My first guitar pedal :) Dad bought one when I got my first electric about 20 years ago. For years I thought it was just cheap and relatively good dirt box. It wasn't until a couple of years ago that I learned that it was actually very liked and used even at professional level. Thanks dad and local music store guy! Still my default, go to, favourite drive. My friend and a bandmate as kids had DS-1 and I never understood how he got a decent sound out of it (until this spring). SD-1 on the other hand had a drive knob that made it sound good, a volume knob that was good and a tone knob that made it sound good. Super easy to get it to sound nice. And I always liked the character and mid hump Q better than tubescreamer. The enlightment came from learning about the classic way of pushing the volume, then adding drive knob to taste for character. Recently I also heard how someone used SD-1 as a makeshift treble booster for not being able to afford and acquire one.
I've used an SD-1 forever. Sounds great as a clean/slightly dirty boost to tighten up fat amps like Dual Recs and 6505s. I also really like using one as a bass overdrive as it cuts just enough of the low end to make a really cool Lemmy style bass overdrive tone.
Honestly it’s the one pedal I can’t get away from. I use the Waza Craft version but never on the custom side. I use it with my JCM800 studio the little 20 watt guy and man…. It just slays
No shame in an Epi bro, I've got the Jerry Cantrell Wino signature and it's honestly my favorite guitar I've ever owned and that's been MANY lol. Check it for yourself. Oh and I also did some tasteful upgrades like pickups, locking tuners and orange drop caps. Gibson killer ALL DAY LONG. Rock on man.
Just makes my Marshalls sound amazing. Once I learned about cranking the volume and drive to taste, complete game changer. Recently acquired a 2nd one recently that’s stock, my other has a resistor (C6) clipped that makes the tone knob much more usable and opens the SD-1 way up
It’s simply the best of the classic ODs. I wasn’t into the black with yellow text on the anniversary version when I first saw it, but I gotta say it’s growing on me.
You can even use an SD-1 as an "amp" after a DS-1 Distortion. The SD-1 set up slightly driven to mimic a crunchy amp into an amp set up clean and the DS-1 before it with as much distortion as you like. The DS-1 "sees" the SD-1 as an overdriven amp and sounds better and not as nasty like going directly to a clean amp. Very versatile pedal and underrated by the boutique lovers because of the low price.
Criss Olivia did use 2 SD-1's but he used it into a some kind of clean'ish amp, most likely a JMP or JCM 2203 or 2204, using the low Input. His settings were: one did have the Tone Knob dimed & one on zero but the drive was also maxed out on both, making it noisy as hell obiously, but he had a gate going. He did also use a CE-2 and a bunch of Eq's to further shape the sound 👍🤘

Thats right Criss used two of them one with tone full and one with no Tone at all, but he used the clean channel of his amplifier. Great one , keep it up 👍

I remember reading a Guitar For The Practicing Musician article and Jason Bieler and Zakk Wylde said that was their favorite pedal way back in the early 90's. Was always impressed with that magic box.
I've had a SD1 for a long time but didn't use it much. But recently, I've been appreciating its usefulness and application. Sounds great before a high gain amp, and great to tighten distortion pedal on a clean amp. Or to add a lil' bit of sizzle to a clean or crunch tone.
I just got an SD1 to use as another drive pedal in front of my Vox AC15. It sounds awesome. I used to have a TS9DX which I wasn’t really getting along with. The SD1 really seems like a fuller, more aggressive version of that!
Yeah Criss Oliva was said to use two SD-1's with the tone control settings as you show in the video. The thing that always puzzled me was that he apparently got all his dirt from those two pedals. I read that he always ran his amps clean through the low input channel. I just find it hard to believe that he ran his amp all clean and all dirt was from the pedals only. When I listen to live and studio recordings of him it does sound more to me like he used one to push a Marshall style amp (JCM800 or JMP) and the second one as a solo boost. I believe he maybe ran into low output of a Marshall, cranked it and then pushed it with his SD-1's instead of using the high input setting and pushing that as everyone else would have done. One thing for sure is I just went out and finally bought a used SD-1 yesterday and I will be experimenting all weekend with how to combine this together with my EQD Plumes and see how close I can get to Criss' tone. Again thanks for the video. Great content as always! Cheers!
I run my sd1 into my dark matter from tc electronic. The dark matter is more of a slightly higher gain overdrive instead of a distortion in my opinion but it's also a little more full range so when you run the sd1 into it it's more like boosting a jcm800. One of my favorite tones.
Best overdrive pedal to run in front of a hungry Marshall! Actually have two and that's how much I like it (one is WazaCraft, one is stock)! Great playing and tones like always from Leon Todd. You nail it again! :-)
@@LeonTodd Hi Todd, yes the Waza is really good and in the standard mode, it is identical sound-wise to my stock MIJ model. Hm, from the sound of the two sd pedals sounds like Criss Oliva's early tone from the Sirens era. Doesn't sound like his Hall of the Mountain King era or later tone, but still awesome.

From what I understand, Criss used the two SD-1 pedals into a cleanish Marshall, likely on the verge of breakup depending on how he picked. Then he'd get the bulk of his gain, apparently, from the SD1s.
Hello- I’m doing the exact same thing soon. OD3 as crunch/rhythm and SD-1 as lead/boost pedal- do you get a significant volume boost when switching the SD1 on, on top of the OD3?
Criss ran all his amps clean and used the 2 Boss OD pedals for his rhythm and lead. The rolled off for rhythm then kicked in the rolled up tone one for lead.
i love my SD-1 but i find the brighter tone it has versus my TS9 works better with extended range guitars or even just lower tuned guitars, especially with an extra volume boost afterwards since i find mine has a bit of a volume drop? i still need a bit more volume with it on just about everything but my EMG equipped guitars, whereas they all work fine without it thru my TS9. 7 string into an SD-1 boosting a marshall tho and i get a real nasty tone that just sounds evil lol oh yeah, and as a standalone drive into a clean amp, the SD-1 has a lot more life to it imo. the brighter sound works really well, i only really use my TS9 as a boost since as a standalone drive it just sounds kinda dull
Great video. I've been trying to use the SD1 with a Marshall sounding amp without much success. I find that the same way it removes some of the bass, it also kills the high end, which is not very pleasant for this kind of amp. I started using it at the front of a NUX Amp Academy pedal in Fender mode. It really shines there. Any advice on getting to work better with a Marshall sound? Great video. Thank you
I just bought this pedal but at the moment it goes through a fender rumble 25watts for bass guitar as I play mainly bass, i just started to learn guitar and I would like to know which amp would you recommend me to play at home at have a great sound with this pedal as at the moment it doesnt sound really good, thank you all
Love the SD1! Happy 40th! Do you ever use it in front of your Axe/FM3? A shootout would be cool between using the SD1 in the Drive block vs thru a real SD1 in front. 👍
Preference? Maxon od808, or sd1? I’ve always used the od808, but I’ve never really compared it to anything. I just really like the maxon and never felt the need to use a different one. But 10 years later, it’s all beat up and the pots are starting to fall out and i think it might be time to replace it. I basically just use it, like you said, as a pre-eq and boost for my 6505+ on 100% of the time. Anyway, sd1 sounds good here, but I never really know until I actually play through it.

I bought a klon-style to swap the sd1 as boost on my pedalboard, now i have two boosts on my pedalboard...
Boosts are better than overdrives in my experience once you find an amp you love but that's me
From what I understand, Criss used the two SD-1 pedals into a cleanish Marshall, likely on the verge of breakup depending on how he picked. Then he'd get the bulk of his gain, apparently, from the SD1s.
I’m using my SD-1w as a boost into the OD-3. That works too.
Hello- I’m doing the exact same thing soon. OD3 as crunch/rhythm and SD-1 as lead/boost pedal- do you get a significant volume boost when switching the SD1 on, on top of the OD3?
Covering the Les Paul Head stock
Criss ran all his amps clean and used the 2 Boss OD pedals for his rhythm and lead. The rolled off for rhythm then kicked in the rolled up tone one for lead.
Holt did the same thing but into his gain channel of his amp
"Maybe Boss should kind of put out a pedal that's two SD1s in one."
Clearly it would have to be called the SD2 Mountain King.
All in favour, say I.
I.
I use mine with my MP1. It adds.....I dunno...something. Whatever it does it’s cool!
i love my SD-1 but i find the brighter tone it has versus my TS9 works better with extended range guitars or even just lower tuned guitars, especially with an extra volume boost afterwards since i find mine has a bit of a volume drop? i still need a bit more volume with it on just about everything but my EMG equipped guitars, whereas they all work fine without it thru my TS9. 7 string into an SD-1 boosting a marshall tho and i get a real nasty tone that just sounds evil lol
oh yeah, and as a standalone drive into a clean amp, the SD-1 has a lot more life to it imo. the brighter sound works really well, i only really use my TS9 as a boost since as a standalone drive it just sounds kinda dull
Thank you
I prefer it as a boost into a Marshall that is already crunchy, to go from rhythm to lead. Drive very low, level max, tone between 5 and 7
I just bought this pedal but at the moment it goes through a fender rumble 25watts for bass guitar as I play mainly bass, i just started to learn guitar and I would like to know which amp would you recommend me to play at home at have a great sound with this pedal as at the moment it doesnt sound really good, thank you all
I'm still waiting on the release of the Boss go's to eleven pedal.
That and the talent booster will be a wicked combo \M/

Great tone ...i can see from your face bro... great player too...
Why did he put tape over the Gibson logo?
Dino Riders? That takes me back.
Question: How high is your amps gain with the pedal on lead, thanks.
I'm sure you already explained it somewhere Leon but why are you hiding your Gibson logo? Haha :D Great looking les paul. And cool video.
Yeah a little in-joke related to the whole "play authentic" thing. It's a great guitar!
Love the SD1! Happy 40th! Do you ever use it in front of your Axe/FM3? A shootout would be cool between using the SD1 in the Drive block vs thru a real SD1 in front. 👍
Do you have a link for the BT? Downloading bandcamp and will follow 🙂
What pickups do you have in the Gibson
It just works.
I finally bought one right before the anniversary, and now it’s my favorite od. The 200 dollar pedals just don’t sound as good.
Yeah available through 2021 yet it’s almost August and nobody has one in stock WTF 🤬
