nice, I was born in 81 but i grew up listening to the oldies stations and all the 'songs without singing' were the ones that made me want to play guitar.
The drip is what it's about. Most reverb pedal demonstrations go for settings not sought while skipping the most obvious and searched for,Drip! Surf guitar you bone heads! Start with the right premise. Forget the plates, and rooms, drip drip drip! Great demo. Started right ended right.
Hey Ryan, just wanted to drop a comment after watching so many of your vids to thanks and you do a great job of being thorough w/ settings, and I find your commentary to be really helpful; like you aren't just talking to hear yourself talk, but trying to communicate what you want us to listen out for. Oh, and of course I love your unabashed drip chasing! Keep up the great work!
Great demo. Glad I've gone for the EHX Oceans 11, the quality of the reverb more than holds its own against the out-of-my-price-range Ventris and Strymon Flint
Thank you for the great video man. Great comparison. Before this video I though I get a boss for sure. But now even though the boss looks cooler the ocean 11 actually sounds better
Ryan, I just found your channel a few months ago. Been watching all your new stuff and going back and watching these old ones as I get a chance. You look so stiff in this video. It's good, but you can definitely see how far you've come along with your new ones.
The ventris has almost a kind of flange-y phasey mod thing to the drip - and it’s suffused throughout the whole verb. It doesn’t sound right at all even though it’s warmer and more lush sounding. The oceans 11 sounds pretty close to an outboard spring verb in its overall voicing but the trail sounds really discrete / digital. If it just had some more diffusion and was a little less resonant it’s be pretty great.
the drip may be a bit better on the O-11, but I just got a Topanga and really like it a lot - the volume control was the selling point for me. Had an FRV-1 and sold it fast. Sounded too sterile. Also the Topanda sounds great in a live band setting.
THIS is what I'm looking for in a demo. Thanks a LOT! I have the FRV-1 and the drip is more than fine but it does NOT handle fuzz/drive/etc indeed. Sounds like EHX really has that part down as well! I already wanted to check it out but you convinced me. I need it. I also noticed it has the 'trails' function, so if you bypass the pedal, the sound isn't cut off. Wonderful. Bu what could we do to make that 'kick' function (love it!) just a bit more natural? Subtle pitch shifter? Naah, that shifts the trails too. Irregular delay? Mmmmmh. How to do that... Time for some experiments... as soon as I have one.
TheGoldenChicken Id say it depends what u want to do. It does a bunch of weird stuff lots of other reverb dont do. I have Hall of fame 2 and Boss Rv-6 and others too. I'm gonna put this on my board but I had RV-6 on it. Not sure If I will like oceans 11 better or not. If say if you are interested in some of the odd features or rhis nice spring check it out. If you just want a normal reverb, I say don't get it.
TheGoldenChicken Awsome, I say you will enjoy it. I am having fun with it. Let me know what u think. Definitly look in the manual and check out the secondary options for each type of reverb, it makes this pedal even more feature filled. Have fun!
The drip is the spring reverb in the amp spring cage...on reverb and a higher volume on treble when it kicks back by rubbing the cage internally...to electronically show from a solid state pedal it's difficult to reproduce without a tape roll-off unless you bleed your capacitors... ...
first time ever on stage finished summertime blues the who doing a windmill jump three time and the fender reverb bounced with me on the table stage every jaw in the gym dropped like what freaky thing was that late 80's alien lasers no one had heard that before mind blowing special effect very cool
I think you will find the noise at the end of the trails is quantisation noise .In the 80s rack units ther was a pot to turn to minamise it ,but I doubt there is a pot in this pedal to adjust.
I've owned both the Oceans 11 and the Ventris and I prefer the EHX. The Ventris Outboard Spring Algorithm is spot on but I got tired of adjusting the myriad of settings on the Ventris and it just made me miss how simple the EHX was.
I give the Boss FRV-1 a lot of credit for driving up the market demand for a genuinely good drippy reverb, but I’m very happy to see technology catch up with the demand. The Boss has its charms but the Oceans 11 buries it. The Ventris is killer but way out of my price range. I’m also looking forward to the TC Drip but I have no idea what’s taking that pedal so long to appear. In the end though, we have affordable digital drip! Woo hoo!
Im honestly expecting the TC drip to be a predelay based reverb with a surfy voicing, it wont be bad, but I'm not expecting a legit drip out of it. Maybe it will surprise me.
Great video again. Love the Ventris but I could never afford it. I do own the frv1 and have bought the oceans 11 recently. I definitely prefer the frv1. Just keep the tone at 10 o clock and you're good. The Oceans 11 is too sterile for me. I am very interested in the Surfy Bear though.. Thanks for all the videos, they're very helpful! X
Well imo it’s not quite fair to compare Oceans 11 to Ventris because the last one is in stereo. I own an Oceans 11 (and I love it!) but I’m building a full stereo board right now and now trying to choose between Oceans 12 and Ventris - THAT would be a fair comparison. And since I read some people’s complains on the Oceans 12 I really tend to buy a Ventris.
I have little interest in any setting but the Spring which sounds great on this - I was just about to buy a Topanga, But now I am not sure which to buy ... the Topanga has a boost control which I like - Hmmmmmmm! Very Nice demo by the way.
The FRV-1 is one of the worst pedals Boss ever made. Couldn‘t get rid of it fast enough. It had that drip when no other pedal had it and that’s what made it famous, but at the same time it had that filtering going on which changed the whole guitar sound to unusable. Too bad. It‘s a faulty design....
Thanks for the great video. Ryan have you tried the Secondary Knob Function for the spring setting? The manual says the TIME knob will allow you to choose one of three spring lengths, up to a 24-inch spring. And the TONE knob adds a little bit of preamp drive before the reverb circuit. I just wonder what the "spring" length will do to the sound. I'm getting the pedal tomorrow (almost today in my time zone).
Yeah, to me it also sounds that the Ventris has a bit of a warmer tone (not by much though) and more hi fidelity. Too Hi Fi in my opinion actually i.e to my ears on the Ventris the trail appears on the form and perfect harmonic Tap-Delay-pedal-like oscillations. On the oceans 11 the trail was short and Sharp, but absent of Hi Fi exagurations (i.e. delay-like trails) and the trail appears slightly more chaotic (which appears more realistic to me as the springs wouldn't likely perform harmonic oscillations in one direction and instead you would hear a slightly more uneven wave packet with a combination of longitudinal and vertical oscillations. Moreover, I am pretty confident you can dial in a longer trail on the Ocean's 11 to be comparable to length of the trail-length dialed in on the Ventris. Then maybe the Ocean's 11 would have such a sharp trail. At the same time this slight distortion on the signal of oceans 11 reminds more of and old tube unit, as tubes always distort a lot at such high settings, something I didn't hear on the Ventris.
I'm not getting the same amount of drip that I'm hearing on your YT vid. About to try out some different guitars and amps with it. Maybe I'm the weak link!
did you load the offboard reverb setting with the update? you have to plug it into a computer and save it to a preset. if you are having trouble hit up Source Audio, they are very helpful.
Video idea for you. I did load, and have been playing with the outboard reverb tank from the update. I have also gone in via the phone app. Today I played through my 3 p90 LP, my Strat, my Tele, my Gretsch, my 2 home built Teles and my p90 SG. I went through my 68 Vibro Champ, 57 Tweed, Falcon and my Tweaker. Then I realized - what the hell do I know aobut getting drip? I have never had anything drip before. So maybe that's a video idea for the king of reverbs - which pickups, tone settings, amp settings, palm muting style - all the things we need to know to master the drip sound.
Ventris or Oceans 11 for use with high gain distortion leads ? I am not talking about just chugging along, mainly looking for a nice sustained reverb sound that goes with smooth lead lines with not overly saturated distortion..I am using an EVH 5150-3 50 watt head and now a MB Single Rectifier solo head seperate but these will be my distortion types used. right now I have an EHX Holy Grail Neo that works great but looking for more options with 1 pedal,Kinda want the Ventris for quantity/quality and the EHX Oceans 11 for that nice EHX tone..price wise no comparison here.
I think I hear the Oceans coloring the "dry" tone, for example min. 7.39 in the video. The guitar signal sounds harsher and brighter than the Ventris, of course also the reverb on top sounds also brighter but I worry about the "dry" signal. It would be interesting to review it with that in mind and compares the bypassed tones with the guitar through the pedal. Thanks for the demo Ryan! . As for nasty comments.....pink flamingos is a give up on the pink skin subject? XDXD.
This is the only reason I am considering selling my Oceans 11 and getting a Ventirs (or something else). I have found it colors the dry sound of the guitar more than a true bypass pedal. STill though...it's a tough choice as the Ocean's 11 does sound fantastic overall.
C. P. It’s a shame as the reverb sounds are great and the spring is one of the most authentic I’ve heard. If they ever released an improved version like they did with the canyon (and improved the dry signal problems) that would be a fantastic pedal. I ended up selling mine and getting a ventris, which is more costly but essentially has all the same features without the tone issue.
The Ocean 11 sounds great but what I like about the Ventris is its dual reverb (i.e. echo and shimmer). I own neither. TBH, I could buy 3 cheaper pedals for the price of a new Ventris though...like a Zoom Ms-70 CDR and an Oceans 11 with cash left for a decent delay pedal.
It’s all about feel! Totally has its own style, like jazz, blues, classic rock, it’s all about phrasing and technique...gotta to practice the tremolo picking, arpeggios...simplicity is your best friend. I strongly recommend picking a surf song you dig and learn it. It’s your best bet.
Ryan, I heard this one song, one time only, did not know the name..OK, it was SO wet, it sounded like rain drops, dripping water, or a real small waterfall in a creek! How can I get it to actually sound like water dripping?
Cant find it, did not know the name of it.. just heard it one time.. ok..thanks, if you have any other ideas for the wetter than wet tone, let us all know..thanks.
How much is Ehx paying you to prop them up? Totally joking because of that TC Electronics drip comment that dude made on your other vid. No lies though. The Oceans 11 is a madman. I just didn't want another Ehx pedal since I already have the Canyon, and despite being a delay and not reverb, it does almost all of the same effects.
Paul Ecoli lol, I forgot about that guy. I can’t even get ehx to send me product, everything from them I’ve covered I’ve bought. I’ll be doing a new drippy reverb shootout soon, hopefully with a special guest.
@@60CycleHumcast Nice, man! Can't wait to see it. Again, total jokes, especially coming from a guy with nothing but Ehx pedals on my own board. Love the vids man! Keep em coming!
This is probably a dumb question but does the EHX do a sort of ~regular~ reverb too? Like could this be my one and only reverb pedal to do both surfy and non surfy music ? Thanks :)
On the Spring setting did you use the Secondary Settings? I’m using this pedal with a Strat and I can’t quite get the quality of drip that you get. Or is it more a technique thing? Thanks
The only place I’ve seen it is on the Guitar Center app and it says it’s available this Friday on the 15th. But on their demo video there are several comments from people saying they’ve got it. So I don’t know where people are getting it.
Marcos Pintor that’s exactly how I feel. It’s $60 too. That’s a great price but there isn’t anything other than two demos on it and they’re made by TC Electronics. They’re not great examples to go off of either.
James_ 42_Art I saw those two demos and to me they don’t really sound like real drip. It sounds more like a slapback but like you said, they’re not super good demos and we’ll just have to wait. But honestly I think the Oceans 11 nailed the drip and I think it’ll be better than the tc electronic one
I can't justify the money for Strymon pedals. Unless you are a professional musician their pedals are not for the working class bar scene. Electro Harmonix seems to get that concept.
i actually like the oceans 11 the best out of the three of these. sounds really nice
Me too...I actually went for the Oceans 12.....too big a learning curve. Such a thing as too much. Traded down to the 11
Thanks for all you do for the surf community.
That oceans 11 sounds amazing
I LOVE that sound! Born in 63 and the ventures surfing album was in constant play at my house from crib to this day
nice, I was born in 81 but i grew up listening to the oldies stations and all the 'songs without singing' were the ones that made me want to play guitar.
I realy enjoy your reviews, Ryan. Its nice hearing someone playing something else than just metal, realy enjoy the surf rock you play.
The drip is what it's about. Most reverb pedal demonstrations go for settings not sought while skipping the most obvious and searched for,Drip! Surf guitar you bone heads! Start with the right premise. Forget the plates, and rooms, drip drip drip! Great demo. Started right ended right.
I watched a lot of reviews on this pedal but your video sold me, picked it up today. Thanks for the great demos.
This video sold me on the EHX months ago, haven't regretted it.
I’d love to see an Oceans 11 vs Surfy Bear shootout!
For price , accurate representation and other great Reverb, modulation, delay options , the 11 is a no brainer
Great great demo. Playing the surf licks we all want to hear. Bravo
The Oceans 11 sounds great!
This is the best video you have made, Ryan.
"That little drip at the end of the trail" actually sounds pretty cool.
Thanks for making this comparison video! Keep up the great work, Ryan!
Really appreciate you taking time out for us surf players. At the price, this'll do it for me. My FRV1 has been a bit of a thorn in my side.
Great demo. Glad I've gone for the EHX Oceans 11, the quality of the reverb more than holds its own against the out-of-my-price-range Ventris and Strymon Flint
Still love the Fender Boss 👍 Super collectible
Thank you for the great video man. Great comparison.
Before this video I though I get a boss for sure. But now even though the boss looks cooler the ocean 11 actually sounds better

WOW. I think i will go for the Oceans 11. Great sound and affordable. Will give a good substitute if i can't take the reverb tank with me.
You just helped me decide! Thanks, Oceans 11 seems to nail it.
the drip may be a bit better on the O-11, but I just got a Topanga and really like it a lot - the volume control was the selling point for me. Had an FRV-1 and sold it fast. Sounded too sterile. Also the Topanda sounds great in a live band setting.
You got this up quickly!
Nice.
Great demo.
Great demo, thanks for doing this.
O-11>Ventris>FRV-1 in my opinion.
A truly useful review / comparison! Thanks!
Man this sold me on an Ocean 11 I think but the Fender Boss with the Drive sounded amazing to me.
I watched these videos in the wrong order lol , you did kick the oceans 11 here 👍😊
THIS is what I'm looking for in a demo. Thanks a LOT! I have the FRV-1 and the drip is more than fine but it does NOT handle fuzz/drive/etc indeed. Sounds like EHX really has that part down as well! I already wanted to check it out but you convinced me. I need it.

J Steen do you think it’s worth it? I’m thinking about getting it, but wanna make sure it’s worth the money.
TheGoldenChicken Id say it depends what u want to do. It does a bunch of weird stuff lots of other reverb dont do. I have Hall of fame 2 and Boss Rv-6 and others too. J Steen thanks, yeah that’s exactly why I want it! I want something that’ll do some normal reverb but some awesome weird ambient stuff
TheGoldenChicken Awsome, I say you will enjoy it. I am having fun with it. Let me know what u think. Definitly look in the manual and check out the secondary options for each type of reverb, it makes this pedal even more feature filled. Have fun!
J Steen Alright, will do! Thanks for the info!
2:45 Tarantino approved! ;-)
You used it ones, and it won.
Will you do a more in depth review of the Oceans 11?
I will
60 Cycle Hum That's great! I'm considering buying one, and I trust your opinion (might be the cool shirts or the wacky taste on quirky guitars, dunno)
Like to see you compare the Mr. Black Super Swell spring reverb pedal to them.
HEY RYAN! MAN YOU ARE ADDICTED TO THE DRIP!!
I CAN'T QUIT THE DRIP!
THAT"S OK BECAUSE THE DRIP IS HIP! i can keep going all day with this!
The EH is great sounding I agree about the Boss one, I noticed it coloured the sound even on the cleans.
The Ventris vs. an original Fender reverb unit, please and thank you.
Sassy Cat I did that video a few months back, search for it. I’d link it but I’m away from my computer right now.
60 Cycle Hum - found it. ruclips.net/video/CnbnEevgoIw/видео.html
I think I'm in love with the Ventris. 😍

Ventris sounds kinda phaser-y & swirly at times, Ocean's 11 sounds more natural & doesn't change the tone as much imo
I've owned both the Oceans 11 and the Ventris and I prefer the EHX. The Ventris Outboard Spring Algorithm is spot on but I got tired of adjusting the myriad of settings on the Ventris and it just made me miss how simple the EHX was.
Oceans 11 sounds great but a little harsh on the high end at times, do you find "tone' and "time" can tame that a little bit?
Hi Ryan..just wondering why you have not try the True Spring setting to explores the drippy sound?..many thanks and Amazing videos and demos...Kudos
I give the Boss FRV-1 a lot of credit for driving up the market demand for a genuinely good drippy reverb, but I’m very happy to see technology catch up with the demand. The Boss has its charms but the Oceans 11 buries it. The Ventris is killer but way out of my price range. Whether it’s a predelay or not I just want it to COME OUT. That demo video for it came out like half a year ago. What is the freakin hold up TC????
Alex Nennig seriously
I would love to see you demo the "SoulDim Spring Reverb" its ridiculously cheap
You ever tried out the Tonebug Reverb??
Great video again. Love the Ventris but I could never afford it. I do own the frv1 and have bought the oceans 11 recently. I definitely prefer the frv1. Just keep the tone at 10 o clock and you're good. The Oceans 11 is too sterile for me.
I am very interested in the Surfy Bear though..
Thanks for all the videos, they're very helpful! X
where informtive thanks i new to play and i old too . but this great. it was great watching you play
I have little interest in any setting but the Spring which sounds great on this - I was just about to buy a Topanga, But now I am not sure which to buy ... the Topanga has a boost control which I like - Hmmmmmmm! Very Nice demo by the way.
The EHX sounds the best out of these 3.
The BOSS sounded the best with the gain up... aaaand another pedal on the wish list...
Great vid, I want to love the oceans but it’s too harsh n cold for me.
you sold me in the first 5 sec.... thanks!
Love the shirt!
Great demo, really highlighted the differences. How would you rate the Polara's drip in comparison to the Oceans 11 and the Ventris? Thanks!
I had a polara and wasn't happy with it.
Thanks for the feedback!:)
Sorry I sent my message before I got to the end of the video.
;-)
Have you got the ventris in dual engine mode, looks like 2 LEDs lit on the selector? Or is it just the true spring running in this demo?
What's your sound recording equipment?
You should make a comparison with Topanga Catalinbread
i like more the drip on the ehx, but the ventris has a warmer tone and smother decay
I think the oceans 11 sounds absolutely great. EHX has always made great sounding pedals. I haven't seen a bad one yet
Sincerely, at some points I felt the Ventris rather had a digital mid Q buzzing to it, strikingly more than the ocean. At some points, not always.
At the same time this slight distortion on the signal of oceans 11 reminds more of and old tube unit, as tubes always distort a lot at such high settings, something I didn't hear on the Ventris.
Good review. Oceans it is!!
what amp do you use?
How about the Subdecay Super Spring Theory pedal.. any good? Edit: Ah I see you reviewed it in another video
Thinking about returning my Ventris now...
I'm keeping mine
I'm not getting the same amount of drip that I'm hearing on your YT vid. About to try out some different guitars and amps with it. Maybe I'm the weak link!
did you load the offboard reverb setting with the update? you have to plug it into a computer and save it to a preset. if you are having trouble hit up Source Audio, they are very helpful.

Any idea how the Oceans 11 stands in comparison to Digitech Polara? Both spring-wise and different sounds?
I had a polara when they came out, I wasn't a fan.
My 11 doesn’t do the “kicked amp” thing 🤨
Double tap the foot switch.
Ventris or Oceans 11 for use with high gain distortion leads ? It would be interesting to review it with that in mind and compares the bypassed tones with the guitar through the pedal. Thanks for the demo Ryan! . As for nasty comments.....pink flamingos is a give up on the pink skin subject? XDXD.
Im pink, i can accept that.
This is the only reason I am considering selling my Oceans 11 and getting a Ventirs (or something else). I have found it colors the dry sound of the guitar more than a true bypass pedal. STill though...it's a tough choice as the Ocean's 11 does sound fantastic overall.
Yep, its an absolute tone killer. Mine lasted 10 mins then back to Ebay. Tiny, small font, so impossibly difficult on stage. Its a dud.
C. P. It’s a shame as the reverb sounds are great and the spring is one of the most authentic I’ve heard. If they ever released an improved version like they did with the canyon (and improved the dry signal problems) that would be a fantastic pedal. how do i play surf rock. im serious where and how can I learn to play surf rock
You've pretty much convinced me to get this pedal
Chad Hodge I haven’t even shown you the other settings yet!
60 Cycle Hum don't get me wrong, I'll watch that video too
EHX FTW!!!!!
Love this, but would love it even more if you always played exactly the same thing when comparing the pedals. Sometimes you do, but often you don’t.
Ryan, so in 2022, do you still keep the Boss FRV around at all, or have you completely moved on and moved it on? Just curious.
I sold the FRV-1 years ago and haven't regretted it. so many better options now.
Love the Oceans for the price point, I think I'm gonna get one!
On a more important note: Where can I get that awesome shirt?
Christoph Seifried old navy
Ryan, I heard this one song, one time only, did not know the name..OK, it was SO wet, it sounded like rain drops, dripping water, or a real small waterfall in a creek! How can I get it to actually sound like water dripping?
maybe if you get creative with some kind of envelope filter/auto wah you might be able to get closer to that sound. can you find the song?
Cant find it, did not know the name of it.. just heard it one time.. ok..thanks, if you have any other ideas for the wetter than wet tone, let us all know..thanks.
The fender sounds so clear but I still can’t decide because ocean 11... cmon man they hooked me with the name
This is awesome but I wish they sampled at least 3 spring kick sounds
The Hall setting on Oceans 11 is great with Drums.
They REALLY knocked it out of the park with this one. Definitely on my GAS list!
Thx you dude ! :D
5 years later.......old guy buys a used one......thank you!
Let's hear the double tap crash/shatter! 5:40!!
Ryan can you post the settings for the ventris you were running on this video
if i remember ill figure out how to share the file tomorrow.
60 Cycle Hum thanks my friend
What amp did you use.....thanks for the demo. Your channel is the best
princetone reverb + Ibanez TSA15h
Thanks :)
yes
Ryan as the surf reverb expert you are.. what you think of the holy grail nano?? Does it drip? Would appreciate your answer... Thanks!
inaki font I had an original holy grail and it didn’t drip
On the Spring setting did you use the Secondary Settings? I’m using this pedal with a Strat and I can’t quite get the quality of drip that you get. Or is it more a technique thing? Thanks
Jack Knife it’s technique, palm mite the notes you really want to drip
Try it against with ehx holy grail please :)
Please get the Drip by TC!! I must know if it’s good!
I keep asking for it and they don't send it! not sure whats up. Is it available to buy anywhere yet?
The only place I’ve seen it is on the Guitar Center app and it says it’s available this Friday on the 15th. But on their demo video there are several comments from people saying they’ve got it. So I don’t know where people are getting it.
It literally says drip on it so it better be good
Marcos Pintor that’s exactly how I feel.
Ventris has annoying chorus-like modulation on trails. Oceans hasn`t.
Agree, it has a weird modulation, like a flange or chorus
Ping ping ping ventrus. Good surf sound for sure
Didnt know that was called drip sound cool!
I can't justify the money for Strymon pedals. Unless you are a professional musician their pedals are not for the working class bar scene. Electro Harmonix seems to get that concept.
Should I swith my Topanga to the Ocean's 11?
The topanga is a great sounding reverb, but its not a true drip, it uses a pre-delay to simulate the feel of a drip in an effective way.
60 Cycle Hum than should I go for the Ocean's 11 if I'm looking for that vintage drip tone!?
yup
Anyone know the oceans 11 drop reverb will sound out of an orange amp?
