@@zacharybryant9881 if this channel ever gets me to a place where it's my job, I wanna start a music channel and there will be a lot of Spice Girls videos
This movie is so much fun! I could definitely rewatch it. I love the fact they start the movie off with too much which is one of my most favorite songs of all time! Thanks for covering this 😊 When you just want to sit back and not think too hard after a long day of adulting this movie hits the spot!❤
Yessss! You got the essence of the movie! It's supposed to be meta, camp and stupid! They never took themselves that seriously and Victoria's line are definitely the funniest!
Funny thing about Victoria. Her background was actually in musical theatre, and she auditioned for the Spice Girls singing "Mein Herr" from Cabaret, so that's probably why her comic timing is quite good. She's absolutely hysterical going "AND I'M VICTORIA, MALCOLM!" when talking to a comatose boy, and the idea to have her drive the tour bus on a high speed chase through London is genius. And of course we all love "what happened to the bomb on the bus?"
I went 5 times here in the UK! It opened on Boxing Day 1997 so I went to the first showing jn local cinema, it was jam packed full. The majority of the other showings I went to were just as full. Was pretty cool when fans in the audience screamed along with crowd in the final Spice Up Your Life performance. I saw them in concert for the first time just 4 months later. Living through Spice Mania was unlike anything I ever had experienced or experienced since.
@@kritpickproductions it was crazy. They were EVERYWHERE and on EVERYTHING. Even ASDA had official Spice Girls pizzas! What a time to be alive, gave me great childhood memories.
Brilliant review! You hit the nail on the head and it was interesting hearing your PoV about the movie age-wise and you can still appreciate the super meta value. I was 13 during Spicemania and they were everywhere - can't remember anything like it since. And the tabloids really were so cruel and cut throat to get their next story. I loved the film then - bright, fun, bonkers and over the top. I recently revisited it and was pleasantly surprised at how funny and enjoyable it was - it's the perfect time capsule of pop culture and nostalgia, even better now than it was back in the day.
@@VixOfAllTrades Thank you for watching and that thought-out comment, I'm glad you think I did the film some kind of justice. Just such an interesting piece!
I had it on vhs and watched it so many times I got sick of it. I agree, Victoria has the best acting out of the 5 and her lines are the ones I remember the most, like when she mocks Emma, when she talks to the passed out kid on the hospital and when she screams for help to say that her dress is dry cleaned only, she’s also not the weakest singer either, in my opinion Geri is.
About the movie: I own the DVD, and it's impressive that it offers two aspect ratios (widescreen and full-screen) for the viewer to choose from. This feature was ahead of its time. I wish more DVDs, Blu-rays, and even streaming services offered this kind of choice. There's even an extra performance included, which I believe is "Mama." About the Spice Girls: When I was seven, I couldn't speak English, but I was mesmerized by them. They were omnipresent-on every TV channel, magazine cover, and even at school, where everyone had their favorite Spice Girl. There were the lollipops, dolls, and stickers everywhere. In my experience, no group was as popular as they were, even with other big names like the Backstreet Boys, All Saints, and later One Direction. None came close to the Spice Girls' level of fame. And I think we can all agree that thanks to the Y2K revival, the Spice Girls are still present in the media. They are remembered fondly for nostalgia, and new people continue to discover them.
This video made me so happy. I really value your appreciation for how campy it is. I always figured anyone not around during the height of the spice girls couldn’t possibly watch this movie and think of it as anything but a random ass disaster, but it’s a camp classic! I saw it in theaters when I was about 11 years old and just rewatched it a few months ago. It’s a gem!
This video got me by the heart. SpiceWorld is a fun gem. The criticism behind the comedy is just brilliant and all the points that they approach on the story we can still notice on nowdays artists.
I was 10 years old in 1996, and the way that they were the cultural zeitgeist. As big as you think they were, they were bigger. This group of girls took over the entire world with charisma and personality in less than 3 years, in the time of dial up internet.
TBH the film wasn't that unexpected, it was entirely logical. They were in essence to 90's, what The Beatles were to the 60's. The Beatles at their height also released a number of films, with their albums serving as the soundtrack. In essence Spice World was a vehicle for the music and the band and worked perfectly as a marketing exercise. They also had their finger in every single pie possible at that point you're talking crisps, sweets, body spray, soft drinks etc, so a film was a no brainer and a licence to print even more money. The context really is important when viewing the film. That aside the film is a complete camp classic and works on a surprisingly meta level and as a perfect time piece capturing a moment in time that was fleeting.
When you talk about British girl bands I could only name one yes I remember spice album Spice Girls was my major influence growing up I'll tell you what I want what I really really want bring the Spice Girls Back
