My great uncle and aunt purchased the castle in the 1930s and had to fully restore it. My mother had her 1st Christmas in the Ball Room in 1936. She has a photo album given to her by her mother, sadly it fell into ill repair when they were forced to sell due my great uncles health. When we returned from Australia in 1975 we showed the album to Mrs Barker and she sobbed realizing there still so much work to do to get the castle and grounds into the same condition it once was. The Barker family have done an amazing job over what now must be at least 60 years. Larnach named the 'castle' The Camp. My great aunt lived to 100 years old and lived in castle street Dunedin, she had many antiques from the castle including two smaller stone lions at her homes front entrance.
Thankyou guys for a wonderful, professional video of my home town and Peninsula. I enjoyed the comment on how the landscape reminded you of Ireland. Looking forwarf to your video of one of my favourite places, the Catlins. Thankyou again and Best Wishes to you both.
Ahhh my home town ... used to ride our horses from Highcliff over the high road to the Portobello show once a year, and every Sunday up the high road to Pony Club by Bloems Poltery farm.
Glen: YOU not just the man. But a Gentleman as well. Always greeting people who are total strangers. Show that friendly way to say "How are you". (Doesn't cost money to be a Gentleman). Mado: You are just a Lady. "Like a wild child". No matter what, you put a 100% in your heart to make great videos. Regards South Africa 🇿🇦.
First time viewer & I loved this video. I live in Dunedin but it's so great to see my beautiful home town displayed to the world 🌎 THANKYOU. Stay safe & enjoy your travels ❤❤❤
Glad you had such a good time in my home town. BTW - Larnach is pronounced LAA-nuck. Well done for giving those tourists a lift! Some nice cutting in the video between Larnach Castle and the Soldiers memorial - the views, coming down the steps, etc.
Christchurch has a Castle on a hill with amazing views over the city and the snow ❄️ mountains in winter. Two stories with an amazing staircase, it has knights , shields, etc also has a cafe / bar . It's free 😊
Have just discovered your videos, and very interesting. I'm house sitting in this area of Dunedin ,with the same amazibg views Beautiful!I love Larnachs Castle and the history too , and creepy vibes. I live in Dunedin ,and have been there about 3 times. Definitely worth a visit . Avoid cruise ship season if you can , can get pretty crowded at the tourist attractions as you saw.
I have lived in Dunedin and just out of Dunedin for almost 16 years and I've still not been to Larnach Castle so I really enjoyed seeing it in this video. Going to have to check out more of your videos 🙂 Side note I was born and raised in Invercargill, so I'll have to go watch those videos next
The book 📖 boxes you were talking about that you said you had seen around different places around New Zealand 🇳🇿, in some towns they have swap produce boxes like homemade jams and chutneys and vegetables and fruit.
Thank you Glen and Mado for sharing your experiences traveling around New Zealand, I'm a born and bred New Zealander and a lot of these places that you have visited i haven't even seen yet maybe in a couple of year's when my wife retires i retired 3 year's ago 😅.
True, I to wouldn't have paid that but I can see how it would cost a bit for the upkeep so it is probably a justifiable cost but like you it's something I wouldn't pay for. Done your good deed for the day Glen, good for you mate.
I agree. It is too dear for the albatrosses. I live in Dunedin and have only ever gone to the end and had something to eat and drink there. However, I can understand why they need to charge so much.
I live in Waikouaiti, 30 mins North of Dunners right on the beach. If I'd found ur channel before today I would've put U up at our house for a night or 2!! We're even within stumbling distance from the pub lol
Hey you two. Have you been to Olveston house it's a huge house. Built by a Jewish family importing furniture for a living. I was told it better than Larnachs castle. We loved our visit. You like trains the station is worth the visit. Settlers Museum has Josephine the actual Fairlie train inside. There is a maccano model of it in a different area. Oamaru if you like steam punk, that is amazing fantastic.
What a awesome video ... this is embarrassing I'm born, raised and still live in Dunedin and I've only been to Larnach Castle twice and been to the carpark at the Albatross colony... hmm but great video 😊
I'm from Dunedin, and I've never been inside Larnach's Castle. Most school kids go in primary school, but I missed it somehow. It costs just to go in the garden. I have visited the garden. It is too expensive for locals really. I think it is a little ridiculous.
Such a shame you didn't see the Albatross, they are huge birds, nothing like the sea gulls that you saw. they have wing spans wider than Glen is tall. The cost includes a guide, you see them fly past really close by and you can also see the disappearing gun. And it is $NZ50 not 50 euro as you said, only 25 euro. It seems a lot but I was in Europe last year and you pay just as much to see less. Albatross are amazing flyers, they can get to Australia in a day and fly faster than a helicopter just by gliding, using the wind and surfing above the waves. As a Dunedinite I really liked your videos.
Completely understand my friend and really appreciate the comment, the problem is we’re living from savings and we try to minimise the expenses as much as possible as we’re travelling for a year or so or more at a time and need the experience to last as long as possible 😅 it all depends on the person too and the interest they have so we would probably end up spending it on something else that we really like for example. But your right we did miss out on this spectacular moment unfortunately 🙌
You would be paying not just to see albatrosses but seals and especially the rare yellow eyed penguins. The tour is on a sand buggy and they take you very cautiously to a built in shelter where you get to see the penguins pretty close up. Love your hair Mado.
I have a quiation tho do you guys reli on youtube or do you guys have jobs or is joutube tour guys joba i am just curios beacuse how tou guys get to travel over in mz and have money to able to pay for wverything wehn i am in nz alao wanne travel the hall nz it lokks alot of fun tho
Wow that's expensive for bird sanctuary. You got to remember that fuel costs so much money here (NZ Government Taxes, they even taxing EV's @ $74? Per 1000 kms) the further the town or stores etc the more everything costs, like cafes, stores, fuels, hardware everything.
Yeah you did that right Roger! 😂 we were shocked and would prefer to spend the money on groceries on pak n save 😂 wow never knew the fact about electricity cars though!
Theres is a house at the bottom of the hill where Larnach's guests used to stay when they had big parties and before they crossed the harbour - I've been to a few parties at that house it is huge, never wanted to go to the "Castle" ever - looks shit.
I first caught up on u2 when you hiked up to Conical hill at the top of the Route Burn track. It brought me back to when I lived in Queenstown when I woke up really early on a Saturday. I looked out the window & it was totally blue sky not a cloud anywhere just blue sky. I woke up my wife & said we are going up the Route burn. What an amazing day, we were over taken by professional photographers running up the track the only difference to your experience was it was a totally cloudless day a very very rare occurrence.
thats a special memory to remember forever! I'm so happy that you got to experience such good weather! what an absolute gem of a hike. were so lucky to get to see such a place in our lifetimes. thanks for watching wayne and we hope you get plenty of more hikes in over the incoming years 😉
I live in Dunedin. It is totally worth the entry price. You failed to go into enough depth about the extremely story about the man who built it and his dysfunctional family. Your superficial view of it is just that. You need to pick up your game before you come up with headers like this one.
You are such a gentleman Glen - helping those American tourists.🙂 LOL, Mado, the portrait above the fireplace was Queen Victoria😄
local kiwi here and i just love you guys! thanks for showing us the spots we dont normally see. appreciate the both of you .. NZ loves ya!
Same here also a born and bred Kiwi 😊
We do our best my friend 🙂❤️ thanks for tuning in!
you dont know what you missed that tour is well worth every cent
Wow another great video from you guys😊😊. Greetings from Norway antipodes to New Zealand 🇳🇿
Wow all the way from Norway! How awesome 🙌

It was very nice of Glen to offer those America's a ride,👍❤
Thanks!
Omg thanks so much! That will definitely help!♥️
You are an awesome couple Glen and Mado. Really personable. I always enjoy watching your videos.
Shane you absolute gentleman! Thanks for supporting us always. Would be awesome to bump into you one day
Love the way you edited this film when you were in different locations. 😊
Something a little different! 😂
Such enjoyable videos well done guys
I loved that castle, went twice as a child and my grandad told the best made up yarns that only a grandad can xx

Loving the way you pronounce the names lol having a wee chuckle.
I’d say so! 😂
9:42 Larnach was posh, but he wasn't quite that posh. That was a portrait of Queen Victoria!
That's the kiwi way Glenn, well done mate 👊
Thats the Irish way to.

Thanks guys for showing me what I'm missing out on .. I keen to travel around my country soon .. so cute that you missed each other while filming
Thanks for tuning in Karlo! Hope you’re having a lovely day! Haha a little break from each other will only make us stronger 😂

Love your drone shots
Appreciate it!

Thanks for tuning in my friend 🙂🙌 hope your trip goes smooth!
" very true that, wise words " 💚
The book 📖 boxes you were talking about that you said you had seen around different places around New Zealand 🇳🇿, in some towns they have swap produce boxes like homemade jams and chutneys and vegetables and fruit.
We also seen that too! It’s really awesome the way kiwis use such systems 🙂🙌

I have a niece and her family who live out at Portobello It is a lovely spot.
Great gesture Glen, sounds like they thought you were one of the All Blacks ! :)
Americans can't conceive of someone helping without payment (tips).
They learned a valuable lesson.
Was in Dunedin last week, and stayed in the Peninsula. Weather was Fab
You got very lucky! I hope you enjoyed every moment 🙂
Yoy have greT heard helping the tourist out love for that❤

Great stuff.
What a awesome video ... this is embarrassing I'm born, raised and still live in Dunedin and I've only been to Larnach Castle twice and been to the carpark at the Albatross colony... hmm but great video 😊
Now every time I see Glen I feel saddened because of his struggle in the past, at least he is happy now.
love it, great together as well individuals, you should marry that girl, love your work
Good times. NZ is expensive. Lots of free things to see and do on the peninsula.
Been living here for 2 years, moving asap
good vid
You guys didn't see the castle in oamaru?
I'm from Dunedin, and I've never been inside Larnach's Castle. Most school kids go in primary school, but I missed it somehow. It costs just to go in the garden. I have visited the garden. It is too expensive for locals really. I think it is a little ridiculous.
Did you see the Alice in Wonderland statues in the garden?
I grew up there its a good spot but the prices are beyond criminal
The palace of versailles is only 20 nz dollars .
NZ prices are over the top.
Freshly Sean!
@@MichaelEnright-gk6yc Economies of scale, 50M people visit Paris each year, ~400K visit Dunedin.
You should get out around the coast and gather some shellfish - pipis, mussels, oysters, paua. Maybe find someone who can show you.
I’m sure you could show us haha
Did you run into any ghosts at Larnach Castle?
Not this time 😂
What part of Ireland are you from.

hahah yeah!

A little mistake 😂
It's Edinburgh of the South

you have to buy a ticket to visit the castle now? . . .used to be free 50 years ago...
You got that right Donald! 50 dollars my friend
Some of those prices are crazy. Way out of range for most people living here😢

Lar-nick Castle as we say heref
the larnach castle is actually haunted, if you didnt know
We never knew!
It was queen Victoria
Not sheared they are shawn
Larnach's story is sad, the castle to me feels sad 😢
Seems like the AI subtitles are having an aneurysm trying to get through the accents.
Good karma @ 6:30
Royal Albatross is not worth the money but the rest is
Its larnach castle,say larnich
$60 too see 👀 birds even too expensive for some of us New Zealanders i'm like you both thrifty 😅😅
I know absolutely madness haha, couldn’t see us paying that!
