Definitely on my bucket list. I live in Morelia, another beautiful colonial city …but have yet to get to Oaxaca. The food culture there seems so much more interesting than here in Morelia. A friend of mine lives in Oaxaca and has recently been concerned that it’s become way too touristy.
I pay 8,500 pesos a month(about $500) for rent on a nice apartment in Oaxaca city about five blocks from the Walmart. It is a nice place and quiet most of the time. However, there are no parks that I know of near me.
This was a very informative video. I’m going to spend 4 months this winter in a town called Soledad Etla. About 12 miles from Oaxaca center. I don’t know anything about it really but I just took a chance and booked it. It was cheap, and the host seems really nice. (Homestay) I didn’t want to spend much money sleeping as I’m really going for the food and laidback Mexican culture.

Was there for three weeks in June. Not as cheap as I expected. Need to be flexible and know someone to get a good rental. Would go back in winter but summer was miserable with no AC
No ac no Thanks no place is more comfortable than home in USA most of all near southern California coast line Mexico hummmm sabroso and delightful but but not too cheap any more even with Dollar you coming back a few thousands dollars less.

Great video. However it would be nice if you could share the names of some of the places you frequented. For example the name of your favorite coffee shop, that cool rooftop restaurant with the spiral staircase. I will be in Oaxaca in a month and would love the opportunity to support these locally owned business that you recommend (in addition to finding many of my own discoveries) I just need to know the names so I can try the places you praised. @@jackbaldwin3649 Many expats LOVE it here but I dont. It's way too hot and humid for me. I got stuck here during covid and it was better than other countries to be stuck in. The main benefit is the one year retirement visa. Very easy and no proof of a certain income. They assume if you have money to get here that you have money to live here. I have not left when i wanted to due to health issues. The doctors here are good(read reviews before going to clinics or hospitals as quality can vary greatly)and i had 3 hernia operations that were excellent and ~$700. There really is not much to do but i dont drive. My western apt is $300pmo with electric and food is cheap and healthy. I cook in. Cheers

The ad for the room said, “non tourist” town. I took the chance and booked it. I’m an American, but I’m not going to Mexico to hang out with Americans or Canadians.

1900$ USD a month is not enough for aibrnb plus food - eating out all the time, plus all other expenses???...unless you eat the corn+mayo they have on the streets... what about transport, meds, etc etc... eating out is very unhealthy, please don't do it - they cook with cheapest oils and it's a lot of grease involved and corn/wheat flour (tortillas).
I've lived in Mexico too, $1900.00 is alot of $$, I lived way cheaper than that and w a large family, too. I had my kids in private school (academic school, not daycare). Costs for all day was $125.00 8am- 6pm, includes fresh food from scratch cooked by teachers themselves, breakfast, lunch, snacks, and materials, and potty training. Reg medical, my doctor visits cost under $3.00 US $$, no wait time, includes a physical. My older kids tuition (bilingual education) was $225 per month 7am-7pm, food is included, tuition covers karateTae Kwan Do 2x wk and ballet 2 x wk. My rent for a very large apartament was $400. It was the happiest time of my kids lives, 2 yrs of cultural emersion and every summer we go back. We just returned from Oaxaca, 1 wk ago, I took my kids on all the tours we can get, we visite archeological sites, mercado, textile rug shops, natural springs for swimming (hierve el agua), churches, artesans, etc. Next summer they're trying a robotics summer class and a summer program focused on art & academics. When my son fell and cut his head open & needed stitches (happened off school premise), the student insurance (included in the registration), paid for all the medical costs.
Are you kidding me? The corn in mexico is the best, and the manteca too. AMLO has rejected the genetic corn from Monsanto, we are proud of our corn, its in our blood. Eating out on the street is the best tasting food. Tacos, tortas, tamales, u name it. 😋

Out of the 25 or so places I've spent time in Mexico, Oaxaca is my favorite, followed closely by Puebla and Guanajuato

Im mexican and all my family lives in Mexico close to the border and believe me we live with less than that and we don't eat corn and mayo every day 😮
