Great video man. Used to have a gen 1 yote and went back to a 3.7 after getting laid off from technician union strikes. Looking to get back into a coyote this video really helps.
I have a 2017 GT manual PP Grabber Blue I bought brand new and its stock. I enjoy my S550 and wasn't interested in the Gen 3 after hearing about the tick and oil consumption. I'm 58, so getting on NY highway on a Sunday morning is great for me. No boost needed for me. I do wish it hand the Tremec and magna-ride, instead of the MT82 and regular sport suspension. Cant complain otherwise. Thanks for the breakdown.
Running a 2017 with a VMP Gen 2 SC PP had Alex do all my tuning when he was over at VMP and could not be happier. The MT82 is holding up great after changing the shifter out to the Barton Hybrid 3. I also lower the car and beefed up the suspension installed oil pump gears, crank sprocket, return style fuel system and bigger injectors to support E85 but after running around a while with close to 700 hp to the rears coupled with 3.73 gears the car to me is about perfect. I eat Hell Cats on a daily basis and most Vettes if i can get the car to hook. Runs in the mid 10s on a good day then gets almost 20 mpg on the hwy on the way home while blowing cold air up your ass what more could ya ask for.
Had a 2011 gen 1 and now have a 19 gen 3 performance pack 2. Hard to compare the two because of the different roles they play, but now I'm making the same power with my gen 3 that my 11 had with a full cobra jet setup, so it's kinda nice to see technology move forward. I personally thought the compression ratio on the gen 3 would of been the issue for not handling the same amount of boost/power as the gen 2. Great video!

@Andrew V internally no. Clutch is at about 6k miles since boost. I have an MGW shifter trans mounted with a steeda bushing and that solved any 2-3 lockout issues as the trans and shifter move together under power. When the clutch does need to be replaced a Mantic is going to be used.
Are all 2017 mustangs a gen 2? I’m in a 2017 mustang GT. The only thing that worries me is shifting into 4th the shifter feels like it’s getting hit by something moving. Not a good feeling
I read a Coyote deep dive article on Late Model Restorations website about the history of the Coyote. It was talking about the Gen 3 having a horsepower shortfall above 750 due to the cylinders being sprayed in. It's too thin for bigger numbers. The article said that if you want big numbers then you'll have to sleeve it, rod and piston it and the engine will handle up to 1500 hp without issue. Very good article on the engines updates over the Gen 2.
Sorry I don’t check comments often, I didn’t blow it up, but mine had terrible transmission issues, then to top it all off it developed cylinder scoring and knock like a good few others have. Runs and drives fine, but the wear is incredibly premature and caused in my case from cylinder walls being out of spec
Great video Alex and I agree the Gen 1 Mustang is still the best looking Mustang to date. My Gen 1 Auto with a CPR Turbo kit threw a rod at 700 whp then I had a sleeved motor built and now make over 1200 hp. Gen 1 is lighter by about 250 lbs over the Gen 2 and 3 as well so thats something to consider and like u said a solid axle. Its MUCH cheaper to put in an axle and posi in a Gen 1 then the others which can run $4-5k being IRS. But shit u put ARP studs in and the Gen 2 motor and its a beast!
Im sticking with the 6r80. I will put the Billet planetary gears in over the winter if need be but plenty have gone low 8's on just clutches and input shaft. In fact, the first 7 second Mustang 6r80 only had upgraded clutches and input shaft but I do like the gearing of the 4r200 so its still an option but I wanna race in the 6r80 class.
You really are doing the Lords work Alex. You are my go to resource for my Coyote research. I love the gen 1, 13-14 for that retro look, but I also really like gen 2, 15-17 for its modern exterior & interior, as well as fixing the rod bearing issue, as well as the modern IRS for daily driving and handling. Tbh as much as I like gen 1, I will likely get gen 2 for checking all the boxes. God bless you Alex and all that you do, and may the Lord bring you continuous joy and peace of the Holy Spirit.

Agree with this video 100%. I Have a TVS boosted s197 here. It's only putting down 550ish to the wheels which is a boat load of fun on the street but I know it is no where near where I want it to be and I know the gen 1 rods are the weak point. I am starting to gather gen 2 parts to start building a more stout motor that will live at 1000hp.
Fck gen 2 motor. You can build your gen 1 to be way stronger than GEN 2 and it will cost less. Add Mahle pistons and steel rods and billet oil pump gears and make 800wheel all day e85. I don't want over 800wheel on street cause it's useless and spinning aint winning.
Now I'm inserting myself into the debate. Picked up a 2012 f150 Coyote from a dude that needed the $$, and I'm getting the engine prepped to put in my 65 Mustang. I'm tempted to leave the stock cams in the engine versus cracking the motor, and doing your bolt on suggestion. I am also playing with the idea of cracking the motor to upgrade the cams for bigger(500-600) horsepower later on. Welp, now I'm gonna watch another one of your Coyote vids, and see how far down the rabbit hole I can go!!
Excellent video!! Very up front and thorough! 2014 GT 6R80 supercharged for the past 50k miles...love it. It lives happily at 625+rwhp. Can't wait to add a watts link and swap to a TR6060! Easily the best car Ive ever had!
14 gt/cs here, 16k miles, Ford Racing handling pack and the track-cal tune, I know it's weak but it runs just fine. Future mods, clutch, aluminum flywheel and one piece DS. The clutch is the problem regarding high rpm lockout.
Alex, you always keep it real !!! I'm keeping my 2015 , and I'm going to put boost on it . Automatic car !!!!!! The clutch pedal on the s197 , doesn't feel like my fox body. Great advice
Bigger/ Taller guys looking at getting into a mustang for the first time need to go sit in them. I had a 2012 and loved it. But it lacked comfort and leg room. I almost bought a 2014 several cars later then sat in a 2015. Huge difference. It's so much more comfortable in the S550. I'm 6'7 225 btw. Just something to consider. Yet another great video Alex.
great video alex. i went with the gen 2 coyote w/ the mt82 due to being strong internals, reliable as it is, and shifter isnt as clunky as the gen 1. gen 3 definitely having alot of issues with the forkshift+10 speed so i passed on that.
awesome video. I'm so glad I went with a 17 GT Auto. I wanted a 9 sec street car. I got tired of shifting my 03 Cobra. The cobra is done and it will stay that way at high 10's with that car. Im leaning toward the Hellion sleeper kit for the 17 GT with a Lund tune of course....
@Dog Hampster How 'lame' cobras are? Cobras have one of the stoutest if not the stoutest motor Ford has ever built. Svt Baker has a stock bottom end stick shift cobra and has gone 8.20's
Dog Hampster never said it was that hard. Its an awesome car but prefer it to be more of a street car than track car. It can easy go 9s once i decide to upgrade to return fuel and e85 I just choose to put my money in my 17 gt. You must be one of those cobra haters. Lol
@Dog Hampster if you have 1000hp anything and aren't into the 9's you have a major problem. A 900hp mustang ran 10 flat in 3000 DA in my area. It was having traction problems and kept hitting the limiter.
2016 GT Gen -2 W/ 7,500 miles only mods are Oil catch-can , Borla 3'' ATAK cat-back , Saleen S302 High Flow Filter (15-19 GT) !! Run's great so far love the Gen 2 ......
Great video, and think a lot of people are asking themselves the same questions, but... Alex, I was hoping you would discuss the 6r80 vs 10r80 as well. Obviously the 10r is newer with less history at big power levels, but seems like the 6r is the stronger transmission. Yes?
I just bought a 2016 2 weeks ago, first stang ever, being a mechanic, I've worked on any and every modern day v8 here in Australia, and nothing is as complete a package as the s550 for the price. Handles, goes and looks, and those brakes, holy fuck, THOSE BREMBOS 🤌👌. Can't wait for a Whipple or Harrop 😍❤.
svtpower03 I understand your reasoning, but if you’re more into performance you’d be wise to go with a 15+ s550, I have a fbo 15 with a 6r80 and it’s a beast for what it is. Especially considering you can pick up a 2015 for a very reasonable price. Either way you can’t go wrong with a gen2 coyote. The power you can make on a stock bottom end is just amazing
it's coming I have a pretty built 03 cobra I race right now and a 91 foxbody with a gen1 coyote swap in it. An 13-14 car would just be a quick street car not a max effort. And I just don’t like the look of them as much.
svtpower03 nice fleet of cars man! I’d love to get a fox body one day. A lot of people don’t care for the look of the new mustangs. Can’t deny how mean the s197 stangs look. They have more of a muscle car look
Badass vid brother easy to understand for the average car enthusiast wanting to get more out of their Coyo 5.0 boosting my 2015 next year whipple way 😁 subscribed!!
I'm so happy to own a 2016 base model gt , got it bone stock and still is with a blower making 9 psi 700whp e85 auto... it's a fucking freighttrain and daily driven to work
Great vid and just in time. I was heading to daytona Saturday with my 13 mustang to trade in on a 2019 green gt. But at same time was thinking is it worth it. This really answered my questions. I think I’m going to keep my car for a while and do more research on the gen 2 and drive one . By what you are saying I think the gen 2 will fit my needs more and save me a bunch of money on top as well.
maximus vonce I felt the same but it does grow on you after awhile. I purchased a Vortech supercharger for my mustang and torq converter. But like alendro said what works the best for my goals. I feel that the gen 2 would probably be the best for my needs
Keep your 13 and just build the motor and ad boost why get another car payment when you can use dat money to build your engine or take 7000 in by a,crate engine.
maximus vonce S197 looks great don’t get me wrong but the 15-17 is my favorite. The 18+ are starting to grow on me but eh. Interior is s big factor in my opinion. I’ll stick to my better interior and IRS since I road course and don’t drag race
I finally drove a 2017 today Automatic with few bolt on tunes and wasn’t that impressed. I drove my 2013 down there see if we can work out a deal. And my 13 with similar bolt ons was definitely quicker by a bunch. I do not know if car I drove had been programmed . Also the front end is so long. But the seats where comfortable. I’m still debating. Car was 2017 11k for $23k seemed like a good deal.
I’ve always wanted a boss 302. I just love everything about those cars. The gen 3 is just easier to get as fair as trading a car in. With that being said I’ll probably end up with a gen 3.
Also gen 3 has 1 point higher compression. That’s why it’s a baller n/a engine compared to gen 1/2. But... the gen 2 still has liners great rods, carry over cast boss heads. I don’t see the gen 3’s living long on the same boost as gen 2’s.
Exactly gen 1/2 11-1,gen 3 12-1, DI helps by cooling chamber temps down. To help keep detonation at bay. Also possibly nox emissions. That’s my take on it.
I know your 19 GT is still under warranty but damn I want to see you swap that built older MT82 with the better gear ratios into it. I need to know what difference it will make :) Awesome vid as usual
Itll make a big difference...itll make 373 gears more like 456 gears with the 18 up ratios. That is a pretty big difference and the reason the 18 up manuals are so far behind the 10r80. The auto got much better gearing while the manual got much worse gearing for 2018 that's why there is such a performance gap. 18 up manuals need 456 gears if na but I havnt seen where anyone has done that everyone is stuck in the old way of thinking and they think 373 is plenty of gear like it was on the 11-17 mt82s but it isnt. The gears are way longer on the newer mt82d4 but based on your comment you already know that. You could either do 456 gears or swap an older trans and leave the 373 in it either will be similar. The ladder would prob have better highway cruising rpms though.
Excuse me if this question seems clueless: if you’re adding boost and you’re only limited by the rods, why don’t you beef up your rods? They’re some bad ass metals out there.
Awesome info Few questions. I have a 2015 5.0 done a few mods Like long tubes stainless work Corsa exhaust attached to it JLT cold air intake and Lund tune. BMR lowering spring and sway bars. Yet want more power and looks . Everyone here talks about a whipple what are your thoughts on it
Thank you for this video. I been trying to get info on what gen to get and the i really want a gen 2. I really do not like direct injection cuz i currently have that in my camaro v6 and it casues so much carbon buildup on the valves cuz they dont get cooled by the fuel.
Why do ppl like that rev matching so much I prefer to do it myself the same way I always have no need for auto rev matching that is why I prefer manuals I want full control and I wanna have to drive the car myself to each their own.
I’m happy with my gen 1 coyote as a cruiser . 4 hundy horses are enough for me. Brings a smile after a hard days work on the grind.

I have a manual vortech supercharged 2016 mustang making 640whp and love it!
Alex, you always keep it real !!! I'm keeping my 2015 , and I'm going to put boost on it . Automatic car !!!!!! The clutch pedal on the s197 , doesn't feel like my fox body. Great advice
154k mile gen 1 sealed bone stock coyote on a Lund Yolo tune with a Paxton. 10.4 at 130 full weight. Gotta love it.
Love A. Flores, love his info
As someone who is coming from the hemi platform, it is absolutely insane how the breaking point is 700whp on a stock engine and not 500 hp at 7 psi.
Been trying to decide if I want the gen3... have gen2 now. Will definitely be boosting in the future thanks for the video.
awesome video.
On3 is making kits for the 15-17 I believe as well
@Dog Hampster How 'lame' cobras are? Cobras have one of the stoutest if not the stoutest motor Ford has ever built. Svt Baker has a stock bottom end stick shift cobra and has gone 8.20's
Dog Hampster never said it was that hard. Its an awesome car but prefer it to be more of a street car than track car. It can easy go 9s once i decide to upgrade to return fuel and e85 I just choose to put my money in my 17 gt. You must be one of those cobra haters. Lol
@@lx347cid I would mod the 17 as well cobras are STILL taking names! Especially once 6r80 swapped. Thanks for the sub
@Dog Hampster if you have 1000hp anything and aren't into the 9's you have a major problem. A 900hp mustang ran 10 flat in 3000 DA in my area. It was having traction problems and kept hitting the limiter.
I love these kinds of talks.
2016 GT Gen -2 W/ 7,500 miles only mods are Oil catch-can , Borla 3'' ATAK cat-back , Saleen S302 High Flow Filter (15-19 GT) !! Run's great so far love the Gen 2 ......
Mi hermano! As always you have awesome content on your videos. Thumbs up!
Thank you alex. I definitely need a 15-17 coyote.
It’s help me so much not a little bit , thanks bro 💙
I’d like to pick up a 11-14 car someday and stuff a gen2 engine and turbo kit with 6r80.
Why not just get a 2015 then?
it's coming I like the way the 13-14 cars look over the 2015+
svtpower03 I understand your reasoning, but if you’re more into performance you’d be wise to go with a 15+ s550, I have a fbo 15 with a 6r80 and it’s a beast for what it is.
Good morning yo lo , Good video ive had 14 , 16 , 17 and now i got 12 gt500 so far best car i like solid axle better 👍
@Brisk4cityGz yes sir ,im into straight line racing 👍
Badass vid brother easy to understand for the average car enthusiast wanting to get more out of their Coyo 5.0 boosting my 2015 next year whipple way 😁 subscribed!!
Very good Coyote explanation here! Actually the best I’ve heard 😂 Thank you very much!!👍🏼👍🏼
I'm so happy to own a 2016 base model gt , got it bone stock and still is with a blower making 9 psi 700whp e85 auto... it's a fucking freighttrain and daily driven to work
forged my gen 1 for 6300 out the door. Boost is no longer an issue. :)
1st has weak rods and or rod and main bearings. I like the 2gen. In my Roush RS3. My 19 gen3 with the 10R80. is nice as well
Very well done video, as an 18 A10 owner I agree 100%, too much variation on the 18's.
Thanks for sharing Alex! Much food for thought.
Still running my Roush boosted 2015 gen 2 for 7 years with 45k miles and no problems.
Preach them brother, convert them! Awesome video Alex!, very informative as always keep’em coming brother!! 💪🏽👍🏽
Always get such great info on coyotes here! Wish someone would bring one on my channel! Haha
Really good video and very informative. Thank you very much.
Manual Gen 2 ... just a few bolt ons and loving every mile... need some suspension mods next
Steeda is the game changers!👍🏿
Great vid and just in time. I was heading to daytona Saturday with my 13 mustang to trade in on a 2019 green gt. But at same time was thinking is it worth it. This really answered my questions. I think I’m going to keep my car for a while and do more research on the gen 2 and drive one . By what you are saying I think the gen 2 will fit my needs more and save me a bunch of money on top as well.
Gen 2 ugly front end bro
maximus vonce I felt the same but it does grow on you after awhile.
I finally drove a 2017 today
Automatic with few bolt on tunes and wasn’t that impressed.
You'll save alot getting the boss and don't forget the boss holds its value
sasoun gaspar very true. I didn’t think of that.
Awesome video! I can't wait to see your road racing videos.
Good content, camera focusing was giving me a stroke though
Love my 17 mustang.
It'll be getting a tvs sooooon 😎😎😎
Best video ever. It's like spoon feeding me decisions lol thanks
I know it’s 2023 but j still want a 2013/14 gen 1 5.0! They look so sexy
Love the gen 3 power and sound but I saw the one at my work 2019 only have 20k mileages and have to replace short block 🤣.
Idk but in case it fails I’m saving for a gen 3 5.2 block
Great video Alex.
Great video.
Love your vids, good info
Excellent information, TKS
Great video , very informative !
Also gen 3 has 1 point higher compression. That’s why it’s a baller n/a engine compared to gen 1/2. But... the gen 2 still has liners great rods, carry over cast boss heads. I don’t see the gen 3’s living long on the same boost as gen 2’s.
Matt Nosal doesn’t the gen 2 and 3 have the same compression ratio of 11:1?
sweetcheels No. they upped the compression in the Gen 3 motors. Gen 1 and 2 run the same 11:1 compression.
Grand Master Yoda ah yes you’re right grand master toyota 🤙🏽
I believe the 18s are 12:1. I assume theyre able to do that due to the direct injection
I need to know what difference it will make :)
Awesome vid as usual
331Grabber same here
Itll make a big difference...itll make 373 gears more like 456 gears with the 18 up ratios.
Great info man! Love the videos 👍🏻👍🏻
Alejandro, thank you for the great info. Monday I’m going to look at a gen 1 ‘11 6 speed. What are your thoughts on nitrous kit. Any red flags?
Excuse me if this question seems clueless: if you’re adding boost and you’re only limited by the rods, why don’t you beef up your rods? They’re some bad ass metals out there.
Awesome info
Few questions. I have a 2015 5.0 done a few mods
Like long tubes stainless work Corsa exhaust attached to it
JLT cold air intake and Lund tune. BMR lowering spring and sway bars.
Yet want more power and looks . Everyone here talks about a whipple what are your thoughts on it
Useful and great information
Thank you for this video. I been trying to get info on what gen to get and the i really want a gen 2. I really do not like direct injection cuz i currently have that in my camaro v6 and it casues so much carbon buildup on the valves cuz they dont get cooled by the fuel.
I just want the new Rev Matching installed in my 2018 without having to buy a whole new car.
Come on Alex, you got connections. Make it Happen!!!
Why do ppl like that rev matching so much I prefer to do it myself the same way I always have no need for auto rev matching that is why I prefer manuals I want full control and I wanna have to drive the car myself to each their own.
Gen 3 is the best in my opinion, I have one and not a single regret at all
I have gen 1 myself. I would like to boost it but I am not going to push its limits. Would like to see it put down 600 hp on the wheels.
Gen 1 premium here. Would love to have 600. Nice little street number
I made 642 on 6 lbs 76mm turbo back 4 years ago it will easily do that over 4 digits now on new setup
