As I am on a pretty dismal pension myself ($600 monthly) I was quite excited by the headline, "Living in Mexico on $130 Monthly pension". However, that is not the case. Rennie already owns a property in Mexico where she is presently living plus receives rental income from 2 self contained units. On top of this she teaches English online and also in person. Personally I feel the headline has skewered the truth. I feel suckered into watching a video which has dashed my dream of living in Mexico on a low pension.
Sorry - I figured most people would realize that you can't actually live in Mexico for $130 per month. I'm not aware of any place in the world where you can live that cheaply. I was hoping to inspire lower income people to look for creative ways to earn extra income to make it possible.

I am sure this woman has led a fascinating life and has some great stories and she has been very industrious and smart in making her retirement work. It's somewhat misleading to say that she's living on $130 Canadian each month. She is renting part of her home and continues to work which brings in income. Not everyone is as smart and industrious as this woman or would be able to follow the same blueprint. She's also in relatively good health which works to her advantage. I think this plan could work for a subset of retirees though. Bravo to her for carving out an adventure for the next stage of her life!

You should retitle this video, she's not living on $130.00 a month. Also, if you can convert pesos to dollars so we can get an idea of what the hell she's paying.
@@glenwoodfin So funny! I was thinking of making that exact video. That's what some folks expect ;-) I bet I'd get a lot of clicks - and a lot of comments calling it clickbait ;-)
@@AlmostRetiredinMexico I'm cool with clickbait because you delivered. You two delivered solid content. Y'all got to the actual numbers and I found it very helpful because I'm thinking about moving there.
Yes, the title is misleading and at 40 seconds I was going to respond; but then I thought I should see all of it first. That is what RUclipsrs do to get you to click. It is quite common. I live on $10 per month...........but then I have other income I did not reveal, Ha.
The truth is somewhere in between. $130US/month is 2,200+ pesos/month or 26,500/ year. That is enough to easily cover the fixed expenses of utilities, taxes, transportation, et cetera that she listed in the video. It's doubtful her rental income is more than $130/month. Certainly the additional income allows her a significantly more free spending lifestyle.
Glad to find your content you are the first immigrant in Mexico I hear encouraging to pay taxes. It's the right way 9:42 I once saw a coworker taken by Mexican immigration due to not declaring their work status. Shipped back to France.
Wow - I have a interview (not yet public) I did with someone who overstayed her 180 day tourist visa and ended up in jail for 2 nights while friends raised the cash to get her out. Immigrants have been too used to skirting the law in Mexico, but the government is getting more sophisticated. Thanks for watching!
That's unfortunate but deserved, life in Mexico is already cheap for many coming from somewhere else and still so looking to get it cheaper or for free?
would've been nice to post the conversions right on the screen so we could get an idea of Pesos Vs Dollars. The house tour was a bit disappointing we only saw the front room, her office, kitchen and bathroom...I would've love to see the other units in her home.
Sorry. I normally put the dollar amounts on screen, but I forgot when editing this video. The other two unites were occupied when I was there, so we couldn't film them. :-(
When Rennie mentioned the wet & dry seasons, I thought "Hey, that's practically the same as here in Chiang Mai, Thailand". When I looked up the latitudes it all made sense, quite close, Chiang Mai at 18.8 degrees north and Guadalajara at 20.7 degrees north. Nice video.
Different ppl, different ideas, different point of view will make the difference and change the country for good.. welcome to Mexico if you love my country.

safer with a dog? every house and building here has heavy steel doors with double locks and bars over the windows. I dont think a dog is going to make that any safer.

I cant stand these clickbait titles. I knew there was no way anyone was living on that amount of money. but good for her from a fellow Canadian also living in GDL. she has done an amazing job fixing up her property! as for Colonia Americana not being nice, I can only assume you were not walking in the correct areas. its not necessarily nice like "Beverly Hills nice". but it does have hundreds of colonial style mansions and cool restaurants and cafes. the area also has a lot of mature trees that give the area a lot of shade.
Sorry about the title. She's built her semi-retirement to work given that her pension is $130/month. She's definitely enjoying life. I walked down Chapultepec in Col. Americana. Lots of bars, restaurants and coffee shops. I heard the mansions were on Libertad. I thought the houses were nice, but not that great. I walked by the US Consulate and thought it was a prison. Where's all the good stuff hiding? I very much enjoyed Centro and if I were ranking neighborhoods, I'd put that above Col Americana.
@@AlmostRetiredinMexico it sounds like you just dont see what the rest of us do. Americana is like a sanctuary in the middle of the city. the restaurants are not only on that main avenue but scattered along all the side streets too. yes, Libertad probably has the highest concentration of mansions but they can be found on almost every street. I have spent most of my time here in centro and I'm back here now. I love it also but there is a lot of decay and badly run down areas, tons of homelessness and garbage on the streets. I think my fave area is Santa Teresita which is directly north of Americana. it's like a self contained Mexican town inside the city, a short walk to Chapultepec and a short walk to Midtown which is a more modern shopping and business area. you were on the edge of Santa Teresita where you stayed and yes that part is a bit rough looking with few trees.

@@AlmostRetiredinMexico by lying- no excuses

As a Canadian I would love to live in Mexico. Of the places in Mexico I have visited, Xalapa is my favourite. I could never get tired of the scenery, architecture, cultural opportunities, music, art, book stores, markets and most of all the people. Beautiful.
Thanks Peter - I've never been to Xalapa - or anywhere in that region. There's so much of Mexico for me to explore!
Did you visit Xalapa, Veracruz?
Great interview, very inspiring! Thank you so much.
God bless you both and welcome to Mexico. 🙂
Thanks so much for sharing your country with us!
Love this! I love the life that she's carved out for herself. Lovely, just lovely. 🦋
My GDL one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico! I'm glad You guys like it there, enjoy!
It really is! Thanks for sharing with us immigrants!
I live in puerto vallarta and love it!!!! Can be reasonable to expensive for rents. To buy is a wide range of prices. Beautiful, friendly people, plenty of foreigners, retirees and snowbirds living here. Lots of activities to do, volunteer work, restaurants and theater. Beaches are beautiful north and south of the city center.
Plenty of foreigners is bad news. They drive prices up.
I work for Costco would like to transfer there. But, I do not speak Spanish. I heard there are a lot of Americans, bit would you advise learning spanish?

Excellent video and the lady you interviewed really has her act together. Her house is lovely, and she was smart to set things up to generate extra income. It's great that she enjoys her neighbors and the area that she lives in.

Glad you enjoyed it! And thanks for the reminder about the short term rental. I'll add the link to the description: casarennie.com.mx/
I am happy to hear she is paying taxes and that she gets around in the neighborhood and that she cares to socialize with her neighbors which is more than the average U.S person does, maybe is because she is from Canada.
Ouch - I’m from the US. But I know what you are saying…
You can’t socialize if you can’t speak Spanish.
It depends where in America 🇺🇸 but if people don't like America they should not live in America. I wish immigrants would learn the reason behind our constitution and how God gave us our freedoms

Bringing dogs to Mexico is easy - especially if you drive across the border instead of flying. I think the limit is 2 per person, but they aren't really counting...

An advantage of Guadalajara is that it’s far enough inland where an expat can buy the property unlike the cities by the coast
Just subscribed to your channel. I’ve been thinking of a vacation home in Mexico. The idea of using it as a “vacation rental” is genius.
• Will binge your videos to learn how to start the process- lawyer contacts, how to open bank accounts etc.
Welcome aboard!
Awesome woman, awesome dog, awesome home. 👍🇨🇦😎🐾
Agreed. Agreed. Agreed. 😃
I lived for 17 months in a neighborhood called Bangkapi in Bangkok with my Thai wife. We paid $130/month for a 2 bedroom condo with 24 security. Walking distance to a mall, two massive outdoor markets, and 4 grocery stores . We could buy the condo for around $30000. Mexico looks great but honestly I see videos and I think Southeast Asia is the best value🤷🏻♂️
When was this and how much is a 1 bedroom condo furnished in Bangkok and Pattaya?
@@gif24gt60 2022-2023. You can live expensively near Sukhumvit or cheaply like most Thais . I moved in with my wife in a very Thai neighborhood in a very Thai condo . No other farangs in my building. A lot of people don’t believe me because they try to live a western lifestyle in Thailand .

The title is misleading. Her pension is only a small supplement to what she earns from rentals.
It's the right way 9:42
I once saw a coworker taken by Mexican immigration due to not declaring their work status.
Nice video.

Your dog is darling! It sounds really good. I would not have been able to endure getting the mold out of the house. Looks great now. You have made good choices in your life. Many Blessings for a full good life there.

Very enjoyable video, interesting. I love her pupper! How sweet that she rescued him and that he's great company. I have heard that it can be safer in Mexico to have a dog in the house. I am a cat person for sure, but I love all animals. Cats aren't super helpful with security, however...
safer with a dog? every house and building here has heavy steel doors with double locks and bars over the windows. I dont think a dog is going to make that any safer.
I feel more safe with a dog. Maybe you could teach your cat to meow really really loud? Maybe get him a little amplifier he can purr into?
Wonderful. inspiring. Thank you both! You brightened my day.

Me too. He's so chill!
Amazing interview.
Can’t wait to move back to Mexico. GDL specifically when retirement comes. Perhaps a little sooner. Thank you for this great video 👌
