- The footage shows several non breeders socializing and some are giving mid air bill kisses while they hover overhead before landing. I could read the bands of YRK (timestamps provided below) for certain - but the ones in the beginning of the video it is too far away to identify who they are. YRK may be one of them as well. Ranger Sharyn Broni gave an update on OGK today and it is not the news we have been hoping for. It confirms what our hearts knew but our head kept hoping for that miracle return. OGK was a magnificent albatross and one of the best Royalcam Dad's and faithful mate to YRK since 2006. He will always be remembered for his devotion to his family, especially returning injured in 2020 just so he could feed Atawhai Pippa. OGK & YRK have fledged 6 chicks and raised one foster chick over their years together including the Royalcam chicks Atawhai & Lilibet, & daughter KBR and sons RLK & LWK. Our hearts are heavy with this loss but our hopes lie with YRK finding love again next season. Here is the message from Sharyn.
"Although we do not know for sure it looks like the much-loved OGK has not returned following his disappearance in the winter of 2022 while raising Royalcam chick, Lilibet. He would be 26 years this coming January and was one of the first cohorts of chicks that I saw raised here at Pukekura.

OGK has been with YRK since 2006 as toroa typically mate for life. 2022 was their eighth breeding attempt. They have fledged six of their own chicks and one foster chick (This was a chick of Button's).
They have raised the foster chick after the egg they laid was broken during 2018. The first chick they raised is a breeding female and the natal mother of the 2018 Royalcam chick, Amīria. During 2021 their 2012 chick RLK (male) raised a chick known as SSTrig near the Royalcam chick, Tiaki. YRK would, by late October be preparing to lay an egg. Instead, she is looking for a new mate as is typical of bereaved toroa as the urge to mate is strong.
There is no way of knowing what has happened to OGK.
We do know that there are certain risks on the ocean such as plastic pollution and long-line fishing. Disease and starvation cannot be discounted either. OGK had sustained an injury in 2020 and we do not know what long-term impact this may have had. In the event you come across any wildlife in NZ call our emergency hotline 0800 DOC HOT (0800 362 468).
Although as a group albatross are at high risk from long-line fishing this does not seem to be the case for Northern Royal Albatross. Comparatively few are recorded on long lines compared to Antipodean Albatross, for example. The conservation status of Antipodean Albatross is Nationally Critical due to bycatch and marine pollution. in comparison the Northern Royal Albatross are Nationally Vulnerable. Heartbreaking for all of us,I knew something bad must have happened but praying that miracles do happen..let's hope his mate beautiful YRK will realized he has gone and move on to her new life!❤

I was hoping for OGK to make a grand appearance. My heart is broken. He was a super dad for sure.
We knew deep inside that OGK was not returning , him not returning to his baby last season was a strong indication of that but we still held on to the slimmest of hope Rest Easy OGK . I just hope YRK will find companionship once again
OGK will be remembered for his dedication to YRK and his offspring. I'll never forget seeing him limping around after being gone so long just to feed his baby. I do hope that his ending was as painfree as it could possibly be. He was a great father and mate. I hope YRK can find a suitable mate so she can move on. I bet she's heartbroken 😢

Thank you, dear Lady Hawk, for this lovely video and especially confirming that it is YRK in at least 4 of the 5 "albie-kiss" moments. Since we have now heard from Ranger Sharyn Broni that it is highly unlikely that OGK will return so late in the season and we know that this would be the egg-laying period, it is sad news indeed. However, on the bright side, it is very good to see that YRK is choosing to (literally) drop-in to socialize with other albies and to go a step further by having a good "sniff" to catch a whiff of the unique scent of particular albies. I will always have an OGK-shaped space in my heart for her dear, lost mate. He was a dedicated, strong and caring mate and dad to YRK and their offspring. ✨✨💖💗💖✨✨ Now, my hope is for YRK to find a truly compatible and strong, well-mannered and dedicated mate in her own good time. She is a wise and strong female, having been through not seeing OGK or smelling his scent on their chick and/or nest site since last June, but raising their chick to fledging and checking twice to be sure their chick had fledged. May she find another True Mate to share her life with, hopefully for a long, long time. ✨✨💖💖✨✨
Awww!. YRK has to face this sad reality but she must go on and that she will. Wishing happy years ahead with a new mate for YRK. OGK, you are loved. We miss you and you will always be in our hearts. 🧡

😢😔☹️ poor sweet OGK, and he never got to see his sweet QT Lilibet before she fledged 😔. Thank you for the update Lady Hawk, it is sad but it helps to know that my mindset must switch gears and now begin rooting for YRK to find another mate. It is nice to see her doing this mid air beak kisses 🥰😍🥰, she’s adorable! I wonder how smart the albies are, for instance; does she remember that OGK didn’t return during Pippa’s season? Did she come to the island expecting he was going to be there for certain? Or was she thinking he might not be back? I suppose it comes down to how good their memory is. In some ways their memory is magnificent! They can remember to come back years after fledging, to not just the island they were raised on- but to the very nesting spot they were raised on! Considering how far they travel, retaining the memory of locations is even more impressive.
Hi Centurian Eagle the albatross spend so much time apart that when OGK didn't return after that fateful day in May 2022 - YRK just kept doing what she normally has done for all her breeding years. They don't expect to see one another during this long breeding cycle and then the fledging of their chick so I think when Lilibet fledged, she left here fully expecting to see OGK again in their next breeding season. She came home right to Top Flat - the place they nest at and she waited and looked for him all these weeks. I think the realization is now setting in that he is not coming back and she will move forward in time and find a new mate. This news was NOT what we wanted to hear!! I think we all knew inside that something happened to OGK - he would never ever leave his Lilibet and not come back unless he couldn't 💔💔😥 When they do return to the colony it is more on instinct from their built in navigation system - I would suppose some of it is memory though! I really really hope and pray that we see QT Lilibet again now that we know her Dad - the great OGK has passed away. She is the last of his offspring - the last living legacy of him! 💞💞

Yes I really hope we do see QT Lilibet then, she is his last legacy! Also Pippa Atawhai, who we’ll be seeing too I hope, and more than likely before QT, so it will be great to see her too knowing she’s also a legacy from OGK. It’s so sad he’s gone, I hope whatever happened to him it wasn’t human caused, like garbage or something for example, we’ll never know, but it would just be terrible if that was the case. That's too bad about OGK. He was a fun dad. He was chatty. He vocalized more than some of the other parents. I remember he would spend the night near Atawhai (aka Pippa) after she was already out of the guardianship phase, and she was mostly spending nights alone. I haven't noticed other parents do that. And I remember when he covered Atawhai with squid ink, and he seemed not to notice, but YRK noticed, and she tried in vain to preen the baby's feathers. These two are/were favorite couple, and their babies are fun to watch too.
I always think about that too!!!! I remember being so happy he would have sleepovers with his adorable Pippa when she was in the post guard stage, I’m sure she felt so safe having him there those nights without having to have to be all alone- listening to the crazy night sounds, like those cute penguins 😂. It’s weird how there’s so many significant moments that happen all throughout the season, every single year, yet there is sometimes certain things that made such an impression that it stuck with so many viewers.

OGK was my favorite Albie Father. I too, remember many nights he would spend near his beloved Pippa, just to keep her company so she wouldn't be alone!! RIP dearest OGK!

Thanks for the update, he has a good innings as we say in the UK, and did really well producing so many chicks and a foster.
It is tough down there even without mans efforts making it harder sadly. He has helped the colony expand though. A toast to absent friends as they say.
