As a mestizo whose ancestors are from Jalisco and sangre de Chichimecas, I can only say Adelante hermanita! My one wish for you is that all your other wishes come true.
I thought you were a socialist that wanted to live off government resources - or at least that’s the system you propose. If that system is so good, why you need extra money like the business people you report on?
What she talks about is happening all over the world. Big corporations come in with their hotels/entertainment and siphon 70 to 90% of the money coming in through tourism. Leaving the locals poor and priced out of the area.
I’m consistently amazed at the intense bias in the anti tourism movement as well as the Marxist adjacent nonsense that totally undermines valid concerns over things like water rights. The real villains here are likely the local government. Instead, the blame is placed on the hotel owners. If they bribed someone, you need evidence of that. There’s nothing wrong with developing a hotel, and a hotelier should not be blamed for wealth inequality. Wealth inequality, by itself, is not necessarily morally wrong nor problematic in any way. (I’m sure that will spawn a lot of poorly thought out arguments, so please, think before you attack). As far as the minimum wage, if employees are taking these jobs willingly, that pretty much tells you there are no better jobs. Did the hotels buy out the local industry? What was there before? Did the land get taken by force, or was it sold to them? Are water rights in Mexico normally handled this way, or is there corruption here?
Yup. In Jamaica a bunch of tourist hotels/resorts have blocked local access to public beaches - forcing fishers and locals selling to tourists to walk miles and miles to walk around the fences.
@@LoveKeepsGiving Why has the government not enforced the public accessibility? We occasionally get this corruption along Texas rivers, but there aren’t people dependent on river access for their livelihoods so no one sues to stop it.
Classism, racism, and colonialism are closely intertwined. At its heart its laissez faire capitalism. Unequal protection under the law. Laws that bind the majority and protect the few. But do not bind the rich or protect the people. One could be in a "white" beach or mountain town in the 48 states. When investment capital, developers, and state level politics get together, public infrastructure gets hijacked. Utility rates are restructured. The town is transformed into something the locals don't want. The charm of the place is destroyed. What is left is traffic, pavement, soulless franchises, exclusivity, paying monopolies to use overloaded and trampled natural public spaces. The only solution I can see is progressive taxes on wealth; spent on truly public infrastructure. Schools, parks, libraries, nature preserves, clean energy, traffic calming, public services, labor rights, anti-trust, etc.
@@artfulalias3984 Bruh I got like a 3 page long response from a descendant of a sugar plantation owner about a beach's nickname, she was ranting on me being a haole for not using the Hawaiian name of a beach which I've never come across a single person who calls it by that name and I rock with Hawaiians and Filipinos on a weekly basis. Her family basically ran the Islands police system, bank system, and industrial business system while never hiring a single Hawaiian and she's over here calling me the worst type of haole... Pretty clear her family was some of the main ones who lacked Ha but never lacked money or power.
As someone with a Journalism degree, let me say there's very few people like Bianca left in Journalism, and she deserves all the praise in the world for refusing to sell her integrity, reputation, and soul to get a steady check from a media conglomerate. THIS. IS. TRUE. JOURNALISM. 👏🏼✊🏼
Mexican here. This is one but an example of how locals are always been exploited by these kinds of practices. Thank you for shedding a light and a voice for people that can't.
That is unfortunate for everyone - locals, natives and tourists - even the hotels and businesses. A better business should allow everyone to _win_ or at least benefit. Bianca does go over some examples of this.
Hi! I'm Oaxaqueño, and I happen to have study in school thay sent students home due to lack of water (I am not sure if it is the same school, maybe there was more than one. I don't know.) My school is near the city center, housed in the repurposed building of a historical monastery. The effects of tourism in our student comunity have been huge. Of course, the highlight in this video is the fact that we were sent home halfway through the day due to lack of water (which we recicle, as mentioned, using what we collect from the sink to flush the toilets). Class were suspended for a few days until the administration was able to get in contact with a pipa company to provide us with water, having to pay out of pocket (this is meant to be a public school, but teachers and students are often forced to collaborate and gather money to provide us with materials and other necessities). That is not the worse thing that has happened to us as a result of tourism. About a year ago, the city's police doubled down on street vendors, forcing them out of their places of bussiness, one of them being outside of our very school. There were violent alterations between the police and the vendors trying to protect themselves and their belongings. I didn't see anything, but I could hear the noise outside, and I believe at some point there were gunshots, I am unsure. It was hard, because many of us bought lunch from the people that were being arrested outside, and we were hungry and scared. They had to evacuate our school for safety, we were escorted through the city by our teachers (who are, as far as I am concerned, the bravest people in the world) to a safer location. This all happened as part of an effort to make the city "prettier," more "tourist friendly." To this day I deeply resent the goverment for using violence and putting actual lives at risk for the sake of appealing to foreigners. There is a stark divide between the "touristy" parts of the city and everything else. They only maintain of the roads or provide water to those "pretty" areas that people from outside will visit. Even then, though, you may see children begging in the street, or homeless people sleeping in the sidewalk. It's the contrast between the (mostly white Usmericans) folks that visit, well dressed and pampered, and those of us actually living here. All while migrants from the south are looked down on and punished by the goverment. Regarding my personal life, rent is unaffordable. Mother makes a decent enough salary as a doctor in a public hospital, but she has a second job as a therapist because otherwise we wouldn't be able to make ends meet. The hospital my mother works at struggles to get funding and have to make do with the bare minimum while the goverment subsidises the tourism industry. You get used to a lot of this precarity when you grow up here. I didn't question most of this stuff until I learned English and talked to people from all over the world to realize that going weeks without running water wasn't normal. I am glad there is someone spreading awareness about this stuff to a broader audience. I hope you will be safe, Mexico is not kind to honest journalists. I cannot thank you enough for writing and publishing this video. If anyone has any further questions regarding the situation in Oaxaca specifically, feel free to ask. This affects all of us, not only those working in hospitality, and particularly it harms indigenous populations. Maybe international awareness is what we need for the local goverment to get their stuff together.
What do you think about all the gringo volunteers who work at the hostels or in hospitality in exchange for accomodation (usually not earning money)? Is this a well known thing in Oaxaca? I know it's probably the owner's fault for not hiring locals and instead hire foreign volunteers to work for free, but what do locals think?

Por eso nadie les va tomar en serio sus llantos. Plata o plomo, y casi sin exception, ustedes siempre toman la plata. Veradero Guerreros O Patriotas tomarian Plomo, sin imporatar las consequencies.
Yea they started cracking down on the street vendors a couple years ago... in san miguel. And yes the locals can't afford to eat at the restaraunts. I've been aware of us gringos coming here and changing the landscape. Rent prices are ridiculous. I also have trouble paying these high prices. This video has made me think again about what is going on in the tourist industry. I'm not sure what the answer is.
Mexican here. This needs to be heard, this is happening not only in Oaxaca, but all over México, San Miguel de Allende, Mineral de Pozos, Progreso, etc. Are other towns where almost exactly the same thing you described is happening as well. Loved the video and your work, hope you can keep doing your journalism, we support you.
Think about it. If her directors told her not to say anything all this swamp includes the USA. This is why Latin- America, especially México will never be freed from all the gross bs of drugs, cartels, child trafficking bc the f bi and c!a are all in on this shhhht.
I'm with you..we go often to cancun..the resorts use local away from the city because the pay them way less that the local...the send a bus two hours away from resort to pick them up..this tell you if is not a good deal for them(resorts).

Ashamed? Of what? They're multimillionaires who will never have to worry about anything in life. The next 3, 4, 5 generations of their families will not have to worry about a thing. And they donate tons of money to all your favorite politicians and media outlets to make sure the majority of the population thinks they have a voice through "votes" or whatever governmental system your country uses. If they're not worried about appeasing the people it's becuase your country has already sold out. You're just a resource to them now. And you expect them to feel shame?
You know that the story you are reporting on becomes more meaningful, when corporations/companies “tell” you not share the details/facts you have uncovered. Meaningful, not meaningless journalism. Bravo 👏🏽
@DavidFuller2036 one thing I loved and have tried to copy from the people I met in Mexico is that even if spoken imperfectly, they were appreciative of the effort made and the intention, instead of ignoring the ideas and feelings being communicated to correct someone's wording. Unless the wording was so wrong that the message was completely lost and the wording was incredibly offensive. Guy tried to say good job. He didn't accidentally call anyone a pig. The message was communicated well enough.
As a mexican who has seen the impact of tourism and gentrification in both Oaxaca and Mexico City I deeply thank you for publishing this story and not complying with the corporate overlords, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. I would also advise any journalist both national and foreign to be very careful when working with local media companies or US based-Mexico focused companies. They might seem eager to work on actual real journalism that denounces social or economic problems in Mexico (mainly for political reasons), but all these companies are part of the same three or four conglomerates who have their tentacles in all kinds of shady businesses. In Mexico, if you dig deep enough, you'll find these conglomerates involved or related by family ties to very bad things one way or the other. Also remember Mexico is one of the most violent countries for journalists in the entire world, but not for all kinds of journalists, more often than not you'll realize the ones that disappear in mysterious circumstances are not those who work for N+ or El Universal or TV Azteca, because they always comply when situations like these happen, it's the independent journalists who put truth over profit who get silenced.
I've vacationed in Mexico three different times and would love to again but after listening to this, I'm not sure if I want to come back and contribute to all of these issues. What would you recommend? Are there areas that benefit from tourism?
She did mention Lachatao, Oaxaca at the end of the video. They take on tourism but on their terms. This is a place you could travel to as she mentions, you could rent one of their cabins they built as those proceeds go back to their community. Hope this helps!
@@LGoody9273 Good for you for not wanting to go where you are not wanted. Oaxacan here, I feel and believe that the Oaxacan people, the real Oaxacan natives, should wake up to this situation before its too late. This type of reporting will certainly be an eye-opener, just wish there was a spanish version of it, or better yet, with Zapotec translation so it would reach the ears of the very people being affected. Looking forward for you or other credible reporters to take up and follow up on this story. As a Oaxacan native, I tell you this certainty, Oaxacan natives may be nice, humble, hospitable and quiet, but sooner or later they will rise up to confront the injustice that affects their communities, and their ways may not be to the liking of many. I was thinking of moving to Oaxaca. Should I not move to Oaxaca? Do the locals not like immigrants or American's who want to become citizens of Mexico?
@@designzemno you should not move there if you're going to live above the common people or if you do not push back against these greedy tourism monsters.
In the USA we are also feed up of people from Oaxaca, they come here expecting the taxpayers to support them at soon as they get here and start having children. Saludos y bendiciones.
The whole world needs to wake up before it's too late because injustice is going to come down very hard on all of us very soon if we all remain docile.
In an age of short form content and constant cutaways to b-roll shots to keep people engaged, this was actually super refreshing and really engaging. Absolutely loved the format.
Honest & fair reporting is so rare nowadays, not because of journalists but because of giant corporations all over the world working against it. The integrity is inspiring.

Bianca I can’t thank you enough! Thanks for visiting my home state and speaking about this subject. Before watching this video I saw you as a great journalist, now you have all my respect, support and admiration… thank you thank you and thank you again for showing the world about this topic that’s affecting Oaxaqueños ❤
True, but if you are going to use your own voice, it might as well be intelligent, thoughtful, and balanced. I did not observe an intelligent, thoughtful, and balanced voice in this video. We have too much garbage content like this video. Too much click bait and not enough bread on RUclips. Be the needle, 🪡 not the haystack.
@4:40 I would bet good money either she made that graffiti, or someone she knows did. Since when were migrants welcomed in Mexico??? 😂😂😂 Give me a break!!!😂😂😂
My mom is a travel agent so we got to travel frequently - I was in Cancun and I adored my time in Mexico we walked around the markets and bought souvenirs and I never wanted to leave. Hawaii here in America has the same sentiment. I wish we could all live comfortably with what we need - but the greedy always mess everything up. It’s dangerous being a journalist now so thank you for using your voice and to not be censored to letting s know what is happening. ❤
Stay safe Bianca, corporations are more devious than criminal organization. They do the same thing in the US, but our water supply isn't as dire. I'm so happy to see you stand up to these corporate raiders, but people in wealthier countries tend to be willfully ignorant and uncaring. I wish you luck.
Their line is non-existent between lawful, moral and not. Globalism to gentrification is foundational to organized crime. Whether the drugs abused on streets or by local pharmacies, the same top families are mostly appreciating these assets and consequences. They hedge accordingly and fix the bets against life on Earth. Fool & Rule Compounding interest, usury, penalties and wasting time does most of the rest, mostly on autopilot. Police amd military are less needed to bash heads. Mind wars matter most. Most people with comfy enough lives don't really care nor care to know enough. Eventually any animal becomes comfy in their cells, until they lose it. NEVER ENDS PRETTY. You'll see.
@@mustbetrue1602 this is true. And sadly, a large percentage of working people get too caught up in either identity politics that divide us or in what I call the "deserve doctrine" where they feel that because they work hard and are getting by that anyone who _isnt_ getting by just probably isnt working hard enough and just doesnt _deserve_ any better.
@@carlitoscarlitos7576a starting point is highlighting the the fact that (as noted in this true journalistic video) the profession of journalism has been truly corrupted within the corporate systems. This will help as we discern what is true, what is withheld, and what is blatantly propaganda.
This is actually so important. I'm Chicana and I've been wanting to explore more parts of Mexico in my adulthood. Oaxaca has been one of those "trendy" and romanticized destinations on Tiktok and IG but I have never seen this aspect highlighted, mostly because this is not an issue that is reported on. I'm also torn about the living wages in tourism as I work for the top hotel employer in the world. Seeing the wages being offered while knowing how much a hotel room night costs is actually appalling. These companies entice job-seekers to sacrifice a fair living wage with the hopes of job security and opportunity to grow. I know Oaxaca is not the only place being affected by this so props to you for shedding a light.
You're Mexican. Chicana is made up nonsense from woke clowns in Southern California. There's a reason nobody in Arizona, New Mexico, or Texas uses that term.
Mass immigration into usa was always about paying workers less money. You're part of the wave of de-gentrification, brought to usa to destroy wages and workers rights.
As a Native Hawaiian and someone who spent a month in Oaxaca this year, I understand these issues viscerally. There are now more Native Hawaiians living outside of Hawaii than within due to touristification. Our culture and islands have been exploited with little care for the locals. Oaxaca is a beautiful city with many challenges ahead. Thank you for sharing their story.
We lived in a green Volkswagen Westfalia on Maui for 6 months back in 2000. It was heartbreaking to see all the BS that was going on there. Not just the tourists, but the Richie Riches that bought everything up and priced out the locals. The same is happening in my small town in Colorado now. It was written up in the NY Times maybe 20 years ago and hasn't been the same since. Rich A-holes pushing out the locals. Lots of second home owners - there's an entire neighborhood that is pretty much a ghost town! Property taxes skyrocketing. Newbies threatening to sue their neighbors. Their attitudes are something else!! We HATE them!
Over my lifetime, there has been a criminal concentration of wealth. When I was a kid, a CEO made 25 times the pay of one of his workers. Today, that iniquity factor is 344:1. When I was 18, I had a job at a seed store making $300 a month. Joined the military and still made $300 a month. But, back then, the value of gold was $58 an ounce -- so I was making 5 ounces a month. My first car cost two weeks pay. My first motorcycle cost a month's pay. Today, the equivalent to what I was making ... 5 ounces of gold ... would be $13,000 a month. And there is no way the person making it would be an 18 year old fresh out of high school.
Unclear what the name of the hotel company added to this. This is an interesting story - I wonder if you believe that the current residents of other populations have the same rights as you are advocating for here. Say, Nortenos who don’t want further strains on their local communities by immigration, temporary or otherwise.
The majority of tourists want to buy local, which is not always simple. However, it makes me sick when locals suffer for corporate gains. Thank you for this information and hard work.
Integrity is never painless. Speaking truth and living with integrity must remain the foundation of any work you do. Thank you for your journalistic work.
wow, I watch a lot of news and few reporters I can think is this well organized intellectually. what a breath of fresh air! I was able to follow you without getting turned-off by advocacy, which is too often the case these days. exceptionally well balanced. with compliments.
Corporate Sponsors affect News Coverage. For example, in Local News coverage in the US, local TV stations will NOT run critical stories about Car Dealerships. Why? Because car dealers are the #1 sponsors of local TV news. For the past 3 years, car dealers have been charging "Market Adjustments" which are basically 10K commissions that car dealers put on top of the Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price. But there has been little coverage of this from local TV stations.
I never heard that before, I don't have the resources to buy a new car anyway and I'm not going to buy anything on credit. Thanks for sharing that, I'm not surprised.
Yes. Unlike youtube talking heads that are 100% audience captured and rely on feeding you what you wanna hear for their paycheck? You're just trading one form of propaganda for one with even less fact checking and accountability.
Even local TV stations can’t dodge the influence of corporate money. Sinclair is buying local stations to deliver a uniform message. Sinclair owns or operates 294 television stations across the United States in 89 markets
Sorry I’m not from the US but arent they called MSRP there, manufacturer suggested retail price? I always thought that the dealer decided the final price. That is why they can discount a car without having to get the manufacturer’s permission to do so or in this case charge over no?
I am a Mexican citizen and I know that the Mexican government is working to attract more tourists. You have opened my eyes and I truly hope more people hear and understand your report. Pros and Cons: I hope that the elected officials understand the difficulties and find solutions for the local people. Thank You, Miss Bianca. The world needs more journalists who investigate and report the truth.
I hope you live in Mexico and not here in America. If so, then your opinion is valid; but if you are in America illegally and spouting off, then I hope Trump deports you and everyone you know, starting January 20, 2025..
I'm coming to Mexico next year. But I'm not a typical tourist. I prefer to visit local (non-tourist) shops and cafes. I love the cultures of Mexico and want to try and leave a place with memories of the true people not what goes in a brochure.
They seem like they have issues, I think you’ll need to force their eyes to be opened if they still refuse this is how they always were and mass protest is the only solution.
I have no idea why you came up on my feed but I am so happy I came upon it. Thank you for your bravery you are a true journalist! We need more people like you in this world! ❤
As a Mexican and some heavily into enviormentism and Human rights, I really appreciate this. I tried explaining this stuff to my parents about Constellation and corona production drying up water from their home state and they didnt believe me. Not until my cousin in mexico who is politically active, brought it up himself in conversation. Bathing like the way you described actually happens all over México. Thankfully there are more vocal people now. If anyone is interested in helping water equality and sustainability, there is a great project model being worked on called Islaurbana. They are trying to help supply water to everyone.
I am SO tired of hearing how the corporate world is destroying everything and how all that matters is short term gain at the expense of so many good people. A long time ago I knew Oaxaca would change and never be the same ever again. My heart is so sad hearing way too many stories like this. Thank you for getting this out there! well done!
This is so disappointing. It would be so easy to make things more equitable. Build high rise apartments for the workers at a low price, subsidized by the tourist industry. Something like that was done effectively in Aspen, Colorado.

I have spent 30 years in the travel industry around Yucatan peninsula and what you present is a comon issue woth low wages and abusive labor practices. Apecially locatons like Tulum, riviera Maya and can cun. Masive investments, vertical integration and extractive practices to the detriment of local comunities. There is different models but they are few compared to the mass tourism models. Thanks for your honest reporting on the reality behind the hype. You are a fine example of honest journalism
The state government wanted hotels front cancun to tulum because tourism is big business, more than 150 of them!! It's up to the governments to ensure fair wage practices and no exploitation of local populace. If you stop the visitors, you're killing the golden goose. The goose is not the problem. The issue is sharing the gold with the community. That can only be achieved by the community, not the goose.
I'm employed within the tourism industry in the Pacific Northwest . After being self employed for 2 decades and eventually coming to terms with the inevitability of negative cash flow if I tried to stick it out... I realized that I have skills and motivation that make me marketable. So I ended up being an employee of a short term rental company. My employer / Owner / Manager of the company , is someone who takes 'Business Vacations' He travels with his family - And returns with more money than he left with. But when he has problems , He comes to me for help.... Before the tourism industry, there was Timber and Fishing Do I like it ? Would I change It if I could ? Maybe - But I consider myself fairly fortunate, for a guy who makes so little money that I don't have to pay taxes.
As a foreigner living and doing business in Mexico, the impacts of tourism and gentrification are of great personal concern. This is by far the best piece of journalism I've seen on these issues, providing both a historical and contemporary contexts. I hope to see more from Graulau on related issues both in Oaxaca and throughout Mexico.
Great personal concern if your community is revitalized and isn’t always in decline ? The leftist ideology has completely overtaken Mexico. CCP narco communist country. Beware of young activist aka “race Maoist” they know not what they are doing!
As a native to the United STates of America I agree we need to all stay in our own lands. We have masse immigration that is importing the 3rd world people into my 1st world country causing the degradation of my land and my culture. We should export them all back home don't you agree?
The azcarraga family it's famous and hated here on mexico, they have corrupted generations defending some of the worse governments we've had. Famously, during the massacre of Tlatelolco, a government massacre where hundreds of university teachers and students where executed or imprisoned during a Pacific manifestation. Where the Olympic games where being hosted on mexico, we had students trowed In makeshift holding cells just milles away from the tourism. What did the news, owned by this family said during all of this? The infamous phrase "hoy es un dia soleado" today is a sunny day. No reports on what was happening, other than small mentions saying violent protestors where apprehended. Good reporting Bianca! Appreciate your desire to report your journalistic truth. The problem is not the Gringo, travel, or money spent in country. The obvious problem I witnessed in Riviera Maya in the state of Quintana Roo this month is there is very little investment in local infrastructure to support the development of the local area. No sidewalks, poor electrical grid, antiquated roads, poor water and sewage collection, and the list goes on. Activist should focus their energy on electing good people to tax the hotels and tourist $$$ to support local infrastructure projects. My guess is huge bribes are paid to people in power to keep taxes on corporate interests low. Typical corporate playbook worldwide. Exploit the locals and local resources to boost corporate profits. Be safe❣
It's less about tourism it's more about where tf is that money being gained being distributed too?? It's usually put back into tourism so essentially ppl are visiting countries for free and nothing gets paid to help the natives from there.
Due to the larger amount of newly wealthy people inherenting boomers money the worlds tourism industry is becoming much to powerful. This ends very badly especially for rich tourists trapped in a angry mob of poor locals with nothing to lose an plenty to blame on the tourists.
I think you and the people who replied to this post missed the point completely. The problem is not tourism. The problem is how tourist dollars are distributed.
Yup, gentrification. Native people from Barcelona are being forced out because they can’t longer afford to live in Barcelona. Rent is to high, house prices are to high, groceries are more expensive. Same thing in Amsterdam.
Found this video as a random recommendation and I am so glad I did. It is so good to know all this very very important information. I had no idea. Thank you so much for sharing this.

Hello Bianca, the facts you pointed out went off like a light bulb to me, I recently lost my Mother she would speak of her father with much love and admiration he was of Zapotec. As a child, our home had many Mayan, Oaxacan, ancient artifacts, and Mayan fossil stone carvings my favorite was a polished marble priest or ruler, leopards, mountain lions, hides, etc. This is the first article I have ever seen about Oaxaca on RUclips. you are an outstanding Journalist.

Well done, its actually really inspiring to see an independent journalist doing what it takes to tell the story to the best of her ability! Thank you for your hard work.
Oaxaca was beautiful when I visited in 2012. The only actual tourist I came across were backpacker Europeans. Social media influencers ruined most of the hidden gems.
So this is what true journalism sounds like. I had forgotten…especially when other “journalists” refuse to speak candidly about ALL the facts. Whether it sweeps one side, or the other or both at the same time. Great piece, too! Glad I found your content.
Coca-Cola has been paying for the purposeful incompetent handling of fresh water sources in Chiapas, Mexico for decades so they could siphon it away for their production. They worst part is they made an advertising campaign in the indigenous communities there convincing them that Coca-Cola is as medicine, and water supplement since they have no water left to drink. As a result, Chiapas indigenous communities have some of the highest rates of diabetes in the world, drinking over 2L of cola every day - man, woman, and child. The corruption starts at home.
You’re an inspiration for all people looking for truth and justice. Thank you for sharing this important journalism with us despite big media trying to censor you.

Thanks for sharing this information. The same issue with the water happens in other states. I have family in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur. And they also have to buy water from the “pipa” but the hotels never tell anyone there is an issue with the water.

Thank you for your commitment and integrity in your journalism. As someone who’s been living in Mexico for the past few years, it’s crucial for me to understand how to live in reciprocity with the local community vs. extracting value and taking. Your story is a perfect case study to bring awareness to anyone who cares about the wellbeing of local and indigenous communities, about fairness, equality, respect and conscious living.
If only more people could Resist. Fantastic reporting. I am in the U.S. My grandparents came here from Mexico in the early 1920's. Traveling to the hotels and resorts in Cancun, Cabo and Puerto Vallarta was sad for me because I could see the gentrification happening. Offering hot dogs and pizza and other such unhealthy options for people to eat, rather than the authentic Mexican foods is a mistake. Greed and profit for investors is the number one motivation. Promises of jobs and improving the local economy is a lie. Always has been and always will be. When you look behind our fancy hotels and Air B&B's you see the truth. Homelessness, poverty, lost hope and a growing divide between rich and poor. The "American Dream" will become Mexico's nightmare if they allow investors to take their country.
The Mexican government already Messed up Cancun's natural beauty With all those hotels sitting in front Of the Ocean they are destroying Massive rainforest also with their train maya . All for foreigners 👎👎👎👎👎 The Mexican government is the Cancer of Mexico.
Hey there, I'm a gringo but my girlfriend immigrated from Cholula Mexico. I found the story absolutely heartbreaking, I'm not a big fan of how corporate America treats its own citizens much less how it treats the indigenous peoples of other countries. I know that this story couldn't have been easy to report on even before considering the risk you had to take telling the story in lieu of active corporate suppression. The thought of an entire indigenous population suffering water shortages and a cost of living crisis all for the sake of a few corporate entities and what I can only imagine are waves of tourists; it must have been nauseating. I appreciate all of the effort that you put into it. Subscribed, really appreciate the hard work.
If you want to help Mexico just tell all your white friends how many murders happen daily to both normal people and government officials. You’ll stop tourism over night. It’s that simple. 37 assassinations in last political cycle 😂… wtf? That’s some high quality trouble.

What she talks about is happening all over the world. Big corporations come in with their hotels/entertainment and siphon 70 to 90% of the money coming in through tourism. Leaving the locals poor and priced out of the area.
Spain?
As an American 🇺🇸 citizen it boils my blood to know that certain people from usa are out to take advantage of beautiful Latin America
Hawaiians and Hawaiian locals know this story by heart. Same old same old.
Schools, parks, libraries, nature preserves, clean energy, traffic calming, public services, labor rights, anti-trust, etc.
... HAWAII IT IS NOT A U.S STATE, IS A U.S COLONY, AND THEY GOT A KING.

Ahhh Noted!!! Let’s get this out!
Thanks for sharing, sad stuff. Sounds like the police/government are probably getting a cut of the profits of the tourism.

Your journalistic integrity is greatly appreciated and admirable.

The tourists may not all be good but they would bring wealth and good tourism to mexico if only local farmers, foodcarts, authentic family restaurants owned by locals got the business NOT monopoly size farm giants like monsanto, or fast food like mcdonalds, and local bed&breakfasts, basic motels owned/run by locals to benefit their families an economy INSTEAD of major Hotel chains, Timeshares, All-encompassing
All-inclusive Resorts and Corporate organizations.
Monopoly the board game is a REAL LIFE depiction of rich elite bankers (Warburgs, Morgan,Rothschild) buying up all the infrastructure, utilities, railroads, red Hotels, charging high rents to bankrupt the small town or green house owners of the locals into total victory of all the money/resources/land/farms/house ownership etc going towards the elite business and corporations!

The injustice of the system cannot be challenged without this kind of journalism.

Very nice. Thank you.
The "system" is called capitalism
Why aren’t chicanos and mxns the ones shedding the light? Do yall not care about what happens to your vulnerable population?
Mass immigration into usa was always about paying workers less money. You're part of the wave of de-gentrification, brought to usa to destroy wages and workers rights.
It's EVERYWHERE! Florida is just as bad. Is the place beautiful with good weather and beaches? Watch out because here comes Colonialism 2.0.
The way my mouth dropped listening to the facts you were speaking…. Please do not stop reporting. This is amazing work. ❤thank you
As a Native Hawaiian and someone who spent a month in Oaxaca this year, I understand these issues viscerally.
There are now more Native Hawaiians living outside of Hawaii than within due to touristification. Our culture and islands have been exploited with little care for the locals.
Oaxaca is a beautiful city with many challenges ahead. Thank you for sharing their story.
I live in one of the biggest tourism destinations in Mexico. It’s the same everywhere. Tourism is the parasite that “feeds” us while it starves us.
Brilliant! Fight Colonialism... with colonialism? I hope you land somewhere that lets you own land.
Lol the tourist understands these issues viscerally.
@@motionsick Do you know anything about Hawaii history?

Yes ownership impacts news. For example, Bianca deleted / CENSORED my comments cause she hates diversity

Agreed however nothing will change regardless of how much this is exposed. Money is power. So sad.
My employer / Owner / Manager of the company , is someone who takes 'Business Vacations'
He travels with his family - And returns with more money than he left with.
But when he has problems , He comes to me for help....
Before the tourism industry, there was Timber and Fishing
Do I like it ? Would I change It if I could ?
Maybe - But I consider myself fairly fortunate,
for a guy who makes so little money that I don't have to pay taxes.
Sadly there is no money in independent journalism and exposing truths
Tremendous respect for your integrity and honesty.
As a foreigner living and doing business in Mexico, the impacts of tourism and gentrification are of great personal concern. This is by far the best piece of journalism I've seen on these issues, providing both a historical and contemporary contexts.

Be safe❣
This is true Journalism. Thank you so much to staying true to your values and credibility! Love the new format. You do amazing work!
Barcelona in Spain started to protest against the increase of tourist too.😮
It's less about tourism it's more about where tf is that money being gained being distributed too?? It's usually put back into tourism so essentially ppl are visiting countries for free and nothing gets paid to help the natives from there.
Ironically, both Barcelona and Madrid are protesting against Mexican nationals purchasing up properties.
