  • The moment of truth is here! After being #abandoned for over 24 years, will Trevor and I be able to get this Chevrolet #chevelle to run and drive? Spending time with Trevor and working on a classic #musclecar is always a great time. But having the opportunity to try to awaken this classic Chevy after being left to sit abandoned for 24 years is something that dreams are made of!
    Now that Trevor and I have gotten his Chevelle home and were able to inspect and assess its condition, the actual work starts now! We went out and methodically started going through our barn find. I start to teach Trevor the basics of the classic Small Block Chevy 350 that powers this Chevelle. Along the way I show him some of the items that we must check and inspect before we can attempt to fire the classic 350 up for the first time in decades.
    Once we decide that the engine is healthy enough, we can attempt to awaken it and get it running again. Once running, we can evaluate how well it runs. I even seized the opportunity to walk Trevor through performing his first oil change on his classic 350 SBC.
    If we determine that this classic muscle car has a clean "enough" bill of health, maybe we can get this forgotten Chevelle back out on the road for our first test drive, something that Trevor is dying to do.
    Trevor and I had an absolute blast working together on the car, filming, and editing this video for you. We both put a tremendous amount of work into this particular video! We really hope that you find it entertaining and enjoyable! We appreciate the support, and thank you for following us on our journey! We are just getting started!

    About AutoTechNick:
    Growing up in rural Oregon, I was always around Hot Rods & Race Cars. I imagine my early exposure to this culture ignited a spark of interest in cars, which remains my passion.
    🎓 I am a proud Alumni of Wyoming Technical Institute ‪@WyoTechAutoMechanicSchool‬ where I studied Automotive Technology, Performance Engine Building & Street Rod Fabrication. In addition to "WyoTech," I graduated from the BMW Service Technician Education Program, more commonly known as BMW S.T.E.P.
    🏎️ I spent nearly ten years working in various BMW dealerships as a Master Technician. After a move back home to the PNW, I found myself no longer servicing German-made machines but now working with Italians. I spent nearly another ten years as a Ferrari Master Technician & Shop Foreman at a local Ferrari dealership.
    🏆 Ferrari selected me as one of 12 technicians worldwide to compete in the "Ferrari Testa Rossa Awards" for four years consecutively. Finishing in 3rd place in 2016, & in 2019 I was able to place in 1st, winning the competition & earning the title of the "Top Ferrari Technician in the World!"
    🚀 As my time with Ferrari came to an end, a new career path awaited me…. Aerospace. I am currently working at Blue Origin, helping to build & develop the BE-3PM and BE-3U rocket engines.
    With my new career path, I needed an outlet for my automotive passion, thus the reason for this channel…

    Great video just do me a favor and check the trans fluid before you yank that trans it might be low from sitting a long time. But if it is bad look forward to learning how to rebuild my turbo 350 to get my 68 Chevelle back on the road myself. Love the father and son project thanks for the video

      Trevor and I actually held off on washing the car, as we mentioned at the end of this video. Instead, we chose to dig into the status of the transmission. We will be covering that in the next video.

    I have a 15 year old son who we just picked up a ‘67 mustang c code coupe for……so yeah i know the struggles of ford problems..im a chevy guy and i tried to convince him to get a GM but he wanted a ford😢😢😢…to bad for him cause i have several LS motors lying around…but here i am building a later model 5.0 roller motor to replace the tired 289….we already converted it to efi and man what i diffrence….trevor actually shows alot more intrest in learning and working on this car than my son does……good job, he is gonna turn out just fine😊

      That sounds like a fun project. Trevor did show interest in the early Mustangs, so they were on our list when we were looking for a project car. I like you, am a Chevy guy. Good move on your part to dabble in the dark side since that is what your son wanted! It's really hit or miss with Trevor's interest level. Some days he is REALLY into it, and others he is not. As frustrating as that can be at times, I try to remind myself that I need to make this a good experience for him... That's what it's all about in the end.

    Real nice find! Not finding fault here, but you really should have heated up the engine and the oil before you did the oil change to loosen up the sludge that may be in the engine! Unless you plan on running some cheap oil in there and run it through a couple heat cycles and then change the oil again! Just an observation and maybe some constructive advice! I am in no way a master mechanic trying to give you advice! This is simply a logical thing to do! For all I know you already know this And I'm preaching to the choir! Lol! I do find it absolutely awesome that you are doing this with your son!

    • @AutoTechNick
      @AutoTechNick  7 месяцев назад +2

      I agree with you. In nearly all cases, I will only drain the oil while it is warm. But in this scenario, it was my preference to minimize the amount of time we ran the engine on this old, unknown oil. We would have had to let the car run for a fair bit to get decent heat in the oil, and I didn't want to do that. The car will see many cold starts with no, or minimal drive time on this oil during this winter (causing lots of moisture and fuel to get into the oil). So by the time summer rolls around and we are ready to actully drive the car, it will need to be changed again anyway.

      Correct... I was just giving Trevor a high-level overview/ the basics. Purposely keeping it simple, so I do not bombard him with too much info and overwhelm him.

    5w-30 for this old engine? In my opinion, modern synthetic oil is not the right one for such old engines. I would take 15-w40 or 20w-50.

    • @trentdawg2832
      @trentdawg2832 7 месяцев назад

      20/50 all day on these old motors…untill he is able to source an LS to drop in there!!!

    • @AutoTechNick
      @AutoTechNick  7 месяцев назад +1

      From my experience, I have never had an issue running modern synthetic oil in any engine. The key to this is running a good ZDDP (Zinc & phosphorous) additive IF you have a flat tappet cam. The EPA & OE manufacturers started pulling that out of the oils in the 90s as it damages catalytic converters. I keep ZDDP on hand and run it in several of my cars depending on the valve train configuration.

      We'll hang onto this 350 for a little bit. Trevor needs to prove that he can be a responsible and safe driver first, and the 350 with 2bb carb will be great for that. He also will need to save the cash for an engine swap. Now if it were my car, it would already have a BBC in it. But I will not turn a 16 year old loose with one!
