I don't do video editing or gaming so it serves me just fine. Every year I say "Maybe this is the year... " but the thing just won't die Lol. Maybe because the 4k panel supports more brightness it was consuming less power at equal brightness. Also, the latest processors are so powerful that they can render 4k content without consuming much more compared to fullHD. It would be interesting to see if this is the case with AMD cpus as well.

The problem with this review is that the power consumption for office work / programming on the UHD+ must be much higher due to tiger lake being very inefficient in that field vs FHD. I tested around quite a lot on a LG Gram 16 with the 1165g7, and while watching video the resolution practically doesn't matter. However for surfing, typing in notepad++ or microsoft office if I decrease the resolution from 2560x1600 to 1280x800 I get about 30% higher battery life.
I do believe that IGZO panels don't matter about resolution anymore for power consumption, in many cases higher resolution panels even consuming less, because they have a much higher budget to produce them as they sell for a premium. And tiger lake is really efficient on video playback, plus resolution then kinda depends on the video only, not on the screen it's played back fullscreen. Actually it's clearly now the CPU that is burning through your battery. NVME with HIPM/DIPM activated, the display panel and so on are really efficient. The lg gram 16" idles at 1.8w with usably low screen brightness. it only goes up to around 4.3w on max luminance. So I guess the display panel uses about 0.5w to 3w per hour depending on brightness. However while surfing or productivity work I get 6-7 watt power consumption at low brightness. Hence for seemingly easy tasks the CPU will consume a lot of power. Actually Kaby Lake R and Comet Lake were much better in this regard. Ice Lake a disaster and tiger lake just improved on Ice lake.
I feel for intel we need to wait for Alder lake to get good actual battery life outside of watching videos. So the lg gram caneasily playback video in edge via wifi for 20-25 hours with good brightness if the videos are long enough - because as soon as you leave fullscreen and scroll around or watch many short clips it consumes more power (around 250 I guess, 80%) thanks to the efficient screen. But for work I only get about 12-14 hours. And well that is with that big 80wh battery. Apple M1 shows that office work or watching video is no difference. Same for smartphones. Intel needs to catch up here. and they announced so for Alder lake. Those numbers are with optimized windows meaning services not needed disabled, throttlestop optimizing and so on...
Oh yeah and I would guess i5 needs maybe 5-10% less power than i7. So I will exchange my lg gram with i7 to an lg gram with i5 processor (my lg gram came with defective hardware - so I have to exchange anyhow so I will just return and reorder with i5).

@@JustJoshTech Good review. I was actually looking at this laptop as a dev machine. How feasible is it for that with the i7 and 32 GB of RAM (backend java dev, enterprise apps, docker, microservices etc). I really want a Ryzen, and I found the one you recommended, the Yoga Slim 7 Pro with a Ryzen 5900HX, but with 16 GB of RAM soldered, and I feel that is not enough as a dev machine. How would you think these 2 would compare, and how would the X1 Carbon Gen 9 hold up as main dev machine. Pretty hard to decide, with flaws on all sides

    TL:DR
i5 and i7 doesn't mean anything anymore - look at core count and frequency differences, see what the GPU is. Decide based on that
Anything up to 15 inches 1080p or 1440p, 1440p or 4k for 17 inches. I've tried all possible configs because I'm a system tester. If you're gaming, 1080p or 1440p screen. 4k is too difficult to run, and downscaling isn't optimal.
4k screens are about 2-3 times as power hungry as 1080p screens, and GPU load is increased.. So be ready to suffer a 30% battery life drop just for that alone.

Buying a Windows laptop is SO hard. There’s a lot of options and a lot of pros and cons. I discovered this channel looking for the best 13.3 or 14 inch laptop I could buy for my sister for no more than $600 and I ended up getting a deal in a Dell Inspiron 14 5000 with the 11th gen i5, 512GB NVMe SSD and Intel Iris Xe graphics for $529 + TAX (regular price is like $700).
In my case is way easier, I just sold my mid 2014 13 inch Retina MacBook Pro and I’m getting a M1 MacBook Air right away without having to choose

Since I intend to keep my laptop for at least five years, I always try to go for the best specs I can - especially now that everything is always soldered on. i7-1165G7 and 32 GB RAM I've already decided on, but I keep going back and forth on the display. I adore matte displays, but I'm also definitely the kind of person who'll cram as much as possible on there. I assumed I'd prefer the FHD because battery life is so important to me, but the difference is so small...
Why can't they have a matte 4K option!

As others said, 4k has marginal improvement on 14" screens - that extra money will be better spent elsewhere.
And about the difference being small in this video: there are a number of variables to consider. The i7 may have helped reduce overall power consumption for example, because more capable processors generally don't need to run as much as less capable processors.

6:54 Both Dell and HP use 78Wh batteries on their 14" 2-in-1 laptops that are X1 Carbon/Yoga equivalents, which can last up to 13hrs with their optional 1W FHD panels.
8hrs on a Flagship ultrabook isn't too impressive, nor is it "the longest runtime", just the bare minimum work-day runtime(9-5). So this is pretty misleading information.

    Hey Josh!
About that AMD vs Intel, idk about the video editing part but, I've actually tabulated around 35 games running on the Ryzen 7 5700U and the i7 1165G7. Even I considered the Iris Xe iGPU to be better than the AMD Radeon iGPU, but the new 5000 series really overthrows the intel tigerlake. Idk if its due to better processing power or the GPU but I actually got 10 to 20 Frames more in the ryzen than the i7 on similar settings. Tho it was equal in some games like Forza Horizon and CSGO but still, overall ryzen fared much better. and honestly speaking, pricewise the 5700u is closer to the i5 1135G7 than the i7.
What do u think about this??

So confused, so many factors to way. I don't do gaming or video/music editing, or for that matter much spreadsheet work, but I do work from home, with some mobile, and I do spend long hours online 5-7 days per week and frequent on and off evenings and weekends, normal stuff, including lots of streaming of stock quotes, youtube reviews (and movies), Internet searches and research, that sort of thing. Any suggestions to help me decide? It's a tough one. Dell does say their UHD+ screen does have ant-reflective treatment of some kind though I've heard it really doesn't do much.

@@lohbut2 I actually haven't made the purchase yet. Put it off. May within the next few months. I did notice that the big discounted prices around the start of the year are gone, and even the 2021's are priced higher now than then, almost as much as the new 2022's now. Oh well. One thought. I had thought the 2022's might greatly increase the battery life, making getting the 4k screen an easier decision, but best I can tell, though the chips in the new 2022's are improved, battery life apparently is not. Oh well again.

@@lohbut2 Don't know if you'll see this, it has been almost a year, but I still haven't bought the new laptop yet but am about to. Care to share your experiences, good and bad, with the choice you made? And here's an update about what I am trying to decide about in case you have any added thoughts about any of it: Maybe you can share some updated thoughts regarding the choice I am facing here in 2023. I am going to get the Dell XPS 17 9730 with the Intel gen 13 i7 chip (maybe the i5), the 4050 or 4060 graphics card (leaning towards 4060 though don't know if I need that), 16GB RAM and 512GB SSDI (both upgradeable), and Windows 11 home. Am torn between the FHD+ or the 4k UHD+ display (leaning towards the 4k HUD+). I would like the better battery life of the FHD+, but everything else seems to suggest the 4k UHD+ display. I notice in some 15" display comparisons that the clarity of the 4k is much greater, no little lines seen as with the FHD+ in the close up shots. And I'm thinking there might be an even bigger difference in the 17" displays. I do not do gaming or video or music editing, just a lot of normal stuff online, streaming stock quotes and charts, streaming movies, many chrome tabs open, youtube while other things stream in the background that I click back and forth between often, and long hours 7 days a week on the laptop. And though it will be plugged in the majority of the time, I am expecting to do more mobile going forward, not most but more than in the past. I could save a lot of money getting the gen 13 i5, the 4050 and the FHD+, but the sweet spots seems to be the gen 13 i7, either the 4050 or 4060, and the 4k UHD+ display. Help.
I'd welcome your or anyone's thoughts on any of this. I'm pretty set on the i7, but the 4050 (with 6 cores) and the 4060 (with 8 cores) is my biggest question mark. I wonder for instance if the 4060 is even necessary for my use cases, I'm thinking what I do is more single core activity than multi core so the jump from 6 to 8 cores may be irrelevant to me, and that maybe the 4050 might run cooler and get better battery life, with almost similar or similar performance for my use cases. Any thoughts on the 4050 vs 4060 choice, and the FHD+ vs 4k UHD+, when it comes to the larger 17" display size?

Do you use or recommend a 4K display as an alternative to one built into the laptop? I do a lot of text editing and want a device that will make this easier for me. But if I'm going to be doing most productivity work indoors at home, I think it might be better just to get a 4K monitor instead. A FHD/FHD+ panel is good enough for simple on-the-go tasks right?

Hey Josh, I had your site up waiting for the new video. I've been following you for sometime. You make fantastic reviews. I would like to ask you to review 15/15.6" laptops and provide recommendations for what to buy. I was going to buy the Lenovo Ideapad 5 15" last year after you gave it a terrific review, but it sold out globally. I have literally been waiting for you to recommend a 15/15.6" since then. I am REALLY hanging out for it. I have a 5 year old budget laptop that is slow and freezes, and takes ages to boot up. It's driving me crazy. I live in Australia, so I have to translate your recommendations to Australian models, and what can be sourced locally. We don't have the prices and range you guys in the US have.
Hope you can help me out soon. Cheers Mate. Peter.

Hi, I was wondering how to replace my working laptop Lenovo Y700-17 (I use it for graphics - I don't play games) with a new model.
But I don't know what to look at, I have already a 27 inch Dell UP2720Q monitor and a separate system unit with Rizen 9.
I need a laptop with only 17 screens, I took 15.6 top-end Apple Pro (it heats up and makes noise, which is just horrible), sold it!
I'm looking at Dell G7 17 (7700) on Intel Core i9 NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER.
For me, the power to work with video work and graphics is important and 100% SRGB, and close ADOBE RGB 100%
    Budget 3000 $

Hi Josh, thanks a lot for your time and effort you put into these videos. I was following your recomendation and went for the i7 model pairing it with 32gb of ram, full hd screen. Unfortunatelly - coming from the x1 gen 8 with i5, 16gb and full hd, the gen 9 is just incredibly bad in terms of fan noise and heat. It is just no comparision. Even with no task at all or light tasks the gen 9 fan is running like crazy, whereas the gen 8 is not even to hear doing some adobe stuff - incredible! Do you have any suggestions, wheter I have a faulty unit or do I have to do someting with the settings? Bios is up do date! This status quo is just not bearable and ridiculous also considering the price. Not even my x230 was that loud! Thanks for your help.
