I have owned a sauna for about 17 years. I have one that is far infrared that I have now in my home and a full spectrum sauna at my massage business with led light therapy. I have done a lot of research and what I understand is that the infra red wave lengths penetrate anywhere from 4-6 inches into the body and release heavy metals and other toxins in the tissues to be released through sweat. I’ve read that they have studied the sweat to find this. But I love the way I feel regardless of what it’s doing! Thanks for the video!
My city (here in Ontario Canada) has the largest population of Finnish people outside of Finland, which means we have a 💩 load of saunas it’s awesome!!! ❤️😊
That’s awesome!!

I bought the Healix sauna blanket and returned it. I like a real sauna. The blanket didn't even get warm enough to sweat. The pictures of the people sweating is deceiving. Loved the information here as always :)
I cut my adult teeth in Europe. We sauned every Monday where we spent three hours getting in and out of the sauna. Always plunging into cold water and then rest with hydration. Repeat. It was a beautiful ritual. Winter we sauned more often. Since Covid, I’m out of the ritual.
It’s now forbidden for men over 40 who are not in excellent physical condition. It can bring on a heart attack.
Thanks for sharing. It's interesting how now popular things like saunas (we use steam bathes), farm to table, organic foods & other "discoveries" are what we (Yup'ik eskimo) native people have been doing for generations.
Thank you for being here with us !
Another benefit of the sauna…good time for prayer/meditation, which is good for your spiritual and mental health.

... good Lord.. if I live in Houston, Texas, does that count as a sauna for about 9 months of the year?!🤒 Just kidding! I did really used to enjoy the dry sauna at the gym. I should bring that back into my routine. (Along with actually going to said gym that I'm paying for 😂)
😂 love this
@ataylor1604-- hey fellow Houstonian! I thought the same thing! Looks like sauna season is starting early for us 😅.
Penn, I’ve learned so much from you - thank you! ❤️ But having lived with melasma for 16 years, I’ve learned that heat triggers my melasma. A sauna would undo all of the progress I’ve made. 😊
Thank you @pennsmith. I bought the blanket ❤️
Just purchased the sauna blanket. So excited, thanks Penny 💜💜
When I am able to I’m definitely going to purchase a walk-in sauna. I agree that are so many benefits to doing a sauna.
How about just night sweating from hot flashes. I think I’m getting the same effect lol. Lovely
Hahaha!! Yeah me too lol

Hi penn I like your information and all your research you do and your fun videos I’m learning ❤
Thanks so much Penn!! What a generous discount too. Hopefully they will have some more good discounts around the holidays. I'm saving up. 😘
Thanks so much for sharing. You’ve convinced me to add this to my routine.
Thanks, Penn. Very interesting items listed. Question in regards to brain health (ie: dementia, alzeimers), does the sauna blanket (head is not exposed to sauna) offer the same benefits as the walk-in (fully immersed) sauna?
Thank you ❤
I'm not familiar with benefits for dementia or Alzheimer's, but the sauna blanket she has is an infrared sauna. So it uses infrared to heat up core temperature rather than the traditional sauna with steam. So you should still be getting the benefits even though your head isn't exposed. I would reach out to Higher Dose (company that makes it) and ask. They are knowledgeable and make really good products. Generally speaking most resources consider infrared to be healthier. I'm not affiliated with Higher Dose. I just have the same exact blanket and really like it.
Hello from Finland! Just had sauna today, also yesterday. But the real one not the bag one.But I would also like to have infrared sauna too, in that bag form very practical! Just remember to throw WATER on the stones in real saunas. I caused horror multiple times in gym and hotel saunas in USA as I have done that. The dry low heat is NOT bringing any health benefits. Its not hot enough. EDIT also if you can, use a cold shower in between the heat. Will bring health benefits up even more. I have a sea 2 min walk away from my home so I can go and swim in spring when the sea is still really cold. Some swim in winter too.
Hello, could you please explain the cold shower in between? Do you mean take a cold shower after being on sauna and then going back to sauna or in between days that you are using the sauna? Thanks
Fantastic information! I really need to incorporate this along with my red light. Thanks for sharing!💜

Is steamed or dry sauna best?
I keep on learning from you! You're awesome!! Thank you very much, mam🩷🩷🩷
In Europe it's quite popular and I used sauna quite a lot when I was younger. Now, I'm a bit affraid due to my melasma. Do you think I should avoid it or maybe not?
Heat can flare melasma- so if I were you I’d try the public option to test before ever investing in a home sauna. 🩷
Do steam rooms have the same benefits? I have a steam shower but not a dry sauna.
Such a great video, I don't usually bother with a sauna but will now! How long do you recommend to sit inside one?
20 minutes is great!
I absolutely hate heat. And I hate a hot face. I have pondered the blanket bc it keeps your head out of the heat. I wish I could rent one of those things to see if I could commit/tolerate it.
Sauna is a great detox. Yes skin is one of detoxifying organs - especially if liver is not working very well. And the heat opens the "path ways" in our body. That's why it's great for everything.
You don't look puffy ever.
Prettier. I go to the gym.
Never sauna. How long do u sit in sauna?
Hi ! Thank you for this information. I do feel so good when I have gone into
A sauna my only concern is that. Doesn’t heat make Melasma worse. ?
Yes, heat definitely can flare melasma. Unfortunately it’s hard to predict who will or won’t be sensitive to heat. If you know that heat flares your melasma and you’re interested in sauna, I’d try it at a gym, spa etc before investing in one! 🩷

What is the difference for infared or issues with EMF? What are the different Qualities?
Use the Sauna once a week at gym. Love it.
Nice!!
@penn.smith.skincare Does it matter what type of sauna it is to reap the benefits? (Steam, Infrared, Dry?)
There’s debate on this- but in general as long as the temp is high enough both types of sauna have great benefits.
One of the nice things about living in South Korea is these people love sauna!!!
I had a Low EMF, two person infared Sauna for 3 years , saw some benefits. My friend , works for the city so had access to a Professional EMF meter. Soon as I saw the radiation readings , Sold it Online! Have You had Your Sauna Tested and What are the Long Term EMF Affects ?
I haven’t had it tested, I will do that!
What are the effects of emf?
ABSOLUTELY! TEST FOR YOURSELF, DON'T ASK THE COMPANIES!!! VERRRY VERRRY DANGEROUS. 👍 😮
How long do you sit in your walk in sauna?
Our phones too
Love this post, Penn. Shocks to the body have been linked to improved cognitive health...fasting, sprinting, blasts of heat (sauna), cold plunge.
Yes!
Infrared sauna after weights 🧡🧡🧡
Ok goofy question. We’ve had an infrared sauna for many years. I get my hair blown out every week because I have extremely thick dry and coarse hair. I want to do sauna more than one time a week (I usually did it the night before my blowout) any tips on keeping my hair from getting sweaty and greasy? I use a headband and pull it up in high bun.
Honestly my hair is my biggest challenge with sauna.
I try to time my sauna this way:
I’ll sauna in the evening and let my hair just dry (no where to go, nothing to do etc). Then I’ll sauna the next morning early and wash my hair after.
If I do that rotation twice a week I get 4 sauna sessions in.
So for you you could sauna in the evening, sauna the next AM early then get your blowout. Get as many days as you do and repeat the process (and you wash and do your own hair if you get pro blowouts and don’t want to do that twice a week).
Just an idea! 🩷
I see you have a red light sauna is that what you are speaking to specifically? Can any sauna have the same benefits? Thanks.
Do you suggest a dry sauna over a wet/steam type?
They’re both great. I personally prefer full spectrum but steam sauna is still fundamentally good sauna 🩷
Can we sit in a hot car in the summer ? Is that the same effects of a sauna ? Serious question
I would love to know if you’ve found a cheat code for melasma. I LOVE sauna too, but felt like I had to give it up because of the heat trigger ☹️
Ugh I’m so sorry!! It must be something in each of us bc sauna doesn’t flare mine but heat with sun (even when I am out of the sun but it’s hot) will get me every time. I truly don’t understand the reason for those two very different reactions.
😕

Penny, I have an important question. Do you think sauna triggers melasma? I heard that heat can trigger it.
Yes it definitely could- it doesn’t mine but heat is a trigger and saunas are hot.
If you have melasma and want to try sauna I would try it at a gym or spa before investing in one

@@PENNSMITHSKINCARE thank you so much! I would really love your feedback on it❤️❤️
So weird, I replied about the length in sauna but it’s not here 🤔
I sit in the sauna for about 40 minutes- really longer than I should or need to. I enjoy it so much….but I should shoot for 20-30 minutes 😍
@@PENNSMITHSKINCARE also, what temperature do you usually keep it on?
I usually am between 155-162
Rarely get up to the highest temp in the walk in.
In the blanket I set it at 9 and let it “preheat” for 30 minutes or so.
I started out at 5 and worked up 🩷
Thanks Penn! Do you still get the benefits of lymphatic drainage using a sauna blanket which obviously doesn’t cover the face? Anyone know the difference in terms of benefits of dry sauna versus steam? I am so tempted by sauna blankets. There is a huge variance in price, some on Amazon with good reviews around $300 going up to higher end sauna blankets like higher dose.

@@PENNSMITHSKINCARE so much great information. My shower has a steam sauna setting that I need to get back into using. The problem with steam saunas is they necessitate a hair washing so I just need to plan accordingly. That’s one reason the blankets are so appealing 😀
The hair washing is definitely a kink in the works!! I used to wash my hair 2 times a week at most…..now it’s more often and it takes planning on my part. I think it might be the one major downside of sauna….but I’ll do it for the benefits 😁🩷
How long do you set in there
Minimum of 20 minutes for me- and often more than 30 🙃
Hi Penn! Are you still microneedling?!
Hi Penn. Love your channel. Does sauna cause melasma to flare? Thank you.
Thank you!
Heat can, yes. I haven’t noticed mine flare in sauna heat but in warm temps with sun (even out of the sun) my pigment gets worse. I don’t know why one flares me and the other doesn’t.
There is no doubt others with melasma will have it flare in sauna heat. If you have melasma and you’re wanting to try sauna I’d try it at a gym, spa etc before investing in an at-home sauna.

Hi Penn!! What about for Melasma with the heat?
It’s a concern for sure.
It’s interesting because I do not notice a flare at all in sauna heat but in heat from the sun I absolutely notice more pigment than just from the rays.
I need to find an expert to understand the mechanism of action that might make the heat different.
That said, if you know that heat flares your melasma I would definitely do a test run at a gym or spa before ever buying a sauna. 🩷
The Skintelligent book book says heat doesn’t cause melasma 🤷♀️
@@theeprincess777 I’m thinking it depends on the individual. I know my runs in the summer, even with a large brimmed hat and thick coat of sunscreen makes my melasma worse. I won’t give up my outdoor runs for the sake of vanity, but fall and wintertime are a great relief for my pigmentation 😊
@@theeprincess777 Interesting.
Same here. Heat triggers my melasma. I wear a hat every time I step outside in the summer, and am constantly applying sunscreen. It’s a battle every summer. 😔

I’ve had mine over a year and a half. No problems so far! I’ve even folded it up and put it in my trunk to travel lol
So far so good 😊🩷

Unfortunately, due to a lasting side effect of a neurological disease, I can’t tolerate even briefly the heat from a sauna, whether dry or steam. It causes me to tingle and itch from head-to-toe-even inside my mouth, nose and ears. It’s maddening! Can’t tolerate a hot tub, either.
I am so sorry to hear that! Sending hugs 🤗
But what about malasma penny? I know that heat makes it worst ? ❤
Melasma is definitely a contradiction!
Can always count on you to go straight to the research.
Can the heat cause melasma get worse??
In some people, it can. And that includes me, sadly.
Yes, it is a an unfortunate contradiction.

I’ll be researching this!
You didn’t talk about the different types of saunas. You should probably be specific about the type of sauna you are using. There are differences between using an infrared sauna and the old school steam type saunas. For people new to the sauna conversation, they will be very confused about what type of sauna you’re talking about and whether any type of sauna shows these benefits or just the infrared.
That’s why I suggested people go to the blog. Check it out, it’s extensive.
There are benefits from both wet and dry sauna.

I’d be extremely cautious with rosacea skin, yes.
Likewise with cold plunge/cold therapy.

Hi Penny!
Would you say you sweat as much with the blanket as with walk in? I’m sure the walk in is just amazing! 🩵
It takes me longer TO sweat but when I do I sweat as much.
If I plan ahead and preheat the blanket enough I do sweat more quickly.
