Oceans 11. Great bang for buck and still one of the best drip units outhere.
Disagree. Trail is noisy in a cartoon like way. it kinda disconnects from the original source.
However, the drip is much like the tank! haha
or you could save money and just get a holy grail
I own the Oceans 12 but I don't think this is a good spring reverb for surf musics. It does A LOT more however.
Just bought one, played with it for 2 hours and now am sending it straight back. Sounded like absolute garbage into a pro junior. So cheap and fake sounding. Every single mode was bad, and shimmer is cheesy. Like, just get ONE right instead of 11 WRONG.
Looper pedals have become the greatest tools for pedal shootouts.
Who knew that drip would be such a thing for me for so many years...I want the "DRIP FIGHT!" shirt! Oceans 11 for me.
Well, in my opinion, all of the pedals needed to be compared to the ‘63 Reverb unit & the one that got the closest to me was the Oceans 11.
I can confidently give this a thumbs up before I have time to view it. Looking forward to it! Would be into a stereo plate/hall/chamber/cathedral verb fight
Oh god, now i have to buy the Mr. Black Swell....
Thanks for the great comparisons :)
Thanks for this. Usually I hate RUclips guitar videos because I really can't make a tone judgment. But in this case the tone difference were clear and in the end I opted for a company I had never heard of - Topanga. And once I discovered them I opted for the Topanga Burnside for an extra $10. And the fact that I lived in Portland, OR for over 40 years was an added bonus. Also thanks for doing more than just surf tones, since I mostly play blues. Anyway thanks again for this video!
Doesn't matter how many pedals you add to a shootout, there'll always be idiots who comment "what about [insert pedal name]?!"
Great video. Enjoyed hearing the differences. That Stomp may be in my near future. Unless L6 announces something new at summer NAMM.
Love me some Los Straightjackets!
Ryan I hate and love at same time for showing me that I need more drip in my life. Dang.
springs n tubes still havent met defeat. fun demo vid and confirms my oceans 11 pick over my topanga. although the topanga at 18v is pretty tasty at the end of the signal chain.
For the price I thought the TC Drip was surprisingly good apart from the noticeable volume drop.
Love the spring king
Gotta go true spring here! Best with dirt by far as well
True spring Source Audio is the clear winner. plus it has killer tremolo
winner aside from the actual fender reverb unit. None of the pedals sound anything like it.
6G15, Surfy Bear, and True Spring. I returned my Ocean's 11 because it killed my ears when I cranked the amp up. I ended up having mojotone build me a 6G15. I did the surfy bear build as well, but I still haven't got it to work right. Thanks for the Video
Same story with my surfy bear, why yours not working?
after all that, I have to say, my personal favorites, in no particular order, were the Surfy Bear, True Spring, Oceans 11 and Tre-Verb. I thought those 4 sounded better than even the real Fender unit, in the context of what was played
I had the Faux Spring. It was lush and big but did not get me there for surf so I sold it. I bought the Dual Ventris ($$$$) and used it successfully on a few recordings (spaghetti western) but it was just too much to deal with. I didn't use it much and sold it. I'm going to get the Helix stomp for everything but the Reverb. From this list, I'm still on board to get an Oceans 11. It has drip and more. Thanks to Ryan for reviews like this!
Best reverb pedal, reasonably cheap, not on here - Dr Green The Cubicle. Fantastic thing. A Bd it with loads of others including a Boing by j Rocket and it always wins. Really 3d and has a slight modulation dependent on picking volume
I really like the sound of that Le Bon.
Yeah same--I picked up the Anasounds unit after this review
I love my oceans 11 but I really need that new Fender Tre-Verb!!
I love my True Spring and my FRV, but I, also, really need that Tre-Verb!
Thanks for the video! I would like a shootout with the real contenders: Fender Unit, TreVerb,Oceans 11, True Sring,Surfy Bear, Boss Fender, Topanga. I want to like the Oceans cos it is in a sensible price range for me but unlikely I think I prefer the True Spring that is difficult for me to justify buying it and they are not coming out in the second hand market. May be TreVerb vs True Spring? That is a must do! Pedals I missed in this wide shootout: Strymon Flint and Neubaer.
That's a great demo. Fun to hear the differences, some really nice ones and some that are surprisingly not-so-great.
The EHX Ocean's 12 has tone knobs for brightness and also adjustments for the spring size and modulation, one just has to get in there if it's sounding too bright or hearing digital trails. It's very adjustable. Spring-wise in a pedal, I think they do a great job. I know the Ocean's 11 has tone adjustment too, I don't know if it's as extensive as the 12. I love it. Makes me write cool surf music. Inspiring sounds from it. The other cool thing is you can double click on the spring setting and get a spring kick as one would on a real spring tank. I only buy reverb pedals that can do a convincing spring tone. The other reverbs are nice too. While I have an older Fender Showman which has a real spring tank in it, I run the Ocean's 12 through the back of a Marshall Plexi...dirty surf music sound. Love it.
Best shootout yet.
The Source Audio sounds amazing, but the TC Drip sounded actually better than the Oceans 11
You can't beat the springs on Fender amps. The True Spring and the Wampler did sound really good though.
Hey Ryan, thanks so much for doing this, true public service! How about giving us your opinion and conclusions as well? For me, the original 6g15, followed closely by the Surfy Bear are by far the best of the bunch. The only emulation i liked was the True Spring and, for a very vanilla but highly versatile version, the Tre-Verb, somewhat. Surprised how digital the tail on the Oceans 11 sounded and how vanilla the Super Swell sounded as well, given the hype surrounding it. Would love to hear your personal findings, though.
I got a tone city little spring and thought it was just ok up to about 12 o clock, any thing past that gets too warble-ey. Still loving my Topanga and kokko "SPACE" which is a hall type, but surprisingly deep and musical sounding. That surfy bear looks fun! Thanks for your demo
my fav - tc electronics drip - to go with my other 9 tc electronic pedals....good stuff maynerd !!!!!
Topanga!!! Sounded closest to the real thing.
Hey Rayan! Include the spring reverb from kemper using the dripstone control to the max! The best digital drip reverb that I ever heard!
Thanks, made me decisive decision
I commend your ingenuity 👏
The real thing was the best but the dark world came closest to that in my opinion. Second runner up... oceans 11.
But none could hang with the Fender reverb tank. So warm and gooey.
Tre-Verb for the pedal winner imho.
Nice video...love me some 'verb. As an owner of the Topanga I wanted to reach through the screen and turn the mix knob to 3 o'clock
This time around:
1) DarkWorld
2) NU-X Atlantic
3) ANA Sounds (clean)
4) Tre-Verb (65)
5) True Spring
I guess it depends on what day you get out of bed on. 🎸😎🤙🏄
Sassy Cat the dark world isnt the least bit drippy, you may prefer it but honestly I think the closest to the og reverb tank is the oceans 11
Great i use the EHX Oceans 11 and the danelectro also
Awesome man. Thank you!
Mr Black IS Mr. Badass,as are the True Spring and Fender;" Le Bon" , some a** tearing nastiness with the drive, and the Topanga doing that thing CB circuits seem want to do, - just be cool.Nice to have the wealth of options, for an effect that looms large in the mind's ear.
The Fender tank sounded the best to me (no shocker there, it’s THE sound we’re testing the others against here), however the True Spring easily wins second place by being 95% as good as the real thing. Oddly enough, the Surfy Bear was noticeably harsh compared to the Fender and frankly didn’t sound as good as the True Spring. And I still don’t know how you make the Oceans 11 sound that good. The one I had didn’t do what you can make yours do. I’m also surprised by how bad most of the boutique offerings are when it comes to spring emulation. Wampler and Anasounds and a few others were just plain bad compared to the True Spring or even the Oceans 11. Yikes.
Oceans 11: Behind the real Fender Tank the Ocean 11 is the pedal to surf. This pedal drips like hell and has the present sound like a wave of '63. Most pedals are good but to warm or harsh (le bon). The Ocean 11 is like whip striking to highness!
I have an Oceans 11 and while the spring reverb really 'drips', it find it also quite harsh ... I think I'll sell it and buy a Source Audio True spring instead, which for me seems by far the best pedal out there for spring reverb.
Nu-X Atlantic, best decay imo,
Oceans 11 has so much potential, too bad there's that bright, digital artifact to it. If EHX could soften that or hide it somehow for a V2, it could reach the level of the Source Audio.
The prominence and noisiness is much like the tank but yes too bright.
Wow, HX Stomp kinda sounds like junk.
Indeed! Total rubbish.
@@christiaandemarezoyens4720 have the hx effects, yes the spring is bad...
Nothing compares to an outboard reverb unit except maybe the Surfy Bear.
Still, after all those years, the Boss FRV with the True Spring up there with it!
I have the True Spring after owning; Flint, Topanga, Oceans 11, Subdecay Super Spring Theory, Digiverb, Boss '63. I like it but the weird phasey decay is annoying.
it sounds great, but i hate that the tremolo doesnt have seperate knobs and switches like the Tre-Verb
How about compare topanga with true spring? I want to buy to topanga but i considered with true spring source audio
If I was going to play in a surf band, I'd get the Tre-Verb, no doubt. The Boss sounded good, so did the Source Audio. I was really surprised how the HX Stomp sounded, like it was deteriorating the signal or something.
Surfy Bear huge sound.
Christ, there's paint dripping all over the place!
EH sounds good my favorite!!
True Spring and Oceans 11 take it to me.
The surfybear is always my favourite. You cant get them in the UK.
I wish the spring king didn't sound so weak.
andertons
Thought I'd add some quicklinks for those looking to go back and forth ....
1:36 Fender tank
2:20 Catalinbread Topanga
3:04 Boss/Fender FRV-1
3:47 Fender Tre-Verb (63 setting)
4:31 Fender Tre-Verb (65 setting)
5:15 Surfy Bear
5:59 Super Swell Classic Spring Reverb
6:44 Danelectro Spring King
7:28 Source Audio True Spring (tank setting)
8:13 TC Electronic Drip
8:57 Electro-Harmonix Ocean's 11
9:41 Nux Atlantic
10:25 Wampler Faux Spring Reverb
11:09 Dr. Scientist The Atmosphere
11:56 Chase Bliss Dark World Dual Reverb
12:40 Anasounds Le Bon
13:29 Anasounds Le Bon (dirty setting)
14:15 Line6 HX (63 Spring setting)
appreciate it!
I knew the spring king wouldn't shine but damn I'm disappointed considering it has an actual spring inside. I wonder if replacing the spring could make it sound better?
the spring is only part of the equation with surf reverb, the circuit its self is super important and the spring kind just doesnt have a circuit that allows it to sound like a surfy fendery unit. Ive had it open before though and dont remember thinking a spring transplant would be easy.
If you get the chance to try out a digitech polara, do it. It's got crazy good drip. I'd say it's on the same level as the Oceans 11 overall.
No Digitech Polara? Drips more/better than the Boss and Topanga
that surfy bear..............
Apart from the 6g15 I actually liked the True Spring best.
Yep!
Tc-electronic and wampler these are my favourite 👍
Have you seen the MOD wave unit. It's a do it yourself rack mount tube reverb kit. Would like to see more stuff on it
Always enjoy your reviews! Im curious if you have done a review on mr black deluxe ++ reverb pedal? I would love to get your opinion on that one.
The Surfy Bear would have been the best if it had an accutronics tank or if the settings were turned down a bit.
The Oceans 11 sounded closest to me, very drippy, with great clarity and dynamics.
The True Spring and the FRV-1 are good but sounded a bit muffled in comparison.
That jag is a butie 😍
Dylan Vogel that’s not a jag you doofus 😂
Marcos Pintor sorry jazzmaster 😂
Dylan Vogel lol
that topanga hit different tho
For what it does I was surprised at how authentic the Topanga sounded.
the topanga still holds up! its honestly a 'sound better' box even if you aren't using it as a drippy reverb, it has a preamp/boost quality to it.
@@60CycleHumcast It might be just me but some of those other reverbs either sounded dark or dropped out your tone somehow. Listening to the Topanga was like hearing the actual Dick Dale and 60s surfer recordings. It might only do one reverb but it does it really really well.
i think its drip isn't quite correct/authentic, but the surfy tonality is there for sure.
Wow, that was a lot of Verbage.
Changed my mind about a few pedals.
Thanks 👍
Personally I like the Wampler Faux Spring
Surprised by the lack of spank the emulations had compared to the OG. Hmmm.
fender is the classic
60 cycles of Reverb...
Cowabunga!
Here goes my all nighter .. 🤔🧐
Ever tried the T-Rex bug Reverb? The crème one. Has a surprisingly good reverb and it's a pretty unsung pedal.
I’m pretty sure I did a video on one.
@@60CycleHumcast I think I missed that one. My bad. You were kind of out of my feed for a while. Been following you since the beginning days. Recently got myself a jazzmaster and searched that now you're all over my feed again. Good Times.
Wow...the surfy bear sounded kind of harsh....would it be the box that the unit is put into that would effect it that way? I also still cant figure out how you get the FRV to sound that good. I have a love/hate relationship with it. Thanks for that great shootout!
Put the True Spring behind it, dial out the ice-picks and you get an awesome sound!
I own a tre-verb. I'm happy with it, there are a lot of creativity possibilities. I also own a verbzilla, and on the 63 reverb it sounds just as good if not better than the tre verb, you just have to know how to dial it in.
Do you still have it?
@@shckltnebay yep
@@sumyupee Its it still working for you? Im looking at the anasounds reverb that connects to a tank
@@shckltnebay I use my amps spring Reverb, primarily. I have a fender Super Reverb.
@@sumyupee Very nice Ive got a real 68 princeton but have two Champ IIs with no reverb that I use in the living room
Where is the Milkman Sound F-Stop? Did it come out after this video?
really impressed by topanga... so close to the original fender
Oceans 11 is the winner. Can you compare this pedal with a zoom G1on's 63 reverb????That would be great!
Ok so I like the oceans 11 and the Faux spring but what was Ryans favorite "in the room" and "on the tape" or were they the same one the actual fender spring reverb?
I owned the Faux Spring and sold it. Not enough/any drip.
Ever do a Keely hooke demo? Kind of stuck between that and an oceans 11
is there a noticeable Volume drop with the DRIP TC Electronic pedal ? thanks
True Spring wins it
💧💧💧
Are we still gonna get a dod 250 vs line 6 I think it would be cool to hear the difference since I haven’t play a 250 but have been using the top secret od on the line 6 and I like it a lot
yes, eventually
No Strymon Flint? I'd love to hear a comparison with Oceans 11 and the real Fender reverb,
Andrea Alesi we had one awhile ago back when we did the Wheel of Pedals show. Unfortunately we don’t have one any more. - steve
Dark world
Hey I have a source audio true spring and with certain amps I notice very high frequencies like in the 10k range that are super annoying. They are there no matter what with my blues jr. I don't hear them at all with my tweed princeton. But it is a much warmer amp. I have heard others complain about piercing frequencies with other digital reverbs.
Phrygian Bear just let go of that digital reverb, especially when playing your super nice all tube amps.
Real spring is the only way to go!
Why insert harsh 1 and 0s to a nice and mellow analog signal?
Of course: this is highly subjective and only my useless personal opinion.
@@rolux4853 I did end up getting rid of it. I'll never buy anything from source audio again. I have found that I've never really been totally satisfied with any digital reverbs or delays.
what did you use for your dirty tone????????? sounded incredibleeeee
Should have thrown a ghost echo in, would have loved to know how it sounds compared to the others
i dont have one
60 Cycle Hum you should fix that problem ;) best EQD and always switched on my board.
Line 6 Verbzilla FOR LIIIIIFFFFFFEEEEEEE... it gets extra points in my book for being completely unsexy and ugly AF
Did you always play the riffs on those pickups? Never realised that before. I thought is was always just the bridge. :o Anyway great video, i love that you did each one individually. The last time it was a great comparison but less comfortable to listen to :3 *with love, Stephen.*
i did the different pickups this time just to show how the pedals react to different settings, also i picked settings that would work best with each riff.
@@60CycleHumcast yeah they did sound good! never realised the baja riff was a necky :)
GunsNRoosendael it might be 🤷♂️ the astronauts tone is a source of constant debate.
@@60CycleHumcast on my guitar a 'middle' pickup blend works best apparently :D so i guess it also depends on gear...
Great vid - question do you lose any headroom from your amp when putting the Fender 6G15 in front and does it change your amp tone at all?
Yes and yes. The unit will drive your amp a little, especially at low reverb settings. It does change the tone a little, like a subtle sweetening. You’re running your signal through another preamp and set of tubes, so that’s gonna change things a bit
Anasounds is the best.
I thought the Mr black pedal sounded great. The outboard fender reverb was fantastic of course. The anasounds sounded really good too and that was the smallest tank. Probably would of sounded even better with the middle tank. I have all three tanks and I prefer the middle and the small one over the large personally. The middle size tank it's drippier than the small. In my opinion. Great video.
if you hook up the element to the same tank that goes in the fender unit it sounds a lot closer
60 Cycle Hum That's interesting. I've been wanting to experiment with other tanks and the element. I also was curious about possibly swapping out the tank in my princeton with one of the anasounds tanks just to see what it sounds like and vice versa. I haven't looked into if that is even possible yet. It sounds like you did some experiments already. So, you took the element itself (the brain let's say) and ran the fender tank with the element. Is that what your saying or did I misunderstand.
@@guyfromnj What you don't hear from your Princeton is due to the difference in circuitry, not so much the tank. It's a pretty easy exercise, just plugging some rca jacks, but i'd bet you'd be surprised as to how little difference it'll make provided the tanks have the same length and number of springs.
Kinda want a tank switching system, series, parallel, etc...
Yeah, middle tank for vintage, large for surf, saturation for.... almost never
I liked them all except for the A's LeBon (I guess it's called), found that one harsh and displeasing.
the tank is too small. you need a long tank for proper drip
What's the rock bottom bargain basement cheapo dripper?
i hate spring reverb emulation so this was pure torture. i made it through though, interesting video.
why did you even watch this video? lol
60 Cycle Hum That’s a True Fan. 😎👏
@@60CycleHumcast i do enjoy your videos. and i wanted to hear what setting you had landed on with The Atmosphere. also i like to bother my ears, test the limits of endurance.
seriously
