but confused. Want I7 UHD no touch screen. What model should I be looking at for Christmas 2022?
Nice PC. Good keyboard layout for a PC of this screen size. Webcam was fair. Image looked better on this compared to the video you did about a month ago. 1080p should be the minimum not 720p. Microphone sounded a little muffled but still usable. Display was very good. Does this work with a pen? Port selection was good but a micro SD slot would be nicer. Nice looking PC on the outside. No matter how good these machines look on the outside functionality should always be number one in deciding to purchase any PC. Anyway as always another great review.
Thanks for another great review Andrew. Is the camera quality on the IPS panel version the same as the UHD version? Others have mentioned the trackpad is not a great experience? Is it similar to the X1 Nano trackpad? Thanks!
Love the review. But why is the battery life on this laptop so varied. When just josh review of the laptop (FHD vs 4k) was only a half hour difference or so?
I use a custom test which is used by the industry and those are the actual results from continuous web surfing test over wifi at 150 nits. I don't know which tests Just Josh uses. I can only give you my results.
Other tests confirm Andrew's finding that there is a big difference. NotebookCheck ran tests on the FHD+ i7 model and the UHD+ i7 model. The FHD+ model reached 11:40 (150 nits) and 9:32 (full), while the UHD+ model reached 7:22 (150 nits) and 5:00 (full). Those results are consistent with Andrew's results. I had a look at Just Josh's review, and his test involved streaming a Netflix video on each machine until they both died. I am not sure that is a reliable testing method, and it doesn't give much of an indication of battery life in everyday use. It would have been more useful if he had run separate tests for WiFi and (non-streaming) video playback.
Are all X1 carbon Intent Evo certified? Great review by the way! and great editing. Subscribed! To be honest, my usage is between High to Heavy. Its high but not heavy. So, I am a little confused between X1 Carbon and P15 gen 1. Any comments?
Thanks! Yes, X1 Carbon are evo certified. All models. P15 Gen 1 will be much more powerful than the X1 Carbon Gen 9. It is a mobile workstation with discrete graphics whereas the X1 Carbon Gen 9 is an ultraportable laptop meant for mobility and longevity in terms of battery life.
@@andrewmarcdavid Appreciate your reply. Thank you so much. I think both are good. It's just that P15 is not portable and will demand more battery. Whereas, X1 Carbon will be more battery efficient. I think from "future proofing" POV, I might go with X1 Carbon. :)

I saw the comments in the Lenovo website and seems this laptop suffers from throttling a lot, you pay a lot for something that does not work as it should... I was planning to buy it but paying a lot to have a throttling machine, no than you, and even worse because is Intel. I will look only for AMD laptops when they become available and doesn't suffer from the nefarious throttling
Disappointed that you just glossed over the TrackPoint. For many of us it's a necessity and a major driver for using ThinkPads since Lenovo is the only manufacturer still offering keyboards with nubs. As I posted on your unboxing video, cursor drift from using the TrackPoint has been a significant problem for many years. I asked there that you include this in your full review and have waited for your full review before making a decision to purchase the Gen 9. When users post about the problem on the Lenovo site, Lenovo ignores the concerns. Apparently you have chosen to do Lenovo's bidding by avoiding this issue as well by not conducting a full test of the TrackPoint.
It worked fine for me. Sorry can't include everything unless you want a 30+ minute video in which case most people would click away as being too long. My videos are long enough as it is. And the only bidding I do is for the channel, not for the brands.
reviewer Just Josh just did a side-by-side comparison of all the latest ThinkPads. His conclusion: Yoga Gen 6 > Nano > Carbon Gen 9 > Titanium Yoga Most surprisingly, the Nano battery lasts longer than Gen 9 Carbon and shows similar benchmark test results. The Carbon Gen 9 is a clear disappointment in the display, battery and keyboard.
