Dunedin is lucky to have a fair numbers of developers who refuse to knock old buildings down, instead they'll refurbish, strengthen and preserve them.
Heroes in my opinion.
Lived in Dunedin for 11 years, loved it, it gets more busy when the students come back after the summer holidays! Worth a drive out on the peninsula to the albatross colony, magic views
Dunedin is a great city! My ancestors came over from Scotland in the 1800's and settled there
The old buildings are beautiful as are the ones in Oamaru. I grew up in Christchurch and really miss some of the lovely old places destroyed by the earthquakes we had here.
You guys make me laugh, Mado always likes the op shops and crystal shops: Glen likes the cafes! Glen you spend more time in the cafes than Mado does in the others, lol ... If you get a chance, do take a trip on the old train to Taieri Plains and up into the heartland where the scenery changes dramatically. It's well worth the cost! Enjoy the South guys. ❤
My family were Scottish and settled in Dunedin in 1850, I was born there and love the place. It's very much a student city with over 20,000 attending Otago University. The Peninsula is amazing, my Grandmother lived in St Clair, a short walk to the beach, fantastic holidays.
It's a third the size of Christchurch with only 130k people, but it has a much more vibrant city centre and more pedestrians.
You got that right but give Christchurch time and it will be a thriving city!
I wouldn’t go that far, it’s the students and the fact no suburban malls in Dunedin.. try it in Winter or go out for a meal on Monday night if anything is open.
Great to see you guys enjoying Dunedin! The city centre is called 'The Octagon' (rather than a square) 😊
Made it to Dunners! Enjoy! Do not forget to burn a couch in the street lol
I’ve removed a few coaches and put them on the streets from jobs we did but unfortunately didn’t put a match to them 😂😂
Dunedin is Scottish! My favourite city after Wellington. One of the founders was a nephew of Rabbie Burns. I hope you try Baldwin Street. It's not for the fainthearted. World's steepest street with a gradient of 35%. Also Lanarch Castle is lovely and Portobello and the Royal Albatross colony.
So happy you have got to Dunedin. Where I went to University, and lived for 25 years. My family are still there. I love the place.
The time and the space is why I came back to nz. Great lifestyle, chilled. Leave the stress to the others
I got such a buzz seeing your impressions of our beautiful city. So glad you enjoyed your stay and hope you got used to the hills.
I live in the lower North Island and love following your journey throughout our beautiful country . Hope the memories will stay with you forever. Take care.
Love your first impression of Dunedin...I am Maori, German, English, Irish and Danish. I am a Maori woman but Catholic. I love history! Family, history, Church history, Maori and NZ history and Ancient History! I would love you both to have a real Maori experience...I noticed you haven't had one yet. Maori welcome, Powhiri, Hangi and Maori Hospitality. I live in the North Island though...
Went to Dunedin but it coincided with fresher's week, so accommodation was at a premium, so we had to take a 15 mile trip to a country inn to get a bed. Nice place, though. Make sure you take the trip along the Otago Peninsula to the albatross colony.
I do wish Dunedin would embrace the history and have more buildings built in the style
Welcome to my city! It was settled by Scots, which is why there's a lot of presbyterian churches. I hope you managed to see more of the city than just the main streets! They've just finished all the new roading in the centre of the city that were under construction when you were there, and itgives the CBD a much friendlier vibe.
After seeing that pie, I am really craving a good Dunedin pie. Everything looks a lot brighter and broader than when we lived there 30 years ago. Fresh paint. Not grey and full of goths any more. And no buskers? I'm surprised the streets and footpaths are so empty so close to xmas. Used to barely be room to pass other pedestrians while doing the xmas shopping. I guess deliveries are making it a bit quieter now? It is around 50% bigger than when we lived there.
@@annwitbrock9112 Hi Ann - yes, there've been a lot of street improvements - especially George Street and in the old industrial area around Vogel Street. Lots of street art, too.
Dunedin, my favourite NZ City. You will find out it was originally a Scottish settlement, not English or Irish. although they settled their too, the predominant settlers were from Scotland Dunedin is Gaelic for Edinburgh and the city is often referred to as Edinburgh of the South. Enjoy your time, it gets better the further south you go!
Yup we found out all the good stuff while staying with locals and interacting with them for 2 weeks while staying there 🙂 we make another video or two here! We start calling it the Scottish city of New Zealand after a while 😂
Awsome having you guys in Christchurch, we have been through allot here and welcome travelers to boost our local businesses
Dunedin today reminds me of Aucklands CBD from the 1970’s. From the 1980’s onwards Auckland lost a lot of old buildings to new developments.
I was born in Dunedin but haven’t been back for a while. Am currently planning a trip down south and have been using videos for inspiration and ideas.
Love the way you guys give the raw and unfiltered first impression. Dunedin is known for the amazing street art/ building murals you fearured. The Railway Station is a beauty for sure and Mado was right and that was a great platform shot. Get those great NZ pies inside you Glen!! A University city that does have vibrancy. Guys 1 more day then you start your Great Walk. First day take plenty of water as no resupply available and a big climb to Luxmore Hut to finish. Enjoy!
I would have done the same: Shout out to my New RUclips Buddies , But we passed paths .
You are doing great passing on your tour around New Zealand. What I saw in 10 days was a lot to take in.
So many campers, campsites: And I mean lots of them (So many to choose from).
Clean and colorful with plants/ Gardens. The roads are just right. People obey the rules of the road. "Just perfect".
Keep up the great work. See you on the next blog. Regards from South Africa 🇿🇦.
25:50 : that's a lovely one as well ... that's the old Dunedin Prison .. ha,ha
For a long time I thought Glen was calling Mado "Madam". Loving your tours around NZ - making me homesick.
So did I!
Penguins are good but the Edinburgh Of The South hosts nearby The Royal Albatross Centre,a world class roosting grounds and educational facility dedicated to this huge marine bird. Not to be missed.
Great video 👌 Stoked you guys captured Dunedins Architecture and thriving city!
Very much looking forward to your next videos 🙏
Thanks for posting, Glen and Mado.
I’ve only been to Dunedin once, on a cruise, but didn’t get to see as much as your video.
Dunedin looks like an awesome little city. The architecture is stunning 🤩
Looking forward to more videos of this beautiful city.
Makes me want to visit 😅
"Beautiful square here" lol 🛑
Drove through Dunedin heading further south - never realised how much more there was to the city. The route we followed was mostly old grey stone buildings that looked more like the Edin borough you see on TV.
Yeah much more than you think actually! We explored more of it in our next videos 😎 it’s really a beautiful place to stay.
Enjoy New Zealand guys!! It is a great place and remember above all in your travels spend lots and lots and lots of money !! We would really apreciate it
Love this vid team!! Magic work
Dunedin is a student city my eldest grandson is there now Otago University is a very old University I believe the first in New Zealand.
We actually visited it and made a video on it which should be up eventually! 🙂 it’s a beautiful university but when we visited it was the holidays so it was a ghost town haha
Absolutely Marvellous - Thanks again G & M
We call those murals too
Street Art 😊
A wonderful look around my home town. So good to see it through your eyes.
Great video, thanks guys
Wow, these vibrant streets and historic buildings are giving Big City vibes! 🏙 Loving the architectural beauty and your raw first impressions. @GlenAndMado Keep exploring and sharing your adventures!
Love your videos as soon as I get sorted I am going down there.
:ike watching your reactions. You often say how quiet NZ towns are, but think on this... New Zealand is bigger than the United Kingdom but has only 5 million people. Imagine about half the population of Greater London spread throughout all of England, all of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland !!! The Uk would seem really quite then, eh?
Yeah it’s mad because New Zealand is also about 3 times bigger then Ireland and it has the exact same population 😂😂 but I’m still adjusting to how quite it is here in this country, I have to realise not to expect so people when visiting towns haha.
Great video guys. When you make it up the west coast, there's a small takeaway shop just north of Greymouth ( heading up the coast road) called Runanga. They have fantastic homemade pies best in greymouth.
Enjoy your travels ❤
Always fun to watching your video
Dunedin is wonderful
Beautiful Vlog
Fabulous. I’m just here now for a few days work and almost did the same walk as you guys. Great job.
Great to see you both enjoying my hometown. I was born and raised in Dunedin but now I live in Tokyo. I miss Dunedin though. It's packed with culture and style.
Fabulous job
there is a mall in the center as well there are a lot of hidden shops
nice, you got to see the unicycle guitar guy!
Best Coffee in Dunedin at the Bagel shop ... Beam me up Bagels .... :-) The bagels would knock the socks off a pie .... :-)
Glad you enjoyed my home town - Edinbough od the South
Ah, my home. ❤
9:17 - I can see where my mum works, she works at Presbyterian support which is right next to first church.
9:46 - that’s where I got my driver’s license. AA
Nice to see my home town, though I no longer live there. Funnily enough recognized a few faces. Great Video
Thanks
Wow! Never got a donation before! Thank you soo so much we will make sure to give it back to the people in need or make good use of it. Hope you’re having a wonderful day. ❤
It's for pies or coffee 😊
Haha very kind of you! How can we thank you!?
Thank you for your video. I lived in Auckland for 7 years & unfortunately never made it to the South Island. After watching this, Dunedin is now on my ‘to do list’. Cheers from Melbourne 🍷!
classic, your turning in to a kiwi eating pies for lunch....Otago is another great place .. plenty going on have a goodie Mado and Glen
Dunedin has many old buildings like Christchurch had. But Dunedin has not had a destructive earthquake, yet!
Great video guys - so funny hearing your take on things. DUNEDIN means the Edinburgh of the south, The plan was based on Edinburgh - there are some quirky features like steep streets due to them not taking into consideration that the land was not flat. Buildings facing south to catch the midday sun. At the railway station the clock tower only has 3 faces (It was considered a waste of money to have a clock face looking out to sea). The main streets are Princess (South) and George with the Octagon in the middle. Robbie Burns Statue has his likeness facing the pubs and his back to the church. Hope you take time to go out on the Peninsula - Lanarch's Castle has beautiful grounds and great views - even if you don't venture inside (Lanarch was an ambitious scotsman who became a parliamentarian and went bankrupt)
Good on you Mado wearing sunglasses n hat 😎🧢
Yeah Dunedin is Gaelic ( Scottish) for Edinburgh 😂
Driving around Dunedin age 6 with me mum, "Mum? What religion are we?" "Um, we're not really that religious tbh. But if we had to say something we'd probably say Presbyterian". Me at school the next day, "Mum says we're not really religious but if we had to say we'd probably be librarians".
If you liked Dunedin, you would like Ballarat Victoria Australia Renate Scanlon Westenberger.
Hello to you both! I randomly stumbled upon your channel and as a Dunedin resident, it has been enjoyable to follow your journey down South and see your first impressions of the place! I’m leaving a comment because unfortunately, one thing in your videos has started to bug me and I’ve been feeling increasingly compelled to say something about it. The majority of the drone footage that you’ve been featuring in your videos is breaking NZ government regulations for flying drones in this country, and there can be major consequences for doing this.
I know I’m not the first person to mention your drone usage, but I noticed that you ignored these comments and are seemingly continuing to fly your drone in disallowed places. To provide a couple examples - your most recent video has drone footage right beside Dunedin Hospital, which has a very frequently used helipad (drones cannot be flown within 4km of this). Secondly, flying a drone in the Mt Cook area is also prohibited given that it’s DOC land, and there are signs stipulating this on-site. Please don’t take my comment comment as criticism or negativity, I really just want to make you fully aware of the NZ drone regulations because to me, your actions come across as quite disrespectful and inconsiderate. I don’t know the full picture - maybe you’ve been granted permits, have taken the footage from elsewhere, or perhaps you’re simply unaware of the rules + consequences. Anyway, I just wanted to air my concerns and wish you all the very best for the remainder of your NZ stay - looking forward to the next Dunedin vid 😎.
pre EQ chch was kinda like this but bigger/ taller buildings
Dunedin is described as the Edinburgh of the south and was settled by the Scottish whereas Christchurch was settled by the English
You make me want to visit my hometown! Funny you say Vogel street reminds you of New York because it’s actually been used as a NYC set for a couple of films.
thats insane we never knew that fact! you should always revisit your home town my friend :)
St Paul's Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral church located in The Octagon near the Dunedin Town Hall in the heart of Dunedin, New Zealand. It's not a Roman Catholic Church.
Dunedin is the most beautiful city!
you should be using the gears to slow down on a hill unless you're driving an automatic.
You two are a couple of real characters. They should give you a TV show I think you’re really funny.
Now that you have gone end to end, which city was your favourite as a tourist? Which city could you see yourself living in?
6.08 that is an abandoned 100+ year old theatre :(
Are you guys coming up to Whangarei?
lol it’s an octagon not a square. Glad you like it though
Good afternoon! Thank you for the video! What camera do you record video on?
Just a go pro 11 my friend 🙂
What do you both reckon about that American tourist couple in the news who have said NZ is hostile to campervan tourists? Did you experience anything similar?
Americans complaint about everything and are entitled. Best ignored lol
Thanks Poindexter

Laughing that at 20:34 I see our blue car and my wife walking in front of of your camera 😂

You’ve New Zealanderised when you start craving for that PIE!!
lol 😂
I hope Maddie didn't hear your pronunciation of "Vogel". Haha!
I've never been to Dunedin. Are you getting Wellington vibes there?
The only thing stopping this from being the perfect Dunedin video was that you didn't stop in at The Albion, the red coffee shop in the background at 16:03 . Excellent video otherwise!
oh do you believe it or not we actually walked into it looking for pies but they didn't have any so I didn't put that footage in haha.
Duendin is similiar to wellys
😊
Good to see you like pies! I reccommend a venison one.
we have had the whiskey and vension ones in Sheffield they were lovely :)
@@GlenAndMado Sounds great! There's a small bakery in Waikouaiti that do nice venison and dark ale pies. Love them!

You two are awesome take care bro…..
The phones are free. Its a safety thing.
Dunedin i think is based on Scotland, and Scottish architecture so that is why it looks European
You needed one of Jimmy's mutton pies.
Not English but Scottish. Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland 🏴 Full of Celtic settlers, no wonder you enjoyed it so much.
the good pies are not in the city :D
There's WAY TOO MANY cars in Dunedin. I've lived here most of my life and in more recent times I've come to recognize how many people depend on their cars. It's actually kinda embarrassing. Nice to see that someone else had noticed this, not just me. Our current government has announced just today that it's increasing the cost of registering a motor vehicle. People will pay it without question. Quite sad really 😔
My dream is to live in Dunedin, you’re lucky to live there :D (I am unable to drive due to my eyesight and also I just prefer to walk everywhere anyway - so don’t worry, I won’t add to the cars when I finally move there with my family!) 🙏🏻
Re earthquake- NZ hasn't had a good history of restoration. It was take a photo of it and pull it down. There was criticism of Christchurch buildings and grand homes that should have been restored.
The rebuild was also a nightmare for so many people with the conservative government's approach to 'fixing' the city.
Dunedin has a Scottish heritage
Yup it sure does!
I herd with all the stores and places .is putting Dunedin so far in depth .I know a couple people there.they was telling me all this
I can't tell if she's got long hair or a short head 😊 but they are a nice couple ❤
Nothing new i can see on this video
The place is a shit hole, spend 12 months here and try to tell me different!
