Redrawing + analyzing the Tigerstar and Sasha comics (REUPLOAD)

- In this video, I'll be redrawing a page from the first Tigerstar and Sasha Warriors manga, and discussing what I think the main problems with the original are. I'll also show some of my research about the comic artist, because I think he might not be the one to blame for the quality.

I feel like the issue with the original art is that the artist tried to merge realistic human features with cartoon-esque cats and that sorta doesn't work,,, The thing is, the cats in the book are more semi-realistic, but in the sense that they look more realistic human than realistic cat, so it gets a tad strange.
idk just a hunch. He's clearly really talented though, but probably has more experience with drawings of humans and less anthropomorphized animals
I think i agree with this. While Northflower makes a great point in that you bring over things you've learned whenever you draw new things, there are also cons to that, and that's that sometimes you unintentionally bring over aspects and/or anatomy from what you're used to drawing. I started off drawing cats because of warriors, but even after drawing actual human characters for many years, I've been told that the way I draw eyes is still rather catlike. (Though apparently those who've said that seem to like it so... I guess whether this bleed is a con or a secret pro really depends lol.) Either way, I think it's plausible that the artist unintentionally leaned towards more human anatomy if they're unused to drawing cats.

I think the ring instead of the "usual bell" was actually a good touch.
I wouldn’t call the art in this manga terrible, I’ve definitely seen worse. I’d say the style doesn’t make movement for the cats look great, it looks wonky if anything. It’s also not coloured, so it makes it look more dull if anything.
It sometimes sort of looks like the drawing I would make when I didn't know how to do any anatomy yet, so I would try to follow anatomy a little too strictly -> stiff poses

I feel what happened is that they hired an artist with the wrong kind of experience, without checking that his artwork fit the style. The result is realistic looking cats with some of the scariest faces. This was clearly an attempt for the author to try and make it a "manga" by making the face like a 90s anime character and it falls flat on its face. I feel like if the author was making it a regular comic rather than it being a "manga", it would have turned out way, way, better.

Nice art northflower! I’m starting to realize just how hard it is on an artist to make a comic....having to draw enough pictures for one would be enough to give me a headache....but on a TIME LIMIT?? .............just no.

The art in this manga isn't horrible, but it drains a lot of the personality of the cats with the limited movement and without books to describe everything. Most explaining goes into boxes, and I do like the Graystripe's Adventure/SkyClan and the Stranger/Ravenpaw's Path/A Shadow In RiverClan style better. It allows more expression, the cats are recognizable, and more action can happen if you can understand what's going on without constant exposition and explaining. Another problem is - there's no color to rescue them!
Also, I hate when people say they're "fixing" things. It's implied they think theirs is better, or that the original was terrible, especially when they lost the actual concepts no matter how "ugly" they are. I remember watching a video that "fixed" things that they claimed were the "worst", and by worst, they probably meant their level of appeal. They could have said redesign, and even then, their "fixes" weren't very great because they lost most of the original concepts and their redesigns were purely based on opinion, some of which lost their appeal because of that.
It seems there's more time being spent into the mangas. A Shadow In RiverClan seemed to take a sizable time, and though I know that if cats cry in real life, there's something wrong with them, it portrays human emotion and feelings - regret, hurt, and sadness. The cats in Warriors already have those emotions, so I think that throwing in human characteristics that cats can't normally experience like tasting and shrugging would be fine and would make it easier to understand these cats' emotions.
To be fair, we aren't cats so maybe tiger heart is really handsome in her eyes.
But I feel the art style might be a mix of timing issue, publishers being stingy, and the artist style not fitting on cats but again didn't have the time to make it work

i honestly really like the original comic (mainly the story, but i don’t really mind the art). i think some of the facial expressions are a bit wonky (i think the main issue was the eyes going off in different directions), but i think it’s fun ! i do love that sasha got to be a little sea cat that was adorable

One thing that I greatly love about your redraw is the value contrast (Oh, look at me using fancy words!). You’re colors go dark but also quite light in other places, which leads to a clearer more appealing look in general !

Even though, like you said, it's obvious you're not used drawing panels like this, I still prefer your cause the caracters are way more expressives, and, as you aimed for a more cartounished style, you can make them more unique

Claiming that you're "fixing" someone else's art is incredibly arrogant. You're basically just adding your own tweaks after the artist has done all the actual work. Nice to see there's at least one person in this fandom who understands that.

I enjoy it a lot more becouse the original was pretty light and I personally found it hard to read! While yours there's a distinct show between the cats, the background, and the words

A thing that’s always bothered me about the original art is that the cats don’t have fur tufts... like they look naked
i said it before and i'll say it again, the rise of scourge is the best warriors manga.
also, long shadows. i think they could've been more creative and would love to see how you change it.

when i was in elementary school my friends LOVED the warriors novels but i was too poopoo brain to read chapter books so i read the comics ALL the time and now i have a bit of a soft spot for them, even though the art can be.. wonky at times. also the scourge manga is SUPER underrated i love it so much

I read the thumbnail in the tune of Mr Brightside, which made me read the title in the tune of Mr Brightside-
The talk about "fixing" at the start reminded me of a time when I posted my artwork in a discord server, and someone dmed me with their TRACED SKETCH of MY ART, without my permission (they literally had my image with low opacity in the background...), and said "fixed it" like WHAT??? I didn't ask for you to, plus you're tracing without permission? They even had the audacity to post it in the server chat... Tracing is okay if you 1. Have permission or 2. Are tracing an image that is made for reference (like a photograph), or 3. Are tracing SKETCH ONLY for POSE ONLY or because you can't get a nose, mouth, eye, etc to look right. Of course that's my opinion, but it was also my art that they were tracing and those are my rules about tracing my art.

I think yours it better. The original artist did a really good job but the semi-realistic art style looks more like Aristocats rather than Warriors. I think the more cartoony style fits Warriors better.

I like the art style in HawkWing's journey a lot- I've only ever read 4 super editions and the art styles weren't the same- but I think it's interesting the way it's drawn/shaded

This vid was made 2 years ago, ik, but what mainly bothered me about the artstyle is that it NEVER gave the cats fur- they never even drew any strong of fur or anything, just virtually nothing, and it made the cats look bald and uncanny. I feel like most people that don't draw felines alot forget that fluffy cats exist. But overral, I actually think the art style is quite nice- not something for me, I can say, but it can look very cool

To keep my art accurate, at the sketch stage i look at refferences to make sure everything is accurate, and sometimes I just take a break.

Comic book artists tend to cover up a lot of anatomical issues and emotion shots with cool poses and dynamics. even when they draw people, they struggle with expression and anatomy animals consistently exhibit a difficulty for traditional comic artists, however, even amongst that considered, the warriors manga is a bit sloppy, wether rushed or a lack of interest i cant say.

Theres a difference with manga and comic
You entirely made a redraw of the manga but its NOT a manga,you made a comic.
A comic focuses more into actions just like how you changed the perspective of the characters.
While manga focuses more into emotional reactions,that's why the original looks like a human's reaction.
Some mangas have colors but most of them are just black and white,the original doesnt seem to have alot of screentones but your redraw has alot which is ok since it adds more scenery for the viewers to see.
The difference between "manga" and "comic" is that manga is japanese. Neither mine nor the original is technically a manga, the original just calls itself that for what I assume to be marketing reasons.
