I went to Guitar Center the other day to try and find a pedal that could give me the distortion tone I've been really wanting. I didn't know exactly what I wanted so I tried multiple pedals ranging from $100- $400 and ultimately they just felt uninspiring. I saw that they had a used sd-1 for $20 and I thought I might as well check it out. I was seriously blown away when I started playing and it made me want to keep playing. I bought it and I stack it with a plumes overdrive and it has this huge natural sounding distortion that I cant get enough of. Not to mention it also has a lot of versatility depending on my guitar volume. I love buying great cheap gear and I think a lot of guitarists try to justify their spending habits and dismiss really good gear that could get them exactly where they want for a significantly cheaper price. This pedal gets a 10/10
I've had mine since it came out in 1981. It's 42 years old. It looks like hell, has played 100s of shows mostly in the 80s. It has never let me down and it's still working the same as the day it was new. Rock on Max!
I've been using the SD-1 for almost 20 years. I run it through the clean channel of my solid state Fender Princeton Chorus. It provides all the drive and gives me killer tone that cuts through the mix. LOVE IT.
You've just made me scour the depths of my pedal cupboard to find my SD-1! Great demonstration of a great pedal. It's funny how as guitar players our attention is grabbed by the latest gear while sometimes overlooking the classics already in our collections. Personally speaking, I would never invest in a so called boutique pedal. Not that I have anything against them, I've just been playing long enough to know that I can get the tone I need with more down to earth gear! Oh and I'm cheap!!! lol
Latest gear? I always end up buying cheap crappy pedals that just about get the job done. Weirdly, those eventually start being sought after after vids like this, or when JHS features them, lol.

I've seen people (i.e gear snobs) turn up their nose at the SD-1 without even trying it because its a 1) Boss pedal and 2) costs under $50. Too bad..they don't know what they are missing.
I've never understood why people hate Boss products; they're great value for money, and many famous musicians have used them for years. Even the Boss combo amps like the Katana are fantastic for the price range.
I've been using the Boss SD-1 live at all my gigs for years and it's wonderful! Nt only do I use it for more gain on leads so my rhythms are not so distorted, it tightens up the bottom end, and smooths those highs that Marshalls are known for.
This is the best and has been my main overdrive! Runs in the family! Using my dads original SD1 he passed on to me! Great condition with box 40 years later
On my board, no shit, this pedal sits between 2 -350.00 custom pedals, and I buy pedals all time and this 50 dollar wonder just stays there ,while others come and go. Great video max! Love the channel.
Fantastic demo ! Great tone ! and it's YELLOW and the guitar is YELLOW and it was all... YELLOW 👀 Look at the stars, Look how they shine for you And all the things you do
Yes! I completely agree with Everything you said 3:00-6:00 !!! My thoughts exactly! I'm all my 20+ years of playing I'm only just now in recent years getting into OVERDRIVE pedals (versus DISTORTION) and this is my favorite!!!
Still have my Boss HM2 that I got in 85' and still works as good as when I got it. When I tried SD-1 vs HM2 they seemed the same except for the bass/treble instead of single tone control. Great pedals either way!
I got a Boss Heavy Metal HM-2 when they first came out in '84. The only two "high-gain" metal pedals available then were the Boss HM-2and the DOD American Metal... remember those?
I’ve been kicking the rock of buying this pedal down the street for a lot of years. I finally decided to order it today (now that it costs twice as much as it did 5 years ago).
Still my go to overdrive. This pedal is the perfect match for any Marshall amp. I also use the OCD which is a bit more powerful on the Drive side then the SD1. I did a side by side, the OCD drive at 12noon is the same as the SD1 full mode.
Bought mine off my mate Tiddles in the Burns Howff (a long closed Rock Pub in Glasgow Scotland) back in 1982 for £40! Still using it, a truly great pedal!

Nothing compares to the OD1 , used to use it back in the 80s into a jcm 800 Marshall with a Gibson explorer ajd my sound was just like white snake , black sabbath , satriani and Eddie - just an amazing sound with lots of overtones and sustain
Sabbath, EVH, ? Had you added Randy Rhoads, I be already ordering one right now. But definitely sounds like you got a great tone. 🎸. It so happens i have a boss katana 50. I am seriously considering it.

I'd recommend the earthquaker plumes over the sd1, but only because of the 3 way switch to select different clipping diodes. Plisnits made local to me and it's still fairly affordable at 99 bucks. The boss sd1 is a great pedal though.
