Thank you so much for posting this vid, I have been trying to track down a misfire for a long time, and never thought to remove the heat shield and look underneath, turns out there was a massive crack almost the same as yours. Time to weld her up, has your weld held over time or did the crack continue?

Thanks Jon! It would be awesome to check out your car one day at arroyo seco. Im in Roswell and go to Cruces regularly. One day id like to go to a superlap event and check it out.
Wow suddenly having this issue on my wifes car- seems to be better as it warms up, i will definitely check for cracks. All the other stuff you checked for i did as well and im left scratching my head.
Nice work. I had to change the donut gasket pre-cat on my offroad rig a '96 GEO Tracker and a bunch of the catalist material fell out. Being its offroad use only I grabbed my 16" x 3/4 drill bit and put a few holes through to free it up the rest of the way. Guess it melted when I was towing my 4wheeler lol.
I own a 1998 Honda Civic DX 2 dr. hatchback and it has been driving me crazy at times since July. It would have rough starts. It would occasionally stall. The throttle body was cleaned which helped to some degree. The check engine light had came on, but then it went out on its own. Then the main relay was found to be faulty. That was also replaced. Then the car ran much better, but it still was not 100%. I have had one stall. Today I was driving and I got behind a fool in a Volvo going on the slow side. I was going uphill and around 32-33 M.P.H. and I could tell that the automatic transmission was in overdrive by the slow engine speed. Then the check engine light came on. After about a another mile or so of driving, the engine refused to respond to the accelerator. As a matter of fact, it felt like it was going to stall. I think that it went into safe mode (limp mode). I pulled off the road and found a safe place to stop the car. I turned off the engine. A few moments later, I restarted it. This reset things and the engine responded to the accelerator. I was able to get home safely. I started to look things up and found there could be a few things causing my issue. I might decide to get an OBD II device to check the diagnostic code or possibly go to Autozone. My car has the D16Y7 engine. Do you have any advice upon how to try and fix this issue.
It might be one of the solenoids on the transmission. There are 2 that may have faltered and it's pretty common. Those will make the car run poorly if it even runs.
@@GarageBuiltHondas I did get the check engine light diagnosed at Autozone. The fault was the MAP sensor. That was replaced and it wasn't too expensive. The car is running better now. I don't think that I'm completely out of the woods as I did get a stall when after I started the car once, I quickly shifted the transmission out of park into drive. The good thing with the car is that the engine uses very little oil and the transmission is still O.K. I know that transmission issues have occurred on some Honda, but it is mostly with the Accord and the Odyssey minivans. The transmission issues have been surfacing even with recent Oyyessy minivan and if you watch Scotty Kilmer's channel, he suggests avoiding them. According to Consumer Reports, many recent Odyessy minivans have been plagued by in-vehicle electronics issues.
Yes definitely should be pre-heated with a torch all around the metal that way it helps everything stay straight and you should drill holes at the beginning in the end of the crack somebody told me it helps make it stronger and stop running
My 91 EF Civic has a crack all the way around practically on the exhaust manifold as well but mine at least has 420000 km so I think it deserves to have a crack didn't make much difference though I haven't bothered to do anything with it anyways my head gasket went cuz super heat of the head oops ran out of water
I’m not going to tell a guy how to weld but I can show ya scar or two from welding in rubber gloves. Very cool that you found the fix and gives guys another thing to check when diaging a similar problem.
It will probably crack again next to the weld, I've tried welding some cast manifolds in the past but had better luck with stuff like chemical metals. But on my old 98 Civic with the same manifold, when it cracked it was just easier to replace it with a cheap aftermarket header and a cheap generic cat.
my d14 civic has a slight hesitation accelerating in 4000rpms and in very low rpms. Not all the time but it is annoying. I have replaced the stock dizzy, the cables, checked the maf sensors, the racv sensor, the plugs. The problems remains. Also, consumption is relatively high. The car is as fast as it used to be. The header is a dc ceramic coated but it has some rust on it and i places you can't check it easily. Do you think it could be that?

This is the exact problem that happened with my ek civic, got it welded, applied the ultra copper gasket. I waited exactly 24 hours before turning it on and testing, It worked initially but after driving it and letting it idle the problem came back. I got a b16a2. When the engine is in operating temperature, the following thing happens if I shut off the car and crank it again (let's say when I park to wait for someone, like 5-10 minutes: 1) goes to 1500 on the crank 2) falls to 1000-1100 for 3 seconds or so after the car starts working 3) drop to 500 and a small tremble happens as if it's going to stall 4) goes up to 900 and sticks still, where it runs smooth as silk. What is this? The car is bone stock, runs and accelerates fine, engine is in pristine condition. What might it be? We have cleaned and checked everything. Thanks a lot in advance, liked and subbed!
bringing this back, i have the same issue, and the stumble stops after 2k rpms, even at idle, it goes from 250 idle to 1k rpm, kind of annoying, i have replaced literally everything you have, might just buy an aftermarket header and get rid of the cat all together
I asked a friend who owns a shop. He was/is a Honda Master Tech and he said the o2 sensors are picky and small variations like this will do exactly what it was doing.
Hey man, do you know of any pre-made tubular front crash bars for EF? I can't seem to find anything except EG and EK. I'm looking to mount an intercooler from one and also save weight, while making it simple to remove from the car.
Can you by pass that style Cat/Ex-Manifold and just Purchase a Ebay Header.? I live in Oregon and Dont have DEQ Or inspection For Tags? Just want My car to Run like it should?
Garage Built Hondas ok just saying seen multiple cast manifolds continue to crack even after welded and you should of preheated the manifold for better Penetration
No prob man. I sold the car about an hour after the last clip in the video. I had been getting it ready for someone. If we get a solid year out of some simple welds, then that works for us. 👍
I have a 1996 Civic D16 sometimes when I stop at a light after 20 seconds or so I hear a click and the engine light comes on then when I go to take off the car bucks like crazy and is very hard to drive. The engine light says it's the IAC motor but it's been replaced twice It doesn't happen all the time and never when the a/c is on. I think it's whatever controls the IAC motor maybe a relay or ECM not sure ..
Or a wiring issue also. I would first just check the plug. Sometimes the connections inside get corroded and may not produce a great connection between the wiring and the IACV itself.
That injector trick only tells u if they r "operating" that by no means tells u if it is spraying correct pulse patterns and it doesnt tell u the balance rate or flow rate of it. An injector can be leaking or be clogged and still "click" same with unplugging them. Sometimes its that easy but some times injectors are more complex to diagnose properly than that. The screwdriver trick doesnt really work as an answer in the real work for real customers wanting to trust a technician..
And that's what I was trying to get at, if they are "operating". I've worked on and owned over 40 different 88-00 civics/Integra which I'm sure plenty had injectors which weren't operating a peak performance and perfect flow between a set of 4. But as long as they were operating well enough to still be fully functional is what I wanted to help narrow down for anybody.
@@GarageBuiltHondas yeah but im a cheap ass so looking for them discounted. @@GarageBuiltHondas I saw EricTheCar Guys troublshooting guide. My Civic has a leak, maybe from the water pump that I have not fixed and just kept topping every 2 weeks. Garage Built Hondas well I haven’t started the car in one year now. My Integra has been on hold due to life and also trying to get my Civic track ready. The intake manifold is still off (replacing with skunk2), and the whole dash board is still out after installing the Rywire engine harness.
I really have no idea especially since you've cleaned and checked everything.
So this was my issue I had in my single cam🤦🏽♂️ oh well I have a b20 swap now!
My man
bringing this back, i have the same issue, and the stumble stops after 2k rpms, even at idle, it goes from 250 idle to 1k rpm, kind of annoying, i have replaced literally everything you have, might just buy an aftermarket header and get rid of the cat all together
i don't have civics but i like this vid:D
The question is why this caused the stumble. Rich condition due to fresh air on the O2?
I asked a friend who owns a shop. He was/is a Honda Master Tech and he said the o2 sensors are picky and small variations like this will do exactly what it was doing.
Hey man, do you know of any pre-made tubular front crash bars for EF? I can't seem to find anything except EG and EK. I'm looking to mount an intercooler from one and also save weight, while making it simple to remove from the car.
No, I do not.
Can you by pass that style Cat/Ex-Manifold and just Purchase a Ebay Header.? I live in Oregon and Dont have DEQ Or inspection For Tags? Just want My car to Run like it should?
Yes you could!
Why not just get a new header and cat instead of welding the old cast manifold that will continue to crack due to it being a cast manifold
Easy inexpensive same day fix.....for now or at least for a while.
Garage Built Hondas ok just saying seen multiple cast manifolds continue to crack even after welded and you should of preheated the manifold for better Penetration
We'll see how long it lasts.
Garage Built Hondas not hating at all just don’t want you to waste your time and good job on using ultra copper to make a gasket
I just had to change my oil n trans fluid for mine
Moment I see "before I get this video started" ..and ramble on abiut a promo
I hit back
Almost 3 minutes for a promo???
Wtf man...terrible
I mean, have you ever watched videos on RUclips before? You can scroll or skip forward at your own will. Trust me, it's pretty easy.
Where did you buy the distributor from?
amzn.to/2OckXaH
I use nickel rod and pre heating with torch's.
👍
Was just wondering, would u sell your crower 403s? Dont know if it would even make sense though cause shipping would be uhhhh.
You can get em brand new still i believe.
@@GarageBuiltHondas yeah but im a cheap ass so looking for them discounted. Its like i want cams and can afford them but i need cams, cam gears, springs and retainers, ecu chip. device to upload chips, wideband o2, and new header for wideband o2. Like dude I just want cams why do they make this so hard for me/my wallet
Yup. Adding mods takes money and patience
Hi man mine is losing power just when i accelerate on the pedal
Spark plugs are new as well as the catalytic converter
Changed the O2 sensor for the catatlytic converter too
So my last options are the manifold distributor or injectors am i correct?
See if you can find a crack. If there is then that's more than likely causing your issue.
Would JB weld work on hairline crack like that? I think my header may has a hairline crack,(ill investigate more since watching this)I get a slight stumble till i get the rpms up past 3grand on my lude.Cant afford to weld ritenow..if you dont suggest JB ill wait till i can afford to get it welded..Proud 3rd gen Prelude owner 😎(just studying)
It might work fine as long as you let it cute as needed. It's worth a shot and inexpensive also.
Bold of you to mig weld cast iron! Hope it holds up for you.
Yes
Damn thats crazy, you just threw parts at it. I wish i had that kind of money and patience
Previous owner did. I think he was trying to fix but couldn't get it.
I have a 2000 Honda Civic ex and It turns on then turn off and I would like some opinions on what it could be
Maybe this. Read through some forums.
honda-tech.com/forums/honda-civic-del-sol-1992-2000-1/2000-honda-civic-shuts-off-while-driving-2881851/
Think you can make a video about fixing speedometers not working type of issues.
Usually it's just a cluster that has stopped working. This car actually had that issue and I replaced the cluster and it was fixed.
Would you get a code for clogged cat if you had that issue my car Is a 2000 Civic LX
Yes
Hey man what site do you recommend for buying parts I need a rear window powered regulator
It’s a 1990 civic lx
Amazon, ebay, rockauto
Hello Friend! Nice job, like old MacGyvey :-D !! Thanks for sharing! Best Regards
I have a similar issue on my crx It has like 3 different exhaust leaks I’m going to fix them see if it helps
👍
Is this why my rpm skips and my cruise control goes out?
Possibly.
Mines has a acceleration problem..when I gas it it don’t really pick up..could it b the same issue?
Yes. You should check. Only takes a minute to look.
I know this is 2 years old. But Stack those dimes dude...
Hard to weld on fast iron.
So I've heard. lol
It's holding up well so far.
Can I use a d16y7/8 manifold cat on a d15b8? Having a hard time finding one for the eg
I don't see why not.
Hi, my car had a check engine light stating that the IACV was bad. I replaced it 2 times, BUT now it is only stuttering when the AC is on and HOT outside. Please help! I don't have any check engine light yet this time around.
Google "Civic stutters when ac is on". I saw a handful of posts and ideas which may help you get yours figured out. I have never had an issue similar.
@@GarageBuiltHondas I saw EricTheCar Guys troublshooting guide. My Civic has a leak, maybe from the water pump that I have not fixed and just kept topping every 2 weeks. I will try to get rid of air and then try checking for a leak with carb spray.
I have the same crack in the same spot as your video, but my issue only shows up when the AC is on. Also, I am in California, so I can only buy a NEW STOCK header...which means this car is totaled if I go that route.
Video is here: ruclips.net/video/PTA-eb4Lnrg/видео.html
Feel free to check out the video for knowledge sake if you are curious. EDIT: Thanks for the reply!
Is the compressor making that noise?
@@GarageBuiltHondas IDK, but I think it is the compressor trying to turn over. When that noise occurs, the RPM drops very low. So, a few hours ago I loosen the idle screw in attempt to keep the idle higher. With the AC on, it seems fine now. I played with it, loosening the screw and resetting until it sounded better. I'll update in a few days.
Thanks for your time and help.
Ok
Will a D16y8 marry up with a transmission from a 91 honda si canada built (5MT I all most positive they didn't have auto in si's)
Yes it will.
the perfect excuse to put a 4-2-1 header on
👍😁
i have a 1998 honda civic lx 4 door and i changed out the idle air control, tps, map sensor and after that my car was running fine. i then put sort of rims on it and eveey time i shift my car from park to reverse or whatever my car jerks really hard i changed the tires back to my old ones (when it wasnt jerking) and it still does the same thing. also when i put the rims on it it began to not want to accelerate it goes but it take a long time i’d be going about 30 mps and the rpms would be so high. i have lots of play in the wheel as well. any tips ?
Sounds like a transmission issue
@@GarageBuiltHondas u don’t think theres anything i can do about it ?
Of course, every *part* on cars can always be fixed. I don't have any idea what's wrong with your car though. Once you can get that determined, hopefully you can afford to pay for what it needs.
@@GarageBuiltHondas i’ve tried everything at this point reallt not sure. i was thinking my axils or ball joints might have something to do with it.
If the suspension is old and parts haven't been replaced ever, it probably needs a full rebuild of everything.
I hope this fixes mine
👍
Thats a common crack in ur converter. It happened to my 01 hyudai accent. Same spot.
Thanks for the info. 👍
is asr super lap August 15 night event still on?
According to their IG account it is.
I have a good condition 91 civic for sale it’s a manual with low mileage, interested?
Only if its within 100 miles of El Paso, TX. If not, I'm not interested.
Where you located ?
Garage Built Hondas unfortunately no I’m in Washington 🤣 but if you anyone in Washington is interested let me know !
Dylan Freedman Seattle WA
Mine just stumbled the entire ride home and I am by no means a mechanic so I dont even know what im looking at/for 😭😡
Where did you get that distributor
I'm using this one made by MostPlus. amzn.to/38As2wa
@@GarageBuiltHondas is it pretty reliable so far
No issues
Wish I could find out the issue with my Integra GSR 😔
Spencer's garage what is it doing buddy?
Still the same man?
Garage Built Hondas well I haven’t started the car in one year now. My Integra has been on hold due to life and also trying to get my Civic track ready. The intake manifold is still off (replacing with skunk2), and the whole dash board is still out after installing the Rywire engine harness. I have a whole list of mods I want to do to that car but it’s really difficult to buy all these parts knowing last time the car ran, it ran like shit. I’ve checked, replaced, tested, everything I could ever think of and the damn car still has a miss at idle and down on power. You can view the video of my Integra doing this on my Instagram @spencers_garage
YOU CAN NOT WELD CAST IRON ON SEMI AUTOMATIC. Why not create a chanfer?? Grind....
I've read. It held up until I sold it. Might not last long though.
I'd just buy a new manifold because I don't know how to weld.
It's an easy replacement also. I did the same on a different car I owned. ruclips.net/video/F_E6NaU_xYo/видео.htmlsi=3Evd6tQrsTRkVQBX
@@GarageBuiltHondas Oh ok. Thanks for the video.
Bro can you work on my d15 B ???
Possibly. I just haven't had much time lately to do any work.
Dude … that’s pot metal 🤣
Guys, no lost yours time NO WELD.....buy new one cat...$100,welding that crack no work!!!!
Thanks for the input. 👍

Failed you because the intro.. Lame

Nah bru go back grind it n reweld
It's gone, sold it the next week.
Very helpful
I have this exact same car and it shudders when I'm going up hill around 60+ mph.
Ever find the issue?
@@Kb_2v not yet. I'm assuming it is the same problem as described in the video cause I dont have any system lights on but it will shudder on idle and on the freeway
@@smellslikemeltingplastic same here it’s starting to get more and more frequent
@@Kb_2v yeah it does seem to be getting worse on my end. I'll update when I find the actual problem. My car has over 200k miles on it
