Ringing of the Bells | Return of the Wandering Toroa | DunedinNZ

We’re not sure why or when it started, but for the last few decades, when the northern royal albatross return to Pukekura/Taiaroa Head after a year at sea, it’s been a Dunedin NZ tradition to ring in the return of the wandering toroa for the breeding season. Every year I miss them. But then 5yrs later there is one of my albies come back! And now a new birth soon enough. So a mixed bag of emotions. But you are right, cause I will miss him, as well. Such a big Albatross!

Ranger Sharyn and her grass gifts to the birds when she checked the hatchlings was a joy to watch, she sure is a legend in the bird world, and gentle lovely soul.

I feel so lucky to have visited NZ four times! There is something magical about driving the beautiful Otago Peninsula out to the albatross colony and the Yellow eyed penguin perserve. NZ has a dedicated conservation effort to protect its wildlife. I love the tradition of the Ringing of the Bells and the involvement of the children to educate and inspire them to love their unique species. ❤
